n the past, Denver has received little respect in the world of fashion.

“Denver? Do you only wear western?” Yes, we love our western, but there’s so much more. And it’s about time we earn the respect any fashion savvy city deserves. In the past, when new department stores

opened, luxurious designer merchandise was offered and then taken away — leaving worldly fashionistas the choice of special ordering, traveling to another shopping destination or going online instead of settling for B category goods.

We’re gaining momentum in recent years though. Local designers are making their mark with worldwide distribution and awards. Popular boutiques thrive and new ones continue to open and are generating good volumes of business while earning recognition.

At this year’s international FGI conference, Fashion Group International of DENVER walked away with the coveted Special Event Award for it’s RISING STAR Runway Gala. Not Dallas, not Miami. Not LA. Not Mexico City. DENVER

A fashion-savvy committee, who took notes around town for several months at various venues, galas and events, chose these 17 as The Villager’s “Best Dressed Women 2010” and asked them to answer a few questions. Each thought she was merely part of a fashion feature and until STILETTO was published would not learn that indeed, she was on the Best Dressed List. Representing various decades and walks of life, they have unique interpretations of style, certainly know how to put themselves together, dress appropriately for the occasion and genuinely understand the importance of appearance and image.

Why or what got you interested in fashion?

Growing up in Hong Kong, London and Paris, seeing a lot of people dressed in different styles…and looked gorgeous.

Do you have a fashion icon? Who?No.

Favorite designer?Alexander McQueen and Karl Lagerfeld

Are you a slave to fashion?Absolutely Not. At least I don’t think so. I

wear what I like, not what is fashionable.

How would you describe your style? Favorite color?

Style: more French and Chanel, because the cut is more suitable for a petite frame.

I like black, white, and red.

Where do you like to shop? Shopping is all about having fun.

Have you ever had a stylist or personal shopper?

I suppose having a personal shopper/stylist is a luxury, like a good massage. No, I have never had one.

Do you collect special clothing or accessories?

Yes…I love an exquisite cut with lovely materials that feel great. I love clothes that drape well, and move well with the body. A well tailored piece of clothing is fine art.

Accessories? Pearls work with everything. Can be as modern as you would like, or as classical. It is how you wear the piece(s) that can give it life.

Your most coveted fashion item? A double strand pearl and diamond

bracelet. I wear it with everything.

Why or what got you interested in fashion?

I’ve loved fashion ever since my sister and I started making clothers for our Barbie dolls when we were kids. I think I really grew into my own style when I moved to Philadelphia for college.

Do you have a fashion icon? Who?

Gwen Stefani. I think her style now is so unique. She can dress it up and be glamorous or dress it down and still be glamorous! She’s not afraid to take risks and channel the fashion icons of the past. Of course I like a little Audrey Hepburn now and then too.

Favorite designer? Marc Jacobs, Besty

Johnson (for accessories), Gwen Stefani, Romeo and Juliet Couture and the list could go on. Every designer has unique characteristics that I am inspired by.

Are you a slave to fashion?

I would be if I had a bigger bank account! I love the creativity and individuality one can express through fashion. I don’t think we should be slaves to the runway and wear clothing that doesn’tfit our body type. I think we should appreciate it and use the fashion world’s suggestions to create our own style.

How would you describe your style? Favorite color?

I would say my style is sophisticated, yet playful.

Favorite colors to wear are white or blue.

Favorite color for everything else would be red-orange.

Where do you like to shop? especially locally?

On A Lark in the Wash Park neighborhood has some cool clothing made from recycled fabric. I bought this gorgeous orange, gold and pink skirt made from recycled draperies there. I also love

True Love shoes – the prices are incredible for the style and the quality. Otherwise, Loehmann’s,

urban Outfitters, Forever 21 and H&M (Philadelphia and New york locations) are by far my favorites.

Have you ever had a stylist or personal shopper?

I never have. I consider myself my own stylist and personal shopper!

Do you collect special clothing or accessories?

I really love brooches. My mom gave me one of my grandmother’s brooches and I like to think it goes with everything. I have started to collect more of my own from shops so I can give grandmother’s a rest every now and then! I also have a ridiculous collection of shoes.

What is your most coveted fashion item?

My Betsy Johnson strawberry and yellow/black zebra print clutch. I take it everywhere. Love it!

Jackie MoutzourisdenverWhy or what got you

interested in fashion?I’ve always loved clothes and

I think it comes from my Mom. Ever since I was in kindergarten she would dress me up and do my hair. No matter what, my Mom made sure my hair was always done and my clothes were always perfect! As a result my teacher, Mrs. Castor, always called me Miss America! In high school I was voted “Best Dressed”, “Best Make-up” and “Most Likely to win Miss America”

Do you have a fashion icon? Who?

I admire different people because of their different styles. For example, Jennifer Aniston is always so well put together and she always looks classic and timeless. I love Kim Kardashian! She is just absolutely beautiful all the way around! Another favorite is Jessica Alba because she has a slight funkiness to her style.

Favorite designer?I love many designers for

different reasons! I love Diane von Furstenburg’s whole design aesthetic. It’s always fun and classic with a slight sexiness! I enjoy wearing David Meister’s dresses because they are very flattering and fit comfortably. I absolutely love yves Saint Laurent’s handbags ... who doesn’t?!

Are you a slave to fashion?

Honestly, not any more! I used to make sure I was

always in heels and my make up was done to perfection, but now I am happy in jeans, sneakers and a t-shirt!

It’s okay to have a lazy day once in a while.

How would you describe your style? Fave color?

Modern with a classic and bright twist!

I am a girly girl and I love, love, love pink! I love it so much that my bedroom (at Mom’s house) is pink and if people ever buy me something it’s usually pink!

Where do you like to shop? especially locally?

I don’t have a favorite shop because I like to go everywhere! For example, Delish Demure in DTC, Pink’s on university and the shops in Cherry Creek North. I will say this, though: I cannot stand going into stores, whether local or not, where they are snobs and act like their customers don’t exist! If that happens I walk right out!

Have you ever had a stylist or personal shopper?

While competing for the title of Miss uSA 2006, all of the state titleholders had stylists for the main event. I’ve never had a personal shopper. I rely on the comments, opinions, and reactions of my Mom, sister and friends to tell me whether or not something is right for me or not.

Do you collect special clothing or accessories?

I love to collect a variety of scarves! My family loves to knit and crochet. We all like to make scarves and some of us even make blankets. I have a great collection of hand knit/crocheted scarves from my Mom, grandma, aunts and even myself.

What is your most coveted fashion item?

When my husband and I started dating he bought me a beautiful pair of Louis Vuitton patent leather monogram pumps! I was ecstatic! I only wear them on special occasions because I don’t want to ruin them.

Why or what got you interested in fashion?

I’ve always loved clothes and accessories! As a little girl, I remember observing what different women would wear and then trying to emulate it with my own wardrobe. I had quite the collection of plastic high heels!

Do you have a fashion icon? Who?

I’ve always loved my paternal grandmother’s style. She has a wonderful collection of jewelry, shoes and suits. And she always knows how to wear them just right. I also think that Michelle Obama and Helen Mirren have incredible senses of style.

Favorite designer? No one in particular. I like to

mix it up.

Are you a slave to fashion?I’d say “no,” because I’m

don’t always buy the trendiest clothes. I select pieces carefully, with plans of wearing them for a long time. I’ve figured out what works for me: what conveys a

sense of style while still being age-appropriate (believe me, I was heartbroken the first time I realized I was too “old” to wear a ruffled mini-skirt).

How would you describe your style? Fave color?

I would describe my style as sophisticated yet approachable. I love clothes that give an aura of elegance, while still expressing some personality. I rarely go a day without wearing high-heels and I am a huge fan of wrap dresses. This Fall, I’m loving the look of jeans tucked into boots. My favorite color is fuchsia pink. Ironically, I own very few clothing items of that color!

Where do you like to shop? When the mood to shop hits

me, I usually go to Cherry Creek Mall. I’m a big fan of Caché, Nordstrom and Macy’s. And, surprisingly, I’ve found some great pieces and accessories at Forever 21. I also love the victory of a great bargain, which I can

usually find at places like Ross and TJ Maxx.

Have you ever had a stylist or personal shopper?

Our stylist, here at 9NEWS, is Patti Shyne. She’s really good at spying out what different stores are carrying and giving us “hot tips” on where to go to get what we need.

Do you collect special clothing or accessories?

No, I don’t collect anything special.

What is your most coveted fashion item?

My most coveted fashion item is my embroidered gold coat, stitched with big, bold red flowers. Every time I wear it, I feel like a queen! People always compliment me on it. The only downside is that I can’t wear it too often… because it’s so memorable!

Where do you like to shop?

Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Delish Demure, Cherry Creek North. I like service and a smaller atmosphere. So, I prefer small specialty departments and small boutique shops.

Have you ever had a stylist or personal shopper? yes, a stylist, my mom. It is so much fun and helpful having a stylist look at

your clothes and create new outfits and ideas with things you already have in your closet. I highly recommend it!

Do you collect special clothing or accessories?

Shoes and jackets. I don’t think you can have to many.

What is your most coveted fashion item?

My silver, glitter Christion Louboutin shoes. They are the first pair I ever purchased.

Why or what got you interested in fashion?

My mom. She is the best dressed woman I know. Ever since I can remember my mom had such class and timeless style. She still does today when we attend events together I can’t wait to see what she wears.

Do you have a fashion icon? Who?

My mom, Jackie Kennedy, Sarah Jessica Parker. Timeless, classic beauty!

Favorite designer? There are so many wonderful

designers I have a huge variety. If I have to choose for shoes Christian Louboutin. Nothing makes you feel sexier than a fabulous pair of shoes. Ralph Lauren is always clean and classic, Valentino dresses are beautiful and feminine.

Are you a slave to fashion?

yes I think about it all the time even though I spend a lot of time at the gym and am a total jock I am also very feminine and girly. I think how you dress and present yourself is a reflection of your inside self.

How would you describe your style? Favorite color?

I am a little bit of a mix. My mom taught me to spend money on timeless pieces that you can wear forever, so I am classic. But, I am also a little bit of a Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City where I might add a fun out of the box color, shoe or bag to give my classic look a little pop. I really like all colors. I actually try to avoid too much black.

Page 6: Stiletto: Mile High Haute

Why or what got you interested in fashion?

At CSU I am a Fashion and Merchandizing major and I have always had a great eye for fashion. In my future I will be trying to pursue being a stylist in L.A. or New York. The classes I take explain what is in and what is not! So I always know the right things to wear during each season.

Do you have a fashion icon? Who?

My Fashion icon would have to be Kim Kardashian. I love all of the styles that she presents and she can pull of any outfit and it always looks great on her.

Favorite designer?My favorite designer is

Chanel or Juicy Couture.

Are you a slave to fashion?

I am a slave to fashion! I will always be looking for the new and best looks before everyone else gets to them! I want my friends to always ask, “Oh my Gosh where did you get that!”

How would you describe your style? Fave color?

My style is very girly, I love to wear short dresses to go out and hang out with friends. My favorite color is pink and green. My outfit always has to match and be cute or I can never leave the house.Where do you like to shop? Especially locally?

I love to shop at Love Culture, Guess, Forever 21, and Nordstrom’s.

Have you ever had a stylist or personal shopper?

I have never had a stylist or a personal shopper.

Do you collect special clothing or accessories?

I am in love with getting the most Juicy tracksuits and Uggs! I love uggs I wish I could have every color and style.

What is your most coveted fashion item?

I love heels! I am in love with my shoes they are like my babies. I will buy heels so I can say I have them even if I don’t wear them.

Why or what go you interested in fashion?

Viewers paid a lot of attention to what I wore when I anchored the news for 25 consecutive years. I had just as many calls, emails and letters about what I wore as what news stories I told.

Do you have a fashion icon?

I love Tory Burch. She has captured my style from head to toe.

Favorite designer? I adore local designer Ollie

Sang. Please google her designs and sign up to visit her sample sales, where you can find some real steals. People stop me when I wear her fabulous jackets in New York and L.A. and I love sharing this jaw dropping designer is from the fashion forward city of Denver.

Are you a slave to fashion?

No, I just get that being on tv you need to recognize, it’s a visual medium and people always remember what the female anchorwoman is wearing but rarely the anchorman.

How wold you describe your style?

Current but classy yet sassy. Favorite color? I love red. I wore red way too much anchoring the news because I actually believed it made me look more awake and less tired, isn’t that funny.

Where do you like to shop? Especially locally?

One of my dear friends has a darling store, I would love for your readers to check out Blue Ruby in Historic Littleton. It’s Colorado chic, with lots of great boots, belts and jackets you will not find anywhere else.

Have you ever had a stylist or personal shopper?

Yes, most of the tv stations where I anchored the news, assigned us people to pick us a part, just kidding. I really did appreciate all the help I could get! They would do the color wheels on us and show us what jackets and jewelry was most flattering. We had lots of help deciding the best styles for the times. And here was the best part, the stations gave us clothing allowances every year, so we could afford to keep up with the latest fashions. I just kept it classic which rarely goes out of style.

Do you collect special clothing or accessories?

I love Judith Jack Jewelry. It is timeless and goes with everything I own. Judith and Jack found estate jewelry and copied it. The result is my favorite accessory. You don’t see many people wearing it, but when you do it really is stunning. I feel so blessed every time I get to wear it, because everyone I love has given me a piece of it and the collection is reflection of all that love. (I am wearing Judith Jack in this photo - this is from the Valentine’s day collection - which is so special to me because Valentine’s day is the day I adopted my little boy - who gave me one of the hearts - he of course, has all of mine.)

Why or what got you interested in fashion?

Fashion is something that I have always been interested in it and I decided that I wanted to make a future out of it because I am passionate about fashion and I am good at it.

Do you have a fashion icon? Who?

My fashion icon has been my mom because she has an amazing sense of fashion and she always is brutally honest with what looks good and what doesn’t.

Favorite designer?Coco Chanel

Are you a slave to fashion?

I am a slave to fashion in the sense that I never stop tweaking my style and I am constantly buying new pieces to add to my closet; but at the same time, I know when to stop and say no. My fashion doesn’t control me, I control my fashion.

How would you describe your style? Favorite color?

I have many different style aesthetics but for the most part I could consider myself preppy. I love the chic country club look and dressing up. I strive to look high fashion every day. My favorite color is green.

Where do like to shop? I love Loehmann’s,

Anthropologie, urban Outfitters, and different unique boutiques that I find in the mountains or in small towns.

Have you ever had a stylist or personal shopper?

No, I prefer to put together and create my own style rather than have someone else do it for me (although I enjoy styling others).

Do you collect special clothing or accessories?

I would say I have a unique

collection of jewelry from all over the u.S., China, and Mexico. I like to collect clothing pieces and accessories that no one else has. I don’t have a specific collection because it is across the border for me.

Most coveted item?I adore my designer dress

Collection is Carlisle, designed in New York and inspired by all of the couture houses and mills. I have loved fashion for as long as I can remember and have worn pieces from numerous designers but for the past several years, the “go-to” items in my closet are all a part of the Carlisle Collection… its classic elegance with a modern twist. I love the incredible details, luxurious fabrics and the fact that it is only sold privately which keeps my wardrobe unique and exclusive.

There is no feeling like the one you get when you walk out the door in something FABULOUS and people stop to ask where you got your outfit.

Are you a slave to fashion?NO… I am an addict!

How would you describe your style? Favorite color?

Classic, current and ever

changing… Each day and each mood brings a little something different. Some days you will find me in a tailored outfit with a little flair of course… every detail in place. Other days its workout clothes, jeans and cowboy boots or Harley leathers. In most instances, it is usually done with a touch of bling.

My favorite colors to wear are black and white but I love “brights” as well… turquoise, hot pink and red.

Where do you like to shop? I love to shop anywhere. Los

Angeles, Las Vegas, Paris and Milan are all favorites but New York City is my #1. If we are talking about stores, I prefer small boutiques but it is hard to beat the variety and service that Nordstrom’s offers… something I try to emulate in my own business.

Have you ever had a stylist or personal shopper?

No, I have never had one but I am a stylist and personal shopper for my own clientele.

Do you collect special clothing or accessories?

Well, I am not sure you would call it a “Collection” but I know my husband does… he loves to count my shoes! I am an Imelda wanna be.

What is your most coveted fashion item?

There is not one item in my wardrobe that shines above the others with the exception of my wedding ring. I know it might not be considered a fashion item but I never feel completely dressed until I put it back on each day. Not only is it the most special thing I own but it is the final touch on anything I am wearing.

My most coveted fashion apparel item is my flannel pajamas!

Clothes and accessories are such fun and can make you feel smart, confident, funky or sexy – or can do the opposite. I’ve always felt that how a person dresses can affect their performance.

How would you describe your style?

Classic with a dash of flash

Have you ever had a stylist or personal shopper?

Judy LaPoint helped me understand and enjoy fashion.

Do you collect special clothing or accessories?

No, but I do LOVE high heels!!!

What is your most coveted fashion item?

A Versace purse that George got me for my birthday about three years ago (well - I actually did the shopping for him, which I’m sure he totally appreciated). It was the most expensive item I’ve (he’s) ever purchased, but this will be my fourth year using it – so to my way of thinking, when you factor in price/wear, it has made it a very thrifty purchase!

Why or what got you interested in fashion?

My mom was my fashion inspiration. I spent hours watching her get ready for her weekly Friday night date with my dad. She was always dressed to the hilt and looked like she came right off of the pages of the current fashion magazines. Every morning we had a hot breakfast before we headed off to school and she always served it in a fabulous outfit with high heels and full makeup. As Room Mother for most of my years, all of the little girls would flock to her as soon as she came to the school. I think she was their idol too.

Do you have a fashion icon? Who?

I have a couple… Coco Chanel and Jackie O. It is hard to top the life story and fashion influence of Coco Chanel. She helped to liberate the women of her time from a restricting wardrobe to one of casual elegance and comfort. She incorporated trousers for women into her Collection, introduced the cardigan and brought us the “little black dress” which are all fashion essentials today.

Although nothing was ordinary about the life of Jackie O, she did bring fashion to the ordinary woman. She was not a designer but she set fashion trends with her impeccable taste and style and was a role model for woman to create their own fashion statement. Even today, comparisons are still drawn to her.

Favorite designer?I have a great appreciation for

many designers but my favorite

Where to keep it all?So where do you house

those fabulous fashion finds of the season?

“The trend in homebuilding and remodeling is to build smaller master bedrooms and bathrooms and larger master closets,” said Polly Lestikow, owner Closet Factory. “We hear clients asking for dressing rooms where all of their clothing is in one space and they can dress for the day without having to access a dresser in the bedroom. We can make spaces for drawers to hold undergarments, workout clothes and jewelry as well as spaces for suitcases and laundry.”

The tiny closets of yesterday have become the beautiful boudoirs of today. “

morrisonWhy or what got you interested in fashion?

It has always been “in my Jeans” (genes)!

Do you have a fashion icon? Who?

Not really. As a Style Therapist, I look at each individual person and if the “shoe fits” so to speak, the fashion works.

A person has to feel really comfortable and committed to their “look” to become an icon, in my mind!

Favorite designer?

I have always admired Ralph Lauren for the elegant, classic, yet contemporary clothing for the modern American woman.

In the non-traditional, forward thinking, exciting designers, I admire ySL, Dolce and Gabanna and Dreese vanNoten.

Are you a slave to fashion?

Hmmm. Less a slave than a disciple of creativity and design.

How would you describe your style? Favorite color?

This is a difficult question as I have several different attitudes about what I where. It is always dictated by the event and the venue. I can be very traditional

or “age appropriate” over the top.

No favorite color, however, when in doubt….BLACK is the answer.

Where do you like to shop? especially locally?

I like to shop Neiman Marcus and Saks for the trends. Many times I find interesting things in the wonderful small boutiques in and around Denver. Basically I try to find the best designs for the best value.

Have you ever had a stylist or personal shopper?

Just ME!

Do you collect special clothing or accessories?

I love hats and have a collection from travels around the world. I also have a plethora of scarves and belts. There are so perfect for travel as they take up little space, but change an entire look in a moment!

Your most coveted item?

I have a long red fox boa that was given to me by a special aunt who was a fashionista who I admired and loved. She also always wore hats all the time. (MuST be in my genes!)

Why or what got you interested in fashion?

When I was a child growing up in the Midwest in a small town, my mother would drive from city to city, drag my sister, brother and I from boutique to boutique while she shopped. Her closet included Lacroix, Mugler, Chanel and since she later sold couture clothing, she was always current and made certain that we were as well with our clothing.

Do you have a fashion icon?

I have two: my mother and my sister. My sister, Monica is an artist and could pull together seemingly mismatched patterns and colors which always turned out looking great together. From her I learned a fearless approach to exploring fashion. My Mother has a natural and innate sense of style, sophistication and an eye for design. From her I learned not only about how to discern quality but that accessories make the outfit.

Favorite designer?I tend to like many of the

unknown shoe and handbag designers. They offer a fresh energy and a unique, fearless look. I have always put the most emphasis on accessory designers and my favorites are Santagostino, The Woods, A & Furst and Martin Bernstein in the world of fine jewelry. They are so unique in their style from whimsical to organic, classical to edgy. The right jewelry unquestionably transforms an outfit and sets the mood.

Are you a slave to fashion?I would say that I have never

been a slave to fashion nor am I a label hound... although I do love to shop and play with fashion and accessories. I believe that fashion should be an expression of one’s own individuality and should not be fussy but should feel comfortable.

How would you describe your style? Fave color?

My style is dictated by what appeals to me that day, meaning I may want to wear a particular pair of shoes or scarf or piece of jewelry so my wardrobe is created around those accessories. It’s about the feel of good fabrics, texture and layering. I’ve always felt that someone could throw on a gunny sack and look dynamite with the right accessories. Colors are a personal preference depending upon skin tone, but my favorite colors to wear are shades of white, natural tan and any colors that harken to the ocean.

These colors are fresh and uplifting.

Where do you like to shop? I prefer small, independent

boutiques where I can be assured of personalized and attentive service. One of the reasons my husband and I selected Denver for our jewelry store was our desire to be surrounded by independent, like-minded business owners. The stores I enjoy shopping with include Blush, Blu, Lawrence Covell and, of course, Oster Jewelers where I shop for my

accessories within my own store.

Have you ever had a stylist or personal shopper?

My mother and my sister have always been my personal stylists and we truly enjoy shopping together. They both offer the best fashion guidance and I trust their eyes for design and trendsetting senses.

Do you collect special clothing or accessories?

Not really. If I like something and it fits with my style or mood, I buy it. I wouldn’t call myself a collector. Although, I have amassed quite a wonderful collection of bead bracelets and necklaces as well as some stunning, large one-of-kind rings and watches. Ok, so I do have

quite a few scarves and shoes also. Maybe I AM a collector of accessories and jewelry!

What is your most coveted fashion item?

If I have to chose only one of my favorite accessories it would be my “Mojo” ring by Santagostino. My husband designed it with the Santagostino family of Italy and it’s a true one-of-a kind customized ring with a raised gold enameled carving of our dog Mojo in the center. It’s a work of art and the love and effort put into creating this ring by everyone involved makes me emotional whenever I wear it. When I look at it, it reminds me of how thankful I am to work, live and be surrounded by style, fashion and creative people. It makes life colorful.

oyster gray (light gray) and rose dust.

Fashionista.com claims ’50s-’60s shapes, accentuating curves, below the knee hem, creating hourglass shapes, full circle skirt and dress. Go’70s for nighttime looks — metallic colors and flowy dresses, high-waisted pants, earthy tones

Saks Fifth Avenue made this statement quoting Glenda Bailey, Harper’s BAZAAR editor-in-chief:

Gray Days – Heather gray hits a high note. High Standards – Such as a high lace-up bootie. Sport Utility – A sporty messenger bag sends just the right message. Eye Candy – Smoky shadows ruled the catwalks making trend a reality. Cocktails, anyone? Add color to your life with a painterly printed dress.

Harper’s BAZAAR touts “Urban Warrior” looks of black, long outer coats, fur coats, more structured shapes, strict tailoring and fur (in darker colors such as black or dark blue). “Conservative Glamour” includes subtle colors like tans and grays and lighter fabrics like cashmere; less structured suits, described as “not in your face” glamour. “Eccentric Ladylike” includes bolder, deeper colors such as different shades of purple and red; mixing patterns like plaid and sequins.

Neiman Marcus has THE LIST. The go to hue is green. As a trim or statement piece the look of fur is luxe.

Pearls layered or alone are the season’s wisest choice. Lace is fall’s feminine touch. Feathers take to flights of fancy. Boots step out to a variety of heights and heels. Chic outerwear is everywhere – capes, ponchos, vests.
