COORDINATING PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

LENTEN CHALLENGE Last Wednesday marked the beginning of the Lenten season, a forty day period of preparation for Easter. Our schools celebrated the occasion with solemn liturgies which included the distribution of ashes. The ashes are a powerful sign of our own mortality and are created by burning blessed palms used on the previous Palm Sunday. As the ashes are placed on our forehead we are reminded “to turn away from sin and be faithful to the gospel”. Lent is a time for spiritual renewal and repentance. Repentance means the rejection of sin. It implies conversion to and reconciliation with God. During Lent we are encouraged to do penance by going without some things we enjoy and using the money we save to make donations to help the materially poor through “Project Compassion”. Even though it can be a struggle for many families “to make ends meet”, we are among the most fortunate in terms of material wealth. We witness to the compassion that Jesus Christ expects of his followers by helping the poor. Pope Francis reminds us in his Lenten message that our efforts must also “be directed to ending violations of human dignity, discrimination and abuse in the world, for these are so often the cause of destitution. When power, luxury and money become idols, they take priority over the need for a fair distribution of wealth. Our consciences thus need to be converted to justice, equality, simplicity and sharing”. When we enter into the spirit of Lent and make a genuine sacrifice to assist others the effect is twofold. Others benefit from our generosity and we benefit by the act of giving for “it is in giving that we receive”, as we become more Christ-like and more loving human beings. Mr Jim O’Brien Coordinating Principal

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

As I contemplate our upcoming Year 10 retreats next week, I can’t help but feel blessed by the generosity of St Joseph’s Regional College staff who will give so much of their time away from their families to enrich our students’ experiences at the retreats. On behalf of the College community, thank you to the following staff who will attend the retreats at either Bonny Hills or Camp Obadiah. To Mrs Helen Gilbert, Mrs Cath Eichmann and Mr Frank Johnston who will facilitate the retreats, along with Mrs Nicole Prior, Mr Mitch Robins, Miss Amy Chaloner, Mrs Tobi Harris, Mrs Debbie Hill, Mr Michael Morson, Mr Colin Mackay, Mr Bruce Smith, Mr Chris Delaney, Ms Sonia West, Mrs Lisa Mahon, Mrs Hannah O’Brien, Mr Daniel O’Mullane, Mr Paul Redfern, Mr Kim Eichmann, Miss Jessica Wright, Mrs Penny McKee, Mrs Kelly Biddle, Mr Michael Walsh, Mr Richard Battiston, Mr Matt Cato, Mr John Rossington and Mr Jeremy Buckley.

Recently, Pope Francis commented on the vocations of educators in Catholic schools. In the context of St Joseph’s Regional College staff, his words are very affirming of our mission here at the College.

I commend to you an extract from Pope Francis’ words:

To educate is an act of love, it is to give life. And love is demanding, it calls for the best resources, for a reawakening of the passion to begin this path patiently with young people. The educator in catholic schools must be, first and foremost, competent and qualified but, at the same time, someone who is rich in humanity and capable of being with young people in a style of pedagogy that helps promote their human and spiritual growth. Youth are in need of quality teaching along with values that are not only articulated but witnessed to. Consistency is an indispensable factor in the education of young peoples! Consistency! We cannot grow and we cannot educate without consistency; consistency and witness!

Year 7 Reflection Day This week has been a significant one for Year 7 students’ journeys at St Joseph’s Regional College. Last Friday, students travelled to St Agnes’ Church and the Youth Hub for their Reflection Day. Students then had the opportunity to meet with our College Chaplain, Fr. James Forster who talked to the students about important aspects of the Eucharist celebration and the significant features of St Agnes Church. Several members of St Agnes’ Parish community spoke to the students about their role in ministry and how they themselves can embrace new opportunities to be a witness.

Thank you to Mrs Helen Gilbert and Ms Sonia West who were the primary organisers of the Year 7 Reflection Day. Thank you also to Mr Phil Shelley, Mrs Kay Curran, Mr Michael Walsh, Mr Adrian Ryan, Mr Richard Battiston, Mrs Jane Rundle, Mr Jason Berry, Ms Jackie Howard and Miss Stephanie Figgins.

God Bless Jim Dempsey College Principal

NEWS FROM OUR LEADER OF CATECHESIS AND EVANGELISATION

Year 11 Reflection Day This week all Year 11 students will be participating in a reflection day at the college. This is an important day for the students and we consider it a normal compulsory day of attendance. We are hoping to provide the students with a day to reflect on making informed decisions, setting priorities, relationships and directions they are taking in their lives. God calls us to be the best person we can be with all the gifts we have been given. This is a day to reflect on who we are and how God can assist us on our journey of self-discovery. Senior PC teachers will be facilitating the day along with our guest speaker David Kobler from Choicez Media. David is also running a parent information session at Mackillop Senior College on Tuesday evening March 18th from 6:30-8pm. Thank you to the Year 11 Pastoral Coordinator, Mr David Lewis, for organising the day’s activities. I’m sure it will be an enriching day for all the students. Please visit the Choicez Media website for more information.

Year 10 Retreat The annual Year 10 retreats are also occurring this coming week at Bonny Hills and Camp Obadiah. These days are usually a highlight of the school year for teachers and students. Teachers have been busy planning and preparing the retreat with the theme “Being a Witness to the Gospel Message.” This is a wonderful opportunity for students to reflect on their personal faith journey, their relationship with God and the importance of significant others in their lives. Thank you to the Year 10 Pastoral Coordinator, Mr Frank Johnson, and Mrs Helen Gilbert who are overseeing the facilitating and organisation of these retreats.

Year 7 Parents Parents, please mark Tuesday April 8th on your calendar. The Year 7 students and families are invited to a prayer service from 6:30pm - 7:30pm at St Agnes’ Church. Year 7 students will be involved in the planning, preparation and participation of this evening which concludes this first unit of study in the Religious Education program.

The Australian Childhood Vision Impairment Register

The Australian Childhood Vision Impairment Register is hosted by the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children and is supported by Vision Australia and Guide Dogs. It is the first national register of children in Australia with vision impairment. The Register has been collecting data since 2009, and this data is providing important information about the types of eye disease

and vision disorders children have and the support they need. The data is also used by service providers and researchers. Data is stored securely and no child can be identified in any way when the data is released.

Families are invited to register their child (aged 0-18 years) if they have vision impairment in both eyes which has been diagnosed by an eye specialist or ophthalmologist. Registration can be completed by contacting Register staff on (02) 9872 0303, or by visiting the VI Family Network website at: www.vifamilynetwork.org.au. The website also provides information on eyes and vision; family support; education and related issues; braille and low vision aids; technology supporting vision impairment; newsletters from Australian low vision agencies and support groups, useful websites; and news and events that might interest families across Australia.

MATHEMATICS NEWS TODAY IS INTERNATIONAL PI DAY

The Australian Mathematics Trust and The staff at the Regional College wish every student a happy International Pi Day.

International Pi day is the celebration of one of the most recognisable mathematical symbols. International Pi Day is celebrated on March 14th (3.14) ie 3rd month 14th day Pi (Greek letter “π”) is the symbol used in mathematics to represent the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — which is approximately 3.14159. Pi is a constant number, meaning that for all circles of any size, Pi will be the same value. The number Pi is extremely useful when solving problems involving circles, but also appears in many other applications of mathematics Handy Hint: Remembering Pi Most of the time, Pi is recognised as 3.14 but for additional accuracy 3.14159 is used. A good way to remember this longer number is to count the number of letters in each word of this phrase.
