International, there are clearly choices in spite of the economy and state of the globe.

Here is some excerpts of her edited and brilliant commentary about what was seen for fall 2011 on runways around the world – from Milan to New York with London and Paris thrown in for good measure.

Revolutions.Tsunamis.EarthquakesOccupiers and demonstrators.Designers leaving the runways

for rehab. Rehabbed models returning

to the runways. Is it Apocalypse now? Are we

among the Armageddon? Is this a prequel to the end of the world?

The smoke-and-ashes runway and the eerie, tree-shadowed walls of Karl Lagerfeld masterminded as the backdrop for the Chanel show had a definite doomsday aura, and his mostly gray collection of roomy, tweedy coveralls, no-nonsense sportswear and ankle-length cuffed trousers seemed to reinstate the somber sensibility of the smoldering runway. If fashion is truly the barometer of the times, is chaos the message for Fall/Winter 2011/2012? Or is it theme denial?

Answer: A little of both. For those who would like

to hide out, protectionism is at hand via sweeping, oversized capes, voluminous coats, over-stuffed puffers and commodious dresses. Biggies in this expansionist movement: Rick

Owens, Raf Simons of Jil Sander, Stella McCartney, Issey Miyake, Viktor & Rolf, Jean Paul Gaulthier and Thakoon.

Fashion’s denial role begins with the idea of ignoring the turmoil of today by adopting the polite dressing of yesterday. You can take refuge in The ‘20s, ‘30s,’40s, ‘50s, ‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s and even the minimalistic ‘90s – all with fashion’s blessings.

The return of the lady in Milan and the return of the bourgeoisie in Paris both celebrate a good-brand of fall fashion. Hats and gloves. Ladies and Gents. Pleats. The updated classicism of Britain’s new Princess Catherine (Middleton).

At Salvatore Ferragamo, the ladyfied and gentrified pinstripe suits by Massimiliano Giornetti gave a new impression of discretion and houndstooth checks, herringbones and plaids mashed-up in a perfection of restraint and taste with an edge. And for updated elegance, Ralph Lauren scored with his polished leather halter dress, his tux redux and his chic chinoiseries.

Purr for FurIn the denial mindset, pre-

tending to be rich is almost as good as being rich. Well, kind of. Enter the fur-ioso force of fur and faux fur. From fur-sided glasses at Alexander Wang to hats at The Row to a bottle at Tod’s a bag at Michael Kors, a collar at Van Noten and a bib at Fendi, fur is an important in accessories as it is in apparel. That word spread and plastics are resonating at Burberry Prorsum, Costume National, Louis Vuitton, Prada and Mugler by Nicola Formichetti. The most techno-amazing evening dress of the season is Manish Arora’s gown made of vinyl, which was laser-cut to look like a wearable doily.

Who or what got you interested in fashion?

I first became interested in fashion when I was transitioning into adulthood from high school to college. Hoping to meet new people and establish relationships, I always felt that the outside appearance (clothing, hair, posture, etc.) play an important role in how you are perceived. I also feel that fashion is a way of expressing who you are.

Do you have a fashion icon? Who?

My fashion icon would be Audrey Hepburn; I love the elegance and grace she portrays.

How would you describe your style? Favorite color?

I would actually describe my style as versatile – chic and

sophisticated but also fun and free. I love the elegance of an evening gown or a cocktail dress but also the freedom and spirit of Janis Joplin style attire. My favorite color is black.

Favorite current designer? Donna Karan and Versace.

Where do you like to shop? especially locally?

I mainly shop at Nordstrom and Macy’s.

Have you ever had a stylist or personal shopper?

No.

Do you collect special clothing or accessories? Most coveted item?

I collect necklaces. I love to travel and find unique pieces that may not be found locally.

Lori Baird eaton

DenverWho or what got you interested in fashion?

I have always been interested in fashion since I was a little girl, looking at the glossy pages of fashion magazines, and modeling for more than 20 years learning about designers, fabrics, and attention to detail in clothing.

Do you have a fashion icon? Who?

My fashion icon(s) would

have to be Jennifer Aniston and Sarah Jessica Parker, who both have great classic styles but mix it up with fun, eclectic pieces and accessories.

Favorite current designer? Besides the designers at

Etcetera, my favorite current designer would have to be Stella McCartney who does a great job of designing masculine and

feminine pieces with fun prints, colors and fabulous fabrics.

How would you describe your style? Favorite color?

I would describe my style as pretty classic with an edgy flair. I love wearing clothes that are timeless, that I can dress up or dress down, and have fun with accessories and jewelry.

My favorite color would have to be PINK – it’s a feminine and flirty color, and there’s a shade of pink that looks great on every woman.

Where do you like to shop? especially locally?

Since I have three girls (a teenager, a 2 year old and a 10 month old), I don’t get out shopping much, which Etcetera makes shopping easy for me. There are so many great places to shop in Denver but my favorites are Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Mariel and Gnat Original Design for jewelry. I need to make it a goal of mine to check out some local boutiques.

Have you ever had a stylist or personal shopper?

I have been styled for fashion shows by some of the best stylists (Lloyd Boston, Bobby Thomas, Tracy Bozarth) but not personally, and have never had a personal shopper – it would be nice though to get a different style perspective.

Do you collect special clothing or accessories? Most coveted item?

I collect my favorite pieces of Etcetera Clothing, but I do have an appreciation and love for vintage clothing and accessories. My brother-in-law has a vintage clothing business and gave me a silver and turquoise cuff bracelet that is a one of a kind and I love it.

Dora enrightDenverWho or what got you

interested in fashion?I admire my mother for

instilling in me the love of fashion. Throughout my life she has taught me the one of the greatest lessons in life, “dress to impress.”

Do you have a fashion icon? Who?

I believe each individual has their own style and I admire

the different aspects of many designers and the way stylish women mix designer pieces to create a great look.

Favorite current designer?Right now I love the collections

of Tory Burch, Tracy Reese, Vera Wang, Prada and Diane Von Furstenberg. Being a young

working woman, I appreciate designers who create classic styles while still making women feel beautiful in their clothes.

How would you describe your style? Favorite color?

I dress for the occasion. My style varies by event whether I am going into the office, hitting up the town or attending a special gala. I would say I have a classic style with a few trends incorporated throughout. A staple color of my wardrobe is of course black. I am drawn to some of the new transformational dresses and enjoy wearing new colors for this season – citron and ink, sleek and minimal.

Where do you like to shop? especially locally?

For the classic staple piece I will visit Nordstrom. For all of the latest trends I like to see what is being shown in the local boutiques around town. I strive to find the best design at the best price.

Have you ever had a stylist or personal shopper?

I admire Rachel Lefort, Nathalia Faribault, and Lauren Vitalie for always looking fashionable.

Do you collect special clothing or accessories? Most coveted item?

I love to collect timeless pieces that are great investments. A new trend is the support of social enterprises through fashion. Recently I purchased a dress through a designer in Dallas called the Abi Ferrin-signature 5 way dress. This dress has the ability to transform into five different styles that satisfies the consumer while also supports women from Nepal through the social enterprise concept.
