VOLUNTEERS are being sought to help run a new com-munity hall in rural Nant-wich. Stapeley Parish Council is taking over the lease of the new community hall on Pear Tree Field from Cheshire East Council. A parish council spokesman said: “The council is currently reviewing the legal situation regarding the lease. “But in the meantime, we can start to put in place a small working group of volunteers who are willing to commit to managing and operating the hall. “This is a community asset and it is important that local residents support it - use it or lose it!” The spokesman added: “We need a band of volunteers who can take on this responsibil-ity.” Anyone who can help should email parish clerk Carol Jones at [email protected].

REASEHEATH College stu-dents glammed it up as they raised funds for charity at a Hollywood themed ball. The ball was one of many fun activities during last week’s RAG Week at the Nantwich college. Organised by students Katie Thorburn, Ben Lloyd, Jamie Harrison, Katie McRoberts and Jen Taylor, the ball was attended by almost 200 stu-dents and raised some £600 in

ticket sales alone. The event featured an ‘Os-cars’ style presentation to the best dressed students. VIP tickets for the ‘V’ Festi-val were among raffle prizes and partygoers danced the night away to a disco with live DJ. The money raised will go to The Oliver King Foundation, set up in memory of a 12 year old who died due to Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome.

HUNDREDS of pupils were evacuated from a Nantwich school last month after a ‘chemical incident’. Three fire engines, a haz-ardous chemicals unit, three police cars and a number of ambulances were called to Brine Leas School on Audlem Road around 11.15am fol-lowing reports of a ‘chemical incident’. A Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “The incident, which is believed to have been caused by fumes from a science experiment,

happened in the chemistry lab. “Pupils were evacuated while firefighters wearing special-ist equipment dealt with the incident. “A number of people were checked over at the scene for the effects of inhaling a chemi-cal however no one required further treatment.” Deputy headteacher Simon Ascroft said the incident had involved chemicals in the sci-ence prep room and the school had followed normal safety procedures by evacuating.

TRAINEE gardener Rhiannon Harris proved her green-fingered credentials after coming fourth in the finals of the Young Horticulturalist of the Year awards. Reaseheath College student Rhiannon, 28, scored highly but was pipped at the post at the prestigious competition, held at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Edinburgh. She is on the National Trust Academy training pro-gramme and studies for horticultural qualifications at Reaseheath. Rhiannon said: “I value working for the National Trust and the efforts it makes to preserve the nation’s historic houses and gardens for the enjoyment of the public.”

Rhiannon’s flower power(cont. from front)indoor and outdoor markets and the public toilets in the market, in Barony Park and on Snow Hill car park. Nantwich councillor Arthur Moran told The Dabber: “I have always been very much in favour of this happening. “This will hopefully safeguard the future of the Civic Hall for years to come. “I am sure the management team will have some excellent thoughts on how to take the venue forward. “It will of course be used for the community but I’m sure we will see some fresh ideas.” Cllr Moran also said that he was pleased that Crewe residents had voted in favour of having their own town council. He added: “We have always had a very active council in

Nantwich and a place the size of Crewe needs to have it’s own authority. “Clearly with the transfer of facilities our town council is going to be taking on a lot more responsibility in the future.” Audlem councillor Rachel Bailey added: “We are pleased to note that Nantwich Town Council is taking a sensible, phased approach to the hand-over of assets and services. “These are major buildings and features of the town and all handovers must be care-fully handled. “I am confident that the Civic Hall will be successfully managed by the town council and believe it is best placed to run the facility for the benefit of the people of Nantwich.” Cheshire East council leader Michael Jones said: “This is great news for Nantwich.” • What do you think? NANTWICH’S Olympic hope-ful Hayley Jones has swapped the running track for the catwalk to raise a charity’s profile. Sprinter Hayley, 23, a former student at Malbank High School, made it through the regional finals of the Miss England competition. She came a respectable fifth out of 20 finalists at the con-test in Preston but admitted she felt more at home in train-ers than in heels. Hayley said: “I’m really bet-ter off on the track! “The other contestants were constant smiles and practised poses - it wasn’t really for me. “I certainly won’t be chang-ing careers anytime soon!” Hayley is now in training in the hope of being selected for the London Olympics. She said: “To qualify I need to come in the top three in the trials on June 24. “I’m looking to qualify in the 200m and if I make that I should make the 4x100.”

During the Miss England com-petition Hayley underwent a three-hour interview and rehearsals before rounds in eveningwear, summerwear, sportswear and ‘eco-wear’. During the contest she raised over £100 for the Beauty with a Purpose Charity. Hayley, who has just com-pleted a maths degree, added: “When raising the money I got involved with the primary group at the athletics club,

and now I hope to fill my spare time coaching and help-ing to get kids into athletics. “I wanted to tackle the issue of girls dropping out of sports for the fear that they will ‘end up looking like a boy’ etc.” Hayley added: “I have seen first hand that this is a big problem in athletics and so I hope to show the girls that that you can be active and still be beautiful and do all the girly things as well.”

Weezel Diesel features the char-ismatic singer Rich Evans playing his homemade experimental guitars (double neck electro/acoustic cigar box guitar). Ed Sullivan plays powerful blues harp that replaces traditional ‘lead’ guitar parts. Tosh brings various drums rang-ing from a full kit, cocktail kit and even a cajon - a wood shipping crate and Ned Conway unleashes the Weezel Boom-Boom, aka the Double Bass. Weezel Diesel’s appeal tran-

scends many different audiences including rock n’ rollers, old time blues and country hounds, folkie types and everyone in between. They attribute this to the very diverse musical tastes of the four members. Rich is a fan of outlaw poets such as Johnny Cash, Steve Earle and British blues rock legends such as the Rolling Stones and Peter Green.

Ed’s influences include Sonny Boy Williamson and Nine Below Zero, Tosh blasts the Ramones, Bad Brains and Led Zeppelin on his ipod and new recruit Ned is a folkie who also rocks out to AC/DC with a very diverse and large record collection. Local favourites Gambler return to The White Horse on Saturday June 16 with Green Hyenas on June 23.

Dear Editor Can I congratulate you on the format of the Dabber. I was interested in the arti-cle ‘Storm in a Tea cup’. It is an inevitability that a town like Nantwich will at-tract the multiples because of its growth over the last few years, we cannot keep them out but must learn to compete with them. My wife and I have been running our business next to the post office for 25 years and were the first in Nantwich to introduce Cappuccinos and Espressos, along with conti-nental breads and pastries baked on the premises. When we started, there where only three cafes in Nantwich, now I believe there will be in excess of 20 after Nero open. The advantage that the independents have over the

multiples is flexibility and bet-ter customer service than any chain operation can offer. Yes we will lose some of the visitor element who look out for recognisable brands such as Nero but I would rather see a town full of operating shops than empty ones. I hope for Nero’s sake, that they have done their home-work, the site that they have taken has very high fixed costs before they consider staffing it, added to which Nantwich is very much a commuter town these days with the major portion of the working population leaving the town on a daily basis. It is also poorly served for the motor car and offers no park and ride facility such as small towns like Ludlow do successfully.

Peter McCormick

Town’s cafe culture Dear sir,

I read with interest your article about the future of in-dependent shops in Nantwich. While I think most people want to see a wide range of different outlets in the town centre, offering choice to cus-tomers, I think it is the small traders who create the town’s identity. The fact that Nantwich has such a vibrant town centre speaks highly of the independ-ent shops available. I read in The Dabber that Marks and Spencer are com-ing to the town and I’m sure that not many people would oppose this. But it is about striking a balance, no one wants an homogenised town centre dominated by the usual chains and franchises. If small towns such as Nant-wich are to thrive, it is vital they offer something different. Jane WilliamsManor Road

Thriving on difference

Dear sirs, I do believe Nantwich is in danger of losing its very heart if these housing companies and multi-national chains are not stopped. I read in your publication that the council is allowing yet another coffee shop into the town centre which will surely mean the end of the smaller independents. Steve Lawson is right, Nantwich must be reaching saturation point just like we are with all the extra housing that is on the horizon. Nantwich must be protected for future generations.

NANTWICH residents have responded to a plea by the Cheshire Wildlife Trust for sightings of one of the UK’s rarest creatures. The trust has since received more than a hundred sight-ings of water voles - the country’s fastest declining mammal. Experts have now observed several of the secretive creatures - who often give their presence away with a distinctive ‘plop’ as they enter the water - on parts of the Shropshire Union Canal, near Nantwich. This particular group of voles was not known to the project team prior to the recent news story. Additional indications of the water voles’ presence such as territorial droppings, access holes and even a sought-after nesting area have also encour-aged the research team. It is now hoped that many of those who have sent in their records will become local guardians of the water voles

and monitor their presence as part of an ongoing project. Andrea Powell, project officer with the Cheshire Wildlife Trust, said: “Our phone and e-mail has been buzzing with people generously offer-ing their time and sending us records of water voles to follow-up. “In one case, a reported sighting was backed-up by a site visit soon after, where up to eight voles were seen on one stretch of the canal near

Nantwich. “What is important now is that we are able to maintain these regular observations with the help of local volun-teers.” Andrea added: “It’s been particularly encouraging to see them using areas that are not typical water vole habi-tat, which shows how they can adapt to life on modified waterways when more natural bank reinforcements are used.”

Top of the plopsST Luke’s Hospice is holding its annual Midnight Walk on Saturday June 9 from Crewe to Nantwich. The walk is the biggest fun-draiser for the Hospice which needs to raise £6,500 a day to keep running. More than a thousand ladies have registered to do the walk on behalf of the hospice. If anyone sees them out training or on the night, people can donate by texting LUKE02 £1 to 70070. To donate £2, £5 or £10, just change the wording of the text, ie LUKE02 £5.

AROUND the town itself, the feral pigeon population some-times attracts a Peregrine. I have seen this scenario several times especially dur-ing late summer early winter periods. How can anyone forget the starling’s roosts which have built up in the town centre over the last few winters? A million plus birds have been noted and although their displays before roosting can be impressive, it’s not without controversy with droppings causing not only damage but are obviously unsightly and smelly. These roosts often attract predators with Peregrine (pictured), Sparrow Hawk and even Tawny Owls.

Waxwings can turn up in urban Nantwich in some win-ters depending on numbers nationwide. If there’s an influx of birds, you may be lucky enough to find some feeding on Cotone-aster Berries around the town. This species originates from Scandinavia and even Russia and quite often you see them perched in the tree tops giving their distinctive trilling call. Other unusual and rare sightings have been made at Little Auk at Nantwich Lake, Bittern on Waterlode, and flyovers at Brine Lea’s. These included a Wryneck Which in a garden in Prince Edward Street, a ring necked Parakeet seen by the aque-duct at the bottom of Welsh Row and a Red Kite seen during the spring/summer of 2008 often over fields by Sainsbury’s supermarket and

the by-pass. But the most amazing sight-ings must go to a birder who late one spring evening had a Night Jar - a summer migrant normally associated with heath land - flying around St Mary’s Church in the middle of the town centre. If ever there was a case for a lost disorientated bird then this was it. But it just demonstrates when it comes to nature there are no fixed rules and any-thing can just about turn up anywhere.

Other bird species seen around urban Nantwich in-clude: Black Headed Gull (pic-tured above); Common Gull; Herring Gull; Greater Black Headed Gull; Lesser Black Headed Gull; Woodpigeon; Collared Dove; Pied Wagtail; Dunnock; Robin; Wren; Song Thrush; Mistle Thrush; Black-bird; Magpie; Jackdaw; Car-rion Crow; House Sparrow; Green Finch and Linnet. Fly-over’s have included meadow Pipit regularly dur-ing the early autumn period and Sky Lark occasionally. Recent sightings in 2012 include eight Goosand-ers at Nantwich Lake and seven Golden Plover in a field nearby. Also spotted were a Shovel-ler Drake, Mandarin Drake, a Little Grebe on the River Weaver in January, a Coot on Nantwich Lake and Osprey over Nantwich in March and Oystercatcher by Nantwich Lake in April. HUGE crowds are expected at the fifth-annual Cholmondeley Pageant of Power which takes place later this month. Now one of the area’s biggest attractions, the three-day event (June 15-17) showcases explosive movement on land, water and in the air, with powerboat action on the Mere, military combat power dem-onstrations and aerobatic dis-plays including the Breitling Wingwalkers. Over 150 historic and mod-ern racing cars will take to the 1.2-mile circuit along with motorbikes during the event,

which was moved from its tra-ditional July slot as organis-ers look for better weather. New for this year is the Autocar Supercar Paddock featuring cars such as the Bu-gatti Veyron, Ariel Atom and the Lambourghini Aventador. James Bond fans will be left shaken and stirred on seeing the thrilling line up of original Bond cars including the Aston Martin V12, BMW Z8, as well as the Ice Dragster from Die Another Day. Sponsors Top Gear Magazine will display cars featured on the series while also in the

Top Gear Zone, their huge F1 Simulator is said to be the best in the world. “Every Pageant has been a remarkable success and we have seen year on year increases in visitor numbers, sponsors, displays and attrac-tions. “Get involved and come and try a multitude of activities,” explained an event spokesper-son. “Take a ride in helicopters, powerboats, rally cars, tanks and 4 x 4’s.” For ticket information, visit www.cpop.co.uk.

ORGANISERS intend to make this year’s Nantwich Food and Drink Festival a real tourist attraction. New chairman Deborah Robb has revealed exciting plans for the 2012 event which takes place over the weekend of September 14-16, including a potential celebrity appear-ance. “It’s not just about food but showcasing the whole of Nant-wich as a visitor destination and doing our bit to support the town’s economic prosper-ity,” she said. “There will be a few surpris-es this year and possibly even a celebrity involved. “We will have two huge marquees, one on the town square and the other behind St Mary’s Church as well as the Civic Hall. “It’s a special year and we plan to turn the town red, white and blue with bunting and create a real buzz.” For more information, visit www.nantwichfoodfestival.co.uk

RECORD-breaking crowds flocked to Reaseheath College last month to join in the col-lege’s 90th birthday celebra-tions.

The Nantwich campus was packed with thousands of visi-tors, who enjoyed hundreds of activities and displays on offer as part of the Reaseheath

Family Festival. Among the show’s highlights were guest appearances from Rico and Sultan, two horses who played the star role of ‘Joey’ in War Horse, the blockbuster film set in World War I. The horses were part of The Devil’s Horsemen stunt team, who performed a daring display of trick riding at the college’s equestrian centre. Other attractions included the Clwyd Axemen and the Meerkats Massive, a gang of six foot meerkats which scur-ried around campus. Families also enjoyed sheep shearing, a farmers’ and craft market, student horse riding displays, tours of the college’s zoo and a fun dog show. Other activities included cheese and cake making, engineering displays and the chance to try out the indoor climbing wall and outdoor high ropes course. Younger visitors enjoyed an old time funfair, miniature train rides, face painting and local ice cream . Principal Meredydd David said: “As well as being a shop window for the skills of our students, the festival also makes a fantastic contribution to our local community and has become a not to be missed event for many people.”

THOUSANDS of petrol heads will visit Chris Evans’ Car-Fest North at Cholmondeley Castle, near Nantwich, this autumn. The sold-out festival of cars, music and food will take place in the castle grounds on Sep-tember 8 and 9. Popular DJ Evans commit-ted himself to the event after the venue was pitched to him by Cheshire East Council. Headline music acts Razor-light and Texas have already been lined up to perform. Cllr Wesley Fitzgerald, Cheshire East Council leader, said: “This is marvellous news for Cholmondeley and Chesh-ire East as a whole. “The council wrote to Chris Evans recommending Chol-mondeley Castle as the ideal venue in the north for this prestigious music and motor-ing festival. “And I am delighted that he has enthusiastically embraced our suggestion. “I am sure CarFest North will be a memorable weekend and help raise valuable funds for the event’s chosen charity, Children In Need. “It will also be a boost to the borough’s tourism, bringing many thousands of visitors into Cheshire East.”

A spokesman for CarFest North said: “Chris wouldn’t put his name to something which didn’t have some of the best cars in the world, amaz-ing food and a host of great music and family entertain-ment.” For further information visit http://www.carfestnorth.

THE leader of Nantwich Town Council, John Lewis took a day off from politics to win the 19th Reaseheath Open Vin-tage Day, a tournament run for veteran golfers by sports turf students. Some 37 players over the age of 65 contested the Stableford

competition, which was held on the college’s commercial nine hole golf course in Nant-wich. Runner up was Bryan Glenn of Wistaston, who also won the putting competition, while best ladies’ score went to Fay Stubbings of Willaston.

All are members of Rease-heath Golf Club. John Lewis said: “It was a wonderful day. Many thanks from all of us to the student green keepers. “They did a great job in pre-paring the course to give us the best playing conditions.”

DESPITE poor weather condi-tions all the celebrities turned up for a charity match in Nantwich last month. Stars from Emmerdale, Hollyoaks, Coronation Street, Eastenders and Shameless turned out to play Barry Donegan’s All Star Charity XI football team to help raise money for the Wingate Special Childrens Trust based in Wrenbury. More than 600 people came down to support the event and cheer on the stars from the TV

soaps. The score was 4-3 to the soap stars, with goals from actor Dean Wainwright and Matt Lapinskas from Eastenders, who scored the winning goal five minutes from the end. Goal scorers from the All Stars included David Dunn from the penalty spot, Paul Cronshaw and Barry Don-egan. Organiser Barry said: “I would like to thank everyone who came to support this game despite the rain and the

wind. “The match raised raised over £1,600.” He added: “I would like to say a special thanks to those who sponosred the event - Mike from Howard Worth, who was the ball sponsor, Cobi Batemen the mascot sponsor, Nicky from the Cheese Warehouse who was the Man of the Match spon-sor , Michelle from ESTC, the warm-up T shirt sponsor and the main sponsor Dave Dunn from Toshiba.”

NANTWICH CC face an up-hill task to retain their ECB Premier League crown. Looking for a hat-trick of ti-tles, the defending champions have struggled for consistency during the first part of the season. Last month’s 41-run defeat at rivals Neston was their third out their first six fix-tures. Luke Camden starred with the bat, firing 52 as Neston chalked up 206 from their 53 overs. Jimmy Warrington con-tinued his impressive form, claiming 5-73 as The Dabbers fancied their chances. But Chris Finegan did all the damage with the ball as he took 6-41 in 13 decisive overs as Nantwich were all out for 165. Leading batsman Ray Doyle was the only man to offer any serious resistance with a knock of 60. Nantwich travel to Mac-clesfield on Saturday, June 9, entertain Widnes on June 16, visit Urmston on June 23 and welcome Toft on June 30.

NANTWICH Town have their sights set on a mouth-water-ing clash with Premiership giants Manchester United. Chairman Jon Gold revealed talks about a potential friend-ly at the Weaver Stadium have been positive as the Dab-bers hope to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the two clubs meeting in the FA Youth Cup. Back in November 1952 the emerging Busby Babes beat Nantwich 23-0 – the biggest ever victory recorded in the competition. “United have been very posi-

tive,” explained Gold. “Paul McGuinness (Academy manager) is keen to send a side if he can.

“They are waiting until their fixtures are out and will then see what they can schedule in so it won’t be pre-season.” A former assistant man-ager with United, Nantwich

Town club president Frank Blunstone is set to be a guest of honour along with Ronnie Cope who featured for both sides. The Dabbers are trying to trace surviving members of the side that featured in the original match. If you can help, please con-tact the club on 01270 621771 or email [email protected] • Fans favourite Michael Lennon has left Nantwich Town for NPL Premier rivals Hednesford Town. The 30-year-old’s departure

will come as a major surprise to some supporters as Dab-bers boss Jimmy Quinn looks to freshen up his squad over the summer. Only the fourth man to hit 100 goals for Nantwich since World War Two, Lennon leaves prolific boots to fill af-ter four years with the club. “I would like to say a mas-sive thank you for all the support I’ve received and I’m saddened to leave,” he said. “The four years at the club have given me some of the best and worst moments in my career.
