TORRENTIAL downpours failed to dampen the spirits of revellers who turned out to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee in Nantwich. Crowds lined the streets in the town centre to mark the occasion. Relentless rain eventually forced the festivities indoors at the Civic Hall where fami-

lies enjoyed entertainment from Nantwich Young Voices, performances by X Academy and a rock and roll fancy dress competition. There was also a Punch and Judy Show, face painting, family activities and music from Stapeley Broad Lane Primary School’s band. Nantwich Mayor Graham

Fenton, Crewe and Nantwich MP Edward Timpson and the Queen’s Cheshire representa-tive Lord Lieutenant David Briggs were among those attending. Nantwich in Bloom organis-ers also unveiled a unique Flaming Floral Beacon in the bed behind the Cenotaph in Nantwich Square.

A VACANT car park in Nantwich has become home to travellers caravans. Around a dozen caravans moved onto the car park of the former Focus DIY store off Beam Heath Way at the start of June. But officers at Cheshire East Council say they currently do not have the power to remove the travellers. A council spokesman con-firmed the authority is aware of the travellers site and monitoring the situation. But he said that because the site does not infringe on the highway, it is the landlord or managing agent’s immediate responsibility to obtain any removal orders. The council will contact the landowner and if there is subsequently still no resolu-tion and the authorities be-lieve there is a legal infringe-ment, criminal proceedings

could be brought against the travellers. The spokesman told The Dabber they were also provid-ing plastic bags for the travel-lers to keep the site tidy. Penny Butterill, councillor for Nantwich North and West, said: “Of course I can under-stand people’s concerns, but unfortunately there is not a lot we can do. “They are on private land and it is the responsibility of the land owner. Our hands are tied.” A local businessman, based on the neighbouring Nantwich Business Park, added: “We don’t understand how this has been allowed to happen. “It is not a field. Why didn’t the local authority ensure that the car park was locked and secured?”• What do you think? Send your views to [email protected].

TWO intrepid teams from Reaseheath College overcame personal challenges to raise cash for its RAG charities. The college’s Greg Otto, Lionel Smith, Nick Kennedy, Chris Mann and Natalie Gascoyne completed their own Olympics-style triathlon. The four day challenge saw the team cycling 110 miles across the width of England from Whitehaven to Whitley Bay, kayaking the 21 mile length of Loch Ness and climbing Ben Nevis. Said Natalie: “It was great fun and a great achievement.

The main problem was trying to find something as good as last year’s challenge!” There was further action in Scotland as a second team consisting of college princi-pal Meredydd David, Rob Brown, Glyn Ferriday, Lesley Innes, Dave Morgan, Beccy Glassford, Holly Borowski and Barry Okane, took on the Three Peaks Challenge. Money raised will go to the Oliver King Foundation and the North West Air Ambu-lance. The total raised so far this year stands at £6,500.

THE £1.4m makeover of Nantwich Swimming Baths has been given the green light by planning bosses. Cheshire East Council had secured funding to bring the pre-war 1935 Wall Lane com-plex into the 21st century. The project has now moved a step closer although ques-tions still remain over when work will begin as the scheme enters the bidding process. Conditions attached to the planning permission indicate the work must begin within the next three years. Councillor Rod Menlove said: “Cheshire East Council is delighted that the planning application to revamp Nant-wich swimming baths has now been approved. “We hope to realise the full potential of the facility and make it fit for the future. “We are currently concluding the standard works’ procure-

ment process which can take a reasonable length of time as EU legislation must be met.” The money will be spent on the ageing changing rooms, showers and toilets to create a ‘changing village’ – a unisex changing area with cubicles and individual family chang-ing rooms. There are also plans to create a new entrance and enhanced fitness facilities as well as improved roofing, paved surfaces, a new boiler, pool filters and air handling unit. To minimise disruption to local residents, the building work will be restricted to be-tween 8am and 6pm Monday to Friday, and 9am until 2pm on Saturdays. There will be no Sunday or bank holiday construction. The outdoor pool was closed temporarily last month for es-sential repairs to water pipes.

HUNDREDS of people turned out in force to enjoy last month’s 33rd World Worm Charming Championships in Willaston. Over 140 plots were taken as competitors from as far afield as Australia, Thailand and Holland tried to vibrate as many worms out of the ground as possible. Adding a touch of fun to the event, a group attempted the

challenge in fancy dress while on a stag weekend as Willas-ton School Percussion Band provided entertainment. The Caravan Club tag team claimed the Champion-ship trophy for Most Worms (419), four-year-old Evie May Benbow was named Young-est Wormer and Carol Owen scooped the Heaviest Worm accolade (5.62g). THE organisers of the Nantwich Family Fun Day have been forced to abandon the festival because of the beurocratic workload. The event had become a firm favourite on the town’s calendar attracting hundreds of families to the Barony Park each July. But the association’s commit-tee made the difficult decision to call time on the event at a recent meeting. Chairman Keith Cafferty said: “The decision came down the vast amount of paperwork involved. “There are so many forms for health and safety, risk asses-ment, public liability and so on that it was just not possible to cope with. “Not only that, but we had to comply with regulations laid down by Cheshire East. “We also had to get each per-former to fill out these forms, which we spend an awful lot of time chasing up. “We did try to recruit more volunteers to help with the

work, but nobody wanted to get involved. “The problem is that if some-one has an accident we could be up for manslaughter. That is the kind of responsibility placed on the organisers. “The Government’s Eric Pickles said he was going to make it easier to put on com-munity events, instead it has only gotten harder. “We have always done this for the communtiy, not for any financial or personal gain. “In a way it has become a

victim of its own success.” The organisers are now offer-ing one-off donations to local charities and schools. Mr Cafferty said: “We have always tried to have a year’s funds in advance in case any-thing should happen. “It is fitting that these assets should now benefit the com-munity.” To apply for a donation email [email protected] or call 01270 842560. The closing date is 5pm on Friday, July 6.

COME AND SEE US AT THE NANTWICH SHOW

Show time THE Nantwich Show comes to town once bagain on Wednes-day July 25. And organisers have their work cut out as they try to top last year’s record turn-out of more than 36,000 visitors. The agricultural show and cheese awards have become the biggest one-day event in the UK. This year there will be some 12 hours of continuous ring displays, including Heavy Horses, Cattle, Sheep and Dogs. There will be a vastly in-creased Countryside Pursuits Arena and music throughout the day on the Mornflake bandstand. Amongst the main attrac-tions will be the Bolddog Lings Stunt Display Team who will be returning to Nant-wich with two performances in the Main Ring After record entries of 3,730, from some 26 countries in 2011, the cheese complex will again be increased in size to over 73,000 sq ft.

Show secretary Adrian Lawrence said: “We will also see a new Cookery Demon-stration Theatre with three of the biggest names showing off their cookery skills, and a new Education Area showing the production of cheese from the animal to the making and the final products. “A new Horse Ring has also been created within the show-ground and this will bring the Ridden Hunters and Cobs

right to the forefront.” Celebrity chefs will be stag-ing demonstrations in the International Cheese Pavilion, featuring Jean-Christophe Novelli at 9.30am and 1.30pm, James Martin at 10.30am and 2.30pm and Gino D’Acampo 11.30am and 3.30pm. Tickets for this are limited to 200 per 45 minute perfor-mance. For more details visit www.nantwichshow.co.uk.

THE Nantwich Transport Festival survived last month despite the downpours. A waterlogged Barony Park forced the event to move to the car park at Nantwich Town Football Club. There was a wide range of classic and vintage cars, motorbikes, trucks and a fire engine, along with several food and drink outlets. Vehicles on show included Rolls Royce, VW, Austin Morris, Ford, MG, Triumph, Vauxhall, Fiat and Norton. They were represented by numerous owners clubs.

No washout

NANTWICH Museum is anticipating exciting times. A long-awaited report on the Kingsley Fields excavation has been published putting Nantwich on the map as a Roman town. Spokesman Graham Dodd said: “Plans are now being made to enable artefacts from the dig to be exhibited and so add another chapter to the history of the town.”

THE Nantwich Players will this month be performing the musi-cal Cabaret by John Kander and Fred Ebb. This is a real departure for the Players who don’t normally do fully fledged musicals. Director, Jerry Park, said: “This is quite a challenge in our limited playing area. “However, this production con-centrates on the drama - the menace and political back-ground of the story. “I think that the poster we have puts this over well – not a bowler hat or spangle in sight.” Taking the leading role of Sally

Bowles is student Laura Monk-house, who recently appeared in Salt of the Earth. She said: “I haven’t done any big singing roles before, but I think I have the voice for what is wanted here – a bit rough round the edges! “Sally Bowles has big ambi-tions, though is not a sophis-ticated person and is rather naive, so I think there are quite a few demands for me as an actor.” Tickets are on sale from the Nantwich Tourist Information Centre, priced £7. The show runs from July 13 to 21.

JIM Kirkpatrick and Heavy Weather promise to kick up a storm at the White Horse on Saturday, July 14. One of the must-see bands on the circuit, they deliver a mixture of hard-hitting blues and rock together with a selection of covers from the likes of Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin. Without doubt one of the town’s true musical leg-ends, Kirkpatrick has made appearances at major events including the V Festival and T in the Park. Touring Europe with FM and opening for Foreigner and Journey, he is also currently working on a project with former Whitesnake guitarist Bernie Marsden. Jim will be supporting Thin Lizzy with FM on a series of dates next month. Vavoom! (July 7) kick off live music every Saturday while the venue hosts its monthly jam night on Thursday, July 26.

Hard-hitting blues night EVER fancied being a secret

agent? The Crown Hotel hosts its fourth Murder Mystery Even-ing on Saturday, August 4. ‘Double ‘O’ Kill’ centres on a meeting of top government agents. Surely nothing can go wrong at such a prestigious event? If a murder was committed then how could the killer ever hope to escape, surrounded by the high echelons of the intelligence agencies? With Bond not on the guest list, step into his shoes and join the cast of comedy char-acters in the search for justice with interactive fun and games. Guests receive a complimen-tary drink on arrival (7.15pm) before a four-course meal (8pm) and the murder plot featuring professional actors. Prizes will be awarded to the best and worst sleuths before a disco starting at 11pm. Tickets are £35 or £325 for a table of 10. To book call 01270 625283 or visit www.crownho-telnantwich.com.

Dear sirs, I have read in your publica-tion that the town council will take over control of The Civic Hall, the market and public toilets. Councillors have said ‘this is great news for Nantwich’ But I ask where is the money going to come from? Surely all the extra funding will end up through the door

of the tax payers. Community use of The Civic must have dwindled in recent years and perhaps the venue should be in the hands of pri-vate operators who can make better use of it. I can see it going the way of the Lyceum in Crewe, where taxpayers prop it up. - Name and address supplied

Dear Editor, I would like to once again point out the lack of parking within the vicinity of Nant-wich Town Centre. With the amount of housing developments underway and major chains like M&S set to move in, this is a problem that is only going to get worse and worse in the future. When is someone going to do anything about it? Personally I’m finding it harder and harder to park which is making me consider shopping elsewhere in the future. Once again it seems Chesh-ire East hand out planning

permission at the drop of a hat without realising the con-sequences that we residents are forced to put up with. If nothing is done we will only end up with out of town retail parks that damage town centre trade.

- John Downs, Willaston

LOCAL heroine Charlotte Bradbury has set her sights on the Commonwealth Games after injury ended her Olympic hopes. The 17-year-old from Wil-laston was forced to with-draw from last month’s ASA National Swimming Champi-onships, quashing any chance of sneaking into the GB squad for London. It was a blow for Charlotte who made major waves by becoming the fastest 15-year-old in British history in 200m breaststroke. But the dedicated former Malbank School pupil wasn’t despondent; admitting Glas-gow in 2012 was always a more realistic target. “I suffered a slight neck in-jury and had Tonsillitis so the coach said I wasn’t fit enough to go,” she explained. “To be honest I don’t think I am ready yet because the

event is so massive. “I’ve only raced in Europe and it’s a world stage so I defi-nitely need more experience. “The Commonwealth Games has always been my target for my first big games and I’m hoping to continue progress-ing along the right lines to make it there. “It’s the ASA National Age Group championships this month and it’s an important event for me. I want to prove I am one of, if not the strongest in my age group.” An athlete on the Lloyds TSB Local Heroes pro-gramme, Charlotte has been swimming competitively since the age of eight. And she’ll always cherish her part in London 2012, having carried the Olympic Flame on its tour through Crewe. “For 300 yards, I was holding the Olympics in my hands,” she added.

NANTWICH Town can expect a bumper crowd when they take on newly-promoted neighbours Crewe Alexandra this month. Jimmy Quinn will pit his wits against former Dabbers boss Steve Davis in the pick of a tough schedule of pre-season matches. Well over 1,000 supporters are expected to turn out for the fixture at The Weaver Stadium on Saturday, July 21. The Dabbers also face League Two Port Vale and rel-egated Macclesfield as Quinn wants his squad firing on all cylinders for the big kick-off on August 18. “I’m delighted with the fix-tures we have been able to put together as nearly all are with

teams from a higher or similar level to us,” explained Quinn. “While enjoyable for our supporters, we’re planning a tough pre-season training re-gime to ensure we’re prepared as possible for August 18. “These games will provide a stern test and the ideal prepa-ration, especially with the new players we’ve brought in.” Former Alex winger Lewis Short, 22, has signed for Nantwich after helping North-wich Victoria finish second in Evo-Stick Premier Division, last season. Striker Mark Beesley is also on board while Mat Bailey and Darren Moss are among several to commit themselves to the club. “Lewis is a fabulous addi-

tion to the squad and someone I have been after for a long time,” added Quinn. “He will provide us with some exciting options as he loves to get forward and his throw-ins and crosses are first class. “I’m sure the supporters will be pleased to see him back after a loan spell here and will enjoy watching him play. “Mark has scored goals wherever he’s been and has bags of experience. “Bails and Mossy were both fantastic for us last season and it’s great news for the club.”
