PROTESTERS are demanding that a planning decision for 146 homes in Willaston be taken to judicial review. Local residents are angry that the development, on fields to the north of Moorfields, has been given permission despite concerted opposition. Developer Richborough Estates can now go ahead with its outline proposals for the houses, which will significantly enlarge the village.

Residents have long opposed the plans insisting that the village infrastructure will not be able to cope. YOUNGSTERS from Wyche Primary and Nursery School took part in an Aspirations Day earlier this month. The children were given a career taster and learnt skills in beauty, the food industry, public services and design. Many Nantwich businesses eagerly offered the children experiences in their sector, inviting them in for taster sessions and hands-on activities. A school spokesman said: “We wanted to ensure that local businesses were involved in our project so that the

children could clearly see what career opportunities were available to them on their doorstep. “We were very lucky to have a fantastic response from so many local businesses, which meant that we could offer the children a wide range of career choices. “Thanks go to Nantwich Museum, St Mary’s Church, Clewlows Butchers, Chatwins, Hall Smith Whittingham Solicitor, Reaseheath College, McCarthy’s Hairdressing Salon and Nantwich Fire Brigade.”

A NANTWICH man has admitted fraudulently claiming more than £8,000 in benefits while secretly drawing on his company pension. Jack Parker, 63, of School Bank, Wybunbury, admitted two charges of failing to notify of a change in his circumstances that would affect his entitlement to housing benefit, Council Tax benefit and jobseekers’ allowance. Magistrates heard that Parker claimed housing benefit and Council Tax benefit from May 2011 and jobseekers’ allowance from July 2012, on the basis that

he was on a low income. Investigators from the council’s benefit fraud team found that he had started to receive an occupational pension. Parker failed to report this change and continued to receive benefits he was not entitled to, totalling £8,168. Magistrates gave Parker a two-year conditional discharge and ordered him to pay costs of £200 The council, which brought the prosecution, will now seek full repayment of the overpaid benefits. Councillor David Brown, “Benefit fraud is simply wrong and inexcusable behaviour.”

NANTWICH’S Webb House Furnishers is celebrating its 40th anniversary. Howard Webb set up the family business in Crewe in 1974 before moving to the current Grade 2 listed building in Mill Street in Nantwich in 1994.

THE Children’s Society shop in Nantwich is staging a 1950’s style party on September 20 at the Parish Hall from 3.15pm. The group is also in desperate need of volunteers. Visit the Beam Street store for more details.

THE first in a series of talks accompanying the Nantwich and the First World War exhibition at the museum will take place at 3pm on August 20. Local historian Mark Potts will speak on WWI and the cost to Nantwich families. Tickets are £3.

POLICE have arrested a man from London on suspicion of fraud following an incident in Nantwich. At around 4pm on August 1 a 58-year-old lady in Nantwich received a call from a man claiming to be a police officer from the Metropolitan Police. The man claimed that he was investigating the lady′s bank and required her to withdraw £9,000 as part of the investigation. After the lady had withdrawn the money the man then attended the victim’s address and

collected the cash, claiming it was required as part of the inquiry. After handing over the money, the lady became suspicious and decided to call the police, which was when she discovered that she had been defrauded. Later on the same day, after information was received from a member of the public and enquiries by officers, a 21-year-old man was arrested in Crewe. The 21-year-old, from London, was arrested on suspicion of fraud; he is currently helping officers with their enquiries.

ENTERPRISING Nantwich pupils have raised £2,400 for charity. Each class at St Anne’s Catholic Primary School was given a £5 budget, with which to raise as much as possible. The money will be split between St Luke’s Hospice and Macmillan Cancer Support.

by JONATHAN WHITEA WILLASTON teenager is travelling to Tanzania on work experience. Rhiannon Owen, aged 16, has been busy raising funds for the three-week placement in East Africa. She will shadow medics in paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology. She said: “My mother is a nurse at Macclesfield District General Hospital and I would like to follow her lead and pursue a medical career. “It will be my first visit

to Africa and I am eager to experience first-hand clinical medicine and surgery.” Mum Carol added: “She’s had her heart set on studying medicine since she was very young. “Hopefully the placement in Tanzania will be one step nearer to a career in medicine.” The Nantwich and Acton Grammar School Foundation has paid for her flights while Rhiannon has also worked hard to raise funds herself towards the £3,000 total cost.

NANTWICH Town Council has awarded a capital grant of more than £13,000 to The Cat Community Radio. The money will fund the installation of the station’s brand new FM transmitter in readiness for its FM transmission date. Paul Simpson, technical director for The Cat, said: “Since we received notification of the licence award from OFCOM in February this year, we’ve been making steady headway in getting our funding, advertising and sponsorship building up in the local area, and

attracting new members. “We know that by going FM we will be offering wider support and access to local community groups and events than ever before when we were an internet station. “We are a not for profit self-funding organisation, and like many groups and societies in the area, we look to fund in whatever way possible whether it be roadshows at community

events or through local support from business via advertising and sponsorship. “We would like to thank Nantwich Town Council wholeheartedly for the funding.”

DABBERS boss Danny Johnson says the positive pre-season performances need to be ‘embraced but channeled’. Nantwich Town prepare to start the new campaign on the back of a draw against AFC Telford and a 3-1 win against Northwich Victoria. But the gaffer said: ‘Its only preseason. “We still have lots of work to do and it’s vital the players don’t get carried away with themselves and they must keep their feet on the ground. “I have no doubt this group has the quality to compete with much tougher sides but it’s when we play lesser opposition I have my concerns. “That’s more of a mental thing though and hopefully the likes of Steve Phillips, Steve Jones and Adam Jones, lads with lots of experience will help us through in those

games. ‘I am obviously very satisfied with how things are going and the squad looks quite strong with an exceptional mix of aggression, skill, technique, youth and experience. “We are in a much better position than at any time last season and with a much more rounded group of players. “I am really looking forward to the season now, we have all had a good break, the batteries are recharged and we are ready to go.” Nantwich Town kick off their 130th anniversary season with a short trip to Buxton on Saturday August 16. The side then have back-to-back home games against Skelmersdale United and Stamford before visiting the picturesque Irwell Valley to take on promoted Ramsbottom United on August Bank Holiday Monday.
