Running seems to be the popular thing these days. While many find it good for physical exercise, I started pondering the spiritual “run” we do in the race of life. 1 Corinthinans 9:24-27 says: “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.”

When my sweet friend Misty Grenz started running, she said this, “In the short time I have been running, I have learned that when the burning starts and I think I can't go on, if I keep pushing on, it will stop. While I was out this morning, it occurred to me that it's the same in life. When [it feels like] you're walking through hell, the flames licking at your feet, and you think you are about to be consumed by the fire....do not stop!! Keep going! The burning will stop eventually and in the meantime you will grow stronger!” We all have those times in our lives in which we feel like we just can’t go on. The pain of the situation is too intense; we feel lonely or like no one cares; the task is just too hard to continue, etc. Homeschooling is not for the faint of heart. Some days are easy, while other days are intense. Moms and dads, “Run to get the prize!!” Think back to when you first started this journey and why. What was the prize you were straining toward? Maybe it’s not homeschooling that trips you. Maybe it’s just the weariness of life. The verse above mentions strict training for a physical race. We need training for our spiritual race as well. We need support for that spiritual race. Sometimes we need a bandage when we fall down (in the form of a hug or guidance). The point is, get back up and run your race. You can do this! When you feel like you can’t run anymore, take one more step. That step could very well be the step to victory. Vanessa Morris said, “Those flames (burning) are lies from the devil trying to stop you from claiming your prize.” Run hard, run with purpose, and run for the prize! ~Devotion by Jennifer Cogle

Academic Presentation Day

This is a wonderful opportunity for your children to share with others what they are learning at home!

This opportunity is well worth your time and effort!

Date: Friday, November 7, 2014 Location: Lexington Baptist Church, Reception Room Time: 9:00 am

This is the only APD for the 2014-2015 school year.

Let your children come and share with others the exciting things they have been learning in science or history. Any age can bring a display, but 3rd grade and up are encouraged to prepare a 3-5 minute oral presentation about a famous person, event, discovery, etc. in science or history. Use your imagination to create an interesting board, perform a skit, or illustrate an experiment. This is always a wonderful time for all and gives our children the opportunity to learn from others. All SHIELD members are invited to attend even if not presenting.

Box Tops

Box Tops Deadline is Tuesday, October 14, 2014 at 9 pm.

You can start dropping off Box Tops! You don’t have to wait for the deadline.

Any Box Tops dropped off after this deadline will not be included.

Please Note: Due to prior commitments, Janey may not be home for much of the day on Tuesday, October 14. Unfortunately, because of prior mail theft in the neighborhood, she cannot take responsibility for any Box Tops left unattended. Please take this into consideration as you are planning your drop off day/time. Box Tops Counters Needed: If you want to serve SHIELD by counting Box Tops and you have not received the email from Janey Goude about the informational meeting October 16 or 17, please contact her ASAP at [email protected] or 951-0943 (home) or 312-4095 (cell). Important Message about Guidelines: We have provided very specific guidelines for preparing Box Tops. These guidelines have been put in place to safeguard the many Box Tops that we have to prepare for reimbursement. Any Box Tops not prepared according to instructions will not be included. You will be informed if Box Tops don't meet criteria and given the opportunity to prepare according to guidelines and return before deadline.

If you have any questions, contact April Roebuck at [email protected] or

Janey Goude at [email protected]

SHIELD Encourager Page 8

Box Tops PLEASE READ CAREFULLY!! Because we have so many Box Tops submitted and changing hands with counters, we now have to be strict about people following guidelines in order to keep all of your Box Tops safe. Your Box Tops will NOT be included in the final submission if they are not prepared according to the guidelines below. If time permits, you will be given the opportunity to take your Box Tops back, fix them according to guidelines, and return them before the deadline of October 14, 2014 at 9pm. Guidelines for Preparing Box Tops: 1) Cut off as much excess as possible and peel backs off so Box Top is the thickness of a piece of copy paper. Excess paper (around Box Top or on backing) will result in additional shipping being charged. 2) Put 50 Box Tops in each ziploc baggie (NO staples, NO paper lips, NO fold over baggies). 3) You may have a baggie with less than 50 Box Tops, but none with more than 50. 4) Write "#50" (or however many are in the bag), your name, and phone number on EACH baggie. 5) You may put your Bonus Box Tops in separate baggies. (It's also fine if they are mixed in with regular Box Tops, just no more than a total of 50 per baggie.) If you do separate them, follow steps 1-3, but also write "Bonus" on those envelopes. 6) Put all baggies of 50 into 1 larger (quart or gallon size) ziploc baggie - NOT an envelope, and NOT a fold over baggie. Do NOT use staples or paper clips. 7) Write "#xxx" (the grand total of Box Tops that are in all the individual baggies), your name, and phone number on the larger baggie. 8) Put that larger ziploc baggie in an envelope to mail. You may hand deliver the larger ziploc baggie by itself or in an envelope. You may drop them off at either April or Janey’s house. If you have any

questions, please contact:

April Roebuck at 206-0092 329 Cedar Vale Drive, Lexington 29073 [email protected]

YEARBOOK NEWS Family Session Offer: The photographer we used for picture days has a special offer for SHIELD Families. If you want a family session, Leigh Essig will offer a 20% discount on all full (hour and a half on location) family sessions booked through May at her current prices. Her current price is $225 so the fee will be $180 and it will include 20 of their top images. She is a great photographer and many members have already taken advantage of this deal. You can contact her by email at [email protected]. Send us your pictures! Please submit your photos by emailing them to [email protected], 1 photo per email. Please include a description including names of those SHIELD members in the picture. Please keep in mind the size and quality of the photo. Be sure the photos you submit are full-sized images and not thumbnail previews, or “sized for web” images, as these are unusable in the yearbook. They come out pixel and are often too small to use. Photos taken with digital cameras purchased in the last 7-8 years are almost always fine. Photos taken with cell phones vary widely… if you are unsure, you are welcome to send a test image our way and we will tell you if its large enough. Please note that in your email. Purchase your 2015 SHIELD Yearbook for $25. Send a check payable to SHIELD to Leslie Buzzell 269 Vista Springs Rd., Lexington, SC 29072. After the Mid-Year meeting the price goes up to $30, so order now. Winter Formal will be January 30, 2015 and is open to all 9th-12th grade homeschoolers and their guests. It will be held again this year at the Lexington Town Municipal Building. The cost is $25 before January 16. Any registrations received after January 16 will be charged a $10 late fee through Jan 27 when registration is closed. We really need help to plan this year’s formal. If you are interested in helping plan or chaperone, please contact me now as we plan on putting together a group of SHIELD parents to throw this event.

If you have any questions about yearbook/formal please contact Josie Seacrist [email protected] (803) 957-8707
