Mass!

From the Desk Of Fr. John Pentecost is the culmination of the Easter celebration…that is the Feast we celebrate this Sunday…May 20. Jesus has been preparing his disciples for His leaving them. But Jesus also prepared them for ‘another advocate’ to be with them…we recog-nize that promise and gift as ‘the Holy Spirit.’ It is the beginning of the Church and its formal mission to bring the Gospel to the whole world. The Mysteries of the Easter celebration move from the Passion, Death, Resurrection and As-cension of the Lord. We spread the whole cele-bration out over seven weeks…reflecting, pray-ing, contemplating the wonder of God’s love ex-pressed in the dying and rising of Jesus. We can revisit this mystery many times and never plumb the depths of God’s love expressed in the perfect self-gift of Jesus on the cross. Jesus told His disciples what it meant for them to be disciples… ‘This is my com-mandment…love one another as I love you.’ Jesus set the model for that love… ‘There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends…you are my friends.’ This is the quality of love that is to hold the community together. This is the quality and depth of the love we cele-brate in the Eucharist each time we gather. It is an ongoing growth into Jesus’ love and ex-pressing that love in practical and real ways to one another. When Jesus would finally appear to His disci-ples for the last time…he commissioned them…sent them into the world with the same mission the Father had entrusted to Him. We hear in Mark’s Gospel… ‘Go…proclaim the good news to all creation.’ It is the whole world…all the earth…that Jesus sends us as His Church and community of missionary disciples. We hear the story of the disciples gazing up-ward as the Lord ascended into heaven from their sight. The angels appeared to them and chided them as to why they were just standing there and looking up where Jesus had gone. The implication was that there was work to do…and they had better get busy.

This week we celebrate the fulfillment of the ‘Father’s Promise.’ It is the gift of the ‘Holy Spirit’ recounted for us in the first part of the Acts of the Apostles which is the second volume of Luke’s Gospel. It is the story of the presence of the Risen Christ working and active in the community of the newly formed Church. It really is the Gospel of the Holy Spirit. We must consider the whole of the mystery of Jesus’ death, resurrection and ascension…along with the promise and gift of the Holy Spir-it…as one celebration. In our Roman Rite we have spread out this wonder to contemplate its meaning and significance over seven weeks. It really is too much to celebrate in just one day or even one week. But that leaves us with the im-pression that we are commemorating historical events in the life of Christ…anniversaries of things that have happened. But that is not the case with our very rich liturgy. We celebrate the whole event of all of Christ’s saving deeds together…again and again as we hear the prayers of the liturgy spell out… ‘Therefore, O Lord, as we celebrate the memori-al of the saving Passion of your Son, His won-drous Resurrection and Ascension into heav-en…’ We can look and listen to John’s Gospel recounting… ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you…he breathed on them and said to them… Receive the Holy Spir-it.’ This all took place on Easter Sunday while the disciples were gathered behind locked doors out of fear. When we hear the accounts of the gift of the Spirit we can see a change and transformation of fearful disciples into missionary disciples. The movement of the Spirit moved them to see the implications of the life, death and resurrection of Christ. The implications for themselves and for all of humanity…the whole world. Remember each of the commands of Christ… ‘Go, make disciples of all nations…’ and also in Mark’s Gospel… ‘Go and proclaim the Good News to all of creation.’ The mission is to everyone and we are sent to fulfill that mission…sooo…we have our charge…now we need to do it!

Please pray for the following men and

women who are serving in our armed

ZIGGY’S WISDOM: How can my “faith life” be simple”? Where do I start? ZIGGY’S SUGGESTIONS: PRAY and align yourself with JESUS, every morning, as the Guide for your day. You have an “attentive Friend,” if only you say “YES” to Him.. What’s holding you back, just say…YES!

On select weekends throughout the year (usually one a month), we will have various resources (books, CDs, pam-phlets, etc.) available in the Gathering Space. These are FREE for you to use personally and share with family friends. The weekend of May 19-20 will feature a varie-ty of resources from Dynamic Catholic, infor-mation relating to Pro-Life and other resources. So stop by and pick up these resources that can help you grow your spiritual life.

Attention All Mothers

Imagine receiving a makeover that not only promised to make you more beautiful, but sof-tened the rough edges of your per-sonality, helped you gain control of your emotions, better manage your rela-tionships, and grow in wisdom. And what if it could actu-ally make you happy?

Sounds too good to be true, right? Yet every woman can experience this makeover with the gift of motherhood. Along with your new bundle of joy, there are real rewards just waiting to be claimed. Motherhood is difficult—there’s no getting around it. And yet, the challenges a woman fac-es when she becomes a mother don’t have to be in vain. Instead of a series of frustrating, ex-hausting, or exasperating experiences, author Carrie Gress (a mother of four young children) sees daily life as an opportunity to grow grace-fully as a woman, mother, wife, and friend.

A Graduate’s Guide to Life If you know someone graduating from college soon, be sure and pick up the new CD “A Grad-uate’s Guide to Life.” It focuses on the three things they don’t teach you in college that could make all the difference in your life.
