From the Desk Of Fr. John Our parish community continues to reach out and support one another…despite all the challenges. Thank you everyone for the love and support you have shown to each other. Many folks tune into our ‘live streaming’ of Sunday Mass…as well as…the Wednesday Morning prayer and Mass. People keep telling me that these have been a great help to them. The ‘Rosary Club’…that is just a nickname…for those who gather at the computer or on their phones to be with and pray with members of the parish…they dial-in (425-436-6386 then access code 219053#; online https://join.freeconferencecall.com/bradleyhill) and pray together. The little banter…the catch-up time spent before we formally start keeps everyone in-formed and in-touch with each other…and sometimes with the pets in the background. We face another challenge with greater cautions and restrictions from the State and County Offi-cials…trying to keep everyone safe…so please…follow the guidelines…wash your hands…wear the face mask…keep proper social distance…and avoid crowds and large gatherings. Thank you for caring for yourself…and others…with these simple steps to help curb the spread of COVID 19. Some families have had to postpone…a wedding…several funer-als…and drastically reduce another funeral celebra-tion…so our hearts go out to them as they face all these things without the normal support systems to be with them and comfort them. We keep them in our prayers. Sometimes we get things…and then there are times that we miss the boat…and both of these were part of Peter’s response to Jesus’ question… ‘Who do you say that I am’? We got the first part two weeks ago… ‘You are the Christ…the Son of the Liv-ing God’…and last week the second half…when Pe-ter misunderstood Jesus’ true mission arguing that He should not have to suffer. Jesus had to make it very clear… ‘Get behind Me…you are an obstacle to Me…You are thinking not as God…but as human beings do!’ Wow…that was clear…and probably shocked good ole St. Peter. Jesus would not stop there…and He did not send Peter off because of his misunderstanding. Jesus would try to help His disciples understand His mis-sion…and we get to benefit from their mistake by lis-tening in…and teach them about true discipleship…and guide them and us in their/our response to His call and their/our mission. Jesus…invites HIs disci-ples…just as He did with Peter…to get behind Him…

in other words…to resume following Him as a disciple rather than going it alone…on our own way. Jesus simply said… ‘Whoever wishes to come after Me…must deny himself…take up his cross…and follow Me.’ Our culture seems to measure everything by how much we have…get…own…use…and the list could go on-and-on. Jesus gives us a new insight to real happiness…things will not satisfy…but only the rela-tionship with the One who made us for Himself…and we are restless…until we rest in Him (St. Augustine). Jesus has tried to form us into a community that is ready to give everything to the mission…even to the point of death on the cross. We are called to such a unique kind of life made up of…sharing…giving…loving…forgiving. How do we handle those difficult times when differences…failures…and downright sin and hurt enter the community? Jesus addresses the need to bring healing and forgiveness to a community and relationships that have been hurt or wounded through personal failure and sin. Each member is to care deeply for the good of their members…all of them. They are to re-spond to them with the deepest charity (love) that they can muster. It means reaching out to them…, which can be a risky business…and make the effort to bring healing to the situation and relationship…it is for the good of the whole community…and not just a personal matter. The healing can happen in steps and stages…, which we earnestly pray for…, and make the efforts in char-ity/love toward the good of the other…striving for the best outcome…the best version of ourselves and the best for them. We reach out to the other…in greatest respect…not shaming them in front of others…which never works…but offering our loving support that real change may happen. Love is the key to this healing and restoration…just as Jesus extended to His way-ward disciples. Peace!

Men’s Retreat: “The Greatest Love of All”

Men, did you have to postpone your annual retreat from earlier this year, or just need some time away for spiritual refreshment? The King's house is presenting a previously unscheduled retreat September 11-13. The theme is “The Greatest Love of All”. Registra-tion is limited to accommodate strict social distancing for safety reasons. Call 618-397-0584, or go to http://www.kingsretreatcenter.org to register. Join Deacon Jim for a close-by weekend of renewal.

The current COVID-19 pandemic caused the cancelation of the Holy Land collection normally held on Good Friday. You can place your gift in an envelope marked “Holy Land.”

The Christian communities in the Holy Land, also exposed to the risk of contagion and living in contexts already full of seri-ous sufferings, benefit every year from the generosity of the faithful from all over the world. This solidarity enables them to con-tinue their evangelical presence, in addi-tion to maintaining schools and social structures that assist all citizens with healthcare, education and peaceful coex-istence, attending above all to the weakest and poorest. For this reason, Pope Francis has ap-proved the collection for the Holy Land, to take place on September 12–13, near the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. The celebration that commemorates the discovery of the Relics of the Cross by Saint Helen also marks a new beginning of pub-lic worship in Jerusalem, with the con-struction of the Basilica of the Holy Sepul-chre. May it be a sign of hope and salva-tion, as well as solidarity with those who continue to live the Gospel of Jesus on the Land where "it all began."
