_________________________________________________ Catechetical Sunday:

What does the Word “Catechetical” mean?

Fr. Orosco will commission and bless all catechists at the 10:30am Mass on Sunday, October 11th. The root word of “catechetical” is “catechesis,” from a Greek word meaning “to echo, or resound.” Catechesis is the act of resounding or bringing the Church’s teachings to the world. Catechists are those who teach in the name of the Church. Why do we have a special day to commission catechists?

Catechesis is a distinct and special ministry in the Church. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church makes clear, “Catechesis is intimately bound up with the whole of the Church’s life…her inner growth and correspondence with God’s plan depend essentially on catechesis” (#7). The ministry of teaching in the name of the Church has a profound dignity, which is why catechists are formally commissioned by the Church. On this day the Church highlights this ministry and invites the entire church community to think about our responsibility, because of our baptism, to share our faith with others.

Safe Environment Training Two Safe Environment training sessions have been scheduled for all new volunteers working in ministries that involve children, youth, or vulnerable adults. Volunteers only need to attend one session. If you have submitted a screening form, but have not attended the Safe Environment training, please try to attend one of the following sessions. Volunteers will only be allowed to help when they have completed their screening. Training is a part of the screening.

Daytime Session: Thursday, October 8th, 10:00am – noon, in the Parish Center.

Evening Session: Thursday, October 8th, from 6:30pm – 8:00pm, in the Parish Center.

Twenty-Seventh Week of Ordinary Time

On the Twenty-seventh Sunday of Ordinary Time the readings speak of marriage and partnership. In the Book of Genesis, Adam does not find a suitable partner until the Lord creates woman. Psalm 128 praises the Lord who blesses home and family. In Mark's Gospel the Pharisees test Jesus asking if it is lawful for a husband to divorce his wife. The question is meant to be a trap for Jesus but he repeats the scripture in Genesis. The gospel ends with Jesus urging us to be like children were in that society - unimportant and with no status. “The kingdom of God belongs to such as these.” Then he embraced and blessed the children.

Wednesday is the Memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary.

The first readings this week offer again a sampling of several different Old Testament sources including the reluctant prophet, Jonah; then Malachi (“But for you who fear my name, there will arise the sun of justice with its healing rays”); and Joel, (“Then shall you know that I, the LORD, am your God, dwelling on Zion, my holy mountain; Jerusalem shall be holy, and strangers shall pass through her no more.”)

Luke's Gospel continues during the weekdays with some of our most familiar and beloved stories. The Good Samaritan teaches us about loving. In the Mary and Martha story, Jesus nudges his dear friend Martha to calm her spirit and choose carefully what she spends time on. Luke offers a look at Jesus praying alone before sharing his prayer with us. With the story of the friend banging on the door in the night, Jesus encourages us to “ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” When his opponents try to confuse the people about Jesus' authority, he says, “Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.” We end the week with Jesus emphasizing his relationship with the Father as being stronger than earthly relationships. ______________________________________
