Scout parade marks St George’s Day in Horsham
Horsham Scouts paraded through Horsham Town Centre on April 26 to celebrate St. George’s Day.
The annual parade which took place between 2.30pm and 4pm and marked the first event in which the newly formed Scout District came together.
St. George is the Patron Saint of the Scouts, so the Sunday nearest to St. George's Day has become an an-nual occasion for the Scouts to hold ceremonies when they reaffirm their Promise and acknowledge the Scout Law in a national act of dedication. Scouting groups across the Horsham district, together with a contingent from Horsham guides.
The parade began near the sta-tion and followed a route down North Street to the Carfax. There was an open air celebration around the Bandstand which included the annual renewal of the Scout Promise by all members.
The British Legion band led the marching and there was a collection for Macmillan Sussex Project and the Marfan Trust, the 2015 nominated charities.

Could you save a life in your local community?
Horsham Community Responders, which is an established Ambulance Service Community Responder Scheme and Sainsbury Horsham’s Charity of the year, is looking to recruit two new team members.
The Horsham Team which has been established just over 8 years ago and has recently been com-mended by the Ambulance Service for responding to over 5000 calls within that time.
Community First Responders (CFRs) use life-saving skills and equipment to provide early and of-ten vital intervention for patients suffering life-threatening emer-gencies in the immediate vicinity of where they live or work.
CFR’s are trained by the Ambu-lance Service to respond to calls within their local community, where they are able to attend the scene of an emergency in a very short time - often within the first few minutes, and are often the first on scene.
CFR’s carry a vast array of equip-ment ranging from an advanced first aid kit, Oxygen, some basic drugs and a defibrillator.
Types of calls a Community First Responder might attend are Falls,
Strokes, Choking, Diabetic emer-gencies, Traumatic emergencies (not road traffic collisions), Breathing difficulties, Patients suffering from seizures, Chest Pains, Heart attack, Cardiac arrest and Unconscious pa-tients
Community First Responders an-swer calls in their neighbourhood, therefore, the potential for them to arrive on scene before an ambu-lance, especially in rural areas, is vital in providing immediate life-saving treatment. These extra min-utes do help to save lives.
If this is something that you may be interested in being involved with, are prepared to commit to a rota to be available to respond at a minutes’ notice for a minimum of 8 hours a week, attend monthly training ses-sions and help fundraise then please contact us by e-mail at [email protected] to express an interest or alternatively come to our open evening which is being held at The College of Richard Col-lyer on Thursday, May 7, starting at 8pm.

Polar protest at Gatwick AirportSally Pavey - Communities Against Gatwick Noise Emissions (CAGNE)
The issue of climate change was brought to Gatwick Airport in the form of dancing polar bears.
The protest was peaceful and raised the issue of what building a new runway at Gatwick would mean to the world.
A new runway in the southeast would breach climate change tar-gets and the polar bears symbolised what aviation is party to.
Helped by concerned residents from Kent, Sussex and Surrey, the bears found those at Gatwick sym-pathetic with the world’s plight if Gatwick is allowed to expand let alone what it will do to local rural communities.
GACC, Gatwick Areas Conserva-tion Campaign, members undertook research into how local parliamen-tary candidates views on building a second runway at Gatwick and found all eleven Conservative Parliamen-tary candidates in the seats around Gatwick oppose a second runway as do all Green Party and UKIP candi-dates.
Almost all Lib Dem candidates oppose a new runway, the odd ones
out being the candidates for Crawley and Horsham. The Labour candi-dates are about equally divided, half for and half against.
GACC asked candidates to sign a pledge to oppose a new runway due to increase in aircraft noise, wors-ened environment and lack of infra-structure such as roads, rail, schools and hospitals.
The CEO of Gatwick Airport, Stew-art Wingate announced in the me-dia that they would be stepping up its expansion campaign from next week, delivering expensive leaflets to 400,000 homes in west London, Surrey and Berkshire.
Sally Pavey, Chair of CAGNE said: “This is a costly exercise but simply illustrates that Gatwick can’t find support in the surrounding counties and so have to try persuade Heath-row residents to become ‘nimbys’ and support putting the same mis-ery of Heathrow here in West Sussex countryside.”
The elections are a very important time and expansion at Gatwick is not just about a new runway as it will have a huge impact on West Sussex,
not only from the 5 new routes over West Sussex but from the huge in-flux of workers.
This country has a huge defi-cit and as Gatwick brings the least into the UK economy as it deals in low cost airlines with 85% of pas-sengers travelling for leisure out of the UK, you have to ask the taxpayer who will pay for the infrastructure to support an airport larger than Heathrow? The answer is simply, us the taxpayer as the money coming in simply will not cover the cost of the infrastructure that will be de-manded.
WSCC and Surrey County Coun-cil are at present undertaking work to analyse the extent of the current deficit in infrastructure costs and what it will be with a second runway.
Gatwick is not supported by their number one customer EasyJet, nor British Airways or Virgin; the In-stitute for Business say that 61% of members oppose Gatwick ex-pansion, only 25% of London First members support Gatwick, and 12 local authorities see the expansion as a major infrastructure issue.

Gallipoli and Horsham– 100 years on
Certain events occur that puncture the general act of remembrance of those who died and those who survived the horrors of WWI one hundred years ago, the Gallipoli campaign is one such event.
In amongst the hustle and bustle of today’s events remembering Gal-lipoli puts things in to sharp relief; what follows below are accounts of the confl ict drawn from the local press and a list of men from Hor-sham drawn up by Gary Cooper.
This act of remembering does not belittle all those who died or sur-vived the First World War whose campaigns have not been so promi-nently remembered. Whilst next week will see the celebration of VE Day, the following is a reminder of what was happening to Horsham folk during one of the most signifi -cant campaigns of the war that had a major impact on three countries, Turkey, Australia and New Zeeland, whilst in Horsham individual fami-lies were aff ected as fathers, hus-bands and sons were lost.
The following are edited, the full versions can be found in Horsham on the Front Line, where you can fi nd many more such letters.
Writing on April 20th to Miss Rowe, of Chestnut Lodge, Hor-sham, J. Smart, on board the Tri-umph, says:
We are just landing our troops, who, we hope, will present the compliments of King George and his subjects to the Sultan at Con-stantinople along with the Navy… It is a beautiful morning, it seems too much so to be stained with the carnage of warfare, but it has to be so. You hear a bang, boom, boom, and know that a few more shrap-nel are on their way to the enemy, covering our troops ashore, then you can see them burst in the air, sending further still their load of bullets.
My wife writes and tells me that
recruits are hard to get. I should like some of the men at home to just see one of the wounded; the sight of the blood is enough to get one’s own blood to boiling point, and wish to get at the enemy. I feel myself despondent at times. Tell the young men that they are cowards to hang back without a cause, when there are men like myself (*over 40) who volun-teered at the commencement of the war,…The King tells us that this is a very great prize for which we are fi ghting, and I suppose it is. My word to the young men of Horsham is: “Roll up, and enlist, help Lord Kitchener and Winston Churchill, and gain the respect of your townspeople.”
Horsham man’s interesting letter
5 June 1915
The following extracts are from a letter sent home by Surgeon P. Boyd Wallis, R.N., a son of the late Mr. H. B. Wallis, of Graylands, Hor-sham.
“I will just tell you all my expe-rience sup to date, which at times have been quite exciting. I will start on April 25th, the day operations commenced. At 3.30 pm. we got up anchor and proceeded to entrance of ____. The Fleet had already ar-rived there, and at 5 am they com-menced to bombard. You never saw such a sight or heard such a terrifi c noise. Shells were bursting all over the place, and with glasses I watched some forts and town above, bricks and earth were sent hundreds of feet into the air, and in short time forts and town ceased to exist.
We then watched operations, landing of troops, &c, which was wonderful, under terrifi c fi re all the time, and you can’t imagine the dif-fi culties they had, barbed wire, &c. Anyhow, they did it, and if you saw the place you would think landing an impossibility.
I watched our chaps taking a hill-side. It was fi ne. They charged for
all they were worth, and as they came along you could see the en-emy jumping out of their trenches and doing a bunk. I was quite sorry we had to go. …During day, enemy on opposite side began to get active, and I must say did some excellent shooting from a long range and also caused our troops a lot of trouble on the other side, but the ships got to work and silenced them…Have good hold on land now. 28th Had to go around to various ships hunting for food, got some bread which we have been without for three days, and fresh meat. In afternoon on beach we noticed several French wounded some way up and apparently no one to attend to them. We got leave to assist. I went on board a trawler and went ashore. They were absolutely unattended. I took a lot of stuff with me, fi xed them off , and got them off to our ship and then to hospital ship. During day took 110 off .

Horsham police donate £250 to Southwater Youth Project
Horsham Police has donated £250 to Southwater Youth Project to fund new activities, buy new com-puter games and some inflatable sumo wrestling suits to be used at the youth club.
The donation comes from the Po-lice Property Act Fund (PPAF), made up of monies received by the police from property confiscated by order of the court and then sold.
Police Community Support Of-ficer Damian Cecil said: "I am re-ally pleased that the application for funding from the Police Property Act fund was granted for the Southwa-ter Youth Project. Attempted car theft
Police warn motorists of roadside petrol scamHorsham police is warning mo-torists to remain vigilant follow-ing a recent spate of people be-ing conned into giving money for petrol by suspects pretending to be drivers in need.
The first incident, reported to police on Wednesday, April 22, oc-curred on the A281 in Cowfold at approximately 2:15pm.
A woman from Horsham was flagged down by a man in a lay-by who told her that his car was low on fuel, and he had no money but was trying to get to a meeting in Manchester.
He asked to borrow some money in exchange for a gold-coloured ring and bracelet. The Good Sa-maritan gave the man £65 of his own money and he left her with his business card.
The man was driving a dark-coloured BMW and is described as white, large build, with a beard and moustache, with very short hair and a round face. He was wearing a grey jacket.
There was a further, similar in-cident the same day at Horn Lane, Henfield, where again a man parked in a lay-by flagged down a passing motorist stating that he needed money to get back to Man-chester. The local driver followed the suspect to a near-by pet-rol station where he paid for £50 worth of fuel on his behalf and also gave him £50 in cash. The suspect again gave a gold bracelet and ring as collateral.
At 2:30pm on Sunday, April 26, a Henfield resident was flagged down by a man who had stopped
his vehicle on the side of Wheat-sheaf Road. The man said he could not speak much English and that his bank card was not working. He said his car was nearly out of fuel and that he also needed to buy some food.
The victim said she only had a small amount of cash that she could lend him but he reached into the car and took her purse, removing £120. The man offered the victim a necklace and ring in exchange for the cash.
The suspect is described as being smartly dressed in a grey suit, pos-sibly of Eastern European origin, in his late 30s to early 40s, me-dium build, with very short black hair and was a passenger in a green hatchback car. The victim followed the vehicle to a local petrol station
but it did not stop.PC John Burt, from Horsham
Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "We are urging people to be aware of this scam taking place on our local roads and to warn friends and family. These fraudsters are taking advantage of people's goodwill in exchange for items of gold jewellery that are likely to be fake and are providing victims with bogus business cards."
If you have any information about these men or you have been offered jewellery in exchange for money for petrol please con-tact police by emailing [email protected] or by phoning 101, quoting serial 764 of 27/04. You can also call the independ-ent charity Crimestoppers anony-mously on 0800 555 111.

Horsham is a great place to live and work. My
wife and I have long known the town and it’s
great to be living in its heart.
Aged 46, I have had a career outside politics,
advising companies and serving in HM Treas-
ury. As a charity volunteer I have particularly
focussed on education, homelessness and,
through a credit union, on aff ordable fi nance.
If elected I would do my utmost for Horsham
as a constituency MP. Whoever wins will have
much on which to focus.
Gatwick is a valuable local employer how-
ever I would strenuously oppose a second run-
way, which would place an intolerable strain
on the local infrastructure. Horsham is distant
from too many hospital services – most im-
portantly A&E. There is a compelling case for
improved local health provision – for which I
will campaign – starting with enhancing Hor-
sham Hospital’s facilities.
Aircraft noise, the visibility of Police/PC-
SOs and train services are all areas which will
require a campaigning MP. I am proud of our
Conservative record in Government - espe-
cially on the economy – which enables us to
invest in our NHS, protect pensions and main-
tain a strong defence.
But the particular interests of this constitu-
ency will always need care, attention and de-
livery.
Jeremy Quin
The Conservative Party
Candidate
I am a seasoned and energetic campaigner on the main issues which are eff ecting Horsham people, such as the lack of aff ordable sus-tainable housing, the government’s austerity measures, and fracking.I have previously stood as a borough council candidate in Crawley, county council candidate in Surrey, and as a county council candidate in a Horsham by-election.
I believe I am the right advocate for the peo-ple of Horsham because of my political and campaigning experience, and my career as a qualifi ed Social Worker. I currently work as an Assistant Care Manager for West Sussex County Council in Horsham. As your MP I will endeavour to work for the common good of all by:- Defending all public services from unnec-essary and arbitrary cuts.- Defending green spaces and the wider countryside from unnecessary development by proposing brownfi eld alternatives.- Defending people’s rights in the rented housing sector to aff ordable homes.- Demanding public transport for all, not just for some, that is timely, clean and reliable.- Defending local NHS services within the context of them being part of a national service.
- Opposing all hydraulic fracturing wherever it is proposed as being the antipathy of the kind of energy production we should be investing in - renewable energy.- Supporting small local businesses in terms of taxation, rates and achieving ecological sta-bility.

Darrin GreenThe Green Party Candidate
Liberal Democrats want a stronger economy
and a fairer society, opportunity for everyone.
Britain’s economy is crucial to everyone. In-
vestment in road, rail and broadband are essen-
tial and, in Government, Lib Dems promoted all
three – though rail commuter problems contin-
ue and must be addressed. I now want to press
Government to deal with crumbling roads and
pavements, equally important to the economy
and to local people.
Good education is the basis of opportuni-
ty. We want a qualifi ed teacher in every class
room. Our Pupil Premium targets resources to
the most disadvantaged children. I will work
to ensure that West Sussex schools are as well
resourced as those in neighbouring counties, to
ensure fairness for local children.
I want the NHS to evolve to face future chal-
lenges. Liberal Democrats have a fully costed
plan to fund the additional £8billion a year that
the NHS will need by 2020. This includes im-
proved funding for vital Mental Health Servic-
es. The Better Care fund has started to integrate
Social Care and Health, but this must go further.
Carers also need more support.
In Horsham, by working with West Sussex
and others, NHS England could provide a fan-
tastic facility around Horsham Hospital to com-
plement, and take pressure off , larger centres at
Crawley and East Surrey.
Liberal Democrats in Government delivered
manifesto priorities on taxes, education, and
the environment, as well as many other poli-
cies. They stopped the Conservatives cutting
benefi ts even more and from privatising our
health service. I want to further this by winning
for Horsham.
Morwen Millson
The Liberal Democrats
Candidate
The Peace Party began as a result of many people feeling and knowing how abhorrent
war is.The Peace Party knows that the world needs
to be completely free of the scourge of war, of the hate and killing, death and trauma. We know that people can learnt to treat oth-ers as they wish to be treated themselves, and when this happens, war will become impossi-ble.
The Peace Party campaigns to challenge each elector to examine where she or he stands on violence in our society before they vote for par-liaments and councils in Britain and Europe. We want to:
- Keep health care as a fully funded public service - no profi teering and no privatisation.- Create a housing programme to ensure that everyone has a home of their own to rent or buy.
- Make sure everyone has access to free local travel.
- Reduce carbon dioxide emissions eventu-ally to mid 19th century levels to stop climate change.
- Bring social and economic justice for every-one by basing laws on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.- Ensure that education and training are free at every stage and abolish tuition fees.- Build full employment so everyone is as-sure a basic living income. The Peace Party wants to return power to the people.

The Independent CandidateIn Horsham, we have some major issues that are correctly and understandably of great concern to Horsham residents. Concerning fracking I would oppose any fracking whilst we do not understand the long term environmental eff ects of fracking and until we do we should not be “taking a chance” on such an important issue. In so far as the ex-
pansion of Gatwick is concerned I would want to take a local poll and refl ect the outcome of that poll in any vote that I would cast regarding this issue. I would work for a better railway ser-vice, and no rail fare increases that adversely aff ect Horsham residents. There needs to be an equitable policy of railway infrastructure investment. I would also fi ght for the football club to have planning permission for its new ground. It is unacceptable that the local council rejected the plans, against the wishes of local residents and the advice of offi cers. These are my pledges to you, the residents, of Horsham. They are outlined under the fol-lowing headings:- To protect the NHS from privatisation and fi ght for investment to make the NHS the best in the world
- To campaign for aff ordable housing so that everyone can rent or buy their own home- To use the money that the Tory/Lib Dem government used to cut taxes for the top 5% of earners to cut business rates for 1.5m small businesses
- Labour will cut taxes for 24 million working people through a new lower starting rate of tax.
- To stand up for Horsham residents, put-ting their concerns above those of other vested Interest

Something New is a new kind of political
party, here to bring British democracy into
the 21st century.
We stand for a future where you are in
control. We believe that the best ideas come
from you, and that your voice should be
heard. That's why our manifesto is unique;
it's the only one where you can visit the
website, click edit, and put in your own ide-
as. It's like Wikipedia, but for a vision of a
better future.
I’m not a politician, but I'm standing be-
cause I'm frustrated by the lack of choice
and vision on off er. I’ve spent my career us-
ing the web to deal with the big problems.
Now there's a movement growing that will
take democracy forward into the networked
age, and I'm proud to be a part of it with
Something New.
We believe that you want unbeatable
public services, no more austerity, bet-
ter democracy, clean energy and a gov-
ernment that protects your freedoms. We
need transparency in government, and we
need to let your community plan how it will
change in future, not just object.
We know that you care, even if our sys-
tem doesn't hear you. Let's build a better
system together.
I am a Chartered Engineer, who has lived with his family in Horsham District since 1973. I have held senior positions in large interna-tional companies, at home and abroad.I became a Horsham District Councillor in 2007, a Cabinet Member in 2009 and then Dep-uty Leader and Cabinet Member for Finance. After Cameron’s move to the PC centre ground, I joined UKIP in 2013, before being se-lected as Parliamentary Candidate for Horsh-am. I had lost faith in politicians who seem to put their political careers before the interests of the people. By contrast, I shall listen to and work tirelessly for, the people of Horsham.I want integrity and transparency brought back into politics, with experienced leaders who have risen due to their ability and convic-tion, regardless of class or gender. I want to drive out red tape, waste and arbitrary targets, using the proceeds to help restore essential services. I want our youngsters to have educa-tion and training fi t for the future and our en-trepreneurs to have the freedom and incentive to innovate. I want the capability of our Armed Forces to be restored, with a rational foreign policy. I also want more locally accessible NHS facilities and for local democracy to work again - avoiding indiscriminate building on our green fi elds.
Most of all I want to pass on a democratic and sovereign country to the next generation.

Mystery exotic creatures roaming around Sussex
During the late 1970s Sussex news-papers and police stations were be-sieged with phone-calls of strange and mysterious creatures said to inhabit the local woods.
Those who were fortunate…or unfortunate…enough to see such beasts claimed that whilst the ani-mals were small and fl eeting, they resembled no known animal indig-enous to these shores.
One Hailsham lady reported that the animal she saw had a distinc-tive striped tail whilst a man from Brighton who was cycling to work one morning claimed that the crea-
ture he’d seen had strange dark cir-cles around its eyes. Nobody knew if the witnesses were caught up in some hallucination or whether they’d actually seen an unusual ani-mal but in the July of 1977 police at Hove were bombarded by several phone-calls from people claiming to have seen animals matching the description of those made by others.
Eventually, and fi nally taking the reports seriously two police offi cers visited the house of a Hove woman after she claimed that a strange ani-mal had been observed in her gar-den and had even fell asleep on the wall. Of course, the two policemen didn’t expect to fi nd anything upon arrival but how wrong they were as they came face to face with a snooz-ing raccoon – a two-foot long North American resident with a distinctive striped tail and what appeared to be
dark patches around its eyes. The animal certainly wasn’t fazed
by the offi cers and continued its summery slumber upon the garden wall. One of the offi cers – armed with a large net – decided it was time to apprehend the culprit behind all of the mystery animal sightings and so advanced with cautious to the wall. However, upon reaching the spot of the animal the offi cers at-tention was drawn to a voice calling and from behind him and just as he was about to turn he felt a searing pain in his thumb.
Looking down towards his hand he noticed that the resting raccoon had taken a bite of his digit result-ing in a stream of blood trickling to the ground. The raccoon was even-tually captured and given to an ani-mal specialist at a local zoo but the big mystery lie in the fact that no-
one knows where the alien came from but then again, the 1970s was the decade of exotic animal mania with many people purchasing – le-gally or otherwise – strange, for-eign animals ranging from reptiles to big cats. Indeed, it was claimed that more than 4,000 alien species were being kept in the county but whether sightings of such strange striped-tailed creatures across the county could all be blamed on rac-coon populations is something we’ll never know.
As recently as 2012 raccoons were still turning up in Sussex, a speci-men with one eye was found in West Sussex and taken in by staff at Sci-entology headquarters who initially thought the animal was a badger.
Even so, people have always kept strange pets. In 1938 it was reported that a polecat was to blame for the
death of a baby in Sussex. A Mrs Frankel had gone into her garden to keep an eye on her seven-month old baby who was asleep in its peram-bulator when she heard a whimper-ing sound and spotted blood upon the cheek of her child. Mrs Frankel ran into the house to phone a doc-tor and then returned to her baby and scooped it up in her arms only to feel a strange wriggling sensation under the blankets. Suddenly a fur-ry head peeked out of the blankets and attempted to bite the distressed woman. The animal dropped to the ground and as Mrs Frankel took her baby to the house they were chased by the creature. Mrs Fran-kel reached the safety of her house, slamming the door to prevent the intrusive creature entering. Sadly doctors could do nothing to save the baby which died hours later.

John Lewis names Horsham branch manager
John Lewis has announced the ap-pointment of Nigel Davis as the branch manager of its new ‘At Home’ shop in Horsham.
As branch manager, Nigel will be responsible for the overall success of the shop - the 11th ‘At Home’ site for John Lewis, and the second co-located site with Waitrose. He will also lead the 92 strong team of Partners (staff), including sales as-sistants, specialist advisers and ca-tering professionals.
Nigel has been with the John Lewis Partnership for six years. He first started as branch manager at Waitrose Bromley South, where he stayed for just over two years before moving to Waitrose Tenterden.
Following a successful three years
at Waitrose, Nigel moved across to the John Lewis division, where he took up the role of selling op-erations manager at the Bluewa-ter branch. He was then appointed branch manager of John Lewis ‘At Home’ Tunbridge Wells and it is from here that he will lead the new team at the ‘At Home’ shop in Hor-sham.
Commenting on his new role, Ni-gel said: “I’m delighted to become the branch manager for the busi-ness’ 11th ‘At Home’ shop. Having been at the helm of John Lewis ‘At Home’ Tunbridge Wells, I know how popular the format is with custom-ers and I’m excited to be bringing this to Horsham and the surround-ing areas. I’m also looking forward
to working closely with the Wait-rose team on what is set to be a very exciting joint venture.”
Liz Mihell, Head of Selling, John Lewis at home said: “Nigel is very well qualified to take over the branch manager role in Horsham. His career with John Lewis has giv-en him unrivalled experience across many elements of the business and he is an extremely well respected Partner who is looking forward to contributing to the ambitious plans we have for developing John Lewis in the future.”
Jo Thomas will manage the re-located Waitrose branch. She said: “By being able to bring the Wait-rose and John Lewis brands togeth-er in one location, Horsham shop-pers will get the very best of what the John Lewis Partnership has to offer. We are looking forward to working alongside Nigel's team to provide more choice and help en-courage more people to visit the town.”
John Lewis ‘At Home’ Horsham will focus on furniture, furnish-ing accessories, homeware, home and electrical technology, nursery and travel goods. Waitrose will in-clude new concepts and services, including a juice bar, wine and beer bar, a new bakery and an extensive wine department. The store will also feature new eat-in areas where customers will be able to enjoy ta-pas, deli platters and freshly baked goods.
SOUTHWATER PARISH NEIGHBOURHOOD PLANCALL FOR SITES
BackgroundThe right for communities to prepare Neighbourhood Plans was established through the Localism Act 2011, and gives the power for the whole community to develop a shared vision for the future. It provides a mechanism by which local residents and businesses can influence the planning of the area in which they live and work.Southwater Parish Council is preparing a Neighbourhood Plan, as it was felt that a Neighbourhood Plan would assist in managing future challenges in order to obtain the best possible result for the parish. A Steering Group was formed to lead the process.
Why are we calling for sites? As part of its work in assessing development needs, the Southwater Parish Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group is required to call landowners and agents for land within the parish for expressions of interest in applying for future development permission. This will be an informal opportunity for land owners and agents to propose sites within the parish of Southwater for possible development.Putting a site forward does not guarantee that the Steering Group will support its development in the future, as all sites need to be judged against relevant planning policies and other considerations. We will consider proposals for a wide range of development uses. The site suggestions will be used to guide and inform the preparation of the Neighbourhood Plan. The deadline for submitting sites for consideration is 12 noon Friday 29 May 2015.
If you want a site to be considered then submission forms and further information on this Call for Sites can be found on the Southwater Parish Council website http://www.southwater-pc.gov.uk.Submissions will be accepted via email on [email protected] or by letter to:-The Secretary, Southwater Parish Neighbourhood Plan, Southwater Par-ish Council, Beeson House, 26 Lintot Square, Fairbank Road, Southwater, West Sussex, RH13 9LA. All call for site submissions must be received by 12 noon Friday 29th May

Are you delivering a sensational service?
This month I am turning my atten-tion to the importance of deliver-ing an exceptional standard of ser-vice to your customers - all of the time - not just when you are in the mood.
For me, marketing and customer service are inseparable and highly compatible bedfellows. There’s little point driving an army of hot pros-pects to your door with your clever shoestring marketing only to let them down afterwards because your service fails to meet the mark. If you really want to deliver fantastic cus-tomer service on a consistent basis, you have to map out your customer’s journey from the moment they come on board through to delivery and that all important after-care. Identify the glitches so that you can rectify them swiftly. And survey your customers regularly so that you know what they really think of you rather than what you would like them to think. That’s because if you fail to deliver your best at any of your customer’s touch points your customer will become bewildered. “They were so good before… Why are they so average now?” “They were so amazing and
attentive when it came to signing me up and now they are slow to return my calls.” You don’t want custom-ers saying or thinking this and then spreading the bad news to others.
It might seem like a tough call but you simply cannot aff ord to lower your service standards at any stage of your customer’s journey. So, when analysing these touch points I would like you to review the quality of your communications; your emails, sales letters and telephone calls. Be critical. Do you project a warm and friendly tone or are your commu-nications clumsy, way too concise and lacking that all-important clar-ity? Working with a good copywriter to re-launch your communications and a good trainer who can show your team how to communicate with warmth and passion on the phone could be a good and long overdue in-vestment in your business.
Being great at what you do does not automatically bestow these skills upon you or your team, so look upon bringing resources into your business an investment, not an ex-pense; an investment that will pay you back at that.
I would like to bring my thoughts to a close this month with a case study of a local business that deliv-ers an amazing standard of customer service every time; so much so that I really am in awe of them. Alex Walker is a local builder, the MD of
APM Walker Building Services. Over the last few years he has made sev-eral improvements to our home and we have always been delighted with his standard of work. He is unfail-ingly cheerful, friendly and caring. What’s more his team know how to handle a vacuum cleaner and mop at the end of a dusty day! Alex recently demonstrated just how much he was willing to go the extra mile with an exceptional standard of customer service. We had a wood burning stove installed in our home offi ce by another business. Despite Alex not being involved in the installation, when the fl at roof leaked he came out at a moment’s notice, diagnosed the problem and even liaised with the installers to ensure the leak was corrected and all was well. He would not accept any payment for his ef-forts saying he was in the area any-way and it was no problem. Needless to say I recommend Alex to anyone within earshot. Delivering a genu-inely amazing standard of customer service is part of his DNA. Is it part of yours?
So, if you really want to turn a customer into a raving fan I would encourage you to embrace the ‘can do’ mentality and to walk that ex-tra mile when it comes to delighting your customers. Draw up a list of the many diff erent ways in which you can WOW your customers and stick to it. You will be rewarded.

West Chiltington, a progressive golf clubpaving the way with new memberships
A golf club in West Sussex has been singled out for praise by the sport's governing body for its innovation in boosting membership numbers.
West Chiltington Golf Club has gone back to the drawing board and created new loyalty schemes and member-ships both for absolute beginners and for those who find they can’t dedicate a lot of time to golf.
The club was forced to take action and get creative in a bid to halt the slide of decreasing club memberships - a problem affecting the majority of clubs in the UK.
In 2014 England Golf - golf's govern-ing body - highlighted the issue in its strategic plan to help secure the future of the sport. It concluded: “The golf business contributes £3.4 billion a year to the English economy. It is the fifth largest participation sport in the country but the number of golf club members has been declining since 2004 and this has put a financial strain on many golf clubs. Overall participa-tion in golf has also been declining steadily since 2007."
To combat this, West Chiltington Golf Club designed a brand new loyalty scheme to encourage anyone, of any age, to give golf a go. “The 9 Hole Club” was launched in March 2014.
West Chiltington Golf Club now has 212 new members of their 9 hole course, nearly 10 per cent of whom have since progressed onto bigger memberships for the 18 hole course. The initiative has been praised by England Golf, who commented “We’re delighted to be supporting West Chiltington in progressing the 9 Hole Club. The last few years has seen many clubs starting to diversify their golf offering to attract more players and more members to their facilities. There’s a national trend of clubs looking at flexible memberships and creating shorter formats of the game to attract more customers, and it’s great to see West Chiltington are at the forefront of exploring different ways to present the game.”
The 9 Hole Club is just £30 per year and offers 50 per cent off green fees for the 9 hole course as well as some vouchers for the 18 hole course to encourage new members to give it a
go. Even main club members have been getting involved to help new golfers; Gary Milburn, a 7 Day member commented “Everyone is so friendly here, it’s a real community and we all try and encourage new golfers, we’ve been organising 18 Hole Taster Days for all the 9 Hole Club, it’s great to see people progress! West Chilt isn’t a stuffy club and that’s what attract-ed me, you’d be hard pushed not to find new friends and playing partners here.”
Due to the continued success of The 9 Hole Club and the increase in ‘nomad-ic golfing’ West Chiltington Golf Club are pioneering the new 18 Hole Club & 18 Hole Club plus’.
The 18 Hole Club Plus includes the opportunity to hold a handicap and enter into competitions at the club for a fee of just £120 per year (plus cgu fees). They are expecting a significant growth this summer in the sale of these memberships and hope to end the year with a much increased playing field.

SAY TO A 2ND RUNWAY AT GATWICKNO
1 Taxpayers Will Pay Billions forInfrastructure Costs
We will pay for the vast new road infrastructure that will bedemanded by an additional 100,000 vehicles per day plusfreight?2
We will pay for the 40,000 new houses3 that will be needed? Thereis currently a shortfall of affordable housing in all the counties thatsurrounding Gatwick.
We will pay for the new schools, hospitals and GPs that will be neededgiven huge inward migration of workers as result of low unemploymentlevels?
We will suffer from 90,000 extra rail travellers daily on the single railwayline in and out of Gatwick if Gatwick expands?2
2 No Compensation for the Majority Newly Affected byAircraft Noise
There will be five new routes over West Sussex impacting on tranquil areas notpreviously affected by aircraft noise.
Gatwick offer nothing in compensation to the majority of residents to becomeimpacted by noise.
3 Worse Air Quality for All and Congestion
Road congestion creates pollution.
Areas around Gatwick already have pollution problems. If the M23 and M25 are at astandstill, how will the 95 million passengers and 60,0002 airport staff access Gatwick?
4 Airlines, Local Authorities, Senior MPs, Big Business Do NotSupport Gatwick Expansion
Easyjet CEO Carolyn McCall’s statement to the Airports Commission says “EasyJet does notsupport a second runway at Gatwick….Gatwick slots have been and are still readily availablenow…”1
Willie Walsh, CEO of British Airways’ parent company International Airlines Group, said “I wouldnot support a runway at Gatwick …. I don’t believe that demand is as strong as Gatwick wouldargue.”7
Gatwick’s promises to fix landing fees could result in a new runway not being a viable businessproposition.2
Gatwick’s runway might cost over £20 billion compared2 to the £9.3 billion suggested by the AirportsCommission6.
12 Local authorities and 8 senior local MPs do not support Gatwick’s proposals.
The Institute of Directors says 61% of its members favour expansion at Heathrow with only 39% preferringGatwick.6
5 Irreversible Environmental Consequence
Gatwick expansion would destroy more listed buildings than the HS2 rail line, will be builton a floodplain, destroy ancient woodlands thereby eroding the natural habitat of manywildlife species and devalue vast swathes of West Sussex, Kent, East Sussex and Surreydue to aircraft noise.
Gatwick will increase the imbalance of the UK’s economy, as regional airports will beforced to reduce capacity due to climate change targets.

Ridley's inspiration came after becoming stranded overnight at Mangotsfi eld station in Bristol, now a disused station on the Mid-land Railway main line.

BBC Folk Award finalist comes to Horsham Folk ClubOn May 10, 2015, Horsham Folk Club will be welcoming young singer and guitarist Sunjay to per-form.
You could be forgiven for think-ing at first listen that Sunjay is older than his 21 years.
With a relaxed and confident manner, vocal style and mastery of his instrument he walks onto a stage and addresses the audience as though he is sitting down to play music with a group of close friends, a completely natural approach for a young man who picked up the gui-tar when he was just 4 years old and hasn’t put it down since.
Sunjay’s style has a natural drift between folk and blues and both camps have recognised his obvi-ous flair. There have been a clutch of award nominations, including winning the Wath Festival Young Performers Award. He also made the final selection for the BBC’s Young Folk Award in 2012, had three nominations at the Exposure Music Awards 2014 and was also recognised by the 2014 British Blues Awards.
Drawing from a rich, musical and cultural background it is hardly sur-prising that Sunjay has quickly be-come recognised as one of the UK’s rising stars. His performances have been described as “mature and con-fident”, while his guitar playing has been hailed as “superb, brilliant, experienced, intricate & faultless”.
Sunjay clocked over a hun-dred tour dates in 2013 supporting the likes of Steeleye Span, Mar-tin Simpson, Passenger, and Terry Reid. With two albums already to his name, (‘Seems So Real’ 2011 and ‘One Night Only’ 2013) Sunjay has just recorded his third release “Sunjay” released September 29, 2014.
The self-titled new album fea-tures Sunjay at his finest, collabo-rating with musicians including producer Eddy Morton (The Bush-bury Mountain Daredevils), Liam Genockey (Steeleye Span), Katrio-na Gilmore (Gilmore & Roberts), Dan Walsh (Walsh & Pound), Sarah Smout (The Gren Bartley Band), and Charlie Barker.
Folk All Magazine said: “For such a young performer, Sunjay shows real confidence, maturity and ease on stage that it seems like he has been doing nothing else all of his life.”
For more information and the latest tour news, visit www.sunjay.tv or www.facebook.com/Official-Sunjay.
He is playing on Sunday, May 10, The Horsham Folk Club, The Nor-mandy Centre, Denne Road, Hor-sham, West Sussex. RH12 1JF.
Doors open at 7.45 pm and tickets cost £7.00 (Members £5.00).
To book, call the box office on 01403 268611 or visit http://www.horshamfolkclub.co.uk/index.html.
Victory food - then and now
Before the war, we were importing nearly three quarters of our food so the government was already plan-ning for rationing as early as 1936. They knew the country would be in danger of starving in the event of war as we could not rely so much on imports.
By the time war was eventu-ally declared in September 1939, many Land Girls had already been trained and one recalls, “I had six weeks training at Horsham College as a diary maid. We had to practise on rubber udders. I learnt to make butter too.” Incredibly, by 1943, the Women’s Land Army had increased the nation’s food production to 70%. Along with rationing and the Dig for Victory campaign, our small island averted potential famine.
All food shops had to use their nearest farms and wholesalers in order to reduce distribution costs
and save petrol. Everyone was is-sued a ration book and you had to elect which butchers, bakers, green-grocers or grocery shops you would use the respective coupons at. There were, of course, no supermarkets. Eggs, cheese, butter, bacon and sugar were amongst the items ra-tioned. The production of fruit and vegetables was increased thanks to the hard work of the Land Army on farms (that were often taken over by the Government) and the popu-lation was also encouraged to grow their own. Allotments became very important and some of Horsham Park was even given over to growing food.
Food - 1945 versus 2015CHEESE - during the war, all
cheese had to be white cheddar, nicknamed Government Cheddar. The number of cheese makers de-clined dramatically with many dair-ies forced to provide just milk and butter. The choice of British cheese remained dire until the 1990’s but today we now produce more vari-eties of cheese than even France. Sussex, especially, is blessed with numerous artisan cheese makers with their new and revived cheeses freely available from markets and local food shops.
BREAD - considered as a staple during the war, bread had been pre-dominately white for many years but come 1942 wheat imports were un-der threat from the U-Boats so the National Loaf was introduced and bakers were only allowed to bake this one type of loaf. Using all of the grain including the husks it did not go down well but was high in fibre and had added calcium to prevent rickets. Whilst white bread made a comeback in the following dec-ades, bakers have returned to using wholegrain flours and revived more traditional bread-making including the use of sourdoughs. Artisan bak-ers are certainly not restricted to one type of loaf and real bread has seen a big revival.
EGGS - as one of the many ra-tioned foods, tins of dried egg from America was also made available
to supplement the short supply of fresh eggs. Despite Government posters trying to convince the Brit-ish housewife that these would make excellent omelettes, dried eggs remained one of the most un-popular foods imposed on the Brit-ish public. Today, there remains a big taste difference with even fresh eggs. American eggs are washed and sprayed with a sanitiser and then always refrigerated so the taste is lost. The freshest and tastiest egg of all is the one laid free range, close to home and not cold stored which is still what we rightly demand.
FRUIT & VEGETABLES - local sea-sonal produce fed the nation during wartime and although variety was limited it was fresh and full of fla-vour. There was a small supply still of imported fruits such as oranges which generated huge queues when they came into the greengrocers. Years after the war, the new su-permarket shelves overflowed with imported, mass produced fruit and vegetables shipped from around the world. Unfortunately, flavour was compromised as it was invariably harvested before it was ripe and cold stored. Today, people are turning once again to fruit and vegetables produced more locally with heritage varieties revived and taste returned.
MEAT & FISH - the war forced many to source readily available game meats such as rabbit and pi-geon. Pigs were fed on kitchen waste and fish rocketed in price as fishing became so dangerous in the waters around our coast. Rationing points were introduced for canned meat and fish. American imported sau-sage meat, Spam, proved so unpop-ular so these the points were heavily reduced to encourage people to eat it. Today, wild meat such as venison is becoming increasingly popular again as is fresh fish, locally made sausages and cured meats. Despite a social media campaign a few years ago to revive Spam, it is clear that this may be a step too far.

Four weeks of fresh quality food at KokoroReview - Kokoro, West Street, Horsham
Trudging the streets of Horsham, optimistic about shifting the re-maining baby (Lindt) weight, I've always had the sneaking suspi-cion that all I needed in my life was more raw fi sh.
I therefore greeted the appear-ance of Kokoro a few weeks ago with much enthusiasm and, hav-ing picked up a menu from outside pre-opening, had already short listed approximately seventeen things to try fi rst.
Opening day, and I decided to get over my long held, as it tran-spires unfounded, fear of hot food in trays at the counter. Opting for sweet chilli chicken and rice. I also made the snap decision to get the medium pot so I wouldn't be left
hungry. As Mr T would say 'Look at the pot sizes fi rst, fool...'
Selfl essly ploughing through it on behalf of enormously appetited readers everywhere I can confi rm that it was fantastic and, unusu-ally for a lunchtime chicken dish purporting to have chilli in it, had a deftly applied chilli kick. If you're super hungry or you showed rather too much support for your local hostelry last night, you won't do better than this.
The food was so good I wanted more and soon. Needing guidance, I of course deferred to the im-mortal words of LL Cool J...' Stay focused, go after your dreams and keep moving toward your goal.' And so it was decided. I must visit regularly until I'd tried everything on the menu.
Well four weeks in and I've tack-led the salmon nigiri and the Cali-fornia rolls, all much bigger and fresher than your average take away sushi options. The soft shell
crab rolls were as good as I've had at Roka whilst the salmon teriyaki was both deliciously succulent and worryingly moreish.
The menu could seem a little on the pricey side at fi rst glance but once you have seen the portion siz-es and sampled the freshness and quality of the ingredients it repre-sents great value for money.
If needs be, I am going to make sandwiches all week to justify reg-ular trips to Kokoro. Every time I've been in the staff have been friendly and courteous which, combined with the great quality food, makes it a fantastic addition to Horsham's thriving food scene.

Refurbished bungalow close to town centre
Cootes Avenue, HorshamPrice: £380,000
Mayhew Estates are proud to present to the market this is superb example of how to pre-sent a property. Having under-gone complete refurbishment the current owner has trans-formed this modest bungalow into a stylish contemporary home which offers a flexible layout and is located perfectly within walking distance of Hor-sham town centre.
You enter the property into a bright entrance hall which ben-efits from wood flooring and a small storage cupboard. A set of double doors lead from here into an attractive sitting room with a feature fireplace. The room comfortably fits two large sofas and a coffee table as well as providing space for the T.V, making this a great room to relax in at the end of the day. The hub of most homes is tra-ditionally the kitchen and in this property it is no different. The kitchen sits in the middle of the property and provides fabulous space to cook and en-tertain with a feature breakfast bar and ample space for a large dining room table. From here there is access to a large util-ity room which itself leads to the garden. An internal corri-dor leads from the kitchen to a central family bathroom which will simply take your breath away. An amazing space, the bathroom has been compre-hensively updated to include his and hers wash hand basins, separate double shower cubical and feature, double ended bath.
The three bedrooms are at the rear of the house and all fit a double bed. The master bed-room is a great size and pro-vides built in cupboards along with access to a conservatory which is a perfect place for sit-ting out and soaking up the lovely garden.
Contact us to make an ap-pointment on our open day on April 18, by calling Mayhew Es-tates 01403 276 777.

U12 Horsham Hawks 93 – 58 U12 Horsham Hawks Parents
Youth BasketballDave Clayton – Horsham Hawks
In an end of season game with a twist, parents of the U12 Horsham Hawks swapped the side-lines for the hardwood and a chance to compete against the team they have encouraged and supported throughout this season’s cam-paign.
The Hawks put their 14 wins in 16 games record on the line in a con-test featuring normal rules, table officials and qualified referee to give parents an opportunity to ex-perience first-hand what it is like to compete against one of the most successful youth basketball teams in Sussex.
An enthusiastic and athletic par-ent’s team found their rhythm quickly, surprising the young Hawks with an impressive range of well hidden basketball experience to trail the U12’s by just 2 points af-ter five minutes. Not wanting to get embarrassed the Hawks responded with a combination of speed, ac-curate passing and clinical finish-ing going on a 16-2 run that put the youngsters in control at the end of the first quarter.
In quarters two and three the parents led by John Willcox, Domi-nic Wakefield, Nicky Rose and Paul Rose turned the clock back fifteen years finding the stamina to put together consecutive 6-0 and 8-2 runs much to the excitement of the crowd. With the U12’s leading 69-46 with just eight minutes remain-ing in the game the young Hawks
again showed their metal finishing with a 21-6 run of their own which included three point baskets from Miguel Venturini, Josh Lea-Clayton and Fin Bennett.
As the final buzzer brought the contest to an end both players and parents celebrated an enjoy-able game and parents especially reflected and appreciation of the skills and athleticism demonstrated by the U12 Hawks squad on a regular basis.
One parent whose daughter be-gan playing for Horsham this year commented, “The kids are amazing and it gave us the unique insight of experiencing first-hand how pro-fessional, spirited and gifted they are. They are great team, with great coaching and leadership and I feel very proud that my daughter can be part of the Hawks.”
Another parent who has been with the Hawks for three years stated, “I have always admired our fabulous team (and coaches), but my respect for their skills and fit-ness has increased a thousand fold after this game.”
The Hawks now have three weeks to prepare for their Sussex Cup playoff semi-final against the Hay-wards Heath Eagles.

Pulborough fight back against Chichester
Bowls Jane Gray – Pulborough BC
Sunday April 26 saw Pulborough play their first away game of the 2015 outdoor season, against Chichester Priory in the Brookes Motors League (BML).
2 triples played a game of 2 halves, with 1 rink turning the tables on their opponents in the second half and the other dropping points. Rink
3 was skipped by John Brown, with number 1 Jane Gray and number 2 Ivan Salmon. By end 9 they held a healthy lead of 3 points at 7/4 only to drop a 5 on end 10 and another 4 on end 13 to finish up 13/19 against a tough team in good form.
Rink 4 looked, for the first 8 ends, as if Pulborough were going down with a single figure score, but Skip and Club Captain, Paul Day, with number 1 Pauline Adsett and num-
ber 2 Chris Etherington, refused to give up and fought back from 14/3 down to within 1 point after 18 ends finishing 15/16, a fantastic come-back despite just missing out on any points for their first league match of the season.
Tomorrow, Saturday May 2 at 2pm Pulborough host Billingshurst and then follow that with an away game at Henfield on Sunday May 3 at 2pm. Spectators always welcome.

Horsham beached at Normandy
CricketMartin Read – Sports Reporter
England & Wales Cricket Board National Club ChampionshipHorsham 165 All Out (40.2 overs) Normandy 166-4 (34.5 overs) Normandy won by 6 wickets
Horsham won the national club knockout cup fi nal at Lord’s in 2005 – an event to be commem-orated with a special match in August – but this year they were unceremoniously dumped out of the competition in the very fi rst round after travelling to the Guildford area to play Sthe urrey
Championship Premier Division side Normandy.
Before the game Horsham skip-per Sam Attfi eld expressed con-cerns about limited player avail-ability for the match, yet after winning the toss his team got off to a promising if steady start. But once Craig Gallagher (20) and the skipper (15) were out only three subsequent batsmen made double fi gures, with wickets falling at reg-ular intervals. Tom Johnson, com-ing in with three down, batted in typically pugilistic style notching up the highest score of the game – his 69 coming off 53 balls with nine fours and two maximums. Twenty wides were the major ele-ment towards extras posting the second highest contribution to the inadequate 165 run total, almost
fi ve of the 45 over allocation being unused.
Two Normandy batsmen made sixties and while the six Horsham bowlers used stuck to their task, Mark Haines taking 2-43, Horsh-am’s meagre total proved impossi-ble to defend, the hosts winning at a canter with a generous supply of wickets and overs in hand.
Horsham’s fi rst serious home encounter of the new season, at Cricketfi eld Road tomorrow (Sat-urday May 2), sees them taking on Division 2 side St James’s Monte-fi ore from Keymer in the Sussex Cricket League Gray Nichols T20 cup. Horsham have won the com-petition eight times in the last 16 years but after a major scare in last season’s fi rst round at Slinfold they will be taking nothing for granted. Battling Billingshurst bow out of the National CupEngland & Wales Cricket Board National Club ChampionshipCamberley 202 All Out (44.2 overs) Billingshurst 155 All Out (34.5 overs)Camberley won by 47 runs
Cricket Martin Read – Sports Reporter
Although Billingshurst lost this fl uctuating game they frightened their Surrey Championship Division 1 hosts several times along the way.
Inserted, Camberley passed 100 without loss, alarm bells ringing un-til following Ben Williams’ break-through two more quick wickets put Billingshurst back in the game. Later partnerships took Camberley to 180-5 before another fl urry of dismissals reduced them to a lower than feared 202 all out. David Dunn fi nished with 4-39, while Kelly Russell, Andy Barr and Ben Williams shared the re-maining spoils.
In reply Billingshurst were soon struggling at 6-2 before Mike Bur-roughs with 32 and Andy Barr (64)
put on 98 placing Billingshurst in a match winning position with more than half the job done and overs aplenty still in the kitty. But miserly wicket-taking bowling on a wearing pitch ate through the lower order, only James Long getting into double fi gures as the last seven wickets fell for a disappointing 34 runs.
Billingshurst captain Ben Wil-liams told the District Post: “We were missing key players but we put in some good performances. I was a bit worried after they got off to such a good start but we stuck to our task and clawed it back really well. Mike Burroughs was unlucky to fall vic-tim to a shooter when he was batting nicely. It was a used pitch and it got slower and lower making life diffi cult for us but we gave a good account of ourselves. We need to get used to the new standard of cricket that we fi nd ourselves competing against – our next game is in the Sussex T20 Cup against always competitive Preston Nomads!”
The game against Nomads is at Fulking tomorrow (Saturday May 02).
Horsham Lions promoted while fi rst team look forward to Sussex Cup fi nal
RugbyDave Smith – Sports Editor
Horsham Lions, Horsham Rugby Clubs 2nd XV, have been pro-moted into the Sussex League One next season after fi nishing third in the Sussex Intermediate League.
Following the 1st XV’s promo-tion, after winning their division, this means that Horsham Rugby Club has both its top two senior sides playing at the highest level since the introduction of league rugby at the club.
Meanwhile Horsham’s 1st XV are focused on the Bob Rogers Sussex Cup Final at East Grinstead on May 9 where they will meet ei-ther Crowborough or Haywards Heath.

Horsham’s twin town Saint Maixent-l’Ecole to make rugby club visitRugby Dave smith – Sports Editor
The French Tricolour will fl y over Horsham Rugby Club this Satur-day, May 2, as Horsham welcomes the rugby club of its French twin town of Saint Maixent-l’Ecole.
The Chairman of Horsham Dis-trict Council will offi cially welcome the Saint Maixent visitors while current and former players will turn out in strength. The rugby club is putting on a full day of ac-tivity to encourage the people of Horsham to turn out and enjoy a very English welcome for a French touring team.
Horsham’s twinning with Saint Maixent l’Ecole began when the two Rugby clubs got in touch in the early 1970s and arranged recipro-cal tours. After that, the councils backed the idea and the two towns were offi cially twinned. Rugby matches between the two clubs died out in the 1990s but last year Horsham’s Colts Rugby team re-
vived the traditions and visited Saint Maixent. It was a hugely suc-cessful visit and sporting and cul-tural links were restored.
The Rugby Club bar will be open all day from 11am -6pm and there’ll be food available through-out with the match kicking off at
1.30pm. In advance of that, Hor-sham council chairman Cllr Brian O’Connell will offi cially welcome the players and offi cials from Saint Maixent. Among the special guests at the club, there’ll be players, who took part in those early tours in the 70s, plus others who played Saint Maixent in the 1980s and 90s, and members of Horsham’s Twinning Committee.
Hepworth’s brewery is supplying a specially labelled beer for the oc-casion, which will be on sale at the clubhouse. South Lodge is sup-plying a meal of fi nest cottage pie which will be followed by English cheese and biscuits. Saint Maix-ent’s players will also be visiting the town centre on Saturday morn-ing to experience a busy Horsham spring market.
The club invites the people of Horsham to come along on Satur-day from 11am, enjoy the hospital-ity of the club, welcome the French visitors, and enjoy an international game of rugby.

Two more years for Hornets at Gorings MeadFootballDave Smith – Sports Editor
Horsham YMCA FC Chairman Mick Browning has announced that an agreement has been reached to al-low Horsham FC to ground share at Gorings Mead until the end of the 2016/17 season.
Following their relegation this season Horsham FC will be playing next season in the same division as their Landlords, Horsham YMCA. Both teams will be aiming for pro-motion next season which will re-sult in the fixtures between the two clubs being an all together tenser affair than would normally be the case.
The full statement issued by Hor-sham YMCA FC reads as follows.
Horsham YMCA Football Club has agreed a ground sharing agreement
with Horsham Football Club to use Gorings Mead for a further two years, until 30 June 2017, by which time Horsham FC will have played at Gorings Mead for some eight years.
The club do not intend any ground sharing agreements to use the Gor-ings Mead facilities after the above noted date.
The demands of ground shar-ing have made it impossible for the club to undertake one of its core activities, youth football, whilst Horsham FC are using the club’s facilities. Therefore, this decision has been taken to enable the club to provide opportunities for future YMCA youth teams to play at Gor-ings Mead.
The club would like to wish Hor-sham FC success with its future on and off-field activities.

Sullivan brothers shine as Horsham YMCA secure fifth place table finish
Saturday April 25 - Sussex County League Div 1Horsham YMCA 4 – 2 Chichester City
FootballTom Norris – Football Reporter
Siblings Nick and Dan Sullivan shared the spoils for Horsham YMCA in their final game of the season on Saturday, as they both found the score sheet during a 4-2 win over Chichester City.
Striker Nick netted either side of a Matt Crane own goal and a rare headed finish from brother Dan to give the hosts a 3-1 lead at the break, before the front man com-pleted his hatrick in the second
half and the Lillywhites added a consolatory second.
The three points secures a fifth placed Division 1 finish for YM, just ahead of local rivals Loxwood on goal difference.
Manager Peter Buckland com-mented: “I don’t think that the three points were ever in doubt, although we seemed to take our foot off the pedal when they made it 4-2. We missed some chances again. It wasn’t a bad performance, but it wasn’t one of our better ones. Chichester aren’t a bad side. They have got a good work ethic and they’re capable of upsetting teams. Maybe the game was tighter than everyone thought it was going to be, but it is a nice way to finish
the season. That is a great mindset now to go into pre-season with. To a man, they are all on board next year, and I just said to the play-ers that I don’t think that we need major surgery. You’ve only got to look at our performances against the higher teams in the league to see that. What we need is a bit of tweaking. It’s a real tight-knit group and it makes you feel com-fortable. I know exactly where we need to strengthen and we’ve got the players in mind. I’m really ex-cited about next year.

Heath exceed expectations with a top ten finishSaturday April 25 - Sussex County League Div 1Eastbourne United 0 - 2 Broad-bridge Heath
FootballAndrew Crisp – BBH FC
Broadbridge Heath ended the 2014/15 season and final game in the Sussex County Football League with a 2-0 victory away at Eastbourne United.
With the league being rebranded the Southern Combination Football League from next season, Heath Manager Steve Painter wanted to finish on a high but knew that regardless of the result his team would end the season in the high-est ever position in the clubs his-tory.
On a hot, sunny but windy after-noon, Heath Manager Steve Painter welcomed back Andy Howard as a late replacement goalkeeper and his former captain and centre-half, who has missed most of the season through injury, kept a clean sheet as The Bears recorded their 10th away league victory of the season.
Painter’s side took the lead mid-way through the half when Ollie Moore rose above everyone to pow-er in a header from a Piers McDer-mott corner to bring his season’s tally to 24 goals. Jamal Sultan could have added a second 10 min-utes before the break but his shot was charged down by Eastbourne United’s keeper Russ Tanner. The
home side found chances limited in the opening half with their best ef-fort on 44 minutes was when Dean Stevens headed wide of an open goal from a Jason Taylor cross.
With the wind now on their backs it was the hosts who started bet-ter in the second half, Wes Tate looked the most likely Eastbourne player to score and saw one effort arrow narrowly wide of Howard’s right hand post, then hit another straight at Howard from 20 yards. On 80 minutes Jason Taylor was foiled by an alert Howard after a long punt down field from Tanner but the Heath defence stood firm and twice came close to adding to their score, first when Jake Legran-ge whipped in a low cross from the right which hit a defender running back and was deflected inches wide of the post, then a long throw from Rob Godfrey was struck sweetly by Jake Holmes but flew straight into the arms of Tanner, then in time added on, Sultan picked out Hol-mes with a delightful through ball and the Heath striker calmly slot-ted past Tanner with the outside of his right boot from 18 yards.
The win means Heath finish in 9th place, greatly exceeding the clubs expectations, which back in August were just to try and keep away from the threat of relegation.
Heath Team: A Howard, Sebu-liba (Legrange 75), Robinson, M Flack, Waddingham, Moore, God-frey, McDerrmott (Mobsby 80), Andrade, Greg (Holmes 70), Sultan.
Cottesmore Golf Club host Sussex Seniors for first time
GolfDave Smith – Sports Editor
Twenty teams of senior golfers from all over Sussex descended on Cottesmore Golf Club to compete for the Sussex Senior Captains’ and Committee Shield.
This year Cottesmore hosted the event for the first time and visit-ing teams were full of praise for the attractiveness and improve-ments in the course and suggested that Cottesmore host the event next year.
After an exciting day’s golf Cottesmore’s President, Paddy Dowzer, presented the Winners Shield to the Goodwood team of
Trevor Littlecott, Mike Hancock, Ray Twine and Roger Herbert. This was the third year running that Goodwood have won the Shield which is competed for annually by all the major golf Clubs in Sussex. The winning team scored 83 stabl-eford points in a four ball better ball format, 6 points ahead of the team from Willingdon Golf Club.
The leading home team of Alex Morrison, Steve Atkins, David D'Singh and Ron Vance scored an impressive 89 stableford points. However they did not compete for the Winners Shield since playing on their home course was considered too great an advantage over visiting teams.

Hornets dreadful - but fans show the team how to Rock ‘n’ Roll
Saturday 25th April 2015 - Ryman League Division One SouthTooting & Mitcham United 5 - 0 Horsham
The season has come to an end for Horsham, and all those associated with the club will be glad to see the back of it.
In a season that has seen three diff erent management set ups, al-most a complete change in playing personnel midterm, relegation after fi nishing rock bottom of the divi-sion and the controversial Horsham Council refusal of the club’s plan-ning application for a new home; things could not have been any worse.
A decent performance in this last game would have given the mag-nifi cent and long suff ering Hornets fans something to cheer and could have lifted the club of the bottom slot. However this latest embar-rassing showing against a team that sit in mid table comfort shows just how much needs to be done if they are not to struggle next year at a lower level. There is no doubt Dom di Paola will totally rebuild during
the summer and get in some of his ‘own men’ through his local con-tacts. And he will need to rebuild as the current players have failed to lift themselves one iota since his arrival at the club three matches ago.
The passionate supporters, many dressed as Elvis, were again left frustrated as those charged with wearing the Horsham colours again showed an amazing lack of eff ort and desire that allowed the opposi-tion to romp to a 5-0 win without having to hardly break sweat.
Di Paola had a lot of players miss-ing but that cannot be used as an excuse as Tooting & Mitcham are hardly settled, manager Craig Tan-ner has been told he is no longer re-quired and a few youth players made the starting line up.
In a lacklustre fi rst half Horsh-am’s eff orts were limited to a long range Tom Bold free kick straight at the keeper and a tame eff ort from Samir Hadi that went wide. Tooting & Mitcham, although hardly play-ing well, found the net with ease, scoring twice before the break. Billy Marshall hit a long pass that Izokun missed allowing Danny Summers to hit a shot that beat the defenceless keeper Williams with twenty three minutes gone. Sixteen minutes later youth team player Leon Lalor-Dell caught Branford and Hope fl atfooted by slipping the ball in between them
for Max Noble to score a simple sec-ond.
The second half saw no improve-ment from Horsham and after fi f-teen minutes a rare mistake from player of the season, keeper Gareth Williams, resulted in Summers scor-ing his second and his team’s third. Horsham youth product, seventeen year old Jake Chadwick, came on for his debut but was sadly let down on his big occasion by his calamitous teammates as within minutes of the youngsters introduction another two farcical goals were conceded. Williams saved well from Summers to prevent the Tooting & Mitcham striker hitting his hat-trick but youngster Lalor-Dell tapped in the loose ball. Two minutes later Lalor-Dell turned provider by passing to Billy Marshall who had time to con-trol the ball on his chest before scor-ing and completing the rout.
So next season the Hornets will compete in the renamed Southern Combination Football League and unlike this season they will certainly need to ‘compete’ as local derbies against Horsham YMCA, Broad-bridge Heath and Loxwood will not be easy.
