Cllr Jim RaeHorsham District Council - Conservative, Holbrook East

My thanks go to Ben-jamin Coren of The District Post, for his w e l l - r e s e a r c h e d , verifi ed and insight-

ful piece (Friday, January 30, 2015), on the facts and timeline concern-ing the now highly controversial and divisive North Horsham site.

I note that he makes the assertion that the time to have stopped this site ever being progressed by anyone let alone Liberty was in 2009, I am in total agreement with that statement.

I have to ask then, “Why did the controlling 2007-2011 HDC Con-servative administrations headed by Cllr Liz Kitchen and later by Rob-ert Nye, not do just that – kill it off , not bits of it – all of it, when the chance presented itself?”

Is it as Benjamin surmises, that the HDC Conservative administra-tion under Cllrs Liz Kitchen and Robert Nye were open to North Horsham accepting between 4,000-

4,500 houses in exchange for land being set aside for a new hospital; and that they were prepared to take that gamble?

Did the then Leaders not see this as a gamble with our environment, did they not see this as a gamble with the lifestyle of every resident of Holbrook, Roff ey and beyond?

So not only was the site not killed off in 2009, the same administra-tion permitted Liberty a foothold in North Horsham as early as 2010; once in did they ever truly believe Liberty could be evicted? If they did, how naïve of them.

Next as Benjamin Coren correctly states in 2012 two disasters hap-pened, fi rst the enactment of the dreaded NPPF and its presumption in favour of sustainable develop-ment – whatever that may be. Then the CCG pull the plug apparently forever on the dream that was the new hospital, so now some mem-bers of the 2007-11 administration who gambled with our futures and lost either need to face the truth and own up to the electorate or they need to fi nd scapegoats.

Why is it that gamblers always need to blame someone else for their failings?

How could those not elected for the fi rst time until May 2011 be to blame for allowing the site to con-tinue to exist after 2009, or for per-mitting Liberty in through the front door in 2010?

The Class of 2011 when elected was faced with a fait accompli, it now had to deal with the fall-out of that failed gamble by the Class of 2007. Those newly elected had to help create a strategy to somehow limit the damage, to limit it in a way

acceptable to The Inspector and the NPPF – this was never going to sim-ply go away because some members decided they no longer liked the outcome of their failed gamble.

In May I am more than happy to face the electorate and to own up to what I have done over the last 4 years, yes I backed the Green Waste Charge, yes I helped construct the policy to deal with the fi nancial shortfall created by Central Gov-ernment’s “Localisation of Coun-cil Tax Benefi t” (as diffi cult as that was), yes I have been part of an ad-ministration that continues to de-liver quality frontline services, that has not been afraid to make tough fi nancial decisions to protect those services – and that has not raised Council Tax, preferring to leave

monies in the pockets of residents and not in HDC bank accounts.

What I not prepared to do is to re-main silent, when others are trying to make me and those elected with me for the fi rst time in 2011 the scapegoats for their failed gambling with our environment, and with our futures.

Do you know what also truly dis-appoints me?

All I have ever done is to try and protect North Horsham, yet so many now only hear and believe what they want to believe; they are so angry over North Horsham (as I am) that they no longer want to listen to reason – they just want someone to blame and it shows. Pity then, that they have failed to select the correct targets for that anger!

Do gamblers always blame someone else?

Horsham MP to step down at next general election

continues to exercise great appeal. However, 27 years is a long time to serve as a Member of Parliament, and I believe now is the right time to make way for a younger candi-date to carry the Conservative flag in Horsham.”

He added he will also give ‘un-stinting support’ to the Associa-tion’s choice to succeed him.

Mr Maude also said in his letter: “I am increasingly optimistic that the Conservative Party under Da-vid Cameron’s strong and visionary leadership will form the govern-ment after 7th May. This election will offer the country a simple choice between this Conservative compe-tence and Labour chaos. We need to stick to our long-term economic

plan to keep growing the economy, creating more jobs in Horsham and across the country, and paying down the deficit so our children have the best possible future.

Mr Maude has previously held posts under former prime ministers Margaret Thatcher and Sir John Ma-jor and was also chairman of the con-servative party from 2005 to 2007.

Horsham Conservative Asso-ciation said: “Horsham Conserva-tive Association was very sorry to receive the news that the Rt Hon. Francis Maude MP will not be seek-ing re-election on 7th May. Fran-cis has been a truly outstanding Member of Parliament representing Horsham since 1997 when he was elected with a huge parliamentary majority. Since then he has worked

tirelessly to represent his constitu-ency whilst managing high office, both in opposition and Govern-ment. His ability to cut through red tape and see the bigger picture, has resulted in huge savings for taxpay-ers and a real optimism that the economy is on the right track with more jobs and a bright future for everyone.

“Local Conservatives are very proud of all he has achieved during his time as MP and in addition, will miss his warm friendship, dedica-tion to public service, loyalty and support.

Several candidates have already announced their intention to stand at the general election in Horsham.

Osteopathy WorksHorsham

It is that time of year again when we all start to think about health and fitness. We want to drop bad habits and replace them with healthier

ones. A lot of people will start a gym membership or take up a new sport such as running, cycling, swimming or pilates.

Common fitness mistakes, in-cluding too much activity too fast or improper form/equipment, can invariably lead to injuries—often postponing fitness benefits. To as-sist in achieving your new healthy living resolutions, follow these simple steps to maximizing your fitness benefits without risking un-necessary injury:1. Avoid doing too much too soon.

It’s important to start at a level and pace you’re comfortable with. Gradually increase your workload over a series of sessions.

2. Always warm up and cool down when undertaking activity. Warming up prepares you both mentally and physically for per-formance and decreases your risk of being injured. To warm up, simply start your chosen activity at a slower pace. Also remember to cool down after activity ses-sions to help reduce muscle sore-ness and stiffness.

3. Always drink fluids before, during and after activity

4. Quality footwear is a must, many studies have found a relation-ship between the type of footwear worn and the incidence of injuries to the lower limb.

5. Know what to do if an injury oc-curs. Stop your activity and seek professional help.My name is Suzanna Frisby and

I run an Osteopathy clinic in Hor-sham called Osteopathy Works Horsham. I treat various conditions including sports injuries. These in-clude muscle strains and tears, liga-ment sprains, joint problems, nerve irritation, biomechanical problems and much more. It is often useful to resolve any underlying issues prior to starting a new sport. If you sustain an injury during an activity it is advisable to have it assessed and treated as soon as possible. As a keen sports person myself I know how important it is to main-tain good joint, muscles, ligament, tendon and neural health so that you can achieve your desired goals whether it be a race, weight loss or increased fitness. New Year, new you

In a letter to parents last month, Mr Leon Nettley confirmed his decision to retire as Headteach-er of Millais School, with effect from August 31, 2015.

In his letter Mr Nettley wrote: “This decision required consid-erable thought and reflection, but I have concluded that with the building project coming to an end and another Outstanding Ofsted under our belt, that it is the right time for both the school and for me.”

Leon Nettley joined Millais in April 1990 and was made head-teacher in January 1997. Over the last 18 years he has taught and worked with many Horsham res-idents, and has made an impact on the lives of the many students who attended Millais.

Mr Nettley added: “Many of my fondest memories will be of students (past and present) whose enthusiasm, determina-tion, resilience and outstand-ing achievements have always matched my ambition for their success.

“Every day, every week, every term, every year they remind me of why I chose this profession and how rewarding it can be.”

The Governing Body have not yet confirmed the appointment of a replacement headteacher.

Mr Nettley said: “I wish the school all the success it deserves and I thank you and most impor-

tantly your daughters past and present for making my career so enjoyable, rewarding and fulfill-ing. I will be leaving with im-mense pride and fond memories, looking back on my time at Mil-lais with affection, gratitude and personal fulfilment.”

Mr Nettley confirmed his de-cision at a full Governing Body meeting in November 2014 in order to give governors and early indication of his retirement.

The school will continue to run as usual.

The very best of Horsham dis-trict’s food and drink providers were recognized at the 2015 Sussex Food and Drink Awards ceremony held this year at the Amex Sta-dium in Brighton on January 29, with six of them coming away with major awards.

Entrants are nomi-nated by the public and assessed by an expert panel of judges.

Commenting on the district’s successes, Cabinet Member for the Local Economy, Cllr Roger Paterson said: “The outstanding success for our District’s businesses in so many award categories really does prove that Horsham based producers have become leaders of their fields in food and drink. I am immensely proud that all these local compa-nies have done so well, since it un-

derlines the prize winning quality of our local products that have been so well supported and promoted by our enormously popular annual Horsh-am Food & Drink Festivals.”

The Sussex Food and Drink Awards, now in their ninth year,

are the only awards that highlight, recognise and

support Sussex farm-ers and producers and the businesses that sell and promote their produce. Olympic gold medal winner, Sally

Gunnell OBE, is patron to the awards and a great

supporter of locally produced food believing that it is the way for-ward for a healthy lifestyle.

Billingshurst Primary School is opposing the district council de-cision to close one of their school halls to be used as a polling station in the upcoming general election following the introduction of Uni-versal Free School Meals (UFSM) and the need to feed 350 pupils.

The upcoming election is to take place on May 7, 2015, and the schools feels it has been forced by Horsham District Council to close the hall for the whole day of the election.

Headteacher, Helen Wil-liamson said: “In the past, the school has been used as a Polling Station. With the in-troduction of Univer-sal Free School Meals and the need for both our halls to feed over 350 children, I declined the use of the school when approached by Horsham Dis-trict Council.

“Since then there has been a great deal of discussion with HDC as to why I am unwilling to disrupt the education and welfare of the youngest children at the school be-cause I have to shut one hall off to be used as a Polling Station. I have even offered alternative sugges-tions for locations in the village and have offered to mediate between these other organisations to ar-range the hire.”

Alternative locations suggested by Helen Williamson included the Billingshurst Scout hut and the vil-

lage hall.Mrs Williamson said: “It is, I be-

lieve, unacceptable to disrupt the education and legal entitlements of the children of this village when other sites are more suitable. I ap-preciate any parent who has the time to support my view to ensure we do not suffer this disruption again.”

The school asked parents to email the returning officer, Tom Crowley who responded with a statement to all parents and the school.

Mr Crowley, in his letter wrote : “A polling station has been located

at the school since 2009 with the full and continuing sup-

port of Local Educations Authority. We first in-formed the school of our intention to use one of the two halls at the school as a polling station on May 7 for the

general election and lo-cal elections on July 23,

2014, which, in my opinion allowed plenty of time for ar-

rangements, such as inset days to be made.”

He further wrote that no other premises would be suitable in terms of access for disabled people, size and location.

Tom Crowley wrote: “Elections take place on a single day no more than once a year and therefore the level of disruption to schools is minimal when judged against the importance of supporting the dem-ocratic process.”

Schools have a legal duty to offer free hot meals to infant pupils at lunchtime every day.

Join in the fun of Pancake Day in the Carfax on Tuesday, February 17.

Bring the kids to come and watch the proceedings from midday in-cluding mascot races in their special egg and spoon races or, if you are involved with a business, charity or other organisation, why not enter a team of four in Horsham’s Pancake Races.

The course is not at all arduous and is designed to encourage a sen-sible mix of skill and speed. There will be cups and prizes awarded to the winners on the day, including one for the Best Team Fancy Dress, one for the Best Over 40’s Team, one for the Winning Charity Team, one for the Best Individual Fancy Dress, one for the Best Flipper and one for the overall Winning Team.

Children’s TV Star Dave Ben-son Phillips will once again be race commentator as well as helping to entertain the children. Face paint-ers will also be present and hope-fully some artistic activities to amuse the children.

The event is once again organised

by The Rotary Club of Horsham in partnership with Horsham Dis-trict Council and is aimed at raising money for local Charities that are nominated by the participants.

The Main Sponsor for this year’s event is once again locally based highway maintenance Company, Ringway, who will organise the race course and signage, as well as spon-soring the Mascot Race Prizes.

Sainsbury’s will be supplying the pancakes as well as sponsoring a Trophy together with Waitrose, the Non-Stop Party Shop, Rawlison Butler, South East Hearing Centres and Horsham Rotary Club.

Further information and Entry Forms for the Team event can be obtained by emailing [email protected].

So, bring the kids to the Carfax in Horsham for a flipping jolly time. If the weather has been poor, please check the Rotary website www.hor-shamrotary.org.uk in the morning to check that the event is still on as the racing is dependent on suitable underfoot conditions.

The new replacement footbridge across the A24 at Broadbridge Heath is now open to the public, allowing safe passage for pedes-trians and cyclists.

Local residents Claire and Adri-an Clarke and their 7 year old son Charlie were the first members of the public to use the bridge when it was opened by the A24 team on the January 26.

Local residents for the past 20 years, Claire and Adrian live about a ten minute walk from the Horsham side of footbridge.

Claire said: “We cross the A24 every week to shop at Tesco’s and

to walk our friends’ dog, so we are delighted that the new footbridge is now open for use.”

A spokesperson from J Breheny Contractors said: “We are really pleased that the new footbridge is available for the public to use. The assembly of the bridge proved an exciting challenge to the team as it is the largest footbridge we have currently installed being 58.6 metres in length, three me-tres wide and 83 tonnes. It had to be delivered in four sections and craned into place. We would like to thank the travelling public for their patience during the recent

night closures to install the foot-bridge.”

With the nation remembering the death of Winston Churchill 50 years ago on Saturday, January 24, many local people do not know that during 1937 Churchill gave a speech in Horsham that was at-tended by over 1,500 people.

Churchill was invited to speak at the Horsham Conservative Fete in Holbrook Park where he gave an extensive speech attacking pacifi st views.

In the speech Churchill accused the opposition parties to the Na-tional Government of minimising the necessity for the Government’s re-armament programme and said that there was no section which Nazi dictators would sooner attack that the Radicals and trade union-ists. He declared “Among the left Wing intelligentsia was an increas-ing number who considered it their sacred duty to support measures of defence and in the cause of free-dom. Professional pacifi sts would be doing greater service if they went to Germany where the entire popu-lation was being welded into a vast

fi ghting machine”.The speech didn’t say anything

new, Churchill was reiterating views he had expressed previously. However the Worthing and Horsh-am Conservative Association want-ed him, knowing what they would get. Today because of hindsight the relevance of his words are apparent, but if war had not broken out then it would have been just a minor foot-note in the history of the town.

The Government was demand-ing that local authorities should be prepared for war and in light of this the speech can be seen as part of making people aware of what might happen and creating a culture of preparedness.

Just before Christmas of 1937 a meeting was held at County Hall about action in the event of an air raid that was followed in April by a further report and a request by the Royal Sussex regiment to know what Horsham Council were going to do. Then in October the full im-pact of what it meant to be prepared for air attacks and civil defence hit home when the Council discussed and set up a structure to manage its response.

Churchill’s Horsham speech can be seen as part of this awaking re-sponse from Horsham Council in the preparation for war.

An Upper Beeding based nursing and residential home is celebrat-ing after picking up a gold Horsh-am Healthy Workplace Award in recognition of its superior eff orts to help its staff get even healthier.

Valerie Manor Nursing and Resi-dential Home, which employs 52 local people was awarded the Hor-sham District Healthy Workplace Gold Award on January 13, 2015, by Cabinet Member for a Safer & Healthier District, Cllr Sue Rogers from Horsham District Council.

Amongst the many things Valerie Manor have done to receive this recognition include: providing on-site health checks for staff , signing up for the Cycle to Work scheme, providing fruit and healthy food for staff , holding weekly staff boot camps in the garden and provid-ing specialist counselling support

on-site for staff who work in such a demanding environment.

Commenting on the award Cllr Rogers said: “I am delighted to pre-sent this award to Valerie Manor as proof of their continued improve-ment from their last presentation when they gained the Achievement level award in early 2013. It is great that they continue to be an exem-plar in looking after their staff .”

Zoe Bates the manager of the home said: “I am delighted to re-ceive the Gold Award for being a healthy workplace. Our staff ’s health is very important to us, and especially in this fi eld of work, keeping our staff healthy, both physically and mentally, is vital. Exploring ways to reduce stress and treat our staff is also impor-tant to us. In 2014 we arranged In-dian Head massages for those that

wanted them and we also arrange counselling sessions to support our staff in the diffi cult work that they do.’’

The Gold Award is the highest award from Horsham District and Valerie Manor have successfully progressed from Achievement to Gold level during 2014 and have recently had Wellbeing MOTs for their staff from the Horsham Dis-trict Wellbeing team.

The Horsham Healthy Workplace Award is open to any employer in the Horsham district and brings free help and support to build a healthy workforce. For more infor-mation about the award or having staff health checks please contact Beverley Young at Horsham Dis-trict Council on 01403 2125277 or email [email protected].

A 59-year-old man has admitted crashing his car while almost five times the drink-drive limit.

Robert Hutchinson was spotted by a member of the public driving his Nissan Almera erratically on the A281 heading towards Horsham at 5.45pm on Friday, January 30.

As the witness phoned police to describe what he could see, Hutch-ison veered off the road, overcor-rected and crashed head on into a Ford Ka heading south on the road at Mannings Heath.

The Ford span around and the Nissan ended up in bushes.

The driver of the Ford, a 42-year-old woman from Plummers Plain, suffered slight injuries. Hutchin-son was not injured.

When police arrived they found Hutchinson was still sitting behind the wheel. He was breathalysed and found to have 169 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millitres of his breath - almost five times the legal limit of 35 microgrammes.

Hutchinson told police he had been drinking for several hours at home on Friday afternoon but had decided to go shopping for food and then crashed his car.

He had already served a ban for drink-driving after being convict-ed in 2009 and did not have a driv-ing licence.

Hutchinson, of Fir Tree Close, Plummers Plain, was arrested, questioned and later charged with a number of offences.

He was remanded in custody to appear at Chichester Magistrates’ Court on Monday, February 2, where he pleaded guilty to drink-driving, driving without a licence and driving without insurance.

He was released on bail to appear at Crawley Magistrates’ Court for sentencing on February 23.

Superintendent Jane Derrick, the head of roads policing in Sus-sex and Surrey, said: “Hutchinson was not hurt and fortunately his victim only suffered whiplash and bruising but both could have been seriously hurt or even killed.

“Whilst alcohol has an impact upon an individual’s decision making, Hutchinson would have been aware that he shouldn’t have

driven on that day but nonetheless made the decision to do so.

“Drink-driving will not be tol-erated and we have officers out every day looking for and arresting motorists whose selfish behaviour puts people at risk.

“I would like to thank the mem-ber of the public who realised Hutchinson was putting people in danger and called us.

“On another day we might have been able to stop and arrest Hutchinson before the accident happened so I would urge anyone who has similar suspicions about motorists to contact us immedi-ately. Your call really could save lives.”

People in Sussex can text officers on 65999 with the details of people they suspect of drink or drug driv-ing or visit www.operationcrack-down.co.uk.

You can also contact the inde-pendent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

Last year in July, Horsham Garden Music Festival Charity introduced the Young Musicians Showcase as the first event in their popular music festival.

It featured 15 young talented per-formers from the Horsham District aged from 9 - 21 years old perform-ing original compositions.

So how did they get the chance to perform at the festival? They all had passed through an audition process to showcase their talents at the fes-tival.

So now jump forward to this sum-mer of 2015 where Horsham District

Council have invited The Horsham Garden Music Festival to arrange two musical events at the Carfax Bandstand in conjunction with this years annual festival. These will be held on The 4th and 11th of July in the afternoon and will feature this years Young Musicians Showcase.

Held over the two weekends it will give the charity an opportunity to involve lots more young talented musicians and singers. As the audi-tion process and subsequent Young Musicians concert were such an outstanding success, the Horsham Garden Music Festival committee

have decided that they will once again be holding auditions to find this years concerts performers.

They are looking for bands, musi-cians or singers who have a passion for performing, to come forward and audition for a place at one of the two concerts.

Auditions will be held on the 16th February at Q & M studios, Horsh-am, between 10 - 2 pm.

So if you play an instrument as part of a band, a soloist or love singing contact the charity by email [email protected] or calling 07913 435631.

Sainsbury’s Horsham wel-comed the 1st Roffey Brownies to the store to work towards a badge and for a special bakery lesson.

Bakery Manager Robin Davies from the Horsham Store gave the brownies a talk including an in-troduction to baking, how bread is made and a little of the science of baking before offering treats for them to sample.

Whilst at the store the brown-ies also worked towards their Number Fun Badge by listing ingredients for a simple meal, working out the ingredients needed and the cost.

Brown Owl Carol Cornish said “We were thrilled that Sains-bury’s agreed for us to come into the store to research for the badge, and the added bonus of a lesson on baking was wonderful. The girls had a lot of fun learning about the science of bread mak-ing and really enjoyed tasting the Hot Cross Buns.”

Sainsbury’s Horsham Store Manager Derek Boarer, said: “Our store is at the heart of the local community and is impor-tant we can play our part to sup-port it. When we heard about the Brownies visit, we were keen to get involved.”

Local charity Home-Start CHAMS are holding a fundraising even-ing with a difference at Horsham Rugby Club on February 27, start-ing at 7pm.

The evening will involve taking part in ‘Rock & Roll Bingo’ which is a music quiz that is based on the popular game of Bingo. After hear-ing 15 seconds of a popular piece of music players need to identify the singer or band and then cross them off their ‘Bingo’ card if they appear there.

Home-Start CHAMS are organis-ing the evening to raise much need-ed funds for their work support-ing vulnerable local families with young children throughout Craw-ley, Horsham and Mid-Sussex. The charity trains volunteers who visit families facing issues such as isola-tion, financial hardship, or disabil-ity, in order to prevent family crisis or breakdown, so that the children won’t suffer. As more local families are struggling to cope, demand for the charity’s help is increasing and so Home-Start CHAMS are appeal-ing to the local community to come along and support their work.

Aneliese Whittaker, Events & Community Fundraiser at Home-Start CHAMS said, “This will be a great evening to get together with friends and family and enjoy a fun

night out. Tickets are only £10, in-cluding supper and 4 games – that’s a real bargain! We’re looking for-ward to meeting lots of new people from the local area”

If you would like to join in the ‘Rock & Roll Bingo’ craze while sup-porting a great local charity tickets are on sale now. Phone Aneliese on 01293 416327 or e-mail [email protected] to pur-chase tickets or for more informa-tion on the event.

Investment proposals to build on Sussex Police’s crime-fighting capabilities have been given the green light by local Councillors.

Members of the Sussex Po-lice and Crime Panel carried a majority vote in support of a proposal by the county’s Police & Crime Commissioner, Katy

Bourne, to increase the po-lice precept in 2015/16 by

1.98%. This means that local taxpayers will pay

an additional £2.79 for policing per year

per household for a Band D property.

The pro-posal follows

a business case set out by the Chief

Constable for ad-d i t i o n a l

investment to support op-

erational demands including improving

the Force’s ability to tackle child sexual exploitation and respond to incidents of cybercrime.

Mrs Bourne carried out a two-month consultation with resi-dents asking for their views on the proposed increase, which attracted over 2,600 responses.

Mrs Bourne assured members that despite Sussex Police hav-ing to meet a savings target of £57 million over the next four years the additional funding raised by increasing the precept was not an attempt to plug the deficit following a reduced police grant settlement.

Mrs Bourne said after the de-cision was made “I am delighted that the Panel have taken on-board residents’ views and sup-ported this increase in the pre-cept for the year ahead.”

A wholesale review of the way policing services are delivered in Sussex is currently underway to identify how it can meet the future savings requirement and ensure the Force is fit to tackle the changing face of crime in the 21st century.

Investment in police services gets the go ahead

Calling all petrol heads from Hor-sham. Organisers of the Monte Carlo or Bust Banger Rally are in-viting real life Wacky Racers from Horsham to burn rubber for over 1000 miles to Monte Carlo via France, Switzerland and Italy in a Top Gear-style challenge to raise money for charity.

The rally challenges car enthusi-asts to source a banger car for less than £300 and take part in a vari-ety of hilarious challenges along the way competing for points and priz-

es. Teams are encouraged to raise money for a local charity of their choice and can share their progress with supporters back home via live GPS tracking.

Inspired by the classic Paramount film, the 3-day crusade will see over 100 of the finest British bangers visit some of Europe’s most excit-ing locations and experience spec-tacular roads with backdrops of sun, sea, sand and snow. Participants in the 2014 event raised over £100,000 for UK charities.

Rally spokesperson, Cuthbert Ware-Armitage, said: “I am lay-ing down the challenge to the good people of Horsham to join me on Europe’s ultimate banger rally ad-venture. This is a brilliant oppor-tunity to get your team into gear and experience some of the greatest roads in Europe.”

The Monte Carlo or Bust Rally takes place in June and July 2015 and more information can be found on the event website at www.monte-carloorbustrally.com.

Farlington School’s Alice Tar-plee is working hard to achieve her fundraising total of £2,600 which will enable her to take part in a charity expedition to Tanzania with 21 other Farlington students from Years 11, 12 and 13.

So far, Alice, 16, from Cranleigh, has baked cakes to sell at Farlington and sold more cakes at a fundrais-er at a school in Cranleigh before Christmas. She has also undertaken an exhilarating, but terrifying sky dive. Alice is just over the halfway mark in her fundraising and is cur-rently planning a quiz night to gen-erate the final funds.

The money she raises will allow her to visit Tanzania with the com-pany, True Adventure, which will include a six-day sanitation project in a village.

Farlington’s Jane Williams, who took a group of students to Zam-bia for a similar expedition in 2013, said: “The benefits of these trips are enormous, both to the students and to the communities that they help. The company that organises the expedition ensures that the projects are meaningful and envi-ronmentally-friendly, and that the students run the trip and have real responsibilities.

“These expeditions provide a unique personal development and an educational experience second to none. Everyone who took part in the 2013 Zambia expedition, whether they were 16 or 47, was changed by the trip. I’m sure Alice and the oth-er students going to Tanzania will gain a great deal from the invalu-able work that they will undertake.”

As I write these words the fi rst earnest fl urries of snowfl akes are making their way to the ground and settling with a cool disposition.

The days now take a frosty bite from exposed extremities and as a pedestrian and cyclist I become ever more aware of the fragility of the fl esh at the tips of my ears. This is the time when we should be taking stock of our preparedness for winter. We have not lacked in opportunities to purchase snow shovels, to gather grit for the pavements, and to be aware of alerts from the Metoffi ce regarding yellow warnings for snow.

This should not be confused with warnings for yellow snow as that is a concern for another time.

From experience of winters past in Horsham we can expect things to swing from mild spring like mo-ments to days or Arctic turmoil; and in it all the online forums will swell with comments complaining about the lack of gritting, the lack of road clearance, the lack of driver compe-tency, and the general increase in ice.

As ever I can expect the usual

passing comment as I clear my path, the drive, and my part of the road, that I may be setting myself up for a lawsuit. No matter how many times I explain and detail how ridiculous such urban myths are they will walk away shaking their heads at my lack of belief. It would be easier to convince a chemtrail believer of the fallacy in their clouded thinking than to change the mindset those who are constrained from action by the fear of liability.

Granted for every comment di-recting the community to grab their coats, shovels, and muscle power, there will be observations that a few people cant join in for a vari-ety of physical reasons but that is hardly a compelling case to avoid all voluntary eff ort. So when you have fi nished reading this paper I encourage you to contact your local District or Parish council and dis-cover if grit bins and shovels will be made available.

Check your own shed, or storage closet, for the right tools and for the means to clear a path through the snow and ice to come.

We should aim to make 2015 the year in which we stopped living with constraints of liability and en-titlement and took some responsi-bility to clear the way for ourselves and for our neighbors.

February 1, was believe it or not, in the Northern European tradition, the fi rst day of Spring.

St Brigid’s day is a welcome addi-tion to any gardener’s calendar as it symbolises something new. If you are baulking at my suggestion, hav-ing fi rst looked out of the window at the frosts, remember your Sussex tradition.

First cuckoo day, (the fi rst day of summer in Sussex) is traditionally April 14, so please try not to adopt the American system of seasons as your own. It just isn’t cricket.

As it is a time for fresh starts, I’d just like to say well done to Nigel for all his hard work making Newbridge Nursery such a great nursery and welcome to the new Blue Diamond owners. I look forward to seeing what you can achieve.

In the gardens, the daff odils are in blossom along with the beauti-ful snowdrops, bringing cheer to what can be a glum time for some. There are also other plants that are in fl ower now, if you seek them out, which may bring an even bigger smile to your face.

Sarcoccoca confusa (Sweet Box) is a plant which at this time of year fi lls a garden with a heady scent. If planted in swathes in a border, or at your back door, you will surely be lifted on a cold day.

Supposedly tough as old boots, it can in actuality be fussy, liking deeper soil, so be aware if it begins turning yellow, it may not be too happy where it is. Feed it and then move it. Daphne bholua ‘Darjeel-ing’ is another plant which is highly scented, with attractive leaves, this time off ering a spicy lemon odour.

Hamemellis (Withchazel) is an-other - a tree if left to grow to full

height - again a plant that will fi ll quite a large space with pleasant perfume. However, be aware before you buy. Yellow fl owered varieties are the colour to go for if you want the stronger scents.

The Mahonia x charity is another excellent structural plant, which on a sunny day will give off a strong, heady smell. There are some I no-ticed in Horsham park, which were blooming successfully until some clout decided to prune everything within an inch of its life. Which just goes to prove that not all plants should be pruned in the depths of winter, or early spring. Some, espe-cially those that fl ower early, need to be pruned at a diff erent time. It also proves that if you are canny and choose your plants well, you can fi ll your garden with scent from the start of spring to the end of winter.

Hollywood’s DeLorean car will be at Swan Walk on Saturday, Febru-ary 7 as innovative online estate agency Zoom995 take Horsham ‘Back to the Future’. Shoppers will be invited to be photographed with a Doc Brown lookalike and his famous time-machine parked at the swan mosaic outside the Su-perdrug store throughout the day.

As part of Zoom995’s new cam-paign to build consumer awareness about the future of the property in-dustry, the event celebrates Back to the Future Part 2 when Doc Brown and Marty McFly go back to the fu-ture and arrive in 2015.

Stuart Robinson, director at Zoom995, said: “We’ve all had the-ories of what the future might hold, like hoverboards and the self-tying trainers in the movie which Nike are now designing. What might sound like a mad idea now could be the next big thing in 50 years. No-one thought that the future of es-tate agents would be online, but the fact is that it’s happening and for the simple reason that it’s quick, easy and a fraction of the cost.”

Zoom995’s experienced estate agents will be on hand at the event to answer any questions and to talk to shoppers about the benefits and financial savings to be had by sell-

ing their properties online at a fixed rate of just £395 + VAT.

For further information about Zoom995 visit www.zoom995.co.uk or call 0333 358 3095.

Shoppers in Horsham are being taken ‘Back to the Future’

A marketing communications ex-pert and former District Post edi-tor from Horsham has set up his own consultancy to help business-es improve their writing.

James Hood, the editor at Fine Sussex magazine, is now helping clients across the South and in Lon-don to write more effectively and banish complex corporate waffle and jargon.

James has been a copywriter and communications professional for over 12 years and told The District Post that effective, well-structured writing is not just a luxury or ‘nice-to-have’ for companies that want to get ahead.

“Good writing is essential for businesses, directors and market-

ing pros who want to get more cus-tomers, sell more products or ser-vices, and make more cash.

“If your marketing material is written to encourage an action, in-spire an emotion or even written so simply that it gets read and under-stood by more people, you’re go-ing to have more success as a busi-ness”, James said.

With ‘brand language’ a big buzz word in business at the moment, increasingly organisations are turn-ing to communications experts like James to help them create market-ing messages that will help them attract and keep customers.

James added: “An organisation’s ‘tone of voice’ or ‘brand language’ is all about the way you behave in your written and verbal commu-nications. For example are you a young, quirky, hip start-up that wants a street-wise tone? Or are you a 100 year-old accountancy firm that needs to have a distinguished, decisive tone. It all helps create a brand that people can associate with and therefore buy from.

“We have seen the positive effect that a well thought out brand lan-guage can have to organisations like Innocent Smoothies and Virgin. But it doesn’t have to be as obvious as that. There are ways you can make the writing on your website, mar-keting literature and even in your emails better to ensure they achieve whatever you want them to. If it’s done well, that can translate into more profit.”

To hire James to create marketing communications that win you more business, call 07900923458, email [email protected] or go to conveyconsultancy.co.uk for more about the services available.

The editor on a mission to banish business waffle

Some of James’ top tips for business writing success are:

Cut the jargonIndustry-specific terminol-

ogy is lazy or just makes the writer feel important. Change technical words to something even a 10-year-old would un-derstand. It’s just good man-ners.

Cut to the chaseDon’t dance around an is-

sue or start emails with ‘I just thought I’d email you to tell you that…’ Get to the point - and fast. People have very little time for waffle these days. The direct approach will mean your writing actually gets read.

Who cares? When writing to anyone, but

especially to customers, ask yourself ‘who cares?’ It will help you to include the essen-tial information and not star-tle your reader with page after page of words.

Stop ‘passionating’ all over the place

If I had a pound for every time I’d read the words ‘we are passionate about’ I would probably be sipping a Mojito in Barbados right now. My point is words like ‘passionate’ and ‘committed to’ are so overused they have become meaningless to most consumers. Use the short time you have to get their attention and tell them some-thing they will value.

‘MyKindaCrowd’ recently vis-ited Collyer’s to deliver an ‘Em-ployability Skills’ Workshop, in conjunction with Starbucks. 30 students participated in ac-tivities incorporating: prob-lem solving, creative thinking, working with different people, time management, presentation skills and interactive challenges.

The event culminated with the group being split into teams, where they each worked on a presentation of their idea for something that would help the local com-munity. Carleigh Annetts, Shannen Cooney and Kim Stamp formed the winning team, whose idea for work-ing with the el-derly won them each a £20 Ama-zon voucher.

In addition, Emily Scott, Kim Stamp, So-phie Ward, Chloe Lawrence and Oliver Robb were selected as five ‘stand out’ students who will now represent Collyer’s at the Starbucks follow-up event in London on March 6, where they will receive a masterclass in in-terview skills and have the op-portunity to discover more about employment and apprenticeship opportunities within Starbucks.

Carleigh Annetts said: “I found the workshop a really interesting and good experience. I also feel that the group presentation and workshop helped me to develop more confidence and build on my

team working skills”.Lucy Hargreaves from the

college’s Progression Directo-rate, who helped organise the event, said: “It was great to see such enthusiasm, with the qui-eter students coming to the fore, growing in confidence and standing up and presenting for the first time.”

MyKindaCrowd’s inspirational Sam Michaels said: “I was hugely impressed with the ideas that came out in such a short time.

They were original ideas and what was won-

derful, was the fact they were utilis-

ing the skills of everyone in the group for their ‘youth chal-lenge idea’. It was great to see students re-

ally come out of themselves

throughout the ses-sion and in particular

the 5 students chosen to come along on the assessment day. They showed enthusiasm, crea-tivity, team work and a great work ethic! A very well done to all!”

Collyer’s Vice Principal, Steve Nicholls said: “Thanks to Lucy, Sam and everyone involved for making this important event possible. The skills these stu-dents are developing will prove vital in their future careers and I’m sure the five ‘stand out’ stu-dents will be great ambassadors for Collyer’s and Horsham on the March 6.”

Daisy Group has announced the acquisition of Damovo UK Limited, a provider of voice-critical unified communications to the public and private sector.

Horsham based Microsoft and Cisco Gold badge holder Damovo is the former enterprise sales and ser-vice division of Ericsson.

A market leader in public and

enterprise-focused Information Communication Technology (ICT) services and solutions, Damovo UK delivers essential services to more than 250 organisations, including a number of high profile customers in aviation, transportation and gov-ernment.

As a strategic technology part-ner of Cisco, Mitel and Microsoft, its portfolio includes unified com-munications and collaboration, en-terprise networks, contact centres, as well as cloud services and global managed services.

With growth in its enterprise base highlighted as a key area of focus, the Daisy leadership team believes it is perfectly positioned to devel-op the Horsham-based operation through its specialist managed ser-vices proposition.

Daisy Group founder and execu-tive chairman Matthew Riley said: “This is the first acquisition we have undertaken since Daisy’s pri-vatisation and enhances our capa-bility in the enterprise space. With strong vendor relationships and an expert team in place, the business is well positioned for growth under our ownership.

“The converging world of tradi-tional telecoms and IT continues to present exciting opportunities and with a rapidly expanding cloud and managed services division the ac-quisition of this highly scalable UK business is a clear strategic fit for the Group.”

It’s good news for arthritis suf-ferers this week, as Horsham based company Norstar Magnet-ics announce the re-release of the highly acclaimed Magnessage, a portable Magnetic Field Therapy (MFT) device which in the past has proved very popular in the treat-ment of joint, bone and muscle pain, as well as for a whole host of other health issues.

Also known affectionately as the magic wand, it’s been unavailable for the past 18 months but is now back after a re-design.

Some of the Magnessage’s more impressive attributes are that it can penetrate plaster cast and can treat painful areas without even com-ing into contact with the skin and it rose to fame in 2011, after it was used to help the infamous Labrador Vinnie, who was rescued by come-dian David Walliams.

Although at times controversial, the use of magnetics to maintain health and treat health issues and injuries is becoming an increasingly popular, natural, non-invasive and pain free alternative to conven-tional medicines and treatments. And as long ago as 2004 the British Medical Journal reported on a sur-vey commissioned by the Arthritis Research Campaign, which report-edly found that magnetic bracelets

significantly reduced pain for os-teoarthritis sufferers.

What’s more the Magnessage can be used for both the treatment of humans and pets suffering from a vast range of complaints.

Founder of Norstar Magnetics, Alan Cooke, set up the company in 2007 after accidently discovering the benefits of MFT and recently explained how it all came about,

Mr Cooke said: “At the time I was working at Gatwick and somewhat cynically I tried a magnetic brace-let to see whether it could help with my high blood pressure. The improvement in my health was al-most instant but I still found it hard to believe that Magnetic Therapy could have such an impact. I decid-ed to try and learn more and soon friends and work colleagues were reporting impressive results both for themselves and for their pets as a result of using the products I’d recommended to them. I’ve always wanted to run my own business and as I became increasingly convinced and excited about the effectiveness of MFT, starting Norstar Magnetics seemed the obvious next step. The Magnessage was an instant success so I’m really delighted to be able to announce the re-launch of this new and improved version.”

Norstar Magnetics stock a wide range of MFT devices and their web-site includes articles about Magnetic Therapy and details of forthcoming educational events. The Magnes-sage is now available via their web-site at www.norstarmagnetics.com.

The girls in Farlington’s Prep 1 gave their first violin concert to family and friends at the end of last term. The four- and five-year-olds have enjoyed their first term’s instruc-tion on the instrument from Brian Dallimore, Farlington Prep and Lower School Music Teacher, and Sheraine Lynsdale-Nock, violin teacher.

Brian Dallimore said: “I was very impressed by how motivated and fo-cused the girls have been through-out. We have been very fortunate to have had such an experienced and patient violin teacher as Mrs Lyns-dale-Nock, or ‘Mrs Violin’ as the girls call her, working with us dur-

ing the term. The girls have learnt both pizzicato and bowing on open strings, and in their final open con-cert demonstrated these techniques proficiently in several pieces.”

Mrs Hayes, Prep 1 teacher, said: “The violin lessons have had a very positive impact on the class. It is wonderful to find hidden talents in the girls, and the lessons have proved an excellent way of develop-ing teamwork within the group.”

It is argued that making music in the early and primary years in-creases listening and concentration skills, and enhances a child’s abil-ity to discriminate between sounds which can improve phonetic aware-

ness and help to develop language and literacy skills.

At Farlington, where the music department was a finalist in the Music Teacher Awards for Excel-lence, music-making is strongly encouraged. As Brian Dallimore comments: “Music-making in small groups promotes teamwork and is hugely enjoyable. Pupils’ confidence can also be enhanced if they have opportunities to perform. If they are having fun, they are more likely to continue playing an instrument. This term, we are roll-ing out whole class violin tuition for the girls in Prep 2 and I can’t wait to hear the results!”

There was not a seat free in the house when Ariel students per-formed in their annual showcase.

The drama academy, which is based at Steyning Grammar School every Saturday morning, has gone from strength to strength, grow-ing from a handful of students to 98 young actors aged between 5 and 19.

The evening was a full-scale show featuring hard-hitting drama piec-es, imaginative dance numbers and well performed songs from both musicals and current artists. High-lights included some students per-forming challenging monologues they had learnt for their recent Lam-da (London Academy of Dramatic Art) exams, a complex and poignant drama piece called ‘Mobile’, which was performed by the older actors and portrayed them communicating on mobile phones in the lead up to the 1999 Paddington train crash, a drama tribute to World War One and younger pupils singing their heart out as they performed numbers from Frozen and Matilda and also recreated the atmospheric witches scene from Macbeth.

Steyning Principal, Marisha Jenkins said: “I am so proud of what the stu-dents have achieved, their progress has been remarkable and it is great to see their skills developing and to be able to track their improvement. Everyone worked so hard towards the showcase and it was great to fill the auditorium, we have had such lovely feedback from parents. For our next showcase we are planning to move to the Capitol Theatre in Horsham as we now need more room!”

Celebrating 50 years of UK number one hit singles, the Magic of Mo-town brings its brand-new 2015 Reach Out Tour to town.

Songs like Dancing in the Street, My Girl, Where Did Our Love Go, My Guy and Baby Love rocketed Mo-town to the top of the singles charts in 1964, says show producer Michael Taylor.

“Incredibly, 100 more Motown No1s followed worldwide,” he says. “The Magic of Motown 2015 Reach Out Tour brings to the stage 36 of these chart toppers back-to-back in one critically-acclaimed produc-tion.”

Direct from the USA, The Magic of Motown promises fi ve-star per-formances that will authentically revive the style and sophistication of everyone’s favourite Motown legends.

“This year we’re proud to an-nounce that the show will include more number one hits than ever before,” says Michael.

Classic hits from the Tempta-tions, Four Tops, Jackson 5, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Lionel Richie and The Supremes are packed into the two-hour spectacular.

“As well as dazzling dance moves and glittering costumes galore,” says Michael. “the elusive, authen-tic sound of Motown is recreated by our incredible Magic of Motown band.”

The group, especially put to-gether for the show, celebrate their tenth year together on this tour.

“In their capable hands,” says Michael, “you can guarantee that

the score will be – with a nod to the great Stevie Wonder – uptight... al-right and out of sight!”

In 1964 Motown crossed the At-lantic to become a musical phenom-enon on these shores. The labels’ touring concert show, the Motown Revue starring Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, the Temptations, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, (Little) Stevie Wonder and Diana Ross and the Supremes, paved the way for Motown’s chart-storming success in the UK. That year the UK singles charts were peppered with Motown songs.

To mark the occasion, The Magic of Motown brings an all-new pro-duction for 2015 to the stage with a 100-date nationwide tour.

Male lead in the show Andre Lejaune promises many new num-

bers added to the show’s already hit-packed score.

“Come and celebrate 50 years of number one hits,” he says. “With the Reach Out 2015 Tour, the magic of Motown is truly coming to town.”

The show takes place on Saturday, February 14, from 8pm at The Capi-tol Horsham. Tickets are available from the Box offi ce on 01403 750220 or at www.thecapitolhorsham.com.

18 year old Romina Hytten, landed the part in the locally produced feature fi lm, A Dark Refl ection when she was just 16. She stars alongside Georgina Sutcliff e, Rita Ramnani and Marina Sirtis in the supporting role of Molly Adamson.

A Dark Refl ection premieres at The Capitol Theatre, Horsham on Thursday, February 26, 2015. It tells the story of a disturbing con-spiracy at the heart of the aviation industry. Billed as ‘Erin Brockovich’ meets ‘All the Presidents Men’, the fact-based fi lm is based on direc-tor Tristan Loraine’s research as an Airline Captain. Research, that last week saw him awarded one of the fi rst ever 26 British Citizen Awards (BCA), for his 14 year’s work on the issues raised in this fi lm.

The fi lm was made by Sussex-based production company Fact Not Fiction Films and in terms of produc-tion value, is said to be Britain’s big-gest co-operative fi lm project to date.

Filming took place in Horsham and around Sussex as well as in Jordan. Romina got her big break by chance, when she met Direc-tor, Tristan Loraine, at a Farlington Careers Fair. Little did she know, when she impressed Tristan with her acting ambitions, that her fi rst fi lm role would take her to such diz-zying heights, literally!

Storrington-based, Romina, won a drama scholarship to Farlington school and is now studying her A levels at Bishop Luff a sixth form. She is part of the Chichester Festival Youth Theatre and a member of the

Goodwood Actors Guild, a company of about 250 actors and performers working annually at the world fa-mous Goodwood Revival Motor Rac-ing event in Sussex. As part of the Chichester Festival Youth Theatre, she has played ‘Lucy’ in “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe”, and recently led a full cast of puppies on stage, as ‘Missis Pongo’ in “The One Hundred and One Dalmations”.

About her role in the fi lm, Romina said: “It was amazing to go through the whole process of professional fi lm-making for the fi rst time. I learnt so much and it has really in-spired me to work even harder to pursue my career in acting. My next goal is to audition and hopefully gain entry to one of the top drama schools.”

In her role as Molly, the airline captain’s daughter, she was fi lmed at the Southdown Gliding Club. Molly, already a trainee glider pilot, gets an aerobatic glider fl ight cov-ered by the local paper. Molly’s pilot father comes along and meets the local journalist for the fi rst time: a pivotal turning point in the fi lm. Although Romina had never been in a glider before, she smiled her way through 22 consecutive loops and countless rolls with an experienced pilot, Guy Westgate, at the Stor-rington Club.

Director/Producer Tristan Loraine said, “Romina was better than per-fect for the part, she is so gifted and brave. Romina is one of the fi nest young actresses in the country.”

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, love is in the air for many. If you fi nd yourself single this year and want to fi nd that special someone, how will you go about wooing them?

Chat up lines can be fun but they can also be cheesy and awkward. Here is a list of 10 cheesy lines and it is up to you if you use them or not.1. Is it hot in here or is it just

you?2. Are you tired? It’s just

you’ve been running through my mind all day

3. Get your coat, you’ve pulled

4. If I could rearrange the al-phabet, I’d put U and I to-gether

5. Did it hurt when you fell from heaven?

6. Do you believe in love at fi rst sight or shall I walk past again?

7. Do you like raisins? How about a date?

8. Feel my shirt, that’s boy-friend material

9. I can work out the square root of any number in 10 seconds. Give me yours and I’ll prove it

10. I have lost my phone number, can I borrow yours?

Will you be using any of these cheesy chat up lines this Valentine’s Day?

South East people will be relieved to learn that almost three quar-ters (81%) of locals would choose a romantic gesture over an expen-sive gift this Valentine’s Day – a study from British Heart Founda-tion (BHF) shops revealed as they launch their annual Love Notes campaign.

In fact, local South East people are so keen on romantic gestures that 20% think a love letter or breakfast in bed (21%) is the most romantic thing a partner could do for them.

South East BHF shops provide the perfect way to romance that special someone this Valentine’s Day by writing a heartfelt Love Note and displaying it in South East BHF shop windows until Valentine’s Day on February 14, as part of Heart Month. Just pop into your local BHF shop with a minimum £1 donation and write a note. Every penny of profi t raised goes on to fund lifesaving research into the fi ght for every heartbeat.

Debbie Dixon, Regional Manager for the BHF, said: “It’s interesting to see that 81% of local South West people prefer romantic gestures over expensive gifts.

“Writing a Love Note for Heart Month and displaying in South East shop windows is one of the easiest ways to express your love for that special someone or something you love whilst the donation of £1 will help the BHF fund lifesaving re-search into heart disease.”

This year celebrities such as Caroline Flack, Carol Smillie, Eliza Doolittle, Mollie King, Tina Hob-ley, Esther Ranzten, Gemma Merna, Aggie Mackenzie, Oliver Proudlock and Kate Thornton are supporting the campaign by writing their own special message on a Love Note.

Call 0844 412 5000 or visit bhf.org.uk/shops to locate your local shop.

Friday 6 February 2015 23

Professional poet and member of the UK Poetry Society, Julia Bird, is working with Interfl ora, the world’s largest fl oristry network, on a new campaign encourag-ing people to put their romantic thoughts into words this Valen-tine’s Day. According to research*, this is something more than half the nation struggles with, and to-gether, they want to change this.

Eight tips to crafting the perfect verse

1. Read fi rst, then write. Poets have wooed their lovers in verse for centuries, poetry is a continuous conversation that you can join. Read a few of the best love po-ets for inspiration, and see what classic works you can adapt or imitate for your own romantic purposes.

2. Alternatively, you could always quote someone else’s poem on your fl ower card - www.poet-ryarchive.org (UK) and www.po-etryfoundation.org (USA) contain thousands of poems celebrating every sort of idea and experience, and you can search by keywords to fi nd something par-ticularly meaningful to you and your lover.

3. R e m e m b e r , s p e c i f i c -ity is key. If you’re going to write a p o e m a b o u t your part-ner, don’t try and en-compass the whole sweep of your rela-tionship - focus on the particular de-tail: the weather on day you met, the charming asym-metry of her freckles, the way he cooks shepherd’s pie. There’s nothing so disarming as the knowledge that you are deeply known and remembered by an-other.

4. Equally exciting, however, is mystery. Perhaps you’re send-ing your fl owers anonymously. In that case, concentrate on de-scribing your own feelings – are you yearning or burning, sigh-ing or lying? The person on the receiving end of the dozen star-gazers will be dizzy with curios-ity about who they’ve inspired to such levels of emotion.

5. Love poetry is driven by rhythm, the pattern of words that makes readers think of heart beats or dance steps. Are you going to fi t lots of multisyllabic Latinate words into your lines for a deli-cate and precise sound; or will you go for the pounding rhythms of shorter Anglo-Saxon words? A

rose is the same thing as a Rosa berberifolia – but which one is more like your particular crush?

6. If you’re using rhyme, look be-yond the obvious full rhymes (love/dove, heart/apart, moon/June) that have been used many times before. Part rhymes (love/save, heart/hurt, moon/mine) are less predictable, therefore more intriguing.

7. Leave behind the language of the past. Some poetic phrases are woven so deeply into our culture (‘Shall I compare thee to a sum-mer’s day’/‘What light through yonder window breaks’) that we reach instinctively for the archaic poem-sounding words to add gravitas to our writing. Let go of ‘thee’ and ‘yonder’, and instead fi nd the poetry in the fads and fashions of today’s dictionaries.

8. Your innate creativity. Your rela-tionship, fuelled by its particular mix of emotion, memory, desire, laughter and regret. The pas-sion that you have for her, the lust that you have for him. Find a place for it all in your writing. Let your poem bloom.

The formula for creating the perfect romantic verse

Julia Bird, Inter-fl ora’s poetry

expert, has also analysed the nation’s favourite 10 love poems to develop a ‘formu-la’ for the perfect ro-

mantic verse. According to

Julia, it is as simple as: x (p + b

+ c + o).

The formula, explained:P = Pattern. All ten of the nation’s favourite love poems are boldly metrical and have strong rhyming patterns. Rhythm is important to the love poet – it puts the reader in mind of heartbeats and dance steps. A rhyming couplet asserts a truth like no other fi gure of speech. Pep-per your poems with pattern.B = Brevity. Many of the poems on the lists are sonnets – from Shake-speare’s ‘Let me not to the marriage of true minds’ to Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s ‘How do I love thee? Let me count the ways’. Your fl ower card provides even less space than the 14 lines of a sonnet, so you’ll want to make your point in a very few words – those words that your lover can recite by heart for the rest their life.C = Comparison. ‘Shall I com-pare thee to a summer’s day’ asks Shakespeare, and Robert Burns answers ‘O my Luve’s like a red, red rose’. The desire to compare and describe the love is a common

thread through love poetry. What’s your love like? Why, s/he’s like this...O = Obstacle. ‘The course of true love never did run smooth’ says Lysander in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Many of the nation’s fa-vourite love poems examine the difficulties inherent in a love af-fair, from Yeats’ poverty in ‘He Wishes for the Cloths of Heaven’

to Andrew Marvell lacking world enough and time in ‘To His Coy Mistress’ to Christina Rossetti’s imminent death in ‘Remember’. What obstacle will you overcome in order to impress your soul-mate?X = Mystery Quality. Finally, mul-tiply all these necessary ingredients of a love poem by the passion, crea-tivity and detail that only you can

provide when you’re contemplating your particular best beloved. X also symbolises a kiss, and you’ll want to fi nish your message with any amount of those.’A wealth of further information, including a guide to romantic eti-quette and an eBook of romantic verses to inspire you are available at www.interfl ora.co.uk/roman-tic-verse.

A central staircase separates what is otherwise an open plan space with a generous

Chalet bungalow for sale in Horsham

Never underestimate the power of the internet when selling a property, says local estate agen-cy Fox & Sons in Horsham.

Having your property featured on the most popular and pow-erful property search websites is key to selling your property; especially given that 95% of all home movers start their property search online (YouGov, January 2014).

Michael Taylor, branch manag-er at Fox & Sons said: “We under-stand that the best on-line expo-sure for your property gives us the greatest chance of achieving the best possible price.

“We advise sellers to look at which web portals estate agents will present their property on and instruct an agency that can put their property in front of the most potential buyers.”

Research shows that the two dominant property search portals are Rightmove and Zoopla* and unless properties are featured on both of these websites then sell-ers could be missing out on ex-posing their properties to a third of buyers looking online. Los-ing a third of your potential buy-ers could have the potential of not maximising the value of your property and therefore sellers

should strongly consider using an estate agent that uses both of the two dominant property portals. Fox & Sons places properties on both of these key sites as well as its own website.

If you have a property to sell and would like to arrange a free mar-ket appraisal on your home, con-tact the local Fox & Sons branch on 01403 217417 or email: [email protected].

Nineteen gymnasts from Horsham Gymnastics Centre travelled to Camberley last Sunday, February 1, to take part in a Sports Acrobatics Invitational Competition.

Dom and Amelia repeated their success from earlier this year that they achieved at the Regional Championships by again winning the Gold Medals in the Grade 2 mixed pairs.

Dean and India, in their first com-petition together, took the bronze medal in the Grade 2 mixed pairs.

Also in the medals were Devon

and Nina who produced a stunning routine to finish in silver medal po-sition in the Grade 3 Mixed Pairs, and Jake and Theo, also taking part in their first competition together were placed second in the Grade 2 Men’s Pairs winning their silver medals.

To round off another successful competition for Horsham Gymnas-tics Centre two Grade 2 women’s groups consisting of Summer, Rhi-annon and Clementine and Elise, Annabelle and Holly finished in 6th and 7th places respectively. Finally, Tilly, Abbey and Olivia finished in 5th place in the Grade 3 women’s groups and Isabella and Alexis fin-

ished in 8th position in the Grade 3 Women’s Pairs.

One of the Horsham Sports Acro Coaches, Lauren Chapman, said “I’m very proud of everyone who competed at this tough competi-tion. The results are a great re-flection of how hard all the gym-nasts have worked over the recent months”

At this year’s AGM the General Manager, Matthew Hazelden, out-lined the investments, improve-ments and changes planned for the course for 2015 in which the club will be celebrating 40 years as a golf club. The planned changed layout of the course, due to be made in June, to one 18 hole course (Griffin) and one 9 hole course (Phoenix) will en-able both courses to be maintained to the excellent standard now being experienced on the Griffin.

The new committee for 2015 was confirmed including the new captain Alan Rengger and a num-ber of trophies were awarded. The

highlight being the Annual Order of Merit, for the most competition points over the year which went to Mick Brown who received the tro-phy from outgoing captain, Barrie Clinton. The meeting was followed by the captains’ pitch out / pitch in competition and the Captains lunch.

Horsham move up to third with a game in hand, swapping places with Trojans after beating the im-pressive Southampton side in a crucial top of the table clash for the second time this season.

Initially both sides battled to assert supremacy with Horsham earning more possession. Player absences necessitated a revised line up and with the defence hold-ing firm the midfielders maintained control before, as looked inevitable, attacking forays gave Horsham the lead, Matt Hough converting two short corners to take his seasonal tally to a dozen goals.

After the break Trojans were awarded a corner amid protesta-tions and reduced the deficit, until

Horsham player coach Dom Male pinpointed a long pass to enable Rob Turnbull to supply Jack Dean from the side of the opposition D, Jack obliging with his tenth of this campaign, providing a 3-1 advan-tage. Although Trojans posted a late consolation Horsham’s victory was never in doubt, Team Manager Al Campbell describing their perfor-mance as the most measured and composed of the season.

The league’s relentless chal-lenge continues tomorrow (Satur-day) when runaway leaders Henley come to Broadbridge Heath for an 11.30 start, with Horsham looking to continue their push for promo-tion by avenging their earlier de-feat in Oxfordshire, Al Campbell predicting: “It could be the game of the season!” After competing in the national indoor competition in Nottingham, eighth placed Hor-sham Ladies return to league action with an away trip to Maidenhead (6th), whom they beat 3-2 at home in September.

Chesworth Rovers U11 2 - 2 Horsham Ambassadors U11

The second round of the Her-on way Cup was played on a snow bound Chesworth pitch, the lines swept clear and a bright yellow ball were a must to ensure the match went ahead.

Ambassadors started well and came at Chesworth from the whis-tle, Leo in the Chesworth goal keep-ing his team in the game as Ambas-sadors launched wave after wave of attacks.

Zack and Zander in the Chesworth defence backed up keeper Leo su-perbly allowing the score to remain at 0-0 at the half time whistle.

The second half continued with Ambassadors still on the front foot

and when a needless free kick was awarded to Ambassadors the visi-tors midfielder Tom curled it into net to give them the lead. The lead was doubled when Ollie burst through the Chesworth back line and looped his shot over Leo’s out-stretched finger tips for 2-0.

The two goal deficit somehow woke Chesworth up and they quick-ly pulled a goal back from an acro-batic volley by Finlay from a cross from Seb. Nyle then sealed the draw in the dying minutes with a shot over the Ambassadors keeper fol-lowing a great run down the left wing to make the final score 2 - 2.

The second match saw Seb score for a second week on the trot for a 1 - 0 victory.Horsham Sparrows

Under 12 – The U12 team pro-gressed to the semi final of the Plate Competition with a convincing 5-0

away win at St Paul’s Panthers. Three goals from Man of the Match Luke P and one a piece from Jack D and Teddy G secured the win.

Under 13 – Last Saturday the Sparrows Under 13 team played Partridge Green on a difficult pitch in a Division A bottom of the table clash. Partridge Green ran out 4 - 1 winners but the score did not reflect totally the play and Sparrows were unfortunate not to make the score a lot closer. Oliver S scored a consola-tion goal and Nathan S was Man of the Match for his fully committed performance.

Under 14 – The plate semi final was settled in the first half as the Sparrows U14 team went 3-0 behind to a strong Lower Beeding side. A dogged second half performance from 10 man Sparrows denied any more goals with Jacob M getting man of the match.

Under 15 – Two goals from Stey-ning were enough to secure the points against the U15 Sparrows.

Saturday January 31 - Sussex County League Div 1Loxwood 1 – 0 Horsham YMCA

FootballTom Norris – Football Reporter

A Mark Cave penalty sixteen min-utes from time earned Loxwood the local bragging rights for the second time this season, as they completed the league double over YM with 1-0 win at Plaistow Road last Saturday.

Just a single goal separated the two sides this time around, as Peter Buckland’s YM sought to avenge the embarrassing 7-0 home defeat suf-fered in the reverse fi xture at Gor-ings Mead in September.

Neither goalkeeper was truly tested during a tight and often frag-mented aff air played on a progres-sively diffi cult surface, as both sides struggled to create many clear cut opportunities on goal.

Despite a dominant second half showing from YM, the three points were in the end decided when visi-tors’ midfi elder Luke Gedling clum-

sily tripped Loxwood substitute Mi-chael Wood in the penalty area, and fellow sub Mark Cave coolly con-verted the resulting spot kick.

The defeat sees Loxwood leap above YM in the table, with Buck-land’s side slipping to eleventh in the Division 1 standings and with-out a win in 2015.

The YM boss commented: “I think the game just refl ected the way our season has gone. I can be disap-pointed but I can’t be upset because the players put in a good shift and we were the best team. Sometimes the best team doesn’t win a game of football. I could not see them scor-

ing without the penalty. The worst we should have come away from here with today was a 0-0.

“I was very pleased with our re-sponse after recent results. I was pleased with the performance, but where we go from here, I don’t know. We’ve got four good games coming up now where I’d like to think we could come up with four victories and take some respect-ability out of the season.”

YM Team: Lockwood, Carden, Gathern, O’Carroll, Evans, Dugdale, Gedling, D. Sullivan (M. Smith 75), Hibbert, J. Brown (T. Smith 69), N. Sullivan. Unused Subs: Hyett.

Saturday January 31 - Sussex County League Div 1Broadbidge Heath 5 - 0 Selsey

FootballDave Smith – Sports Editor

After the snow and ice had melted, the original reason for this game to be in doubt, the resulting wa-terlogged pitch again placed a question mark on it going ahead before the referee decided late on that the conditions were playable.

Heath were quick out of the blocks, Ollie Moore heading home a Merv Bhujun far post cross, in what was their fi rst attack on the 3 min-ute mark.

Bhujun and Tiago Andrade both came close to adding a second but

Heath and Andrade did not have long to wait for a goal as on 18 min-utes a Piers McDermott shot from the edge of the penalty area hit Ti-ago Andrade who turned and ham-mered the loose ball into the roof of the net.

Heath extended their lead before the break when Ollie Moore side-stepped a challenge before smash-ing a right foot shot past the Selsey keeper to make it 3-0.

Heath added a fourth midway through the second half, Andrade was fouled just outside the area, Moore’s free-kick was blocked by the wall but the ball fell kindly to Bevan who smashed a left foot shot through a crowded area into the net. Moore completed his fi rst ever sen-ior hat-trick with Heath’s fi fth goal 20 minutes before the end, hav-

ing jinked his way into the penalty area the Heath midfi eld player was clumsily brought down but got up to score from the resulting penalty to bring his season’s tally to 17 goals.

Another fi ve goal thriller for Heath, the third time in the last four matches the side has scored fi ve. Heath Manager Steve Painter said he told his players after the game that their target for the season has now been revised, the original aim at the start of the season was to maintain Division One status, but with 14 games still to play that has now been changed to a top 10 fi nish. A delighted Painter said “Consider-ing that just three years ago we were playing Intermediate football in Di-vision 3 this is an amazing rise”.

Heath Team: M Chester, Alfi eri, Bevan, Carruthers, Attwater (Flack 52), Waddingham, Moore, McDer-mott, Andrade, Legrange (Robinson 65), Bhujun (McNab 70).

Tuesday February 3 – Ryman League Division One SouthHorsham 2 – 2 Tooting & Mit-cham

Following the disastrous home defeat to fellow relegation candidates Re-dhill this was an improve-ment against a far better

side than the team who had won so convincingly at Gorings Mead three days earlier, but then again it needed to be.

Tooting & Mitcham sit comfort-

ably in the mid table and perhaps the lack of urgency that is generated from not being in relegation or pro-motion fi ghts should have meant that this was three points that the Hornets should have claimed. How-ever some very strange refereeing decisions went against Horsham in this match at a time they need all the luck and good judgement they can get.

Another new face made it into the starting line-up, 33 year old Irish defender Richie Byrne has previ-ously played in the Scottish FA Cup fi nal for Dunfermline Athletic and in the UEFA Cup for Shamrock Rov-ers and Aberdeen before now join-ing a relegation battle at Gorings Mead with Horsham.

Saturday January 31 - Ryman League Division One SouthHorsham 0 – 4 Redhill

FootballDave Smith – Sports Editor

After the recent upsurge in fortunes for the Hornets since Storey and Cant took over team matters and brought in an in-fl ux of new players this match against fellow relegation can-didates Redhill would have car-ried short odds on a home win before kickoff .

However old bad habits re-turned and inexplicably the de-fence reverted to its error strewn ways amid a woe-ful team display in the second half that resulted in a heavy and damaging home defeat.

If this is a one-off then this de-feat may not be fatal to Horsham’s chances of staying in the division, if howev-er it dents the confi dence and brings about the return of the abysmal performances seen prior to the management duo’s arrival then it could kill off any chances of ‘The Great Escape’.

The fi rst half, although goal-less, contained chances for both sides and considering the very heavy pitch it was played at a high tempo. The fi rst chance fell to the visitors with Tyrone Pink shooting straight at Gareth Wil-liams, followed soon after by a chance for Trevor McCreadie who wasted it after failing to control the ball when in front of the Re-dhill goal.

Pink and McCreadie again missed good opportunities for both sides and Williams had to be alert in the Horsham goal to deny Connor French but the fi rst half whistle saw the teams at goalless deadlock with little sign of the calamity that the second half would bring.

Whatever was said at half time

in the home changing room wants ripping up and never ut-tering again because Horsham simply failed to turn up and never put in any sort of a perfor-mance in the second forty fi ve minutes.

It took just eight minutes for Redhill to take the lead when an unchallenged Tyrone Pink head-ed in off the post. Nine minutes later it was 2-0 after an error by Richie Welsh let in Redhill cap-tain Jon Diff ord who slotted the ball between Williams’ legs and into the net.

George Branford and Saul Oto-bo came on for Bailo Camara and new signing Joe Obersteller in

an attempt to jerk some life into the Horsham

team. The chances of Horsham claw-ing their way back into it were look-ing bleak as they continued to be wasteful upfront

with McCreadie, who in previous

weeks had looked very sharp, being the main

culprit. The game was over as a con-

test in the eighty second minute when a Jack Hope error allowed substitute Alex Teniola clear to shoot past Williams into the bot-tom corner.

Redhill completed the humili-ating defeat with three minutes remaining when the now shell shocked Horsham defence gifted time and space to Leonard Maz-zone who made no mistake for number four. There was still time for Tom Hughes to get a second yellow card leaving the Hornets with ten men at the fi nal whistle and completing a miserable day.

With the visit of Tooting & Mitcham on Tuesday the oppor-tunity comes quickly to show if this result was a one-off blip in the revival or not because Hor-sham cannot aff ord another de-feat of this nature if the Storey and Cant ‘Great Escape’ is to be-come a reality.

tors Horsham had two gilt edged chances. After a good run from Mc-Creadie, Tony Nwachukwu blasted over before the best chance of the half fell to Richie Welch who wast-ed the opportunity when he should have given his side the lead. The main talking point of the half was when somehow the referee denied the Hornets a blatant penalty af-ter Tom Hughes was clearly fouled well inside the area. The referee, who was only a few yards from the incident, inexplicably adjudged it to be outside the area and gave a free kick.

In the second half Tooting con-tinued to have more of the play with one eff ort crashing off the bar with Gareth Williams beaten, but it was Horsham who took the lead. A Tom Vickers free kick was superbly met by Bailo Camara whose header

gave visiting keeper Luke Badiali no chance and registered Camara’s fi rst goal for the club.

Then in a reverse of his poor de-cision of the fi rst half the referee decided that a foul against Horsham was inside the area when it was ap-parent to all it was well outside. Tooting’s Frankie Sawyer gratefully stepped up to accept the referee’s gift of the penalty kick which he fi red past Williams for the equaliser.

Despite increased pressure from the visitors Horsham kept going and were rewarded for their en-deavours when they regained the lead through Nwachukwu on sev-enty nine minutes.

However the turning point came nine minutes later when Nwachukwu collected his second yellow card leav-ing the Hornets to play the last two minutes of normal time and the sev-

en minutes of added time the referee somehow had deemed warranted.

The visitors laid siege to the Hor-sham goal and inevitably fi ve min-utes into the seven added Tooting & Mitcham’s Stefan Cox grabbed his team’s second equaliser of the night leaving the fi nal score at two each, which on balance of play was probably a fair result.

As the games come thick and fast another mid table side, Chip-stead, visit Gorings Mead this weekend (Saturday February 7). With one point from a possible six from the last two games Anthony Storey will be looking to get an-other winning run going as soon as possible.

Saturday January 31 - London 3 South East LeagueLewes 3 - 40 Horsham

A young Horsham side, playing fi ve teenagers, secured a comfortable 40-3 away win at Lewes.

They found their hosts a tougher proposition than when they last met in October, having been strengthened by several play-ers joining from Sussex University.

Dartfordians, Horsham’s clos-est challengers, surprisingly lost at home to Old Dunstonians, and Hor-sham’s lead at the top of the table has now extended to eight points.

Horsham had six enforced chang-es from their last game due to injury

and unavailability, and when expe-rienced Number 8, Richard Tredgett left the fi eld after 7 minutes with an ankle injury, the Green and Whites had to dig deep into their resources.

Johnny Ordidge was forced to move into the pack, before later leaving the fi eld injured, thus dis-rupting the settled three quarter line which has been one the foun-dations of Horsham’s success over recent months, but this only served to show the quality of the young former Colt’s players coming to the fore. Kyle Fairs, Liam Brady, Joe Emson, Kyle Fuller and Declan Nwachukwu demonstrated that the future of Horsham rugby is in safe hands for years to come.

Top scorer Jamie Gibbs moved into the centre and notched his fi rst try since December running a great line off Tom Johnson to score un-

der the posts on 15 minutes, which Johnson converted. Lewes then pegged Horsham back with a pen-alty from Jon Pitts.

Horsham extended their lead when Sean Tuhakaraina burst through the middle to score on 26 minutes later followed by a fi ne show and go from scrum half Josh Mills who scored his fi rst try for Horsham 1st XV.

On the stroke of half time the Green and Whites secured their four try bonus point with a fi ne length of the fi eld try. Johnson launched a counter attack from his own try line and the ball was spun wide to Fuller who rounded his man and as the cover defence closed him down he put in a long kick that Gibbs won the race to touch down and score his second. All four fi rst half tries were converted by Johnson and Horsham

went into the break leading 28-3.The gloss was put on Horsham’s

victory with a fi ne counter attack leading to London & South East Un-der 18 triallist, Nwachukwu, out-pacing the defence to score a long distance try on his fi rst team debut and then Joe Green grounded the ball following powerful scrum, con-verted by Johnson, to seal the win.

Horsham coach Nick Stocker was happy after the game. “We had a lot of changes due to injuries, but the rest will give them a chance to recov-er for the diffi cult matches ahead.

I am delighted that we scored 40 points in diffi cult conditions against a young fi t side having made fi ve changes in the pack since we last played.

Following the disruption I was very happy with the way Matt Stone and Giles Barber in the forwards,

and Sean Tuhakaraina in the backs, stepped up into leadership roles during the game using their expe-rience. My choice for man of the match goes to Declan Nwachukwu. It is not often that players have the ability to step up from the Colts. He always looked to get involved and scored a very good try.”

Horsham’s next game is at home to Heathfi eld & Waldron tomorrow at 2:30pm (February 7), who them-selves are in a rich vein of form be-ing on an eight match unbeaten run stretching back to mid November. The match is a double header be-ing also the Bob Rogers Sussex Cup semi-fi nal.

Horsham Team: Bell, Gibbs, Or-didge (Rush 40), Tuhakaraina, Nwa-chukwu; Johnson, Mills; Brady (Fairs 40), Stone, Barber; Green, Emson; Price, Smith, Tredgett (Fuller 7).

Future looks good for table topping Horsham

Saturday January 31 - London 3 South East LeagueBromley 24 - 10 Pulborough

Returning to league action inju-ry hit Pulborough, without a win since December 6, were undone by a strong Bromley side after start-ing disappointingly in testing con-ditions.

Early in the season Borough pushed the third in the table Kent team close and had the chance to beat them only to be narrowly de-feated. But the replay was a diff er-ent story. The hosts were 24 nil up at the break yet Borough came back

well in the second half with two tries, the fi rst from Jack Ledra, both conversions going wide – one from too acute an angle and the other taken away in the gale.

After Bromley were prevented from adding to their score, full back Frazer Oliphant-Hope told the Dis-trict Post: “We let ourselves down in the fi rst half, especially in the opening 20 minutes – it was very cold and our tackling was a bit off . We recovered strongly in the second half but handling errors made it dif-fi cult for us”.

Team Manager Roger Hunt added: “We were short in the front row and that made a big diff erence.” Bor-ough remaining eighth, their lead over Park House reduced to fi ve points, return home to entertain sixth in the table Folkestone tomor-row (Saturday), against whom they lost in Kent earlier in the season.

In a game where the score did not fully refl ect the balance of play Brighton scored seven penalties and converted four where Horsh-am only managed a solitary pen-alty kick.

The superior Brighton side raced into a 17 – 0 lead but Horsham kept battling and had by far the better of the play after an intentional knock-on resulted in a sin bin which re-duced Brighton to 14.

However in the second half Hor-sham lost a bit of concentration and Brighton stepped up their game and ran out 43 – 3 winners. For the Green and Whites, hooker Tom Hamblet put in a formidable man of the match performance but the op-position proved too strong.

Brighton have a squad over twice

the size of Horsham’s with many of their players playing with the Har-lequins so along with second placed Worthing they are the strongest team in the division which leaves Horsham to battle with Pulborough

and Jersey for what would be a very credible third spot.

The other Horsham junior team in action on Sunday, the Under 15 side, had a comfortable 50 – 0 home win over Lewes.
