FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT ~ MARCH 1, 2020

    FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Having just begun another Lent, what shall we make of it? Or, better, what shall it make of us?

Lent is a time when the Church urges us to make sacrifices, such as moderating our diets or deliberately giving up good things. Why? Scott Hahn, one of the most notable Catholic recruits of recent times, and a splendid contributor to Catholic life by his brilliant writings, explains why admirably, when he says that

… we follow the Lenten custom of fasting by “giving something up,” preferably a favorite food or pastime to which we are unduly attached. We may also stop eating between meals, or skip dessert, or forgo second helpings. We return it all to God for forty days, not because any of it is “bad,” but because it is indeed very good. Only good things should be offered in sacrifice to God; only the best of the harvest could be offered as a tithe. We give them to God so that we learn not to put anything in God’s place in our lives.

St. Paul, writing to the Christians of ancient Corinth, compared our need to challenge ourselves to do demanding things to the training an athlete devotes himself to:

Do you not know that in a race all the runners compete, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. Well, I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air; but I pommel my body and subdue it, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified” (1 Cor 9, 24-26).

On this first Sunday of Lent we are urged to join Jesus in the desert, where he undergoes a strenuous temptation. It is good for us, when we have to contend with the temptations that inevitably assail us, to recall the words of the Letter to the Hebrews that remind us that

… we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has similarly been tested in every way, yet without sin (Heb 4, 15).

The Lord knows how we are tempted from his own (continued above)

experience and is always ready and eager to help us in our own trials, no matter how acutely they may vex us. And if we do have the misfortune to fall into sins, even of the gravest sort, God’s vast mercy is not only there for us to cry out for but is gladly given to us, a heartening reality the fourth-century writer Synesius of Cyrene extolled in a greatly moving way:

Lord Jesus, think on me And purge away my sin; From earthborn passions set me free And make me pure within. … Lord Jesus, think on me, Nor let me go astray; Through darkness and perplexity Point out the heavenly way.

Additionally, Lent is about renewing the supernatural life God first gave us in baptism. As we pray for our parish’s candidates who are preparing to receive the sacraments in their journey of the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults, may we also experience a resurgence of that all-important life. The promise of spring is already unfolding in the realm of nature, and can be a lively reminder of the new growth God’s grace offers us.

    Msgr. David Hubba

At that time Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. He fasted for forty days and forty nights …. Matt 4: 1-2

SAD NEWS It is with deepest sadness that we share the news that our beloved parish musician and friend, Peter Greco, passed away suddenly on February 22nd. Peter not only blessed our parish

with his gentle, kind and caring presence, he also graced our liturgies and services with his incredible talent. (He played thirteen different musical instruments by ear). Peter served Saint Joseph Church and its parishioners for decades. His glorious music enhanced our worship, delighted us in concert, supported us in sorrow and helped us to celebrate so many happy moments in the life of our parish. Peter’s gentleness of spirit and extraordinary God-given talents have been a blessing beyond measure to all those who have been fortunate enough to know him. Our hearts are broken. A special tribute to Peter Greco will appear in next week’s parish bulletin. May eternal rest grant unto his soul, O Lord, and may perpetual light shine on him.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “It is written: The Lord, your God, shall you worship and him alone shall you serve.” Matthew 4:10 Tempted between the riches and power of this world and service to God, Jesus chose service to His Father. If we wish to truly follow Jesus, we, too, must decide to turn away from worldly power and riches and put God at the center of our lives. Lent is our time to prune ourselves of earthly things.
