THE leader of Cheshire East Council is calling for the reunification of the county. Nantwich councillor Michael Jones wants to recreate a newly unified Cheshire County Council. The county authority ceased to exist on April 1 2009 as it was split into two unitary authorities - Cheshire West and Chester and Cheshire East. Existing borough councils such as Crewe and Nantwich, Congleton and Vale Royal were abolished. But Cllr Jones said a unified

county would be stronger and lead to savings for residents. Stressing the idea was his own personal view, he said: “Cheshire East Council was formed following Local Government Reorganisation, when Cheshire County Council was effectively carved into two. “The two authorities were made weaker as a result, yet mirror one another in terms of their people and aspirations. “It didn’t make much sense then and it still doesn’t! “Yes, Cheshire East as a local authority is a great success and I’m sure Cheshire

West would say the same about their council. “But the fact remains, it was a bad decision and the people weren’t behind it and I suspect many are still not. “What I’m calling for today is a review of our separated and divided local government as I set out my ambition for a unified Cheshire Council that serves the needs of all Cheshire residents. “A unified and strong Cheshire would reduce Council Tax liability for every household to the tune of around £100. “I want to throw open the

debate about ‘One Cheshire’! Yes, or no? “I think it’s got a great feel to it. What do residents think?” Email your views to [email protected].

Support is on hand with Wulvern’s Support Link Alarm - providing help at the touch of a button 24 hours a day, 365 days a year!

The alarm is simple and easy to use, if you get into difficulty such as a fall at home, by pressing the pendant a call is activated to summon the help you need.

We offer a number of levels of support, ranging from the basic Support Link Alarm and emergency response, to combining wellbeing visits from our Supported Living Team.

I was in the garden last summer when I started with horrendous

pains in my chest. I was having a heart attack. Thankfully I was wearing my pendant and I raised the alarm for help. The advisor called for an ambulance which came quickly and also alerted my family who

soon joined me at the hospital. I know using my pendant saved my life!

COMMUNITY film club Nantwich Family Films @ 4 has been shortlisted for a national award. The project, which screens family films at the Methodist Church each month, has been chosen as a contender for Best New Society at the National Film Society Awards. Co-ordinator Geoff Etherton said: “This rewards the hard work and effort of our team of volunteers and the funding we were generously given.”

A SIMPLE piece of specialist equipment means 15-year-old Alex Grice from Nantwich is to get his independence. Alex, who lives in the Ravensmoor area, has Cerebral Palsy. Unable to walk, he is a full-time wheelchair user, relying on supportive seating to maintain his sitting balance. But the wheelchair he

currently uses is too heavy and bulky for him to use over any distance. That means he relies on family, friends and school staff to get around. But now Alex is to get a new wheelchair thanks to a charity partnership between The Morgan Foundation and Newlife Foundation for Disabled Children. Mum Linda said: “This

new wheelchair is lightweight yet sporty, so it will allow Alex to do so many more things for himself and not have to rely on other people all the time. “He will be able to get between classrooms at school more quickly and the extra freedom he will have means he will be able to join in more sporting activities.”

CUTTING edge sports science equipment at Reaseheath College is helping Crewe Alex’s first team squad. All first team players have visited the Nantwich college to use a new sports science laboratory. The squad went through

maximal fitness testing on a top-of-the-range medical treadmill. The data will be used by the club’s head of Sports Science and Conditioning Andy Franks to check the base level of fitness of each player and to set personalised programmes.

NANTWICH Town boss Danny Johnson has hit out at the intensive fixture list facing his part-time players. The Dabbers manager says that teams at this level being asked to play two games a week virtually every week until the end of November needs looking at and revamping He said: “It’s too much. “It’s absolutely ridiculous to ask players who play part time as well as working fulltime, who also have young families, to compete at this level of football to the standard that managers, club directors and supporters expect. “You can visually see the energy and intensity levels dropping game by game and that isn’t fair on the players but also the paying public who pay good money to watch

football. “We travelled to Stourbridge on a Tuesday evening which meant also asking lads to take half a day off work or leaving work early that some simply can’t do. “We then travelled to Kings Lynn which is an extremely long journey and energy sapping. “It’s simply not right, 24 teams in a league at this level is two but probably four clubs too, many especially with cup competitions thrown in. “Anyone who has played the game will agree that for the best interests of football at this level something needs to change. “We need to be driving up the quality of our football not overloading players with more games. “In the meantime we will just get on with it as I can’t see anything changing but I

firmly believe it needs looking at.” “The season hasn’t started as I would have liked and we are all bitterly disappointed at the manner in which we lost our first two games at Weaver Stadium and the game at Stourbridge. “We have been inept

defensively and we need to improve. “We shouldn’t be having to score three or four goals to win football matches. “It’s a long old season and our luck with injuries needs to change if we are to sustain a position in the top half of the table.”

HEAVY SCHEDULEDabbers boss bemoans intensity of start to new season
