Celebrating the
Differences Some one has said, “I never knew how strong I was until I had to forgive someone who wasn’t sorry, and accept an apology I never received. “
Sadly many millions of marriages seem to be stuck in just this kind of situation. Time and again one or both, “partners from the start” seem to fall into the trap that marriage is a contest.
Marriage is not democratic, not majority rules and certainly not the
strongest survives.
As much of the world seems to lean toward every human is alike God has not so created us that way. We each have differences and these differences can be come a hindrance or an advantages.
Statistics indicate approximately 60% of divorces filed are due to “irreconcilable differences” The reason for this phenomenon may be as numerous as the number of couples who have given up on the marriage which filled them with such joy just a short time ago.
But the truth be known the very
reason two people were attracted to each other is now to blame for the separation and or divorce.
God created us with these differences to compliment each other. To contribute what the other lacks and accept what each has to give.
When celebration replaces criticism the marriage together can and will thrive in a world that propagates sameness and takes the easy way out.

Lewis September 10, 2017
c.r. van arsdall
C.S. Lewis' seven-volume NARNIA chronicles, The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe, have been brought to the screen. Disney has embellished it with special effects & given voices to the animals. These books have been in private schools for years. Like Harry Potter, the Chronicles have been applauded for their ability to encourage young children to read more. The NARNIA movie bumped off a remake of KING KONG & was at the top of the movie goers list.
In many magazines & newspapers, it has spawned a look into the life of C.S. Lewis. I have attended several Sunday school classes where his name was mentioned. To many scholars C.S. Lewis is extremely popular. I have tried to discover the why of the attraction to pull many fine minds to the books & literature that have arisen around the life of an atheist who eventually joined the Anglican church. He came to believe in God but not the Son. In less than 200 words, we can get a glimpse from some facts & snippets from the writings of C.S. Lewis.
Lewis was born in Belfast November 29, 1898 & died on the day JFK was assassinated, November 22,1963.He was in WWI as an officer & was wounded. His mother brought him up as a Christian & she died when he was ten years old. In a boys school, Lewis drifted into atheism & began to write stories of myth & fantasy. He lived 32 years with the mother of his WWI friend who was killed. He never expressed his fondness for women or for children. His favorite pastimes were smoking, & drinking in pubs with his intellectual men friends. This may have given birth to some of his writings. He had a chair at Oxford University, teaching language & medieval literature. The NARNIA
books were written over a five-year period. In 1951, he married. Joy, his wife, became ill with cancer & died in 1959, leaving her son- adopted by Lewis. C.S. Lewis has been labeled a great thinker of our time & a philosopher that influenced multiple groups of readers today. Some go so far as to note Lewis was truly the greatest Christian author of all time. (U.S.NEWS magazine Dec.12,2005).
I put my printer to work-the result, 25 pages of quotations from some of his books & writings & here are a few:
The strongest spell to be found is the evil en-chantment of worldliness. Religion is what we do in our solitude. The world is starved for meditation & true friend-
ship. We have failed to practice the be-havior we expect to see from other people. Badness is spoiled goodness. Love is more stern than mere kind-ness. Pain is the flag of truth for the rebel soul.
We are born helpless & then we discover loneli-ness. Joy is the serious business of Heaven. The road to the promised land runs past Sinai. Religious bad men are the worst. History is a story written by the finger of God. Heaven will solve our problems. When we find good taste, it is lost. The less the Bible is read the more it is translat-ed. We cannot evade the presence of God. Psalms express how God made David dance. It is hard for an Atheist to avoid the dangers that wait for him.
Nathanael replied, "Sir, You are the Son of God-the King of Israel!"

David Sargent told the story of Josh Ripley. The Applejack Invitational Cross Country Meet in Lakeville,
Minnesota, was underway when Andover High School runner Josh Ripley heard something unusual.
He was in the first mile of the 2-mile junior varsity race held on September 16, but he stopped to see
what was wrong.
“I had heard this scream, and as I rounded a corner, he came into view,” Josh said. What he saw was a
competitor from Lakeville South, Mark Paulauskas, who had been injured.
“He was against a fence holding his ankle, and it was bleeding pretty badly,” said Josh.
Josh picked him up and started running with him in his arms. “He just picked me up and started car-
rying me and trying to calm me down. He said, ‘It’s going to be OK. I’m going to get you to your coach-
es,” Mark said, estimating that he was carried about a quarter of a mile.
The two runners finally reached a point in the course where they came into the view of their coaches.
There was the 6-foot-5, 185-pound Josh, from Andover High, carrying the 5-foot-5, 100-pound Mark, a
freshman at Lakeville South High, in his arms.
Josh handed off the injured Mark to his coach. Mark was taken to a hospital emergency room, where
doctors determined he had been accidentally spiked by another runner’s shoe. It took twenty stiches to
close the gash.
Having made sure Mark was in the care of his coaches, Josh resumed the race. He was dead last when
he returned to the course, but he passed 50 other runners to finish 211th out of 261 runners.
However, he was greeted like a winner at the finish line. Mark’s coach and teammates met him to thank
him.
“I’m just incredibly grateful for what he did,” said Mark.
Jesus taught by His example and message that we should live outside of ourselves and serve others
(Mark 10:45). Paul wrote, “
Let each of you lookout not only for his own interest, but also for the interest of others. Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondser-vant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He hum-bled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even death of the cross” (Philippians 2:4-8)
