About 100 jobs will be created if a multi-million pound revamp of Swan Walk at Horsham is ap-proved.

And fi lm fans could be watching the action in a new cinema in three years under proposals designed to keep more shoppers in the town.

Other ideas put forward for a three-storey development at the western end include about four res-taurants and a large store.

The unveiling of the scheme brings a possible welcome boost to the town after the recent an-nouncement that about 80 jobs are at risk with the closure of the Beales department store in July.

The Swan Walk development would be around the area currently occupied by Wilkinsons and other

stores but has yet to be put before district councillors for approval. The intention is to start work in two years, subject to planning permission from Horsham District Council.

No potential occupiers of the new buildings have been named at this stage, which is a consultation pe-riod before a planning application is submitted. No costs have been

revealed yet.Shoppers were given a glimpse of

the proposed scheme in an empty shop in the centre when an exhibi-tion was staged last Friday and Saturday.

They would get direct access to

the new store on the upper ground fl oor from the mall, and there would be mezzanine levels for what are described as family friendly restaurants on the ground fl oor.

The proposed cinema would have about fi ve screens, similar to exist-ing ones at Crawley and proposed screens at Burgess Hill, where a redevelopment of the Martlets shopping centre was recently ap-proved. Offi ces would be converted to make space for the cinema on the second fl oor.

Gill Buchanan, Swan Walk centre manager, said about 100 jobs for local people would be created. Research had shown a need and demand for a new cinema. The new development would help claw back income from food and leisure that was currently being spent outside Horsham. Gill said: “We anticipate, subject to the approval of the plan-ning application, that construction will commence on site in April 2018 and that the new development of restaurants, retail and the cinema will open on October 2019.

“These are exciting times for both Swan Walk and the town cen-tre as a whole and we are delighted to be able to showcase our plans to our loyal and valued tenants and customers during the public consultation.”

Multiplex Cinema brings possible boost to town

A thief stole musical instruments in a burglary at Broadbridge Heath.

Police are investigating the theft at a bungalow in Old Wickhurst Lane in which they say several musical instruments were among items stolen by intruders.

The property was searched and thieves took a gold engagement ring, costume jewellery, a Spanish guitar and case, a violin, case and bow, a mandolin and case, a banjo, a fl at screen TV, bedding and two power drills and bits.

The break-in is thought to have happened between Monday March 7 and 13.

Anyone who saw anything suspi-cious or who may have other infor-mation about the burglary is asked to email [email protected] or phone 101, quoting serial 1057 of 13/03.

Youngsters like brave Alfi e Buck from Horsham would benefi t from a charity having more vol-unteers helping to raise money.

Alfi e has been helped by Horsh-am-based Action Medical Re-search, which is looking for more volunteers.

Apart from its other work the charity is also supporting research to help children with cerebral palsy, like Alfi e, a lively nine-year-old who loves jokes and playing tricks on people.

His mother Samantha said:“He’s a cheeky boy who always wants to have fun”. But, for Alfi e, having fun is a daily struggle.

Samantha said: “Alfi e suff ered devastating brain damage at birth. His muscles and his brain cannot ‘talk’ to each other so he is unable to control the way his body moves.”

With funding from Ac-tion, re-

searchers in London and South-ampton are are using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to study how damage to the brain relates to loss of movement and coordina-tion. The hope is that one day, doc-tors will be able to use these new brain scans to help them predict what sort of movement diffi culties children with cerebral palsy are likely to experience in the future, which could help parents feel more prepared and make it easier to plan children’s care.

Alfi e

Youngsters can still enjoy an Easter Egg hunt after the holiday weekend.

At the same time they will be helping youngsters a good deal less fortunate than themselves.

Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity is staging its “Charity Easter Egg Hunt and Wood-land Trail” next Thursday.

The day runs from 11.00am – 3.00pm and will take place at the charity’s base in Five Oaks at Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity, Ingfi eld Manor Drive, Five Oaks, Billingshurst, West Sussex.

The youngsters will be off ering a range of activi-ties including face painting, the opportunity to meet the Easter Bunny and some of his friends from the farm and a ride on the miniature train.

Refreshments will be available and there will be a chocolate treat for every child who completes the trail, while stocks last.

Tickets are available on the day, March 31, and are priced at £5 a child with adults free.

Charity supports under -5s with Cerebral Palsy and Other Motor Learning Diffi culties. It provides a specialist service for the children and their families, par-ents and children learn daily living skills together using the principles of Conductive Educa-tion.

All the ser-vices are free. The char-ity receives no central or local government funding and

relies entirely on the support of

the commu-nity to raise the £475,000 needed each year to run the service.

What do you think Horsham should be like in 2030? For some while we have been asking everyone what they value about Horsham and what they wish for the future.

We have received many com-ments from everyone who lives or works in Horsham, as well as from visitors. We have comments about what you like, what you hate and what could be better! They make fascinating reading and give a real sense of what makes Horsham such a great place to live.

One of the main themes to emerge is that Horsham is valued as a friendly market town. As we look ahead to 2030, it is important that we preserve and maintain this, whilst helping the town to develop and meet the challenges of the 21st Century. We also need to recognise that although many people in our town are older, the new hous-ing developments mean that the balance is changing as more young families move in to the town and neighbouring villages. It is impor-tant that we hear and recognise their views as well as of those of you who have lived here for many, many years.

In April, we will be bringing the results back to you at Imagine Horsham in Swan Walk. Over three days, we would like you to call in to see us, to see what everyone has

said and let us know if you agree with them. You can vote for the ideas you like via our phone voting system. More coff ee shops or less? Traffi c free zones around schools – yes or no?

We are also looking for some-thing more from you. We need to know what should go where. Where could we build homes and what should they look like? Where could we put a music venue, a church, a maker space or a homeless shelter? Which community buildings need saving? Which green spaces need protecting? How do we travel around the town? How do we keep active and where do we meet our friends?

This event is about you taking part and having your say. Design your road or a part of the town as you think it should be, and send it to us so everyone can choose which ideas they like best. We will have all the entries up on the walls and if you have used Minecraft we aim to put it on a screen so everyone can see it. The competition is open to all ages.

Maybe you want to have a rant – there will be a blackboard for that! Be fi lmed talking about what you would do to make Horsham more accessible, more age-friendly or more green!

There was more than just a title at stake when guitarist Luke Fuest won Steyning Grammar School ‘SGS Has Talent Show’ perform-ing what was described as a fantastic instrumental version of ‘Thunderstruck’.

As well as providing a spot-light to spotlight talent across the school, the show is an important occasion to raise valuable funds to support Malawi and the schooling of eight Malawian children.

The school has been rais-ing money to help one family in Lilongwe, Malawi for several years. Steria is a mother who has single-handedly raised seven young chil-

dren; her daughter, her nieces and nephews and one girl who she took in when she was abandoned.

There only way to escape the cy-cle of poverty in Malawi is through education, which costs a fortune.

Over the last ten years the money that has been raised has enabled all these children to remain in school almost continually.

Sarai, the eldest has completed university and has a good job work-ing for a Portuguese road company. Kumvana and Chisomo are also in the middle of their university courses. Patsy and Tupo have suc-cessfully passed the entrance exam

to secondary school and the three brothers, Philip, Joseph and Fabi-ano are all doing well in primary school.

The evening was hosted by Leo Ghorishi, a Year 10 student, who started the evening by introducing the opening song ‘Read my mind’ performed by Eva Payton-White and Maya Brasington.

Ben Waring’s performance of the Frank Sinatra classic ‘New York, New York’ earned him equal 3rd place in the show.

A big impression was made by Dewi Kassim, Kezzi Blackmore and Muni Lane with

their “mashup” performance of ‘Toxic’ and ‘Crazy in Love’, which took them to second

place.Katie Brownings, show or-

ganiser said: “We had a really varied programme this year with more dance performances than usual. It is always good to see boys dancing. This year we raised another incredible £867 for Ma-lawi. This money will help us to provide the much needed ongoing support to this family.

“As usual I had a fantastic team of Sixth Form helpers in Madi Feary, Gina Foice, Millie Cross, Charlotte Pegler, Lucy Moon and Yasmin Lichioui who ran the whole show, and big thanks go to this year’s staff judges Joe Blatch, Anna Morris and John Huffman.”

One of the most interesting items we have sold recently was a fragment of pennant fl ag be-lieved to have been carried by the army of Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth. This was featured on television, and in newspapers nationwide. Sold for £2800 as a speculative item, the feeling was strong overall that the story be-hind the fl ag is true. It was nice to handle a topical item such as this. (Coins of Richard III do very well also!)

Antiques event hits Horsham

Children love their “lollipop man” so much they have put to-gether a book about him.

The youngsters even used popu-lar John Gooderham’s favourite safety phrase “Cross Now Please” as the title.

Billingshurst Primary School pu-pil Abi Smith played a star part in writing the story and a competition was set up so that each class could be in with a chance to illustrate the book.

The winning picture from each class is used in the book, including the reception class who have illus-trated the front and back cover.

Head teacher Helen Williamson said: “The book is fabulous and the whole school enjoyed creating illustrations for it because they all love John.

“They especially like his daily chant, ‘Cross now, please’, which is the name of the book. Children are very good at impersonating him which reinforces the safety mes-sage. All the pictures for the book are beautiful and the children really enjoyed producing it.”

John returned the compliment. He said: “The children are won-derful and so polite and friendly. I really like the responsibility of

seeing them safely across the road and there are over 600 children at Billingshurst Primary School so a lot of children relying on me to see them safely across. I think that is the most satisfying aspect of being a lollipop man.”

The book is on sale at the school and is also available to buy by emailing the PTA at [email protected]. The book costs £3 plus £1 postage and packaging. All monies raised from the sale of the book go back to the school.

People living with diabetes in Horsham and Mid Sussex are be-ing off ered free NHS courses.

The Long Term Conditions Project through the Time to Talk Service at Sussex Community NHS

Trust (SC is holding a number of courses from April to support peo-ple living with type 2 diabetes.

The fi ve-week course is designed to support adults to learn strategies to live well with type 2 Diabetes. It will explore any barriers or dif-fi culties in living well with type 2 diabetes; suggest practical tools to improve quality of life; develop skills to make positive changes

including how to monitor type 2 diabetes and show people how to measure their progress.

Each session is 1.5 hours with a maximum of 15 members and with two facilitators.

Organisers say this course is a great opportunity to meet other people who live with type 2 diabe-tes and share ideas.

Courses will run in Horsham and Mid Sussex and are provided in a safe, comfortable and supportive environment.

Newly-weds Emma and James O’Malley found a touching way of remembering a beloved father.

The Rusper couple set up a bar in his name at their reception and raised nearly £2,000 for a cancer charity.

Nev’s bar was named in mem-ory of Emma’s late father, Nevill, and guests gave donations to St Catherine’s Hospice at Crawley in exchange for drinks. Nevill had been cared or at the hospice.

In the lead up to their big day, Emma and James bought all their own drink for the bar and arranged

for two friends to serve on the night. The bar was open for the evening reception and was a big

success, with guests digging deep to support St Catherine’s.

The generous gesture raised £1,745. 20. Emma said: “I’d always wanted to do it after a friend of mine did something similar at her wedding. I thought it was a lovely

idea. We had a barrel engraved and put up a picture explaining what we were doing to our guests.

“There were no formal drink prices so donations were just at our guests’ discretion. Dad died when I

was 19 but the bar was a lovely touch for our family and a great way for me to acknowledge and

bring him into my wedding even though he wasn’t around. I also carried a locket which had his

picture in on my bouquet.”Speaking about her day Emma

said: “We held the wedding at 12 o’clock but even though it was an early ceremony, the day fl ew by. We live next door to a village church and as James had proposed on Christmas day the previous year, we decided to have a winter wonderland themed wedding. We went away on honeymoon over Christmas and New Year to the Maldives and Sri Lanka which was amazing. We’re both really chuff ed

that we could raise money for such a worthy cause and would like to thank all our family and friends who donated to Nev’s Bar.”

The hospice says couple’s dona-tion will make a real diff erence to St Catherine’s and the patients they care for and is enough to fund an entire day of Day Hospice services, which help patients to live well for as long as possible through a range of wellbeing activities such as: art and music therapy, exercise groups and peer to peer support groups.

A new aerial art gallery has been created in Horsham’s streets to display a thought-provoking new installation of works that exam-ines the relationship between colour and personality.

For the fi rst time, Horsham Piazza Italia has included the art of Italy as part of the festival, which celebrates its tenth anniversary this year.

Dadaprojects has partnered with Horsham Museum and Art Gallery to bring Supercelestial by Joseph Rossi to the town until April 13. The exhibition takes the form of an outdoor installation along East Street, with original art pieces available for viewing at the gallery. From March 25-29 there will be diff erent opportunities for the public to meet Dadaprojects and Joseph Rossi during the Piazza Italia Festival.

Dadaprojects, a not-for-profi t organisation, encourages the work of artists outside the conventional confi nes of the art scene. It aims to facilitate the interaction between

the public and art and promote cul-tural and artistic exchange interna-tionally, delivering high quality and

memorable experiences. Jeremy Knight the curator at

Horsham Museum and Art Gallery said: “We are delighted to be a part of this project and excited to be bringing contemporary Italian art to Horsham for the fi rst time. We hope the public will join us in en-gaging with these beautiful works by Joseph Rossi throughout the streets and gallery in the town.”

On Friday, Key Stage 3 students came together to take part in a sponsored Fancy Dress Fun Run in aid of Sports Relief.

The mile long run, organised by the PE curriculum area, has proved a successful initiative amongst the girls, with a colourful array of one-sies and other outfi ts, ranging from a banana to horseback rider, being seen around the school grounds. Staff also entered into the spirit

of the occasion, by dressing up in a variety of outfi ts to support the girls. Special mention should go to Miss Powell, Director of Year 9 and PE Teacher, for her imaginative ‘Work Out Barbie’.

Key Stage 4 students were not left out and had the opportunity to take part in this good cause, by dressing up and running a mile in their PE lessons, throughout the week.

Henry Burstow and his bookRem-iniscences of Horsham will be celebrated in an exhibition at Horsham Museum until July 1.

The museum said: “How of-ten have we sat in a pub or café, thoroughly absorbed in listening to a local ‘character’ describing their extraordinary memories, just wish-ing it could somehow be recorded? Well, something similar did hap-pen in 1911, and Henry Burstow’s colourful memories of Victorian Horsham were published.

“It certainly was the best of times and the worst of times for Henry Burstow: for, like many people living in the Victorian era, poverty was never far away. Burstow’s Reminiscences of Hor-sham was published in 1911, at a time when most books were writ-ten by the wealthy, the famous and the powerful.

“Yet Henry Burstow was none of these things: he was a poor, working-class cobbler, born in 1826. However, his lowly status betrayed the fact that he was a highly intelligent man blessed with a fantastic memory.

“ Over the years, he used his extraordinary memory, skills and talents to benefit the local commu-nity, and later, to provide a wealth of memories that were captured in one of this country’s earliest oral histories. Given his legacy to Hor-sham, it is sad to think that such a vibrant and charismatic personality endured such financial hardship.

“Drawing on Reminiscences of Horsham, this exhibition will provide fascinating glimpses into Henry Burstow’s humble world, against the backdrop of a captivat-ing and colourful Victorian world in the ‘Reminiscences’ of those

who lived around him. It will tell of some of the quirks of Victorian Horsham as remembered in his book, alongside some political and royal events of the era.

“Discover the rivalry between our local public houses, as docu-mented by image and song, and be entertained by Victorian Horsham scandal; enjoy descriptions of some of our more outrageous yet colourful characters… learn what ‘beggar-pooking’ was, read about some of Horsham’s villains, and discover the stories of some of Vic-torian Horsham’s more eccentric individuals!

“To celebrate Henry Burstow and his Victorian Horsham, this exhibition will feature the strange, the wonderful and the everyday. Living in poverty, mice were a huge problem when it came to storing food, therefore objects on show will include various Victorian mouse-traps: some that killed by squash-ing, some by decapitating and one that was a four-mouse mousetrap - a ghastly thought for most of us now, though necessary back then!

“There will also be many original paintings and photographs of old Horsham on display, along with a generous helping of documents relating to Henry Burstow’s life and book,Reminiscences of Horsham. “

This exhibition will also recall some of Henry Burstow’s involve-ment in bell-ringing: from cracked bells to the diverse social politics such as the rivalries of perfor-mance between bell ringing groups in the area.

The museum said: “Possessing an extraordinary memory, our poor yet ‘noble artisan’ Henry Burstow also knew 420 songs by heart and could recite them on demand; his legacy as folk singer continues today, nationally.”

A centenary edition of Henry Burstow’s book Reminiscences of Horsham containing many rare photographs and images to cel-ebrate and commemorate his life is also being published by the Friends of Horsham Museum, in conjunc-tion with this exhibition.

Horsham Museum is open Monday-Saturday 10-5, admission free. The Museum will be open on Good Friday and Easter Monday but closed on other public holidays. Scenes from the book are pictured.

NHS workers are outstanding at learning from mistakes, according to a survey.

The Sussex Community NHS Trust has been ranked “outstand-ing” and is the tenth top

NHS Trust out of 230 in England for its ability to learn from mis-takes.

The league is published by the Department of Health and ranks trusts on their “openness and

honesty” based on data safety reporting and the latest NHS staff survey results published in

February. The table includes 230 NHS trusts

with the trust ranked tenth and is rated “outstanding”. Other

categories include “good”, those

who have “signifi cant concerns”, and those with a “poor

reporting culture”.The trust’s chief executive Paula

Learning from mistakes wins accoladeGood learners A growing village is set to get a

heart transplant.Residents of Billingshurst are being asked to comment on changes to the village centre to help it cope with its expansion.Horsham District Council gave the go-ahead for a consultation on a “supplementary planning docu-ment” that has been produced in collaboration with the Parish Council, Community Partnership and Chamber of Commerce. It sets

out future priorities for the village centre. The district council says that Bill-ingshurst has experienced signifi -cant population growth in the last 20 years and it is recognised that the village centre needs to undergo substantial improvements to sup-port this growing resident popula-tion and to improve its appeal to visitors. The consultation is open to the public to express their views until April 29 and can be viewed on the

council’s website atwww.horsham.gov.uk. A Copy of the document is available to view in Billingshurst Library and the Billingshurst Centre. Pupils from two Horsham schools celebrated ten years in the Rock Challenge with a clutch of awards for excellence.

Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee School and Millais School were celebrated on the night of their contest at The Hawth, Crawley, one of two nights on which the contest was held.

The Spirit of Rock Challenge® Award allows those taking part to nominate the team they think has been the friendliest and most sup-portive towards the other schools and Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee School was also recognised by its peers and won this award in their 10th celebratory year.

Sussex Police Chief Constable Giles York attended the show and said : “It’s about the 8thtime I’ve been to Rock Challenge and the lovely thing is I wanted to be here tonight. The great thing about Rock Challenge is it positively affects so many children for such a long period of their school year and seeing the joy on their faces is just brilliant.”

The event was supported by PQA, West Sussex County Council- Think Family, Sussex Police, Anti-Bully-ing Works and Ansvar Insurance. It was won by Angmering School.

All the world’s a stage and all the girls of “Prep 6” merely players.

The Globe Theatre opened its doors once more to Farlington Prep from Horsham and took them on a magical tour round the world of Shakespeare. They were enter-tained by a very fl amboyant actor, with feathered cap and full length swirling leather coat reminiscent of the Pied Piper. He gave a wonderful talk on the life and times of Shake-spearian London, from the heads on Traitors’ Gate to the frost

fairs on the Thames.At the Studio the youngsters

were put through our paces, doing scenes from ‘Macbeth’,

taking on the roles of Banquo, Macbeth, and the three weird sisters. The schools said that girls thoroughly enjoyed taking on dif-ferent personalities and learning key lines from the play.

After lunch they returned to the theatre and visited the exhibition, looking at diff erent interactive ar-eas, from special eff ects to playing

chords on a synthesised lute. They also had the opportunity

to fi nd out what it would be like to wear costumes in Shakespeare’s time.

One pupil, Roseanna, was dressed from head to toe in the costume of a shepherdess, while another,Millie, had the chance to wear the jacket worn by ‘Richard the Third’.

So, as the school said: “One could say that ‘All’s well

that ends well’.

Local Artist prepares for exibitionBusinessMartin Read - News Reporter

Local artist Jeremy Bridle’s cur-rent exhibition at Horsham’s Capitol is not to be missed.

Although Jeremy has done sea-scapes he specialises in portraits and his larger than life depiction of David Bowie is a particularly striking and colourful example of the power of his work. Jeremy says: “The most satisfying thing in the world is to create something –

doing that gives me a great sense of achievement. There is nothing more interesting than the human form and that’s why I’m always drawn back to paint it.”

Born, raised and educated in Horsham, Jeremy works on his portraits in his Warnham studio using brushes and scrapers to apply the oil paints on to canvases that he constructs himself. The Bowie portrait took around twenty hours of work to complete, not including drying time between applications.

Jeremy continues: “At Tanbridge School art and sport were my best subjects and I had a long standing wish to take up painting in a seri-ous way, but with a young family time was at a premium until around five years ago when I did an A level art course at Collyers. I then joined the evening class at Farlington school run by Rosalyn Sprey where under her guidance and encourage-ment my portraiture really took off with my kids, friends and stock photos being my early subjects and, more recently, influential figures from the music world.”

While the paintings fund themselves, Jeremy runs his own decorating business – Paragon - but hopes to develop his artwork to the point where he can concentrate solely on producing paintings. He has been shortlisted for the National Open Art Awards and par-ticipated in exhibitions with other students, but the Capitol showing is his first solo event. Jeremy sums up saying: “I aim to create engag-ing paintings through the bold use of texture and layers of colour!”

Horsham Company win Gatwick Diamond Business Award

Rudridge in Horsham has de-livered 50 Easter eggs to local charity, Chestnut Tree House chil-dren’s hospice, in Arundel.

The team at the civil engineering and groundwork material special-ists, located on Handcross Road, bought a range of Easter eggs for the children, at Chestnut Tree House, and their families.

The children’s hospice caters for Sussex and cares for 300 children,

and young adults, with progressive life-shortening conditions. It cur-rently costs over £3.5 million each year to provide care services, both at the hospice and in families’ own homes.

Terrina Barnes, Corporate Fun-draiser at Chestnut Tree House, commented: “We’re very grateful to Rudridge for donating Easter eggs to Chestnut Tree House. It is donations from companies, like

Rudridge, that will put a smile on the children’s and families’ faces this Easter.”

Three familiar and much-loved stars will be flying back to The Capitol’s stage this Christmas for the spectacular family panto-mime, Aladdin..CBBC star Olly Pike, is set to play the title role. Since Beauty and The Beast, he has continued work with his company, Pop’n’Olly, to promote LGBT diversity and equal-ity education for children. His work is adopted by schools and charities around the UK, often being used to help train teachers in how best to

include LGBT Education within the classroom.

Olly’s most recent animation and book, Jamie, is being shown at the Rainbow Reels festival in Ontario, Canada. This year, he is hoping to do some live Pop’n’Olly’ shows for the very first time, as well as pro-ducing another book and further videos, which can be seen at www.youtube.com/popnolly

Olly can’t wait to return to The Capitol and said: “I’m really excited for Aladdin, since the character

portrays a hero - without really wanting to be one, which I think gives a great message to people. Aladdin just does what’s right and tries to stay true to himself.

“I’m thrilled of course, to be working again with Mike, Richard and Nick. They are such wonderful people to be around and we have a tremendous amount of fun!”

Mike Goble will be playing Wishee Washee. After entertain-ing Horsham’s audiences as D’Jon M’Stard in Beauty and The Beast last year, he found time for a short holiday in Paris, including some fun at Disneyland, and is looking forward to presenting Ministry of Science Live in the UAE, on P&O Cruises, as well as an autumn UK theatre tour, ahead of the pan-tomime run. Occasionally, you might see him pop up at Legoland, Windsor, performing in their Pirate Stunt Show, or storytelling at the puppet theatre.

He’s recently been commis-sioned to write 7 clown routines, for holiday destinations around Eu-rope, by Live Business, to entertain their young guests and families. A personal highlight this year is the honour of being asked to be Best Man for the first time!

Mike loves Horsham, which has been home for Christmas for the past two years, and he now sees it as “spending time with his panto family”, both on and off stage. He’s delighted to be sharing the stage, once again with Olly and Richard, and to be reunited with the great behind-the-scenes team at the theatre. Mike said: “My last two pantomimes at The Capitol have been such a joy to be a part of and after last year’s record-breaking Beauty and the Beast, I can’t wait to welcome our audience back to

enjoy another fun-filled production for all the family.”

Richard Alan is looking forward to playing a slightly more serious role this year, as The Emporer of China. He can’t wait to return to Horsham and The Capitol, in par-ticular, and says: “It’s like coming home for Christmas and being part of one big family, and I really enjoy being part of a show that’s been produced in-house.”

Since performing in last year’s panto, Richard has been busy rehearsing for a new season at But-lins, which runs until November, performing in a new show “Time Travel Trouble” for younger chil-dren and entertaining the crowds with circus skills, including stilt-walking, unicycling and juggling.

After positive feedback on last year’s box-office breaker, many had hoped to see a return of the most popular cast members, so the Capitol are delighted to announce their much anticipated return. Nick Mowat, General Manager of The Capitol and Producer of Aladdin, said: “We are so excited to an-nounce the return of our magical trio to The Capitol, for Aladdin, this year. Olly, Mike and Richard are a joy to work with and have proved to be a big hit with our audiences for the past two years. Audiences can expect lots of crazy mayhem, a lot of laughter and, as always, with a Capitol pantomime - a thumping good story.”

With rich harmony vocals, Blake launched their fi rst album in 2007, just 6 months after reuniting as friends on Facebook. The debut album went straight to number one in the UK Classical Album Chart and into the Top Twenty Pop Chart.

The public embraced their debut album immediately, with over 100,000 copies being sold in just three weeks and earning the group their fi rst Gold Disc. The music in-

dustry followed in early 2008, when the album received the prestigious Brit-Award for Album of the Year, a huge honour for a group still less than a year old.

Philip Jordan, Chief Executive of Henry Adams, comments on the BudgetConfi rmation in today’s Budget that the surcharge of 3% Stamp Duty Land Tax on second homes and investment proper-ties will indeed come into force from the start of April was disappointing but not entirely unexpected.

The impact in the market over coming months remains to be seen but the continued squeeze on the private rented sector by the government means private landlords who are planning to add to or who are starting their portfolio really have to take a longer term view to their invest-ment, which is possibly the Chancellor’s intention. It could also enable fi rst time buyers a window of opportunity with fewer investors in the market to compete against when buying starter homes.

A more level playing fi eld for landlords will be created now that large scale investors will also subject to the Stamp Duty surcharge, although that is less likely to impact the outer regional markets less than the Build to Rent sector emerging in more urban locations including, of course, London.

Interestingly the Chancel-lor has also announced reforms to Stamp Duty on commercial property which come into ef-fect at midnight tonight. The changes, which include seeing commercial freehold proper-ties under £150,000 attract zero rate, should benefi t smaller businesses which should in turn help to breathe life back into some of our local high streets and that has got to be good news for shopkeepers and local com-munities.

I was reading an article recently in The Negotiator, a publication for estate agents, which said “an online estate agency service fails to give the vendor what they want at almost every stage

of the house selling process”. I’ve also heard feedback from

several sellers who have used online estate agents in the past, who have said “never again”.

Without a doubt, there are online estate agencies out there to which criticism like this does apply. They tend to be large national agencies which charge a low upfront fi xed fee. All enquir-ies will go through a national call centre and the service will be impersonal. Their philosophy is if you only paid £495 + VAT you can’t expect the service to be equivalent to that of a high street agent. Using them can work, but only if you are prepared to do viewings, negotiate off ers and chase solicitors yourself.

At the other end of the estate agency spectrum is the tradi-tional local high street agent. In the Horsham district, on average, you can expect to pay fees of 1.2% inc VAT - so £3,600 on a property which sells for £300,000. Your fee buys local expertise in valuing your property, as well as photog-raphy, fl oor plans, brochures, ac-companied viewings, negotiation

of off ers, and post-sales chasing to ensure the sale completes. After all, the agent’s fee is on a no-sale, no-fee basis, so it’s in their interests to fi nish the job. Even then, we hear time after time that vendors and purchas-ers are not happy with the service they get for the money they pay. Bear in mind, though, that the fee you pay also has to cover the costs of running a high street of-fi ce, including rent and business rates.

Despite winning again – for the fi fth consecutive time and only losing once since October 24 - Horsham’s chance of promotion back into the Women’s Confer-ence East League at the fi rst at-tempt disappeared when South-gate and Barnes both won their fi nal games.

With runaway champions Sur-biton ineligible for promotion, Southgate go up, Horsham fi nish-ing their league programme just two points adrift, on level pegging with Barnes but shaded into fourth spot on fractional goal diff erence.

Suzy Clapp slotted home a pen-alty and then Alexandra Malzer, in between England duties, scored the second ahead of a goal-less second half.

Team Manager Jane Denman told the District Post: “It’s been a great season and it was asking a bit much for all of the other results to go our way! There were games that we might have won when we suff er-ing from injuries, but every team could say that.” Captain Gill Adams sidelined all season and recovering from knee surgery said: “We didn’t quite make it but we’ll come back even more determined in Septem-ber.”

With fi ve forced changes to the line up for the long trip into Kent to play 3rd placed Deal & Bette-shanger this was always going to be a tough match to get anything from, and so it proved.

Horsham came under early pres-sure and following a penalty Liam Giudes scored a well worked try for the hosts, and Connor Moss con-verted. Horsham fought back and following a quick break Ollie Har-cus crossed the line for a try that Tom Johnson converted for 7-7. Then Johnson missed a kick at goal before Moss extended the home sides lead with a penalty. However with Bell, Wilde, Watts and Wilson causing havoc with their pace and trickery Horsham always looked a threat and it was Watts who

crossed the line for his fi fteenth try of the season which was converted by Johnson, and after 25 minutes Horsham lead 14-10. Horsham however were pegged back to a lead of 14-13 just before the break through a Moss penalty.

The home sides’ powerful scrum started to take its toll on Horsham in the second half and after being driven back Horsham conceded a try to Number 8 Hinkins which was converted by Moss. Horsham continued to press their hosts hard but despite threatening the Deal & Betteshanger try line they were unable to add to their 14 fi rst half

points and the home side held on for the win.

Horsham coach Nick Stocker said: “With four changes to our starting pack we knew we might struggle to gain a solid platform, but when we put pace on the ball we asked a lot of questions and stretched a resolute defence that has not conceded many points this season and is one of the best in the league. I’m obviously disappointed that we lost but I’m pleased with our application, eff ort, tenacity, spirit and sheer bloody minded-ness, and the players in this young side did themselves justice.”

Horsham’s next fi xture is at home to Beckenham on April 2 when there is a reunion lunch of former players and their partners from Graham Boswell’s 1985/86 Lions side.

Pulborough moved up to seventh with a hard fought bonus point win against higher table opposi-tion.

Brad Game scored Boro’s fi rst try after an early Folkestone penalty success. Then Henry Lee crossed the line, converted by Frazer Oliphant-Hope but Boro assisted Folkestone with penalties, the sides standing on twelve points apiece at the break. Then, up the slope but with a following wind, Harvey Strudwick scored a further try, again maximised by Frazer, before the Kent side followed suit, restoring parity at 19-19, until a

long run by Harvey culminated in an off load enabling Captain Simon Burfi end to score under the posts, Frazer’s conversion and a subse-quent 45 metre penalty securing Boro’s 29-19 win.

Boro Head Coach Clayton Saun-ders told the District Post: “This was a fantastic win – four tries to one – and if we hadn’t kept them in the game with fi rst half penalties our winning margin would have been far greater. Just six points separate fi ve teams in our part of the table so there’s still plenty to play for but the gaps in the league fi xtures are a bit frustrating be-cause we want to keep the momen-tum going.”

Boro return to the fray on Sat-urday April 2 with an away fi xture against high fl ying Aylesford Bulls, against whom they suff ered a rare home defeat in December.

Hornets cruise to victory away at Uckfi eld

A fi ne Terry Dodd hat-trick and a brace from Kieron Pamment ensured a comfortable Horsham victory at AFC Uckfi led that kept up their pursuit of Eastbourne Town.

It could of all been so much better because when it looked like Eastbourne Town were about to lose at home to Loxwood they equal-ised late on in normal time before hitting the winner 6 minutes into added time, to the disappointment of all associated with the Hornets.

Against Uckfi eld Horsham dominated from the start and could have been two up in the opening

minutes as they pounded the home sides’ goal. With 21 minutes gone Horsham fi nally got the break-through their dominance warrant-ed; Dodd was played in by Darren Boswell and made no mistake in slotting past ‘keeper Firman. The now rampant Hornets nearly made it 2-0 within seconds of the restart when Adam Hunt hit the bar. It did not take long though to double the lead as Pamment tapped home after Joe Shelley had forced Firman to parry his long range eff ort. Two minutes later on the half hour mark it became 3-0 when Shelley’s nod back into the area was met by Dodd who headed in from close range.

After the break Dodd completed his hat-trick within 3 minutes of the restart and with that the match was over as a contest - if it wasn’t before then. The visitors nearly

grabbed a consolation when Gree-nall’s well struck shot cannoned off the post but the slight revival from Uckfi eld was crushed in the 74th minute when Pamment scored his second after a fi ne run through the home defence.

Horsham now host Worthing United on Saturday (March 26). Worthing lost 7-1 at home to Hornets rivals Eastbourne Town on Tuesday evening and East-bourne Town will now travel to Wick & Barnham on Saturday - Wick having lost 5-0 on Tuesday evening - suggesting that both title rivals should record a victory this weekend.

Following Tuesday evenings defeat at Chichester City, Heath have now lost their last two games, failing to score in both.

Against Eastbourne United, each team had a half each where they were the better side - Heath in the fi rst half and United in the second. Against City the Heath attack again failed to register, resulting in a 3-0 defeat.

The welcome return of Piers McDermott against United follow-ing his injury nearly resulted in a goal when his long throw was met by Tim Martin who headed straight

at ‘keeper Broadbent to be followed minutes later by a similar Mc-Dermott throw being headed goal wards by Jake Holmes who forced Broadbent into a good save.

McDermott sadly suff ered a reoccurrence of the injury that has sidelined him for the last few weeks and could play no further part. The second half saw a fl urry of chances for each side but without creating the breakthrough. Then on 65 minutes Heath were made to pay for their missed chances when full-back Shaun Lee got on the end of a corner and powered a header into the net. The goal seemed to defl ate Heath and Eastbourne United went on to dominate the rest of the play, scoring a second through David Smart with 7 minutes remaining.

On Tuesday evening Heath went behind to from a Jimmy Wild strike on the half hour. Two further goals in the second period from Dan Hegarty and Jamie Horncastle sealed a disappointing few days for the Bears.

Horsham YMCA responded to consecutive Premier Division de-feats in style on Saturday, as they smashed struggling Hailsham

Town 7-1 at Gorings Mead.Dan Sullivan opened the scoring

for the home side midway through the fi rst half, only for Stringers forward Jack Divall to level ninety seconds later. The brief scare for the hosts didn’t last long though, as striker Sam Schaaf tapped home to restore YM’s lead three min-utes after, before Luke Donaldson netted his fi rst of the afternoon in added time at the end of the open-ing period.

The young midfi elder doubled his tally to make it 4-1 shortly after the restart and then completed his hat-trick fi fteen minutes later. Substitute Martin Smith grabbed YM’s sixth a minute from time, before Phil Johnson headed home an even later seventh to complete the scoring.

Manager Peter Buckland com-mented: “I didn’t doubt the result, even when they made it 1-1. Prior to that it was a bit open, I must admit. There were two or three

chances at each end, but we had opportunities in the fi rst fi ve minutes to be a couple of goals up. Luke’s (Donaldson) overall con-tribution today was good. I think he’s getting better and better and he is still only young. If you take into account that there was no Nick Sullivan, Ash (Dugdale) and Dave Brown, then it’s a very pleasing performance.

“It was a good response today, but now we’ve got two tough games

coming up against Lancing away and then at home to Horsham. What more motivation do the play-ers need than beating Lancing on a nice 4G surface and then play-ing against Horsham down here in front of what will hopefully be a big crowd.”

Using different materials in the kitchen has become an increasing trend over the years, with stones and glass being used in place of tiles and laminates.

The choice of stone products on the market is big, with a wide range of natural granites to a seemingly endless choice of composite colours and patterns. To make it completely personal we can arrange for you to visit our stonemasonry to select your own slab of stone. Glass splashbacks can bring a burst of colour to your kitchen as well as make the space appear larger and brighter by reflecting light. They also give you a great surface to help keep your kitchen clean after cooking with no grout to get stained. Because the colour is applied to the back of the glass, we’re able to offer an almost limitless choice of colours, similar to the paint colour choice you would get in a hardware store. So if you wanted to match your wall colour, or find something very particular - no problem! (It’s also worth considering that glass splashbacks are comparable in price to tiling a wall once the labour is taken into account.)
