Stretton Willaston Ltd appealed against the council’s refusal to grant planning permission for the houses on land to the south of Park Road. But Planning Inspector John Braithwaite has ruled that the appeal be dismissed. He said the the council’s under supply of housing is no ‘trump card’ that outweighs all other factors. In his report he stated: “The proposed development of up to 175 dwellings, 52 of which would be affordable houses, is a significant positive aspect of the scheme. “In this regard the development would meet the economic and social roles of sustainability. The housing proposed would, furthermore, contribute to redressing the under supply of housing land in the council area.” But he said the fact Cheshire East didn’t have enough housing did not mean that outweighed all other factors. He went on to say: “The under supply of housing in the council area is not a trump card that can be assumed to outweigh all other considerations. “It is a significant material consideration but must be weighed against the harm that would be caused.” “The harm that would be caused to the character and visual amenity of the area and through the loss of best and most versatile agricultural land does not significantly and demonstrably outweigh the under supply of housing land.” The inspector also ruled the plans would result in erosion of the Wistaston and Nantwich Green Gap. He said that the harm caused by the significant erosion of the Green Gap, together with the other factors, ‘significantly and demonstrably outweighs the contribution that the development would make to redressing the under supply of housing land in the council area’. He added: “The appeal is dismissed and planning permission is refused.” APPEAL DISMISSED Council wins fight to stop Willaston development “Erosion of the Green Gap” - John Braithwaite Spring lambs - p5

CHESHIRE East Council has won its battle to halt a 175 home development in Willaston. A SPECIAL birthday dance in Nantwich has raised some £3,000 for charity. Councillor Arthur Moran welcomed 270 guests to the Nantwich Civic Hall for a night of dance with Todd Miller and The Joe Loss Orchestra. The event, organised by the councillor, was a celebration of his 70th birthday, but he was also keen to raise money for three charities he is passionate about. The dance proved a huge success raising well in excess of £3,000, which is to be distributed between Leighton Hospital Prostate Support,

Ovarian Cancer and the Nantwich Mayor’s Charities. The timing of the event is fitting as March is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. Cllr Moran said: “This is a charity close to my heart. “I’m delighted that friends have supported me and that we can raise money and awareness for this deserving organisation.” “I have been working with Todd and the band for over 20 years now and it seemed right that they should be who I chose for my birthday celebrations. I am delighted with the success of the evening.”

Don’t Despair - Repair

A ROMAN coin hoard has been acquired by Nantwich Museum. Thought to date back to the second century, the hoard was found by a metal detectorist in Acton in 2014. The hoard comprises five silver denarii (equal to ten asses) deposited in a distinctive lead cone shaped container with a lead disc stopper which would have been held in place by a nail or pin. The container appears to be purpose-made, suggesting a ritual offering. All the denarii are of the Roman Emperor Septimus Severus who died in York in 211 and were issued between AD 194-198. Museum manager Denise

Courcoux said: “Acquisition of the hoard was made possible through a donation to the museum by Acton Parish Council, for which we are very grateful. “The hoard is currently on display at the British Museum in London until May when it will be passed to Nantwich to form a valuable part of its Treasure display.” The exhibition at the British Museum Hoards: the hidden history of ancient Britain looks at the stories behind the headlines of buried treasure. Explored are the reasons why ancient people placed precious objects underwater and in the ground since the Bronze Age. For more details visit www.nantwichmuseum.org.uk.

REASEHEATH student Paige Jepson and her border collie Poppy have beaten off strong competition to take an obedience title at Crufts. The 18-year-old took the top award in the Young Kennel Club’s Pre-Beginners Good Citizen Stakes after she and Poppy completed a flawless round. The pair also made the final of the YKC Handler of the Year class. And it wasn’t just Poppy who came under the spotlight, as Paige and another of her dogs, a bearded collie called Puzzle,

qualified for the final of the YKC pastoral stakes. “I was very pleased with both of the dogs,” said Paige. “This was the first time I had competed in an obedience class at Crufts so I was quite nervous to start with, but we had an almost perfect round which made me feel confident that I’d done well. “While Poppy is eight and quite steady, Puzzle is only two years old but he did everything I asked of him too. Crufts is my favourite show and this year it was really special.”

NANTWICH Rotarians have donated £700 to St Luke’s Hospice. Club president Rod Stokes said: “Santa and the Rotary float made over £4,000 on its

annual visit to Nantwich due to the generosity of the people of Nantwich; as a result we are able to support both our local community and local charities such as St. Luke’s.”

FAMILIES flocked to Reaseheath College’s Lambing and Zoo Weekend this month. Spring has sprung in the Nantwich college’s lambing sheds with the arrival of the first newborns of the season. The lambing weekends have been a major draw to the college over the past 20 years, with many visitors returning each season to meet the lambs and hopefully experience a live birth. Some 500 expectant ewes were due to produce 1,000 lambs, including three sets of

quads and 59 sets of triplets. The college’s agriculture students have been staying up through the night to make sure the lambs and their mothers get the best care. The campus zoo has also been open to the public, housing over 1,000 animals including meerkats, lemurs, tapirs, otters and reptiles. Families were also able to handle and fly birds of prey, thanks to student members of Reaseheath’s Birds of Prey Society who ran special sessions with some of the college’s owls.

THE Dabbers cruelly missed out on a trip to Wembley in the FA Trophy. Losing 2-4 in the first leg against Halifax Town, Nantwich needed two goals to level the tie. The Dabbers gave everything and with seconds to go were leading 2-1 after goals from Liam Shotton and Mat Bailey left them needing just one more to secure extra time. But in the final minute Andy White unfortunately turned the ball home into his own net trying to clear a cross. All the travelling fans were very proud of the team who fought back after conceding an early goal to make it 2-1 and created several chances to get that all important goal. Nantwich were the better side on the day and many Halifax fans – to their credit – made the effort to tell the

Nantwich fans how unlucky they were after the game. The game was an excellent tie and the atmosphere was highly charged given what was at stake. The hosts took the lead on four minutes when Walker got past Bailey and crossed the ball into the area where Jordan Burrow was on hand to turn the ball past Terry Smith to make it 1-0 on the day - a real hammer blow at the time for NTFC. But the Dabbers didn’t let their heads drop and showed real grit to equalise with a chipped goal from Shotton. Then Nantwich took the lead in superb fashion. Cooke’s in-swinging corner was brilliantly headed by Bailey, who powered the ball perfectly over the goalkeeper and into the far corner of the net, sending the Nantwich

fans wild. The Dabbers did all they could after that to find the vital goal but in the end it proved elusive and the own goal dealt the killer blow to Nantwith hearts. But the Dabbers can hold their heads high and be proud

of a valant effort, as can the fans who travelled and sang their support throughout the match.
