NANTWICH floristry students have been learning some tips from a leading expert. Diane Fair, an international floral demonstrator for the National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies, gave a demonstration in Reaseheath College’s Old Hall. Diane, who is also a qualified floristry judge and an award winning competitor at local and national level, created six contemporary and traditional floral designs. She also gave students tips for their future careers. Students on both full time and leisure courses attended

the event, gaining first hand knowledge of how a professional demonstration is organised. This was the first time Diane had used a college as a venue, but not the first time she had visited the Nantwich campus. She previously launched her floristry career as a competitor at a Young Farmers Rally at the Nantwich agricultural college. Said Diane: “It was lovely to be joined by so many keen young people and a great chance to tell them about the many opportunities in the industry.”

NANTWICH Civic Hall has been preparing to ‘go geek’ after being stormed by Star Wars characters. Nantwich Mayor Andrew Martin joined in the fun as The East Midlands Garrison were out if force with a Shadow Trooper, Tusken Raider and Imperial Guard to launch the first ever comic-con event in Nantwich - Nanocon. Hundreds of sci-fi fanatics are expected to come through the doors of the Civic Hall event on Saturday November 7 from 10am to 5pm. Organiser Steve Howard said: “This is going to be a fantastic event with something for everyone.

“Alongside the Garrison which were out today, you can also expect to see super heroes and movie characters, a life-sized Lightning McQueen car, the Iron Man docking station, a Terminator display and get a chance to sit on the Games of Thrones iron throne.” The event also features a collectors market of stalls, selling a whole host of collectable goodies, hand made items, artwork and more. Cllr Martin said: “Nantwich Civic Hall hosts so many different events, it’s great to see all areas of the community catered for and I have no doubt this will be a very popular event.”

Clean teamLOCAL volumteers from Nantwich in Bloom and the Nantwich Litter Group have joined forces to help spruce up the town as North West in Bloom judging day took centre stage. Following a year of hard work from the Bloom volunteers, the Litter Group turned out in force for a final clean up in preparation for an eagerly anticipated floral competition. Team leader Joyce Webb, paid tribute to the work of ANSA, Cheshire East Council’s street cleansing team, who keep Nantwich looking good on a regular basis and to Nantwich in Bloom, who create such an attractive floral environment for residents and visitors. Volunteers also lent a hand at a recent town clean up event organised by Jeff Stubbs, chairman of Nantwich Civic Society, which included

weeding, washing plant containers and general tidying. A spokesman said: “Volunteers are all inspired by our wonderful town and in addition to planting, weeding and litter picking enjoy the social element of working together.” The teams are currently recruiting for more volunteers. North West in Bloom is the voluntary regional organisation that administers the Britain in Bloom competition in Cheshire. The aim of the competition is to encourage the improvement of our surroundings through the imaginative use of trees, shrubs, flowers and landscaping.

PHOTOGRAPHS featuring animals are proving a particular hit with visitors to the Nantwich Camera Club’s exhibition at the Nantwich Museum. The display runs until November 28 and features a diverse range of pictures from club members including pets and wildlife. Visitors are invited to nominate their favourite photograph and a number of

the prints are available for sale. The exhibition is accompanied by displays of vintage photographic equipment, photographic publications and photographs of Nantwich through the years from the museum’s archive. The Camera Club, which was formed in 1981, recently won the coveted Five Towns Monochrome Print Competition.

(cont. from front)criminal conviction. As part of that message, eight officers took part in ‘Operation Taro’ during ‘student night’ on September 29 and used passive drugs dog Reggie, a labrador, to sniff out anyone suspected of carrying an illegal substance. They began the operation at Reaseheath College’s campus before moving into the town centre. While hundreds of revellers were checked as they made their way to and from Nantwich’s bars and nightclubs, only three indications were made by Reggie. The three people were then searched but no drugs were found. Sergeant Ian Bennett, who led the operation, said: “People might not take drugs already but if they get approached by people selling illegal substances in the town then they might be tempted.” Police hope to carry out further drugs operations in the run up to Christmas.

Snap happyNANTWICH Mayor Andrew Martin is urging stall holders and bargain hunters to visit the Table Top Sale at Nantwich Civic Hall. On most Thursdays more than 40 stalls sell an array of items at the Civic, with doors opening from 8am until 12noon. Admission is free and to have a 12ft stall, already set up for you, costs £5. Cllr Martin said: “If you are thinking of sorting out your sheds, attics, garages and wardrobes, consider having a table top stall at the Civic, as one person’s rubbish is another person’s treasure!” A regular stall holder Ms Potter commented: “It’s great, I’ve met so many new people. I’d highly recommend it.”

LOCAL movie group Family Films @ 4 have been named as runners-up in the community category at th his year’s National Film Society Awards. The film project was awarded a distinction for its work in engaging the local community and working with a local primary school where pupils made their own short films. Geoff Etherton, the project’s co-ordinator said: “We are overwhelmed to be runners up and be awarded a distinction at the National Film Society Awards. “Our team of volunteers works incredibly hard to provide somewhere local and low cost where families can watch films on the big screen. “This award recognises that work at a national level, in engaging both audience and volunteers from the local community, for making a difference in the town, and in our collaborative work, especially with local schools. “We narrowly lost out to a great film society from Northern Ireland, so I think that makes us the best community film society in England!” The project was praised for its work in making a difference in the community.

LOCAL English students have been inspired to put pen to paper after receiving top poetry tips from a Nantwich poet. Nantwich Words & Music Festival volunteer Helen Kay visited the A-level group at South Cheshire College to raise the profile of the festival’s poetry competition amongst young people. Students were encouraged to practice their creativity and writing skills and enter the festival’s competition and Poetry Slam. Helen Kay said: “I hope that by speaking to the students, I have planted the seed of writing poetry. “I wish that I had started writing at the age of 18 because it’s a great age to start, particularly in the modern day of social media and the rise of Poetry Slams. “I tried to get the point across that writing poetry can be immensely therapeutic and the best way of venting your emotions.”

THE eighth Nantwich Words and Music Festival took place in the town this month. This year’s event featured headliners The Magic Numbers, Barbara Dickson and Gruff Rhys, pictured with Town Mayor Andrew Martin. The event was born in 2008, the brainchild of musician Nigel Stonier, strings player and conductor of Cheshire Sinfonia Clare Smith and singer Thea Gilmore. The trio aimed to develop a festival which brought into the town music, poetry, literature and theatre of a type not normally accessible locally. The festival has a policy of promoting original material and celebrating quality and individuality. So far famous names have included Athlete, Tim Burgess, The Lightning Seeds, Simon Armitage, John Bramwell, The Wonder Stuff, Mark Radcliffe, Fyfe Dangerfield and Eliza Carthy. HOUSING provider Wulvern has stepped in to help the Nantwich Foodbank with a donation of ‘bags for life’. The introduction of the 5p carrier bag charge had left the charity with dwindling supplies of second hand bags which they use to hand out food parcels. The canvas bags will be used by the foodbank to transport food from their Stapeley storeroom to clients’ homes. Last year the Foodbank fed 1,213 people and received 18 tonnes of donated food demonstrating that the need for local foodbanks has never been more apparent. Wulvern spokesman Ceris Esplen said: “Rising costs of food and fuel combined with static income, high unemployment and changes to welfare benefits mean that many people are struggling to put food on the table and causing more and more to come to Foodbanks for help. “Wulvern is pleased to be able to help.”

NANTWICH Town picked up their third draw in a row as they came from behind to share the points away at Workington AFC. The game finished 1-1 after Workington went ahead in the early stages from a stunning free-kick. But the Dabbers showed real resilience, hitting back in the second half with a goal by Josh Gordon (pictured). Phil Parkinson made four changes to the team that drew 2-2 against Matlock Town; Krystian Burzynski, Jon Moran, Josh Gordon and Josh Hancock replaced Terry Smith, Andy White, Darren Thornton and Matty Kosylo in the starting eleven. The deadlock was broken on 12 minutes when Workington won a free-kick 25 yards out. Tinnion stepped up and his dipping left-footed strike rocketed into the top left hand

corner of the Nantwich goal. It could have been two on 23 minutes when Jake Simpson found space on the left but Burzynski was able to get down fast enough to save the low shot with relative ease. On 43 minutes Nantwich almost equalised as Jamieson failed to deal with a long ball. Liam Shotton rounded him, taking the ball out wide, and then beat a defender before putting a cross in – Matt Bell had a go but his strike ended up in the arms of Jamieson. The Dabbers looked fired up as the second half started. After just two minutes Shotton had a chance to take the teams level; Bell played him through but Jamieson saved Shotton’s attempt from inside the box. The equaliser eventually came in the 65th minute. There was a bit of a scramble for the ball in the box before it

fell at Gordon’s feet. He saw his shot deflect into the back of the Workington net to bring the two teams level. Despite drawing three on

the bounce, Nantwich still sit fourth in the table.
