Have You Had Yours Lately

Everyone knows what a fire drill is, from attending

school, to office buildings, to having ones at

home. Order is needed to making sure everyone

is safely out of the building.

We need to have fire drills when it comes to God’s

Word! Order is needed to make sure we know

what we are reading so that we can keep out of

the sinful condition that plagues the world. Having

a spiritual fire drill is just as important, to keep us

from the fiery depths of Hell.

Keeping alert and ready for the coming day of the

Lord, may we take a daily Fire Drill.

The Cracked Acorn

C.S. Lewis 03.12.2017

c.r. van arsdall

Nathanael replied, "Sir, You are the Son of God-the King of Israel!" (John 1:49)

C.S. Lewis's seven-volume NARNIA chronicles, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, have been brought to the screen. Disney has embellished it with special effects and given voices to the animals. These books have been in private schools for years. Like Harry Potter, the Chronicles have been applauded for their ability to encourage young children to read more. At this time the NARNIA movie has bumped off a remake of KING KONG and is at the top of the movie goers list.

I have not seen the movie at this time. In many magazines and newspapers, it has spawned a look into the life of C.S. Lewis. I have attended several Sunday school classes where his name was mentioned. To many scholars C.S. Lewis is more popular than Jesus Christ. I have tried to discover the why of the attraction to pull many fine minds to the books and literature that have arisen around the life of an atheist who eventually joined the Anglican church. He came to believe in God but not the Son. In less than 200 words, we can get a glimpse from some facts and snippets from the writings of C.S. Lewis.

Lewis was born in Belfast November 29, 1898 and died on the day JFK was assassinated, November 22,1963.He was in WWI as an officer and wounded. His mother brought him up as a Christian and she died when he was ten years old. In a boys school, Lewis drifted into atheism and began to write stories of myth and fantasy. He lived 32 years with the mother of his WWI friend who was killed. He never expressed his fondness for women or for

children. His favorite pastimes were smoking, & drinking in pubs with his intellectual men friends. This may have given birth to some of his writings. He had a chair at Ox-ford University, teaching language & medieval literature. The NARNIA books were written over a five-year period. In 1951, he married. Joy, his wife, became ill with cancer and died in 1959, leaving her son- adopted by Lewis. C.S. Lewis has been labeled a great thinker of our time and a philosopher that influenced multiple groups of readers today. Some go so far as to note that Lewis was truly the greatest Christian author of all time. (U.S.NEWS magazine Dec.12, 2005).

Here are some quotations from his books and writings:

The strongest spell to be found is the evil enchantment of worldliness. Religion is what we do in our solitude. The world is starved for meditation and true friendship. We have failed to practice the behavior we expect to see from other people. Badness is spoiled goodness. Love is more stern than mere kindness. Pain is the flag of truth for the rebel soul. We are born helpless and then we discover loneliness. Joy is the serious business of Heaven. The road to the promised land runs past Sinai. Religious bad men are the worst. History is a story written by the finger of God. Heaven will solve our problems. When we find good taste, it is lost. The less the Bible is read the more it is translated. We cannot evade the presence of God. Psalms express how God made David dance. It is hard for an Athe-ist to avoid the dangers that wait for him.

Our message next door begins with a statement which is commonly held by many in the world today. Unfortunately, it is equally held by far to many Christians today as well.

One might wonder why the premise of our neighborly message is flawed. This is the topic of our sermon today. Suffice to say many in this world both in and out of the church hold differing attitudes concerning “good people”.

Perhaps the most troubling is how a person is classed in the “good people” category. Often it may have to do with the clothes one wears, or the manners one displays. Other times it is based on our emotions or a good deed done.

What ever the reason the people we clump into the “good people” category have one thing in common. That thing is somebody likes them, for whatever reason, and feels they do not deserve to reside in the “bad people” group.

When we consult the word of God we quickly find Romans 3:10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: The crux of this passage is, save for Jesus Christ, none have lived a perfect life in the sight of God.

Perhaps we would do better to keep such thoughts under wraps and let the Lord pronounce the goodness of all we know.

Acts 17:26-28 (27)

We live in a time with millions of good

people. They are all around us everyday.

We see them and know many of them.

We want only the best for these good

people we know.
