From the Desk Of Fr. John Happy Easter! In the midst of all that is going on…we find ourselves singing ‘Alleluia…Christ is Risen as He said…He is Risen In-deed!’ Our Lord Jesus embraced our human con-dition…even in suffering and in death. He raised up our human condition…from the death of Ad-am…to new life in Christ…through His perfect act of love and obedience to the will of the Fa-ther...joining it/us to His divine nature. The challenges we face today…may seem over-whelming. They are very difficult to say the least…and very tragic for many. We try to reach out to others to offer support and encourage-ment…yet are hindered by the need to stay a safe distance from one another to protect our-selves and those we love. Many have found cre-ative ways to stay in touch…communicating through various different media. Keep it up…call…text…and use whatever means that will of-fer that loving and caring support we all need. ‘Social Distancing’ was not a term most of us had ever really heard of…or thought about…until this Pandemic struck the world. But it has proved to be helpful in slowing down the process of spread-ing the virus any further into society. We all are familiar with the common cold…and we try to keep it from infecting our households. This is so much more serious…and…it is deadly! We need to be sensitive and aware of our part in this whole effort…to protect everyone from being in-fected. We trust in the Lord…and His provident care for us…but we do not test him…or try to prove something by risking ourselves, or the wellbeing of others. We turn to the Lord in prayer…knowing that Jesus responded to the cry for help from all corners of the society of his day…beggars…the blind…a royal official…and the list goes on and on. We Christians cry out for our world which is suffering and trust that He alone can help us…even while we use all the medical and social means at our disposal…they are God-given gifts to help us. Turning to Easter again…the challenges and

the sorrow the early disciples and followers of Jesus must have experienced at His death had to be overwhelming. Everything seemed to be lost…and all hopes crushed. But the Lord opened them to the wonder of Jesus’ resurrec-tion. It would not be easy to accept…or to be-lieve…but it was real. The Gospels give us some insight into the pro-cess of growing in faith…of coming to belief in Jesus’ resurrection. At the Easter Vigil…the Holy Night of Saturday which leads into the dawn of Easter Joy…the Gospel of Matthew was pro-claimed. The tomb of Jesus had been secured…and sealed…since, according to Matthew’s ac-count…there was fear on the part of the religious leaders that the followers of Jesus might try to steal His body and claim that He had risen from the dead. The leaders had even placed guards at the tomb so that nothing would happen that would give credence to Jesus ‘story.’ But none of those things could hold back God’s gracious gift and His plan for our redemption. Matthew tells us…that Mary Magdalene and the other Mary…came to the tomb…and there was an earthquake…an angel from heaven…the stone was rolled back…and the guards were stuck with fear as though they were dead men. In the midst of all that…the angel spoke to the women… ‘Do not be afraid!...I know that you are seeking Jesus the crucified. He is not here, for He has been raised…come see the place where He lay.’ We receive this Good News with joy…and yet we have questions…just as those who first encoun-tered this whole mystery. We are able to see and hear though their experience and their testimony. The resurrection is real…Jesus is alive…He is glorified! With this Good News…we hear the echo of the Angel’s message… ‘Do not be afraid…He has been raised!’ We face all of life’s trials with new faith and trust. Jesus is Risen…and He sends us to all of our brothers and sisters…with a mes-sage of hope and joy… ‘He is Risen indeed!’

It was specifically with those most vulnerable among us in mind that Bishop Paprock called for our entire diocesan commu-nity to engage together in a fast from the Eucharistic for the sake of the physical and spiritual healing of all those in our diocese, nation, and world. Prior to his election as Pope Benedict XVI, Cardinal Ratzinger wrote, "Since apos-tolic times, no doubt, the fast from the Eucharist on Good Friday was a part of the Church's spirituality of com-munion. This renunciation of communion on one of the most sacred days of the Church's year was a particularly pro-found way of sharing in the Lord's Passion; it was the Bride's mourning for the lost Bridegroom (cf. Mk 2:20). Today too, I think, fasting from the Eucharist, really taken seri-ously and entered into ... could lead to a deepening of personal relationship with the Lord in the sacrament."

Bishop Paprocki encouraged us to embrace this moment as a spiritual fast, as Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI described, with the intention of an end to the spread of the Coronavirus, for the healing of those afflicted by it, and for strength for those who are providing care for the afflicted. “I also pray that this Eucharistic fast will draw us closer to our Lord and culti-vate a hunger and new appreciation for the Blessed Sacrament.”

An Act of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that You are present

in the Most Holy Sacrament.

I love You above all things,

and I desire to receive You into my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment

receive You sacramentally,

come at least spiritually into my heart. I

embrace You as if You were already there

and unite myself wholly to You. Never

permit me to be separated from You.

Amen.

Engage in ‘Fast from the Eucharist’

Collinsville Food Pantry Needs

Donations The Collinsville Food Pantry is continu-ing to operate during the pandemic. Our St. Vincent DePaul Society is closed and members are working with the food pan-try, including taking over SVDPS clients. The Food Pantry has stopped receiving any donations from the community to try and limit exposure and the passing of the virus on donated items. The Food Pantry requests only monetary dona-tions so it can order in bulk directly from the warehouse to limit the number of people who come into contact with the food items. To donate go to https://collinsvillefoodpantry.org/ and scroll down until you see the DONATE button. Or you can always mail a check to Collinsville Food Pantry, 201 E. Church, Collinsville, IL 62234. Pantry days are Tuesdays and Fridays as be-fore, but patrons have been limited to once a month instead of twice to limit exposure. Patrons are not being allowed to shop. They give their name at the door and are handed their food through the door. They are not allowed in the building.

Volunteers and employees are limited to 10 per the rules. Between the employees and their reg-ular volunteers, this has been adequate so far. Since March 13 (the first Pantry Day after the 10 person rule) through March 24 (represents three Pantry Days), the Food Pantry has serviced 200 families representing 383 people. This equates to the number served in a whole month! The homeless people in town are being provided sack meals M-F at both the Township Office and the Food Pantry. The Food Pantry is providing sack meals to every patron and the number of people living in their home on pantry days. Alt-hough this isn't the hot meal our patrons are used to at S.O.S., they are at least getting a meal.

As we all struggle through the vari-ous trials of the pandemic--one of the most momentous events in world history—we can take heart in at least one positive it brings us. For most of us that is a chance to slow down, to stop and spend some quiet time with God. There is no better way to build a personal relationship with Jesus than spending time with Him. There are many ways including Scripture reading, spiritual books, and prayers. But the best way is just being in His presence. God gives us trials to bring us closer to Him. Many people say that surrendering to God in the midst of trials has brought them His peace, grace and love to get through the trials and grow closer to Him. Following are some spiritual strategies from the Ignatian Spirituality website (ignatianspirituality.com) to help you get through the trials of the pandemic.

By Marina McCoy 1. Pray. God is listening. I firmly believe that God is with us, as close as we are to ourselves, and even closer. When I pray, I wait for God to reply, not always knowing how God will reply, but trusting that God will. When I pray for others, such as my mother who lives in another state, I know that they are with me in the time of prayer, as much as if they were in the same room. In God’s pres-ence, we are all united. 2. Stay connected. I was recently in a self-quarantine for 14 days af-ter my husband fell ill with flu-like symptoms after we returned from Europe. (We are all healthy now.) I found that staying connected through vid-eo programs like Zoom, Skype, or Google Meet, or texting or phone calls, were all great ways to stay in relationship with others beyond my quar-antine. Human beings are social and need con-nection.

3. Reach out. Not ill or self-quarantined? See what the neighbors need. We can still practice social distancing by starting a group chat with the peo-ple on our block. When I could not go out, a friend of mine dropped some flowers and a bottle of wine at our house. Social distancing does not mean the end of service. 4. Be grateful. There is always something for which to be grateful. Always. As I write this, both of my adult chil-dren are home with us, and

healthy. I am grateful for the shared conversa-tion, the shared meals, and for everyone’s health. Gratitude gives us perspective. 5. Slow down. I have often wished I had more time for contem-plation. Be careful what I wish for! In all serious-ness, however, more time to contemplate and watch the SUNRISE or look at a beautiful tree through my backyard window brings me a sense of peace. Baking bread takes more time than buying it but helps me to stay in the moment while also nurturing others. Perhaps slowing down is a hidden gift. 6. Engage in meaningful work. Monks have always known this: we need a balance of work, prayer, and leisure in life. I am a teacher so have been putting energy into teaching my university students through remote platforms, holding office hours, and finding crea-tive new ways to help my students to grow and learn. Even for those who are retired or otherwise not employed, tasks like baking, minor household projects that have been put off, or organizing photos into albums can be meaningful work. 7. Love. Love is contagious. Love, St. Ignatius says, is shown in deeds, not only in words. But it also helps to tell the people whom we love, that we love them. How do you want to share love today?

Slow Down...Connect with God

Divine Mercy

The Promises of Divine Mercy

Sunday

The Sunday after Easter is Di-vine Mercy Sunday. In many revelations to St. Faustina, the Lord Jesus did not only define the place of the feast in the li-turgical calendar, but also the reason for its institution, the

way it should be prepared, and celebrated. He also spoke about the great promis-es. The greatest of them is the grace of complete for-giveness of sins and punish-ment. lt is connected with Ho-ly Communion received on that day, following a good Confession (without any at-tachment to the smallest sin), in the spirit of the devotion to the Divine Mercy, that is, trusting God and loving your neighbor actively.
