On September 11 the Ss. Peter and Paul Junior High and Senior High Youth Groups held a combined event. It began with an open gym for the first hour where some participated in volleyball, basketball, and just talking and having fun. Af-ter refreshments, the youth moved over into the church where they sat in the sanctuary with Deacon Jimmy to dis-cuss “God Moments” and hear about the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist and Eucharistic Miracles.

From the Desk Of Fr. John Wow…you all know how to welcome some-one into the next era of their life! The birthday celebration was fantastic. So many people plan-ning ‘secretly’ behind the scenes for a great ef-fect and a big surprise. Thank you to each one of you for all the dedication and hard work to pull it off! Thanks to everyone for coming to the ‘party’ and sharing in the fun. The ‘fan club’ was a neat idea…and all those pictures. Where did you dig them up from…? Thank you also for your gifts and cards. I will treasure reading and reflecting on the gift of your friendship and the love we have come to know together. Thank you for the preciously framed print of the ‘Adoration of the Magi’ it is and will be a treas-ured memory of the one who brings us all togeth-er as a Holy Family…Jesus the Lord! Bishop Paprocki…will be appealing to us to share in the Annual Catholic Services Appeal (ACSA). Each year he faithfully invites us to see the bigger picture…all the parishes together providing services and ministries to all…yes to all the people. At our recent staff meeting we recalled and were amazed at all the services provided by the Dio-cese that we take advantage of…and compared how much it would cost if we had to ‘go it alone.’ But all parishes pitch-in and are ‘assessed’ ac-cording to their ‘ordinary income’ (explained in a later article) which then lightens the burden for everyone and makes it possible for many more services and acts of love. Our goal/assessment this year is $93,798…a little higher than last…but we achieved that goal. In fact we also reached our goal the previous year…and surpassed both of them. So…I know the Lord will bless us with a spirit of generosity for our efforts this year as well. We were blessed with three parables in the Gospel of last Sunday all reflecting the ‘lost and the found’…the lost sheep, the lost coin and the lost son. Jesus was helping the religious leaders and his disciples to understand the depth and richness of God’s love and mercy. Jesus had demonstrated that love and mercy by ‘welcoming

sinners and eating with them’ but the leaders did-n’t get it or wouldn’t buy it. So he told these sto-ries/parables to them with such insight and ten-derness as to touch their hearts. God’s unconditional love is what heals, restores and reconciles us to himself. He loves us with such a deep and generous love that it is hard for us to understand and often to accept. We wallow in our own sinfulness afraid to approach him. The young man in the parable finally came to his senses and returned to his father admitting his sin. The father’s love took over and fully restored him as his son who… ‘was dead and has come back to life, was lost and is now found!’ We are invited to ‘come to our senses’ and see the harm of sin and receive the wonderful grace of forgiveness. We move this Sunday to another story/parable of the unjust steward who was squan-dering his master’s money/property. The mas-ter calls for an accounting of his misdealings and is removing him from his position as the general steward of his property and business. The man realizes his predicament and acts swiftly to pre-pare for his being fired and left without income…and acts kindly to those who owe his master and are indebted to him. He is making friends in order to secure his future. There are many explanations of the meaning of this story/parable and all of them have value. Perhaps we can take a lesson from it that reflects on our own stewardship of money…possessions, etc. Because all that we have is a gift from the Lord…we often think it is ours, but it is given to us to use in the service of God and others. So are we being good stewards…or using it for our own selfish purposes? The Lord said…‘No servant can serve two masters...You cannot serve both God and mam-mon’! RCIA…welcome and congratulations to Jim, Janet, Sheri, Jeremy, Elizabeth, Terry, and Phyl-lis! Oct. 2…Life Chain for Life…stand up for life! Annual Chicken & Roast Pork Dinner…join us!

A unique community event will be held at Ss. Peter and Paul on Saturday, September 24 at 10:00 am. The Collinsville Hometown Heroes project will be officially unveiled at a cere-mony on Johnson Street be-tween Vandalia and Morrison. All parishioners are invited to attend the ceremony that will feature speakers, patriotic music and refreshments.

The Hometown Heroes project honors past or present members of the Armed Forces with a spe-cial banner that includes a photo and other military-related infor-mation. One hundred and thirty-nine banners will be hung on Main Street and Vandalia (including near our complex) near downtown the week of September 19. They will remain up for three months and be re-hung for a few years then re-

turned to the families who spon-sored them. Beside use of our street, our parish is providing volunteers to assist the City of Collinsville, the VFW and American Legion with set-up and clean-up. The project was organized by Collinsville residents Pat and Leonard Reitz after they saw a similar program in another state.

Around the Diocese Continuing

the Mission of

Charity

The Annual Catholic Services Appeal (ACSA) begins in Sep-tember. You will be receiving a letter from Bishop Paprocki with more information. This appeal funds most of the services in the Diocese and the impact is far-reaching. It includes Seminarian and Dea-con formation; support and re-sources for parish Faith For-mation, Youth Ministries, Mar-riage, Totus Tuus and March for Life Pilgrimage; support for social concerns including Black and Hispanic ministry, Project Rachel and Respect Life; and parish administration areas including insurance and pension plans, worker’s com-pensation and other insurance. If the Diocese did not provide many of these services, each parish would have to provide for them. So they would be expensive and in many cases would not be available due to limited resources. Centralizing them in the Diocese provides for more efficient operation at less cost. Our parish ACSA goal/assessment for 2016-2017 is $93,798. The appeal supports the many good works throughout the Di-ocese—only made possible through our support. During October and Novem-ber, you will be hearing more about ACSA—how it works and what it means to the peo-ple in our parish and Diocese.
