A couple with learning dis-abilities were attacked by a gang of teenagers in Horsham on Tuesday, November 25.

Fire and rescue workers were called to a property on Crawley road, Roff ey, after a fi re broke out on a fi rst fl oor stairwell and landing.

The fi re was above Horsham Car Centre and around 10% of the fi rst fl oor was damaged by fi re, heat and smoke.

Fire and resuce attend the scene shortly after 6pm.

Jamie Stanley, a local resident who lives in the aff ected prop-erty told The District Post: “I was out for just over 2 hours. I came home and opened the door

to a stairwell full of smoke and fi re raging up top. Apparently if I’d been ten minutes later the landing window, already crack-ing from the heat, would have smashed and the whole building could’ve gone up.

“If anyone had been in the fl ats they could’ve died. The fi re brigade and police were all excel-lent. If this was deliberate, as it appears, I can only hope that the cowards responsible are caught.”

West Sussex Fire and Rescue are treating the cause as a delib-erate ignition.

There was great excitement mixed with tinges of sadness this week at Horsham Trinity Cricket Club as their building that has stood for over 90 years was demolished.

Work started on the demolition on Tuesday, November 25, after many years of hard work, the Club is build-ing a new facility at their Victory Road Ground that will be far better suited to their needs and is sure to look a lot more attractive too.

The Club’s popularity has grown year on year resulting in the Club-room often creaking at the seams with people. The footprint of the new building is sub-stantially larger and will off er the Community far greater opportunities.

Club Captain Andy Petch told The Distirct Post: “We as a com-mittee are delighted to be able to deliver what our membership so badly needed. It has been fi ne and I might add highly enjoyable for us longer serving members to have propped up the bar over many dec-ades, and I am not alone in having fond memories of various activities in the Club house, but this is sig-nifi cant positive progress.

“Our juniors deserve to have changing rooms larger than a Swan Vesta box and there will even be the possibility of getting a seat inside the building. The toilets might be slightly more hospitable too, al-though not to spiders who thrived in our previous latrines.

“We are also greatly enthused at the prospect of opening our Club to a wider range of activities and members, both playing or social. We have been working with the English Cricket Board on widening our junior Cricket programme and the new Clubhouse will enable us to do this far more successfully. But it’s not just about Cricket, our aim is to engage with the local communi-

ty, including schools and oth-er organisations and show

them what a fantastic inclusive club it is to be-long to. This Summer is going to truly going to be a great time to be a part of Horsham Trinity

Cricket Club, both on or off the fi eld.”The development has been

made possible through money from Sport England, the English Cricket Board, Horsham District Council and West Sussex County Council as well as donations from members.

Andy added: “Chairman, Rob Whittick has been instrumental in moving the project forward and working with Mitchell’s construction who have helped with the pitfalls and challenges we have encountered.”

The Club are off ering people the chance to be a permanent part of the New Clubhouse with a Buy a Brick Scheme, the details of which can be found on the club website www.horshamtrinitycc.co.uk or by calling Alistair Hempstead on 07810162898.

A man who lost control of his car and caused a crash that killed one of his passengers has been jailed.

Simon Graczyk crashed his Ford Fiesta head on into a Toyota Landcruiser on a sharp bend as he headed towards Southwater on the Worthing Road.

The 28-year-old, who was not insured, had just come off the A24 Hop Oast roundabout when his Fiesta went onto the wrong side of the road and collided with the Toyota at about 4.45pm on May 23, 2012.

Peter Green, 44, the front seat passenger of the Fiesta, died at the scene. A 27-year-old passen-ger in the back seat of the Fiesta suffered severe head injuries that he may never fully recover from.

The 44-year-old man in the Toyota suffered slight injuries.

Graczyk, of Eversfield, South-water, pleaded not guilty to caus-ing death by careless driving

while uninsured at Lewes Crown Court but was convicted after a trial.

On November 14, he was sen-tenced to 22 months in prison and was banned from driving for 18 months.

Sergeant Alan Spicer, from Sussex Police’s roads policing unit, said: “This collision oc-curred due to the reckless driving of Mr Graczyk.

“His actions resulted in the death of a loved father and the permanent injury of another. The sentence should serve as a warning that such behaviour is not acceptable on the road and can have devastating conse-quences.”

If you see someone driving dangerously report it on 999.

If you see antisocial driving, give the details of the driver and vehicle at www.operationcrack-down.co.uk so the incident can be investigated.

Pennthorpe School in Rudg-wick has an enviable reputation for success. Over the past two years the co-educational inde-pendent school has won over 40 scholarships to top independ-ent schools, including Wel-lington, Brighton College and Christ’s Hospital.

Now the school is announcing a new scholarship scheme for children entering Year 7 in Sep-tember 2015. These awards will be offered to pupils who dem-onstrate outstanding potential in the classroom or in the areas of sport, performing and creative arts. Candidates who demon-strate a number of strengths will be considered for an all-round award.

Headmaster Matthew King said: “We are seeing an increased

interest from parents at this age. We have a reputation as a spring-board to success and so pupils are now joining us from both the state and independent sectors to get that boost that we can pro-vide which ensures entrance suc-cess and scholarship awards to the top rated senior schools.”

“These scholarship awards can be for a significant allowing parents to choose a path into in-dependent education that they would not otherwise have con-sidered.”

Further details of the school can be found via the website at www.pennthorpe.com. Those wishing for an application pack should contact the admissions secretary Fiona Long on 01403 822391. Closing date for applica-tions is December, 31, 2014.

A comprehensive record of Christ’s Hospital (CH) pupils has been published.

The information stretches back over 350 years from the School’s foundation (1552) until its move to Horsham (1902) and incorporates over 46,500 names with the years of each pupil’s period of education at CH.

This fascinating new book – “Christ’s Hospital Pupils 1552-1902” – also gives a brief history of the School, and details about admission, including information on age of entry and from where the pupils were admitted.

It also provides the names of over 900 notable Old Blues (former pu-pils of the School), many of whom were prominent figures in a variety of different fields, including aca-demic, cultural, ecclesiastical, busi-ness, industry and public services.

The book, which covers about two-thirds of the total of around 65,000 children who have been educated at the School, is an impor-tant and readily accessible record of interest not only for Old Blues but also for genealogists and family historians more widely.

The BBC series ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’ discovered ancestors who were educated at the School of a fa-mous news presenter and a former England footballer.

Author Ken Mansell said: “Before the computer age, all admission

and discharge records were kept in bound registers, the details beau-tifully written in the fine hand of clerks who had generally been edu-cated at the School.

During my research, as I exam-ined the first register, which began in 1563 with the name of a girl (Anne Churche), I mused that the clerks would never have imagined that the efforts of their labours would see the light of day in a book in the 21st century.”

Ken Mansell was educated at Christ’s Hospital and at Imperial College where he studied mathe-matics and statistics. He spent most of his career in the UK Government Statistical Service. He works as a volunteer in the School museum.

In 2011, his well-received book – “Christ’s Hospital in the Victorian Era” – was published.

The present book was compiled from the information in the histor-ical registers held in their original form and on microfilm at the Lon-don Metropolitan Archives, with the main text drawing on a number of other publications and docu-ments written about CH.

It has been designed and pub-lished by Ashwater Press and is for sale (£16 plus £3.50 p&p through the School museum (The Counting House (Museum), Christ’s Hospital, Horsham, West Sussex, RH13 0YP, or [email protected]), Ashwater Press (ashwater-press.co.uk) or on Amazon.

Following a successful fireworks season, father and son team Rob and Stephen Byles at Aurora Fire-works are delighted with this year’s displays. They extend their thanks to everyone in the commu-nity for their support this year.

Between October 17, and Novem-ber 9, 2014, the Wisborough Green based company put on 58 displays to around 70,000 people, with around 2,500 attending each event.

Aurora use some particularly so-phisticated digital launching tech-nology to synchronize with its selected music.

Stephen Byles said: “We find out ex-actly what our cli-ents need, if they want music we put it together and choreograph the displays to the music, we can also provide a sound system for people.”

There’s a real sense of team spirit and com-mitment to producing quality shows.

Stephen said: “The music is just as important as the fireworks, and when we put on displays we have to work in a number of varying factors including smoke breaks allowing 10 to 15 seconds for smoke to clear. Taking on each different aspect and choreographing makes for a terrific display.”

Aurora have enjoyed one of the busiest winter periods ever and they still have displays planned for Christmas and New Year.

“From last weekend we’re put-ting on 25 displays up to new years day and we have 9 on new years alone.”

Aurora will be putting on the dis-play at the Forum Christmas event in Horsham on December 20, which will also feature live music, food and craft stalls and plenty of activities for children.

Stephen and Rob said: “ We want to say thank you to all our custom-ers for their loyal support. We look forward to seeing you all in the run

up to new years.”As with many busi-nesses, there’s a raft

of seemingly ever-evolving health and

safety regulations to comply with. These impacts on process of stag-ing shows, espe-

cially when the fireworks industry

finds itself within the same import cate-

gory as military and min-ing explosives.

But despite such challenges, there are plenty of exciting developments within the industry as it becomes increasingly technical. Long gone are the days when displays were hand-lit affairs and it’s now a case of Aurora using some particular-ly sophisticated digital launching technology to synchronize with its selected music.

Aurora Fireworks offer profes-sionalism and technical know-how and have 100 different lines avail-able this year.

The Horsham District Wellbeing team are run-ning a series of events to support the ‘Movember’ campaign, and change

the face of men’s health through providing knowledge to aid pre-vention and early detection for prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health issues.

It has been highlighted that men are at higher risk of developing dis-ease, by not openly discussing their health, reluctance in taking action because they don’t feel ill, engag-ing in higher risk activities which threaten their health, and due to the stigmas around certain health problems.

The statistics are alarming and should not be ignored. More men need to be aware and take control of their health, as men’s life expec-tancy is 4 years less than women, 1 in 4 will develop a mental health related illness each year, men have a 14% higher risk of develop-ing cancer than women and a 37% chance of dying from it, more than two thirds or 63% of men in the UK are obese, and deaths from poten-tially avoidable causes is account-able for approximately 24% of all

UK deaths. We along with the ‘Movember’

campaign want to get men to take control of their health by knowing their family history and any in-creased risk factors, being aware of their healthy body weight, staying active and aiming for recommend-ed exercise guidelines, developing strategies to manage stress, tak-ing action early, staying mentally healthy, not smoking and sticking to recommended healthy moder-ate drinking levels, getting enough good sleep, eating a healthy bal-anced diet, and being safe in the sun.

The team at Studio 2, Hor-sham let their imagina-tions run wild as part of the salons annual char-ity fundraising event and

raised over £2,200 for Cancer Research UK. Under the theme ‘Avant Garde’ each stylist together with a willing model had to devise and create a unique style to encom-pass an amazing hair and fashion combination. They then had to present their work explaining the inspiration and tech-niques used to create it.

The team were scored by both a professional judging team as well as a public vote from a capacity crowd. James Davies from Salon Success formed part of the professional judging panel and was ‘blown away the by effort, passion and hard work put in to each of the models looks’.

Each stylist was highly com-mended by the judges but it was Chris O’Sullivan who took both the judges and public vote with his

ocean inspired theme. Runner up was Della Hazard with an audacious entry that fused gothic and punk styles.

In addition to the hair show the audience were treated to top

fashion tips from fash-ionista Gaye Richard-

son and a talk on Feng Shui by Janine Lowe. The event was com-pered by Tim Fifield who also performed in a specially writ-ten comedy sketch

with two local actors. This event was the

culmination of a weeks’ worth of fundraising for

Cancer Research UK at the sa-lon in Coltsfoot Drive. The hair show was on Thursday, November 11 at the Barn in the Causeway, Hor-sham.

Salon owner Mandy Masters was delighted at the audience feedback and said: “This has, by far, been our best ever event. The reaction from the audience was incredible. I’m so proud of my team who put in such an amazing effort giving up their time for such a worthwhile cause.”

Christmas is just around the cor-ner, and as the Christmas lights go up, the shopping begins and the carolers head out, Horsham Churches Together are holding a huge Christmas Carol Service in The Forum, Horsham.

The event is taking place on Sat-urday, December 20, and it will be a

day full of fun and activitiese for the whole family, topped off with a fan-tastic fi reworks display from Aurora Fireworks.

A six-page booklet is being pro-duced which will include carol sheets, information and a com-petition to win a Christmas ham-per. There will also be a children’s

advent calendar competition,

children will have the chance to go round local businesses hidden be-hind the calendar doors, and every-one is a winner.

The event begins at 12.30pm with music from local choirs and bands and a mediaeval fair made up of food stalls and arts and craft stalls. Hepworth & Co brewers will also be in attendance with a stall.

From 4pm the carol service will begin followed by a huge fi reworks display from Aurora Fireworks.

Bryan Steele, moderator of Horsham Churches Together said: “It’s great that 32 local churches are part of Horsham Churches Together and have come together to put an event on that will be fun and will also keep Christ at the centre of Christmas by including the afternoons events with a carol service and fi reworks.

“There’s a programme of events all afternoon and a va-riety of stalls. There will also be plenty for the children to do, really off ering something for all the family.”

Canon Guy Bridgewater, Vicar of Horsham said: “There is some-thing extra special about celebrat-ing the Christmas message in the Forum and in the heart of our town. It makes sense to sing “Joy to the world” not behind locked doors in our churches, but all to-gether and in the midst of the bus-tle of our everyday life – for Jesus came so that everyone could know God’s love”

Chairman’s Trust Christmas Charity Ball in the Drill Hall, Horsham

Sunday 7th DecemberPontifi cal Sung Vespers at Arundel Cathedral (invitation to Chairman

and Mrs. J. O’Connell)

RSA, one of the largest UK insur-ers, has teamed up with Collyer’s College in Horsham to support a photography competition for lo-cal students to fi nd the image that best captures the spirit of the town.

The RSA judging panel had a dif-fi cult time narrowing down over 80 entries from students who submit-ted outstanding photographs which captured the vibrant character of Horsham.

After much deliberation, 18 year old Emma Chard, who caught the historic beauty of the old Horsham Townhall and Horsham Carfax, was chosen as the winner. Emma’s photograph will be printed and dis-played in the local RSA Horsham of-fi ce and she will also receive a Can-on EOS 1200D DSLR camera. The two runners up, Harry Jones and Leah Bendelow, also receive Canon

IXUX 265 compact digital cameras.Nicki Dines, Regional Manager,

RSA said: “It was really diffi cult for us to whittle down the win-ning photograph but Emma’s really stood out with its beautiful lighting. We want our Horsham trading site to refl ect our local environment and the winning photo really capture the essence of Horsham. We have been extremely impressed by both the volume and quality of entries, and we are delighted to showcase such great local talent. It’s fantas-tic that we have been able to work with Collyer’s and the local com-munity to produce these wonderful photographs which we are proud to display in our offi ce for all our cus-tomers to see.”

Laura Andrews, Photography Subject Leader, Collyer’s, said: “It has been wonderful to collaborate with RSA and I am so proud of all

our students who entered the com-petition. The photographs are a testament to their hard work and dedication”.

As the days get shorter and the dark evenings draw in we get ever nearer to the festive season.

It is also the time of year when we are called upon by charities to help the less fortunate in our community wherever we can.

Last year, my predecessor Cllr. Philip Circus established a Horsh-am based charity - The Chairman’s Trust.

This is the charity of the incum-bent Chairman and was established to help families within the Horsham district currently facing hardship. The charity aims to give a helping hand in the form of fi nancial as-sistance at very demanding times of the year for families in hardship.

Typically these times of year are during the Christmas holidays and the start of the school summer hol-idays. The contributions donated by the Chairman’s Trust have helped many families and ensured that children have had a much happier Christmas and enjoyed their sum-mer holidays.

This year my main fundrais-ing event is to be a Gala Ball at the Drill Hall, Denne Road, Horsham. The ball will be held on Saturday, December 6, and will be themed a “Winter Wonderland” from the book “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe”. This promises to be an enchanting and spectacular evening with bubbles & canapés on arrival, a three course meal with wine, lots of wonderful raffl e prizes and live mu-sic and dancing.

There are a few tables left and tickets can be purchased individu-ally or by table for eight people. This will be an ideal venue for corporate entertainment, an offi ce party or a great Christmas night out with a group of friends.

This is the fi rst time there has been a Chairman’s Ball in Horsham in over ten years and it is set to be truly magnifi cent.

Chairman’s Ball will support those less fortunate in our community

A Springboardto Success

Tommy Collins, a year eight student at Tan-bridge House School in Horsham, experienced his ultimate dream job

when he joined wildlife pho-tographer, Howard Kearley, at Warnham Nature Reserve on Friday, November 14, as part of the school’s Ambassadors Pro-gramme.

Tommy, who has wanted to become a wildlife photographer since he was very young, had a superb day capturing nature at Warnham Nature Reserve. Tom-my learnt how to photograph moving creatures, including rab-bits, bank voles, foxes and an ar-ray of unique insects, and also had the opportunity to quiz Howard about his career.

The Ambassadors Programme, which has run since 2008, is de-signed to give young students a real ‘try before you buy’ experi-ence with a one day placement at their dream employment, follow-ing research that indicated 80% of people in the UK regret their ca-reer choices.

Tommy commented: “It was fantastic to work with Howard for the day at Warnham Nature Re-

serve. He gave me great advice on how to capture moving animals on fi lm – especially in the wet weather. I had an amazing expe-rience and can’t wait to carry on photographing all of the fantastic West Sussex wildlife. This place-ment has defi nitely made me realise that I do want to become a professional wildlife photogra-pher and I’m really grateful for having this opportunity.”

Jules White, Head Teacher at

Tanbridge House School, added: “Howard has clearly had a truly wonderful experience at Warnham Nature Reserve. We created the Ambassadors Programme to help students make important decisions about future careers and it seems to have cemented his passion for becoming a professional wildlife photographer. We would like to thank Howard and PMW for their help in providing Tommy with such a worthwhile opportunity.”

Horsham Sports Club held their fi rst Networking Business Lunch at Cricketfi eld Road last Friday.

31 people attended the lively event, including organisers Sarah Beer and Mick Bushby, club com-mittee members and Sussex County Cricket Club offi cials, for whom Horsham’s Sussex professional Will Beer acted as an ambassador. Chris Wassell welcomed everyone, em-phasising that the club is eager to engage with the local community and encourage sponsorship, both for specifi c events, such as the county cricket and beer festivals or the fi re-works and music occasions, the wide range of sponsorship packages pro-viding extensive mutual benefi ts.

After a short presentation by Tony Feldon, Group Business Centre Man-ager at Lifestyle Ford outlining what his company can off er locally, Jean-Paul Esposito of Ford Credit Bank gave information about fi nance packages for vehicle purchase, leas-ing and other arrangements.

The subsequent informal lunch enabled attendees to network with business cards freely exchanging hands. Impressed with the wide range of diverse social activities at the club – in addition to cricket, hockey, tennis and squash, all with

coaching opportunities – those pre-sent expressed the desire for further networking get-togethers and the club relished the prospect of repeat-ing the event.

Mark Judges, Sales Manager at Sussex County Cricket Club said: “The catering and entertainment facilities at Horsham Sports Club are top notch. Horsham are fantastic people to deal with and we’re keen to make our festival a sustainable an-nual event, fully embracing the local business community.” Chris Was-sell told the District Post: “I’m ab-solutely delighted that our fi rst Net-working Business Lunch was so well and enthusiastically supported and it was great to receive such encour-aging feedback. The club occupies a prestigious location with function rooms available to hire for any occa-sion, from conferences to weddings and, apart from our major annual showpieces, our regular social events include jazz evenings and card and quiz nights. We have ample parking, Wi-fi , a fully licensed bar and a big screen showing all major matches - and, during the day there are Pilates sessions and the French circle, too. We’re in the heart of Horsham and are keen to work with local busi-nesses and the wider community for our joint enjoyment and our friendly offi ce staff will be pleased to assist with any enquiries.”

First networking business lunch a resounding success

A celebration and presentation of awards to local students who de-veloped the fi rst Take OFF em-ployability website was held on Wednesday, November 26, at the Capitol Theatre, Horsham.

The Take OFF initiative, led by Horsham District Council and Gat-wickDiamondJobs.com, in partner-ship with Crawley Borough Council, Mid Sussex District Council, and West Sussex County Council, has enabled students from The Forest School and the College of Richard Collyer in Horsham to be among the creative brains behind a new employability advice website called Take OFF ‘Our Future First’.

Take OFF is set to become a pow-erful tool to help school students and other young people to develop skills that employers are looking for in future candidates. This online resource will off er top tips on how to look for and apply for jobs, how to deliver the perfect interview, and understand what employers expect from young people joining their business.

The site is hosted within the ad-vice section of GatwickDiamond-Jobs.com and is available for all local schools, colleges and young people to access.

The Take OFF brand was created by the group of students, aged 14 to 19, who devised an airport based theme. They worked in partnership with a number of organisations in

the Gatwick Diamond who provided an insight into employability skills and routes into jobs in the area’s key growth sectors. Key resources include interviews with local hiring managers and business people with knowledge of the local economy.

Horsham District Council’s cabi-net member for the local economy, Councillor Roger Paterson, said: “Take OFF will help prepare the next generation for work and raise the standard of the local workforce. If young people have the skills em-ployers need, they are more likely to fi nd and retain rewarding careers. A skilled employable workforce is

essential for businesses to grow, so this initiative will benefi t the wider economy too.”

Georgina Angele, senior part-nerships manager at GatwickDia-mondJobs.com, manages the roll out of these employability micro-site projects. She said: “This project is a fantastic collaboration between schools, businesses and local au-thorities which will help prepare young people for work, and inspire them to fi nd the right path through education and into the world of work. We’re very grateful to all the local businesses and councils that have supported this project.”

Dan Barnes, one of the technicians at the The Capitol theatre, has got together as many of his favourite local performers as possible to put on a show to raise money for Can-cer Research UK.

The concert is taking place on Sunday, November 30, and will fea-ture a range of diverse talent from the local area and feature song and dance performances from well-known performers such as profes-sional actor Jack Lane, concert sing-er Sarah Esser, Tina Turner tribute artist Claude Hopkins, actress and singer Becky Hunt and “TeenStar” singing sensation Nathanael Land-skroner.

Groups such as Fi Steps Dance School, HAODS and Ariel Company Theatre are also joining in.

It’s a veritable “who’s who” of the performing arts in the Horsham district! A full house would see sev-eral thousand pounds raised for the charity.

Dan Barnes said: “I wanted to bring together as many of the amazing and lovely people I’ve worked with at The Capitol over the last eight years. Hopefully we’ve created an event that will be both hugely entertaining and raise a healthy amount for Cancer Re-search, a cause close to the heart of so many of us who are involved.”

Tickets can be purchased from The Capitol on 01403 750220 or on-line at www.thecapitolhorsham.com.

Celebrating 30 years of creating and perform-ing top quality chil-dren’s theatre, The Pied Piper Theatre Company

is back at the Hawth with its lat-est enchanting show. Robin’s Winter Adventure tells the story of a young boy’s courage as he faces the challenge of moving from his cosy village to the hustle and bustle of London. It’s a heart warming tale told with rhythm and rhyme, music and song, and captivating puppets.

The Pied Piper Theatre Company was formed in 1984 by actor and

artistic director, Tina Williams, and has continued to delight chil-dren, and their families, success-fully over the past 30 years. Be-lieving passionately that children should experience the very best of live theatre, the company takes plays, especially written for chil-dren, on tour every year through-out England performing in the West End, regional theatres and hundreds of schools as well as, in-ternationally, in Singapore.

Robin’s Winter Adventure is a collaboration between Tina Wil-liams, Artistic Director and Jo-seph Coelho (CBEEBIES’ Rhyme

Rocket) and is at the Hawth on Sunday, December 21 at 2pm, and on Monday, December 22 at 11am and 2pm. It is suitable for children aged 4 plus.

Tickets, priced at £7.50 or £26 for a family of four, are available from the Hawth Box Office on 01293 553636 and online at www.hawth.co.uk.

To download an illustrated story of Robin’s Winter Adventure to-gether with the Family Fun Pack, and to find direct links to online booking, visit The Pied Piper The-atre Company website at www.piedpipertheatre.co.uk.

A 17-year-old from Horsham is aiming to be become the UK and world’s youngest DJ and follow in the footsteps of the man who in-spired him, Dutch DJ Martin Gar-rix, known for his track Animals. Zach Broome (DJ redmonster) from Colgate featured in The Dis-trict Post in March this year for the success he had creating apps and it seems his talents do not end there.

Whilst he still loves creating apps, Zach is now focusing on his DJ career and recently released his track Madrid. Released four weeks ago, Madrid has a dubstep and house beat and has done really well on a website called ReverbNation.

Zach told The District Post: “Ma-drid was a mini overnight success as in its fi rst week it charted at num-ber six in the UK DJ’s charts, and then at number four the following week on ReverbNation. It’s gone surprisingly well and DJing/produc-ing is something I’ve always wanted to do, it’s a passion I’ve always had. I hope to mix the app developing and DJ work together and release an app to represent myself.

“I will be going to Madrid in Feb-ruary with some college friends who will shoot the second half of my video. The fi rst half will be shot up near Wimbledon where my friend who is the world’s strongest pro-fessional footballer currently play-ing for AFC Wimbledon in League 2, Adebayo Akinfenwa, will be featur-ing in the video as well as other few Dons players.”

Zach’s dad was a DJ in Manches-ter and also played in clubs in Ibiza, something Zach is aiming to do too. Zach is well on his was as he released another track on Monday, November 24.

“I want to release a few more tracks then hopefully play down in Brighton and Worthing before ap-proaching people in Ibiza. It’s tough but I’ve had a positive reaction to my age. My main inspiration, Mar-

tin Garrix, is only a year older than me and currently holds the title for the world’s youngest DJ, so I hope to beat that and become the youngest.

“I want to inspire other young people.”

The song Madrid as well as oth-ers from Zach will be on iTunes for free in 2015 and Zach is also going on tour with new band Red Sky Re-union next year. Each one of Zach’s tracks is and will be named after cities/places in the world - Madrid, Milan etc.

“One day I would love to call a track Horsham or Colgate -the vil-lage I am from.”

Colgate DJ has an ‘overnight success’

Following their perfor-mance this summer at The Capitol Theatre, The Almost Elvis Band return to Horsham for their an-

nual Christmas Spectacular at The Holbrook Club on Saturday, De-cember 6.

“It’s great to be fi nishing the year back in Horsham” says Andrew Gambling. “We played the same venue, on exactly the same day last year and the place was packed with

people kicking off their Christmas celebrations with us,and were back to do it again!”

The Christmas Spectacular will feature two distinct sets with songs from across the King’s career, but with a real Christmas Party vibe.

“The music is so universal and The Holbrook is the perfect venue for this kind of party for all ages”.

The eight piece band are re-nowned for their high-octane, table hopping performances. Last years

show was fi lmed by Horsham based media company A.P.Media and the band are releasing all the videos from last years on their You Tube Channel and Facebook Page (www.facebook.com/thealmostelvisband) to get you in the mood for what promises to be even more Spectac-ular event than last year.

Tickets cost £8.00, or £7.00 for members, and under 16s get in for £6.00. To book, contact the box of-fi ce on 01403 751150.

Another fantastic year of fun was had by all at Steyning Grammar School’s Winter Fair, which was held on Sat-urday, November 22.

This was the 24th year of the Winter Fair, which has become a well known social event in the local calendar.

Around 1,000 peo-ple attended this year’s event, which as well as being a real community event is also attract-ing many families from further afi eld. It was re-ally good to see so many people of all ages, despite the weather, having such a good time. The Winter Fair was once again a huge success raising a fantastic £7,800 for the school.

The main hall was busy all day, with Steyning Grammar School’s mu-sicians providing enter-tainment throughout the day, along with an assist dog demonstration on stage from Canine Part-ners.

The festive aroma of mulled wine and mince

pies fi lled the room. The ‘Santa’s Grotto’ run by year 12 students was re-ally popular, especially a photo with Santa. The Grand Draw and Auction were big fund raisers, and the classrooms were fi lled with quality stall hold-ers selling a huge array of goods including scarves, bags, clothes, toys, wood-en products, and fabulous Christmas gifts. Outside roast chestnuts added a

winter atmosphere and the bouncy castle enter-tained the children.

Once again the Stey-ning Grammar School Boarders ran a stall sell-ing non-alcoholic mulled punch alongside the Friends Mulled wine.

The Heritage Quilt Pro-ject was on display for all to see in the Learning Centre. This is a major piece of heritage work in the making to produce

Crawford Murray, Chair for The Friends of Steyn-ing Grammar School said: “On behalf of Friends of Steyning Grammar School I would like to say a huge thank you to eve-ryone that supported this event and helped to make it such a success-ful day. Thank you to those t h a t h e l p e d organise the event, the local businesses that have supported us and to all the teach-ers and students that gave up their weekend, and of course to the peo-ple that came along on the day. Raising so much money is just the icing on the cake, and every penny of this will be used to buy some extra equipment for the school, which will ul-

“Once again, our par-ents and carers behind the Friends of Steyning Grammar School have hosted a fantastic event. A great deal of work and commitment has gone into making this such a special day, both in terms

The origins of Billing-shurst are obscure.

There is some archaeo-logical evidence (fl int tools dating back 6,000 years) for early settle-ment or for people hunt-ing in the woodland that covered this area, but it is not until after the Ro-man conquest of 45AD that anything more than superfi cial evidence can be found.

The Romans built a series of roads in order to move troops and to control the surrounding land. Later they became major trade routes. Bill-ingshurst is built on ei-ther side of Stane Street, the London to Chichester road, both major Roman settlements.

However, the nearest

Roman settlements at this time were Alfoldean, to the north, and Hard-ham at Pulborough, to the south. The settlement would have been made up of small scattered farms owned by manors in the south of Sussex.

By 1100, a church was built on a spur of land, acting as a focus for the scattered farm commu-nications. It is at about this time that the parish of Billingshurst came into existence.

Owing to the economic pull of Horsham (a village 9 miles to the north that was made a Borough and a market place in the 13th Century) it was unlikely that Billingshurst would be anything other than a small village servicing the needs of the local farming community.

Its presence on Stane Street did give it one ad-vantage though as it was on a main communica-

Billifest 2014 will be held on Saturday 6th Decem-ber. Amongst the fun will be, Christmas Shop-ping plus genuine French Market, Morris Men and Lady Clog Dancers, Pock-et the Clown Punch and Judy, bouncy castle and carols with the Billing-shurst Choral Society.

At midday Father Christmas will arrive through a snow blizzard with lots of small gifts for children and a perfor-mance from the Pom Pom Dance Troupe. There is also the added attraction of the much-admired lo-cal musician Willie Austen who will perform a free concert from 1.30pm in the entertainment area.

tions and trade route. Farms established in the 13th century such as Daulkes, Hammonds, Marringdean, Newbridge, Oakhurst, Gilmans and Gingers would have used the village as a meeting point and religious centre.

In the 13th century there is documen-tary evidence for the existence of ‘Bell-ingeshurst’.

How the parish got its name is uncer-tain. Hurst means a woodland clearing but the identity of Bellinge is un-known.

By the late middle ages a number of foreigners speaking in a ‘Fren-chise’ accent would have wandered around the streets of Billingshurst.

These were the French glaziers who set up what is known as the Weal-den Glass industry, exploiting the wood-land for materials. The industry was short-lived dying out around 1620.

By the 18th century Billing-shurst had grown large enough to start being a centre of trade but in the 19th century Billingshurst was on the main London – south coast road because of Stane Street.

In 1796, the Wey navigation went as far as Newbridge and in 1816 the Wey and Arun canal was opened, which put Billingshurst on the only inland water route from London to the south coast.

In 1823, William Cobbett wrote in ‘Ru-ral Rides’, “Soon after quitting Billing-shurst I crossed the river Arun, which has a canal running along side it. At this there are large timber and coal yards and kilns for lime.

This appears to be a grand receiving and distributing place”. During his visit to Billingshurst he had said it was, “A very pretty village” where he had, “A very nice breakfast in a very neat parlour

of a very decent public house”.By 1859, Billingshurst was

on the main London-south coast rail route. These

lines of communica-tion were the reason for Billingshurst`s expansion and changing nature.

In 1837 a lo-cal resident would werite “A four horse coach from Worthing to London

came through the village and changed

horses at the King’s Arms everyday.

Vans went to and from Lon-don by road for groceries etc. Coal,

flint and all heavy goods came by barge on the canal to New Bridge”.

By late 20th century new housing es-tates sprang up and Billingshurst has become a minor industrial area in its own right.

Despite the rapid expansion of Bill-ingshurst and its changing nature, it still retains the feel of a large rural village.

Lately I have had reason to recon-sider a phrase which I may have overused; “Half of something is better than all of nothing.”

In matters fi nancial this appeared a smart approach to ensuring that I could keep moving forward without grinding to a halt over details. How-ever wisdom, like the judgement of Solomon, has a tendency to cut both ways and the results rarely leave anyone happy.

Take a moment to sit under the ever decaying Shelley Fountain and look at the intersection of Horsham retail and community too see every-thing appears stretched, tired, over used, under appreciated, somehow

forgotten.I watched as a teenager and a few

of his friends ripped the stuffi ng from a large orange toy dinosaur to leave the mess lying around pave-ment. I observed the scaff olding, the markings and the splintered ply-board. The ever redundant map stand; which at the time someone had taped a hand drawn A4 poster advertising some art event.

Was this really the image of an af-fl uent market town or the evidence that plans had slowly failed. Look-ing up West Street the view was no better; at least you are no longer blinded by stray bamboo shoot. Now you can see that it has become a street by which people cross or pass through.

In comparison Eat Street felt co-sier and somehow warmer. Indeed I think I spend more time in the Car-fax, Piries, and The Quadrant than towards the West. The abundance of

restaurants, cafes and places to eat may not sit will with many a pun-dit but they are clearly not lacking in custom and this is their season to shine as parties are booked and clouds drive crowds inside under cover.

When I consider the West end de-velopment, the new retail, the new road layout, It occurs to me that the Forum may see a greater use as peo-ple cut through by way of Sainsbury; because if experience teaches us anything about planning it is that people make their own routes no matter how many paths are built.

As ever the promises are held out that when all is completed every-thing will be better; well it worked for West Street didn’t it? The half of something delivered in savings has created a half done Horsham and it will all be for nothing if the “jam tomorrow” of planning is spread as thin as it has in the past.

The decay of West Street and planning promises

I’d like to share with you a ghostly incident I received from someone a few years ago now back in 2011.

The woman in question had con-tacted me to tell me that a few years previous to say she’d seen a puma one night but we soon moved on to the subject of ghosts.

This is her story:“It’s was years ago now, 1992,

but I remember it really clearly. I think if I’d been alone, I might have just thought that maybe I’d fallen asleep and dreamt it. It’s a little hard to explain because part of the weirdness of it all is because of what seemed to be happening internally rather than just external events.

Anyway, I was sitting on the bench at Kings Standing with a friend just chatting and smoking cigarettes - We’d driven up there because he wanted to show off this new classic car that he’d bought. It was probably about 10pm, maybe later, but it was August so not cold at all - we’d been there for about 3 hours just yapping about univer-sity. There’d been a lot of dog walk-ers and ramblers around earlier in the evening but they’d all cleared off and this guy’s car was the only one left in the car park. So we’re chatting away and suddenly there are three fi gures standing in a line in front of us, no more than two metres away; shoulder to shoulder with each other. I mean they were suddenly there right in front of us.

Neither of us saw them approach-ing although our view was clear around us although it was dark.

“My fi rst reaction was to give almost a relief-after-a-startle laugh because at the same time my thought was along the lines of “oh thank goodness they’re just dog walkers... phew” and I went to say “Hello” but I actually couldn’t speak and I thought “this is ridiculous, just say hello”, but I couldn’t speak and I couldn’t move, not even to turn to look at my friend. It was like my thoughts were in this battle with my body and I couldn’t understand why I couldn’t make my body work.

“This is going to sound odd, but it felt like fear was being pushed onto me, not coming from inside me, but being pushed into my mind almost like someone pushing a du-vet of fear over my head. So, these three fi gures- all the same height, the same outfi t- long coats with hoods, are standing in exactly the same pose, arms by their sides just facing us. No coughs, no shifts of

body weight, no shuffl e, no noise, nothing. I was looking at them be-cause I couldn’t even move my head to look anywhere else, I couldn’t even turn away and they were only two-metres away but I could not see any faces. It was a total dark void where their faces were. I felt like my mind was being burgled. I got this overwhelming feeling that if I spoke or moved I’d be killed- so I stopped trying. They stood there in front of us for about fi ve minutes, maybe longer. Then without so much as a murmur, they turned in absolute unison, like synchronised swimmers, total unison, took a step and they were suddenly not there. I don’t mean they walked off into the distance or dived into a bush (there wasn’t any gorse or heather in the immediate vicinity), I mean they suddenly weren’t there. It’s not that they did some mist-swirling ghostly type disappearing- they just were there, rock solid, and then they weren’t.”

“We sat exactly where we were, still not moving or talking for about ten minutes. Then my friend asked me if I could stand up and I said that I wasn’t sure. He said we should run to the car after he did a count down and we ran. Not relevant to this at all, but we got into his very nice Porsche and he’s shouting at me “Can you see them, can you see them?” and I’m shouting back “no, no start the car!” and it wouldn’t start. That’s like a low budget hor-ror fi lm. We’re stuck in a soft top car that won’t start and there’s some-thing horrible outside. He turned that engine over and over and it wouldn’t start. He was actually cry-ing when he said to me that I would have to get out of the car to push it. One of the bravest things I have ever done was get back out of that car and push it. I don’t know what those fi gures were but I am pretty sure that they weren’t humans- the vanishing act in part, but in a way, more so the feeling that came from these fi gures.”

Ashdown Forest hides ancient settlements and according to the Megalith website is, ‘is an earth-work planted with trees and is the site of a wooden tower used by Roy-alty when hunting. Also Iron Age and Romano-British remains were found when the site was excavated.’ It was also once claimed that black magician Aleister Crowley once performed rituals in this old forest. The woodland was also said to be the haunt of a spectral smuggler who was beheaded after a struggle with gamekeepers and so his headless form is said to wander the gloomy pathways. Sharing company with a headless horseman too.

Following last year’s bad weather, Lines & James Ltd are reminding ten-ants to be aware of who is responsible for what in the event of damage to a rented property with helpful advice obtained from ARLA - Association of Residential Letting Agents.

Storm damage, power cuts and flooding can be unpleasant and stress-ful experiences for those involved, but familiarising yourself with your ten-ancy agreement can help ensure any problems are sorted as quickly as prac-tically possible.

“Asking the right questions before you move into a rental property re-mains the best way to avoid future problems, but there are also a num-ber of steps that one can take to allay concerns over the potential impacts of weather damage. In addition, I would always advise tenants ensure they ful-ly understand the terms of the tenancy agreement and the responsibilities contained within it.”

ARLA has the following tips for those concerned about the effects of harsh winter weather on their rented home:Don’t weather the storm alone

Tenants should always have access to relevant contact details if there is a problem with a rented home. It is al-

ways advisable to contact your land-lord or letting agent as soon as possi-ble if weather-related damage occurs.

If the responsible party cannot attend immediately, taking time-stamped pictures of any damage is a sensible course of action to ensure the details of the incident are accurately recorded. What’s your responsibility?

In most cases landlords will be re-sponsible for the upkeep and mainte-nance of the building’s exterior of your building. However tenants should do everything they can to minimise dam-age, even if this is limited to report-ing a problem as soon as it happens. Remember, any damage may be the subject of an insurance claim for the landlord.

In certain agreements tenants can be required to perform limited upkeep tasks like clearing gutters, which could lead to drainage problems in heavy rainfall.Deep freeze

During the colder months, it is also a tenant’s responsibility to make sure the pipes don’t freeze if they are away from the property for extended peri-ods. The best way to combat this prob-lem is to set the heating to come on at a low level during the coldest parts

of the day, whilst also informing your landlord that you will be away from the property. If the lights go off...

If you are unfortunate enough to suffer a power cut as a tenant, check-ing the UK Power Networks website is a quick and easy way to get updates on the current situation. If the power cut is affecting more than just your home, it is worth getting in touch with your utility provider directly, rather than your landlord in the first instance.

If the power remains off for an ex-tended period of time, remember that freezers may leak as contents warm and any appliances that were on at the time of the cut will come back to life once power is restored.Get the best advice

If you would like clarification on any aspect of renting a home, Lines & James Ltd who is affiliated with the professional organisation ARLA would be happy to help.

All ARLA licensed agents must ad-here to a strict code of conduct, as well as offering client money protection and redress schemes, which protect all parties if things go wrong.

Visit www.linesandjames.com or call 01403 210088 for more informa-tion.

Horsham Hawks U12 61 – 55 Brighton Cougars U12

BasketballDave Smith – Sports Editor

A much anticipated fixture between last season’s league and cup winners provided plenty of drama and did not disappoint as the Hawks took on the Cougars in Brighton. The Sussex League Champions Hor-sham Hawks were looking to avenge their only defeat of last sea-son to the e v e n t u a l cup winning B r i g h t o n Cougars team.

A tight start to the contest saw Brighton take a nar-row lead during the early stages of the game before six quick unanswered Horsham points in the final minute of the first quarter helped the Hawks take a 14-12 lead. The second period was close once again with neither team able to pull away and at half

time the Hawks went into the break with a slender four point advantage, leading 24-20.

In the second half the Hawks began to find their form and take control of the game with some intense full court pres-sure and fast attacking bas-ketball that extended the ad-vantage to a more comfortable sixteen points in the latter

stages of the game. A final Brighton

surge resulted in ten quick

points scored in the last three min-utes of the game set-ting up a tense finish

but was not enough to stop

Horsham draw-ing first blood in

the battle of last sea-son’s trophy winners.

Scorers: Charlotte Willcox - 18, Josh Lea-Clayton - 13, Antonio Lozzi – 8, Finley Ben-nett – 6, Josh Tavolieri - 6, Harry Rose – 4, Amy Willcox – 4, Jamie Coulson – 2, Meghan Stevens, Isla Head, Jack Lun-niss.

Joshua Lea-Clayton of the Horsham Hawks and Sussex Thunder has been chosen for the U13 National Team Select

Squad that will be competing next summer in Gothenburg, Sweden. The annual event is Europe’s largest youth bas-ketball tournament and sees teams from across the globe compete.

After a successful summer representing Horsham and then South East England at the National Finals in Shef-field, Joshua was one of forty players from across England invited to attend trials for the team.

Joshua is delighted to have been awarded a place in the final squad of twelve and is looking forward to training with the team as they pre-pare for next year’s tourna-ment.

Table TennisDave Smith – Sports Editor

In the much anticipated clash of the Division 1 ti-tans Horsham A came out on top 6-3 against MMJ East Grinstead to ensure they took the top spot at the end of the first league phase. Harry Collins pro-vided brave resistance with a maximum that in-cluded a surprisingly easy toppling of Ian Ford in straight sets, but other-wise Horsham dominated.

MMJ 1 finished their first phase with a 9-0 flourish against Horsham C. Scott Covey, Joe Worskett and Freddy Goodall delivered the whitewash although four matches did need to go the full distance. Tom Da-nahay and Alex Widdowson ensured that MMJ 2 would retain their top tier status in Phase 2 with maximums in their 7-2 success over Horsham B.

In Division 2 MMJ 3 went top of the table, above Storrington, on wins dif-ference courtesy of their 6-3 victory over MMJ 4 which was the last match to finish in the hall as Tom Farr came out on top of a five-setter with Jacob Ev-ans and complete his per-sonal maximum for the evening.

Young MMJ 6 gave Stor-rington more trouble than expected. Whilst nobody could deal with the guile presented by Keith Ander-son, primary aged starlets Harry Yip and Chris Goodi-er set about making life for Storrington’s teenage con-tingent hard to grab two wins each for their team to produce a 5-4 result denied Storrington top of the table glory.

In the other match in the lower division Horsham E beat MMJ 5 6-3. Rob Pis-tone was on song with a maximum.

Seven Sports Acro gymnasts from Horsham Gymnastics Centre travelled to Sitting-bourne to compete in the South East Regional Finals

last Sunday, November 23.The South East Region covers the

Dominic Goddard and Amelia Ed-son put in a superb performance beating 14 other gymnasts to be-come the new Regional Champions at Grade 2 Mixed Pairs. This victory was made even more amazing as they have only been working to-

gether for the last 4 weeks. In another exceptional result Ella

Turtle, Grace Hanger and Darcy Luke, who were competing in a fi eld of 39 gymnasts, become the Grade 2 Wom-en’s Group Regional Champions.

Isabella Powell and Alexis O’Hara gained silver medal position in the Grade 2 Women’s Pairs against a high number of entrants.

Ali Harmer, Head Coach of Acro at Horsham Gymnastics Centre said “I am very proud of the seven gymnasts who competed today, all fi nishing on the winner’s po-dium. This refl ects their hard work and positive attitude shown during training. The other 21 gymnasts in our squad compete at their grades in the Regional Finals in Tunbridge Wells this Sunday, November 30, and hopefully they will be just as successful”.

Saturday November 22 – South League Premier Div. 2Barnes 2 - 3 Horsham Men’s First XI

HockeyMartin Read – Sports Reporter

The waterlogged pitch made skilful hockey impossible but Horsham, now just a point be-hind leaders Henley, came away with three precious points, leapfrogging Barnes into sec-ond place.

Horsham scored after 50 sec-onds when Jack Dean lifted the ball over the keeper’s head only for Barnes to respond with a soft goal after two minutes. But, Hor-sham promptly resumed the lead when Jack hit a long through ball from Matt Hough into the far side of the goal before Barnes netted on the rebound from a short corner, levelling the score to 2-2 at the break.

For the second week run-ning the umpires were being assessed at a Horsham game, leading to enhanced control de-cisions, and the saturated pitch further negated any possibility of free fl owing hockey. In nor-mal conditions Horsham would have been expected to take full advantage of the host’s leaky de-fence but with the ball continu-ally stopping they were pleased to get a deciding goal fi ve min-utes from the end when, after

Freddie Campbell had got the ball into the D, Cerdic Atkinson caned one into the top netting from a short corner, cementing point-less Barnes to the bottom of the table.

Team Manager Al Campbell told the District Post: “We didn’t adapt to the pitch too well but we’re happy to pouch three vital scrappy points” John Burroughs adding: “That pitch was a great leveller!”

Tomorrow (Saturday No-vember 28) Horsham return to Broadbridge Heath to play Eastbourne – ninth. Eastbourne have won just two of their eight matches, but drew a goal-less game with Marlow last week.

HockeyMartin Read – Sports Reporter

Horsham beat National League newcomers Bedford in the sea-son’s opener and were delight-ed to repeat the dose at home, ending a run of six consecutive defeats.

Determined to reverse their fortunes, Horsham’s hard mid week training session paid divi-dends when Suzy Clapp gave them the lead from a short cor-ner. In gothic gloom an imme-diate further Horsham attack was thwarted and a short corner was hit wide but right on half time Suzy netted from a penalty fl ick after another short corner had been saved. Then, half way through the second half Steph Dent scored in open play fol-lowing a good build up. Hor-sham’s 3-0 win is their biggest of the season, Steph telling the District Post: “That was much needed for us and next week’s game is big one, giving us the

opportunity to really improve our position.”

The clean sheet victory puts Horsham just one point behind seventh placed Wimbledon and provides a four point cushion over ninth in the table Ipswich, whom Horsham visit tomor-row (Saturday November 29) in their last league game before the Christmas and New Year break. Earlier in the season Horsham drew 1-1 with Ipswich at Broad-bridge Heath.

Division OneRingmer 3 - 5 Broadbridge Heath

The recent heavy rains have not been kind to a lot of local play-ing surfaces and Ringmer’s home ground is no diff erent. As a result this game produced an entertain-ing but error strewn game that ended up with eight goals and a number of talking points.

The home side, kicking down the slope, had the better of the early ex-changes and the fi rst incident came on 15 minutes when a long ball was played into the Heath penalty area towards McClean and Heath keeper Fisher came out to challenge. Both players made a determined eff ort to win the ball but the Ringmer play-er came off worse and after a long

stoppage for injury was forced to leave the pitch on a stretcher.

With fi ve minutes of the half re-maining Ringmer fi nally got the goal their football deserved when a long shot was saved by Fisher but the loose ball was turned in by Woodley.

However Heath equalised almost immediately when Sultan whipped in a low cross from the right and Legrange powered a diving header past Ringmer keeper Dan Goodchild.

Then with seconds of the half remaining things got even better for Heath when Piers McDermott’s long throw found its way to Merv Bhujun who turned and scored from a tight angle to give his side an un-likely half-time lead.

Heath, now playing with the slope in their favour, started the second half brightly and it was not long before they had increased their lead. Again it was Bhujun, this time turning in a McDermott corner at

the near post to give his side a two goal cushion.

The hosts almost pulled a goal back when Jordon Stubbings ham-mered a left foot volley from dis-tance against the post, but the same player made sure three minutes lat-er with a right foot shot past Fisher to give his team hope of a come-back.

That hope was dashed in the 87th minute when McDermott’s pass split the home defence allowing substitute Max Love to run through, round the keeper, and slot into an empty net for Heaths fourth. Bhu-jun made it 5-2 from the penalty spot in the 89th minute after Love had been brought down, and the hosts completed the scoring when the impressive Woodley coolly slot-ted past Fisher.

Heath Team: Fisher, Robinson, Alfi eri (Clark 70) Carruthers, Flack, McDermott, Waddingham, Legran-ge (Love 65) Bhujun, Moore, Sultan.

Saturday 22nd November 22 - FA Vase Second RoundHorsham YMCA 1 – 2 Erith & Belvedere

FootballTom Norris

Horsham YMCA’s eight game unbeaten run came to an end on Saturday, as a second half turnaround from visitors Erith & Belvedere knocked Peter Buck-land’s side out of the FA Vase.

Anthony Hibbert’s twelfth minute strike put the hosts ahead at the break, but the Welling-based Deres fought back follow-ing the restart and after Adam Marsh’s free kick levelled the scores with a quarter of the game to play, they netted the winner through Joe Minter six minutes from time.

YM boss Buckland comment-ed: “We nearly hung on in there. They were the better side than us, there’s no two ways about it. They

are a very good side, but having got in front, and hanging on in there, I was disappointed with the second half display.

“But you won’t play many teams who are that good. They are eight points clear of their own Step 5 league and when I saw it come out of the hat I thought that we’d drawn probably one of the hardest teams left in the Vase. They will go a long way I reckon.

“We didn’t believe enough in ourselves in the second half. To concede a goal like we did from a free kick was so frustrating. You’ve got to trust your goalkeeper to get the high stuff, and if someone can curl one over the top of the wall into the top bins then they de-serve a goal. But a daisy cutter

straight through the middle of the wall is very, very disappoint-ing.

“Next Saturday is more im-portant than today. Three points

down at Littlehampton Town in the league is vital.

We’ll also see who we get in the Sussex

Senior Cup, be-cause we seem to like that compe-tition, but if we can stay in touch in the league until Christmas,

we’ll really go for it in the New Year.”Goal Scorers: YM

Steyning Town U11 6 - 5 Ches-worth Rovers U11

A stunning Steyning ended Chesworth’s unbeaten run in spectacular style on a soggy pitch. Chesworth were down 2 - 0 at half time but Regan pulled one back for the Rovers in the sec-ond half before Steyning scored 2 more to make it 4 – 1. A super goal from Nyle made it 4 - 2 and Fletch pulled the game back to 4 - 3 with a low drive past the keeper. Steyning hit 2 more to make it 6 - 3. Chesworth rallied and Fletch

collected Callum’s pass to score his second and Chesworths 4th, Fletch returned the favour for Callum to score on his birthday weekend. Final score 6 -5 Steyn-ing.

Game 2 was an away win 2 - 5 with Finlay bagging a hat-trick and Nyle scoring twice.Junior Table Tennis

Leechpool recorded their first win in the Horsham Primary Schools Table Tennis League against a depleted Greenway team. Jolesfield’s return to full strength coincided with the week that they were pitched against leaders Southwater. The leaders proceed-

ed to impose their quality on the strugglers with 8-0 resulting.

Holbrook continues to chase Southwater despite facing up to an improving Billingshurst team. In the first matches Louis Mass-ingham took a set off unbeaten Harry Filson and Chris Goodier beat Leo Anderson but from there on in Holbrook took the six re-maining matches.

Heron Way gained a draw against Shelley School. All Shel-ley players won a match each, the highlight being Bell’s 11-9 in the fifth win over Nathan Hume.

In the fifth encounter of the night Warnham enjoyed a great night to promote themselves to third in the table. They beat King-slea 6-2 and again the ‘Two Har-rys’, Francis and Matthias assert-ed themselves with maximums.

HHC Motorsport’s Will Palmer kept his cool in treacherous con-ditions at Brands Hatch to win the BRDC F4 Winter Championship, securing the title in style with vic-tory in the final race.

The reality was that the Cham-pionship was Palmer’s to lose, he simply needing to finish eighth in the race to be guaranteed the crown.

It was far from simple for Palmer though who started from pole posi-tion for the final race, but had a slow start and then had to take avoiding action at Paddock Hill Bend when di Mauro and Fonseca touched, with Fonseca forced out of the race and the title battle.

Palmer fell to fourth, but was able to overtake Jordan Albert and di Mauro to move into second, and then claimed the lead when race

leader Connor Jupp spun out at Gra-ham Hill Bend on lap 13. The safety car was deployed and pitted at the end of lap 16. Palmer then marched into the distance, taking the win by 6.2 seconds from Jordan Albert, who capitalised on a last corner mistake from di Mauro, who finished third.

Palmer’s title success means he joins older brother Jolyon as a sin-gle seater champion this year, and secures free-of-charge entry to all rounds of the 2015 BRDC F4 Cham-pionship. Palmer commented: “It feels great to secure the Winter Championship. It’s been a very tricky weekend, especially at the start but the team have done really well to come back and help me se-cure the title. It’s been a fantastic battle and it feels like in half the races I’ve been going wheel-to-wheel with Gaetano and the racing has been very fair. We go into next year looking very strong.”

GP2 Champion Jolyon Palmer ended the season with his 12th po-dium finish of the year in the Abu Dhabi Feature Race, and in doing so, helped his DAMS team secure the Teams’ Championship. The 23-year-old claimed his eighth front row start of the season in qualifying, and converted that into second place in the race.

Palmer defended strongly at the start from Felipe Nasr and team-mate Stephane Richelmi, with Nasr squeezing through mid way around the opening lap. Before Jolyon could counter-attack, the Safety Car was deployed in response to an accident further down the field.

Racing resumed on lap four and on the following lap Palmer was able

to pass Nasr for second place, then taking the lead on lap seven when Stoffel Vandoorne pitted. Jolyon held the lead until lap 22 when he pitted for super-soft tyres. Palmer set fastest lap on the new rubber but was unable to close down the gap to Vandoorne and came home in second place, his 12th podium of the year.

Palmer commented: “It’s been an incredible year and I really couldn’t have asked for more. Thanks to DAMS as well because we’ve worked so well together and have really got the best out of both myself and the team to become an unstoppable force this year from the very first test. I’m proud to bow out of GP2 not only as champion but with the record amount of points as well. I am glad to have left my mark on the series and now look forward to the future.”

Saturday November 22 - Lon-don 3 South EastHorsham 47 – 0 Gillingham Anchorians

RugbyRichard Ordidge - HRUFC

Horsham recorded an impres-sive 47-0 win last weekend over Gillingham Anchorians to main-tain the pace at the head of Lon-don 3 South East. The Kent side have been something of a bogey side to Horsham having won four of their fi ve league and cup meetings since their return to the London leagues.

Horsham started well and were hammering away at the Gilling-ham defence with good link up play without registering a score. Finally on 10 minutes after the point of attack had been switched both ways, Richard Tredgett fed his brother Michael, who was supporting on his shoulder, and burst through the gap to run in from 25 yards, with the try con-verted by Bell. Minutes later Bell extended the lead with a penalty when Gillingham were penalised for off side.

It seemed only a matter of time until the scoreboard refl ected the quality of the Horsham play and territorial dominance. But Gill-ingham were defending resolutely and would not lie down playing off scraps of possession and always posing a threat on the breakaway.

The Green and Whites were un-able to turn their pressure into further points, and at half time Horsham were leading 10-0 which did not refl ect the balance of play.

The second half was a diff erent story as Horsham ran in a further fi ve tries. Thompson again stole line out ball, and after a power-ful drive from the forwards Rich-ard Tredgett crossed the line to score. Further tries were added

from Johnny Ordidge after good phase play, Thompson with an interception from inside his own half, Ben Pirt racing in from 25 yards having been put through by Kyle Fairs, and Matt Stone show-ing great athleticism to round the cover defence. To complete the scoring, Bell slotted a further three conversions and two penalties.

Horsham coach Nick Stocker said “We got into our patterns quickly and dominated the game in terms of territory and pos-session. Other than at kick off s in the fi rst half they only got into our half once when they missed a kick at goal. We have been creat-ing a lot of opportunities in re-cent weeks but we have tried to force it when we get close to the try line. At half time I said we needed to refocus and be more composed in the crucial phases especially when we get into the red zone. All in all it was a better performance in terms of attitude and approach. We looked a well

drilled cohesive unit, defended our try line well to shut them out, and throughout the game limited them to a few individual breaks. I was encouraged by the perfor-mance of our two young props. Kyle Fairs was back at tight head after injury and Liam Brady came on in the second half giving us

strength in depth and they will be an asset to the

club in future years”.“Arun Thompson

was my man of the match closely fol-lowed by Will Bell, Sean Tuhakaraina,

Richard and Michael Tredgett, and Tom

Johnson who controlled the game well from fl y

half.”Following a week off Horsham’s

next game is away to Beckenham based Old Dunstonians on Satur-day December 6 in the league.

Horsham Team: W Bell, Gibbs, Tuhakaraina, Ordidge, James Whiting; Johnson, Rush; Talbot (capt), Fisher (Stone 43), Fairs (Brady 65); N Bell, Jonny Whiting; M Tredgett (Pirt 59), Thompson, R Tredgett.

Saturday November 22 - Lon-don 3 South East Pulborough 22 - 8 Uckfi eld

Rugby Martin Read – Sports Reporter

The weather was miserable but Pulborough lifted the spir-its with their fi rst win against a higher team in the table this season. Although Borough re-main eighth they are now just one point behind both Uckfi eld and Heathfi eld.

In Saturday’s match Uckfi eld opened the scoring with a penalty but Borough soon equalised, cour-tesy of Frazer Oliphant-Hope’s

trusty boot. Then, after camp-ing out in front of the posts for ten minutes, they were rewarded with a Tom Hoey try, which Frazer converted before Will Scrase also got over the line, again boosted by Frazer’s kicking.

Despite diffi cult ball handling conditions Borough exerted sus-tained second half pressure ena-bling Fenn Caddick to drive over, this time the kick going astray. Uckfi eld’s frustration boiled over but Borough held fi rm until the dying moments when a consola-tion unconverted try was con-ceded with Borough tantalisingly close to earning a bonus point.

Head Coach Clayton Saunders told the District Post: “To beat

Uckfi eld 22-8 was very satisfy-ing – the last time we were in this league they did the double against us without us scoring a point!” New President Alex Steele added: “This was a crucial win – we’ve been threatening that for the last few games, just what we needed!”

Team Manager Roger Hunt was equally delighted, saying: “We controlled the game with a good, solid performance. The forwards played especially well.”

Borough return to action on December 6 with an away game against tenth placed Hastings & Bexhill. With just win from nine games they were trounced 56-8 by Dartfordians last week.

After an outstanding one day sea-son with the county former Hor-sham captain Will Beer has signed a new one year contract with Sus-sex, saying: “Sussex is the club I have played for since I was ten years old. I love playing for this club and everything it stands for.”

26 year old Will was a county squash player but now concentrates his sporting ambitions on cricket, adding: “Following such a good year in white ball (one day) cricket I’d like to seal my place in all three for-mats – 50 over, T20 and four day – and push towards winning matches and trophies for Sussex in 2015.”

Will played for England at U19 level, starring against New Zealand before doing the same for Sussex on T20 fi nals day. He now captains Sussex 2nd XI but, following in his father Andy’s footsteps – and fa-ther’s brother Robin - plays for Horsham whenever possible, where his leg spinners and telling batting are much sought after. At Hove Will was recently named Team Man of the Year in recognition of his self-less contributions throughout the

season and he acts as an ambas-sador for Sussex at events around the county. He also won the Agony to Ecstasy award for pulling off a remarkable victory with Yasir Ara-fat in a one day cup game against Durham, putting on an unbroken 97 run partnership with Sussex seven wickets down – a one day eighth wicket record for the county.

Will’s consistently noteworthy performances in televised match-es draw much praise from the Sky commentary team and although he has played well in four day cricket, especially at Lord’s against Mid-dlesex, his opportunities have been limited. But, Sussex Professional Cricket Manager Mark Robinson says: “As a valued one day player Will deserves his contract exten-sion. We are very aware of his am-bitions and are looking to develop him so that he can start to really make an impact in all formats in the future.”

In previous winters Will has played abroad and attended Darren Lehmann’s Cricket Academy in Ad-elaide but this time he will be stay-ing in Sussex, telling the District Post: “I started training for next season at the beginning of Novem-ber and I’m coaching at the Sussex Academy, working towards gaining the best professional qualifi cation to secure my future.”
