DESCRIPTION

After centuries of German and Roman influences, Maastricht is one of the oldest cities in Netherlands. It offers cultural promises, shopping destinations, gastronomic delights. Everywhere, in historical Vrijthof or in Céramique neighbourhood, medieval is blent with modern, traditional with cuttingedge, in the streets, the museums or the shops. This has never been more true during TEFAF, one of the world’s greatest art and antiques fair (14-23 March, 2014): whether you are staying for one night or a full week, here is a guide of all you need to visit and know of Maastricht, with the best places, restaurants, hotels and stores, chosen for you by Stiletto Editions.

Kruisheren Hotel lobby

Maastricht by caMille OOstwegelHe has turned a 15th-century cloister, an old farmhouse and an impressive castle into some of the best hotels of Maastricht region, in the city center (Kruisheren Hotel) or in the magnificent countryside (Château St Gerlach). Camille Oostwegel owns today, with his ChâteauHotels company, three hotels and seven restaurants, and works with 400 employees. However, with his wife Judith, he still finds time to wonder at Maastricht’s surprises, that he knows like the back of his hand, from the most magical museums (he is one of the president of Museum Aan Het Vrijthof) to the perfect floral shop in the center (Friessen Pieters) or the best fries... A faithful admirer of France, Camille Oostwegel perfectly embodies the notion of “art de vivre”, enjoying every beauty life

has to offer.

He is called “the travelling painter”. From his workshop in old Montmartre, Henri

Landier decided to give Camille Oostwegel a wonderful present: an exhibition of his latest works, all inspired by Rembrandt’s

self portraits. The event will take place at the Kruisheren Hotel, for the first time in the Netherlands, during TEFAF Maastricht.

KruishereN hOtel

Maastricht’s most stunning hotel, set by Camille Oostwegel within a 15th-century

Gothic church. The rooms are located in the cloisters while the restaurant is

under the nave, surrounded by frescoes, stone arches and Ingo Maurer’s light

installations. Don’t miss the lovely cloister’s garden for a drink in a spring

evening.

Designed by Aldo Rossi, completed in 1995, the Bonnefantenmuseum is now a trademark

in Maatsricht’s landscape and surely one of the best places to seek inspiration. Its torpedo-

shaped building, made of stone and zinc, hosts Old Masters (Rubens, Pieter Brueghel

the Younger) and contemporary art (Sol LeWitt or Richard Serra). The 4,000 sq. m. space is

crossed by light, thanks to its central starcase. Until April 13th, 2014, “Beating Around The

Bush” will show works by Mark Manders, István Csákány and Camille Henrot.

museum AAN het VrijthOF

One of the president of this fantastic museum, Camille Oostwegel is very fond of this

conversion of a 16th-century government seat and a 18th-century residence, that

houses Maastricht’s most fabulous treasures, presented with videos and sounds. For grown-

ups and children alike, to know everything about the region and its history. From March 11th until June 1st, artist Désirée Tonnaer will show her latest sculptures, inspired by nature.
