Collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe The Collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe eases the way for the people of the region by helping Catholic organizations offer affordable shelter, train semi-narians, and provide pastoral care and catechesis. Your donation today helps to restore the Church and build the future in the aftermath of Soviet rule. Please be generous to the Col-lection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. Visit www.uscb.org (search “Church in Central and East-ern Europe”) to learn more about the important projects funded by the col-lection.

Jesus shows deep compassion for Simon Peter’s mother-in-law and re-stores her to health. She becomes a model for all those called to disciple-ship. She is healed and raised-up and begins to minister to Jesus…real disci-pleship/stewardship. This is an example for all of us. Once freed from the bonds of sin/Satan we are now truly free to serve…generously and fully…the Kingdom of God. Jesus demonstrates God’s deep compassion for the sick and suffering by re-sponding to all who come to him. Since they hear he is in the neighborhood families bring their sick and those afflicted in anyway…and Jesus restores them to wellbeing and health. That reflects the mission of the Christian family and Church. We are called to respond to the needs of others…and throughout our history we have established hospitals and care facilities for those who suf-fer. We are to be the expression of God’s compassion in the world today. The third part of the Gospel lesson shows us that Jesus is not satisfied to care for some…but reach out to all! He tells his disciples that they must go to all the towns and villages to being the Good News and the mercy and love of God. That is our call and our mission! This Sunday we hear of the unclean and suffering man filled with leprosy boldly and humbly approach Jesus and beg healing and wholeness. Je-sus responds with surprising tenderness and reaches out to touch the man and grant his earnest plea. Ministry means getting involved…it can’t really be done from a distance. We are called to give of ourselves generously and freely. Often it means doing what we might be afraid to do or society might not understand or approve of. God’s love wants to restore all to a right relationship with him and we are called to carry that mission out. Lent begins…with Ash Wednesday…which is Feb. 18th! We enter the Sa-cred Fast of Lent by fasting and abstaining on this special day. We come for-ward in procession to receive the sign of our intention to undergo a deeper conversion of heart and life…the sign of ashes on our forehead. We ask the Lord for the grace to enter and keep Holy Lent growing in our Baptismal calling to serve God alone. Blessed Ashes will be distributed during the Mass after the Homily…Masses will be 8:15 AM & 6:30 PM. Devotions during Lent…will be Wednesday evening with the Stations of the Cross at 7:00 PM. There will also be Stations of the Cross with the SSPP school children on Fridays at 1:40 PM…all are welcome. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament…will be each Thursday (all day - after the last Mass of the day)…with Benediction with the SSPP School Children…at 1:35 PM…and again in the evening with Evening Prayer & Benediction at 6:30 PM. God is calling…us to grow during this Lenten Season…through ‘Prayer & Study’. We can make our commitment and keep track of our progress…just to see how we are making an effort and keeping our commitment…by way of the cards in the pews and the inserts in the bulletin. It is just a helpful tool to guide us along the way of growing and listening to the ‘call to Joy’.

Special collection…for Eastern Europe will be this Sunday & Ash Wednes-day. After the devastation of Atheistic Communism there is a great need to rebuild the Church there…that is why we have the second collection this week-end.

Sun., Feb. 22: 10:30Mass Penitential Rite for all Confirmation Candidates and their Sponsors Principal’s Notes: It is the policy of SSPP School to close when Collinsville Unit 10 cancels classes due to unsafe road conditions. When Collinsville Unite 10 closes due to extreme cold, we will follow our own guidelines. I will close school when the forecasted real feel (wind chill) during the school day is minus 25 degrees or lower. School closings will be sent primarily via the School Reach phone messaging system. The notice will be telecast on channel 5 & Fox 2. Please do not call the school or parish office for this in-formation. In the invent of extreme weather during the school day, SSPP school will follow Collinsville Unit 10. The school board will be setting the tuition at the March board meeting. I am waiting for the benefits package from the diocese. There will be openings on next year’s board. We will be looking to replace some retiring members. We would especially like to have at least one dad to step forward and we can always use interested moms as well. If you are interested, contact me or Renee Crowder (board president). I would like to remind you that it looks like winter is not leaving anytime soon. Please make sure that your student is wearing a coat. A sweatshirt is hardly adequate protec-tion when the wind chill is below zero. Students may wear crew neck sweatshirts during the day, but they must be a solid color or have the school or Buzzy logo. Hooded sweatshirts can be worn to school, but cannot be worn in the classroom. We do have outside recess until it hits 15 real feel (wind chill). You will be receiving an update on your fundraising total soon. We have had a fantastic year so far. Because of you, we will be able to make some radical changes to our tech-nology next year. Thanks to all of you! I hope that all of you read the notice about the new door entry system. Thanks to VMASS security for the installation. Please be patient as we learn the new system.

Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Paul the People

Pleaser? Last week we heard St. Paul saying that he was all things to all people. This week, we

hear that he tried to please everyone. To modern ears, that sounds more like a used car salesman, who has just the right deal for any buyer. But that wasn’t what Paul meant. The key to Paul’s way of life is the last line of the second reading: “Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ.” (1 Cor 11:1)

Remember when Paul was

still Saul, the Jew who persecuted Christians? When he was struck by lightning he heard, not thunder, but the voice of Jesus, who asked why Saul was persecuting him. Paul later began to understand that all Chris-tians make up the body of Christ. As members of that body, we can show others what Jesus is like, by our ex-ample. That seems to be a two part process.

First, to show Christ, we

have to know Christ. We can do that by reading the scriptures and praying with them. We can receive the sacra-ments regularly, especially Recon-ciliation, where we experience his forgiveness and love, and the Eucha-rist, where Jesus unites himself with us, so that we can become more like him.

The second part is acting like

Jesus. If we want people to see Christ in us, we don’t dress like him, or grow a beard. We have to do things as Jesus would: Forgive peo-ple who hurt us, care for the sick, the dying, the poor. Don’t be afraid to tell people what God has done for you; encourage others to be grateful for what God has done for them. Pray with people who have difficulty talking to God.

Paul obviously didn’t please

everyone, or he wouldn’t have ended his life in prison. He was more inter-ested in pleasing God by spreading the Good News of Jesus’ resurrec-tion. If we can imitate Paul in that way, we can’t go wrong. Tom Schmidt, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

ZIGGY’S WISDOM: Who is in-volved in your Lenten plans? ZIGGY’S THOUGHTS: Seems like an easy answer, right...God and me! WRONG!
