COORDINATING PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

AVOIDING OVERINDULGENCE

Parenting is certainly a challenge in a society that puts so much pressure on consumers to look good, have what you want and do what you want when you want it.

Every parent wants the best for their children, but finding the balance between providing them with all they need to achieve their potential, while avoiding the pitfall of overindulgence, is a constant balancing act. It is usually easier to give in and say “yes” than it is to deny and say “no”.

Author Jean Illsley Clark, in her book “How Much is Enough”, has some thoughts on this dilemma. She makes the following points on overindulgence:

it is giving too much of what looks good, too soon, too long. It is giving children things and

experiences that are not appropriate for their age or their interests and talents. It is attempting

to satisfy children with things that are for adults;

it is doing or having so much of something that it does active harm or at least prevents the

child from developing normally; and

it is also a form of child neglect as it hinders children from performing their needed

developmental tasks and from learning necessary life lessons.

Parents often justify overindulgence because they don’t want them to feel deprived in any way, especially if they had to go without as a child. However, this kind of pampering leads to self-centredness and an intolerance for discomfort and disappointment.

As parents and grandparents we need to love our children unconditionally. This does not mean giving them all they want, or trying to save them from normal experiences which teach children to delay gratification and exercise self-discipline. To achieve the best outcomes for children parents need both wisdom and courage to confront inappropriate demands and create an environment where love and care are visible and felt. Mr Jim O’Brien Coordinating Principal

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

On Saturday evening St Joseph’s Regional College welcomed Year 12 graduands, parents, friends and staff to our annual Graduation Evening. Senior Coordinator Mr Bruce Smith, Assistant Principal, Mrs Cath Eichmann and Mr Jim O’Brien welcomed our official guests which included: our Parish Priest, Fr Leo Donnelly, College Chaplain, Fr James Forster, Mayor Peter Besseling and his wife Megan, and Coordinating Executive Officer for Parish Education, Mr John McQueen. At our graduation we paid special tribute to Jim O’Brien in his attendance at his last Graduation Ceremony as Coordinating Principal. When Jim recently addressed a College assembly, he spoke of his love for the “Regional” which has spanned over the past five decades. Jim’s contribution to our College community is without precedent. We will look forward to formally acknowledging Jim’s generous service at the end of the year. On the evening we celebrated and honoured the contributions of 89 fine young adults. The evening marked a significant milestone in the history of our College, as this was the first cohort of students to commence their education at the new College site. Over the past six years, they have played a significant role in the formation of new College traditions.

Page 3: St Joseph's Regional College News T4, Wk7 21st November 2014

This was also a great occasion for many parents, who I’m sure were feeling deservedly proud, and somewhat relieved, that their sons and daughters HSC journey is finally over. I would particularly like to acknowledge our parents who made such a valuable contribution to the Graduation Committee. Thank you to Ally Coyne, Rachel Caughlan, Anne Turner, Carolyn Burley, Leanne Parker, Nancye Hughes, Cindy Dreelan and Karen Walsh. Finally we have many of our staff members who came along to support our wonderful young people celebrating the culmination of being educated in at our great Catholic College. We are fortunate to have such committed and caring teachers and support staff at St Joseph’s Regional College. I would especially like to thank staff members who took so much of their free time in setting up the venue for the evening. Thank you to: Bruce Smith, Cheryl Hyde, Helen Gilbert, Bronwyn Shipton, Jessica Wright, Leanne Tinsey, Claire Gerke and Kellie Croft

Subject and Excursion Fees

I would like to thank the many families who make significant sacrifices in prioritising the payment of College Service fees and Parish Tuition fees. This is, without doubt, a strong endorsement of the work we do here at St Joseph’s Regional College in the formation of our students ‘to become the best possible people they can be’.

As we approach the conclusion of Semester 2 at the College, I would request continued attentiveness to keeping accounts up-to-date. In this respect, I would remind families (as per my letter at the beginning of the year) that the College is not able to distribute reports if accounts are not

Page 4: St Joseph's Regional College News T4, Wk7 21st November 2014

paid and outstanding library books have not been returned. In this respect, I am very conscious of avoiding any embarrassing moments for families, and would ask if you are in a situation where you cannot pay an account, then it is imperative that you contact me to make an alternative arrangement.

With regard to major projects in Timber Technologies & Metal Technologies, these fees must be paid prior to major works being released.

God Bless

Jim Dempsey College Principal

END OF YEAR PROGRAM

Year 7-11 Exams In an effort to keep students engaged in learning for a greater proportion of Term 4, Semester 2, Year 7-11 examinations are being conducted from Wednesday, 3rd December (Week 9) to Tuesday, 9th December (Week 10) for Years 7-10 while Year 11 exams will continue to Friday, 12th December. Having the exams later in the term has proven to be very successful as students were on task for longer and we made best use of the teaching and learning time in Term 4. These dates have been advertised in the parent calendar. A copy of the exam timetable is included in this newsletter. Post-Exam Student Leave From Wednesday, 10th December to Friday, 12th December three Post-Exam Student Leave non-class days for students have been scheduled, to enable staff to complete marking, collate marks, prepare reports and awards. Students who have not completed all exams will do so on these days. Supervision will be available at the College for any student whose parent is not able to supervise them at home during the non-class days.

Research confirms the importance of feedback from teachers for effective student learning. Students will return to school from Monday, 15th December until Thursday, 18th December to review exam papers, receive reports and attend academic award ceremonies. These days are compulsory for all students. Dates to Remember:

ENGLISH NEWS ‘In a world of strange scenarios, august characters and complex plots, fifteen Year Eight students from St Joseph’s Regional College must write their way through a maze of words, imagination, and sweat. Can they emerge jubilant and change the lives of those around them?’ This isn’t a blurb from the back of an adventure book, but from the Writer’s Workshop at Bonny Hills held last week. Invited Year Eight students from St Paul’s Kempsey, St Paul’s Port Macquarie and St Joseph’s Regional College were challenged by the notion of Futuristic Writing, and were able to choose from a range of scenarios such as desertification and social isolation to construct their futuristic narratives in. Mrs Anne Twomey and I were blessed to be in the thick of plot weaving with other teachers from the two schools and we look forward to this initiative by the Catholic Schools Office continuing with our future Stephen Kings and Suzanne Collins’ next year. Congratulations to the following students who were selected to attend this unique camp; Addison Leighton, Rylee Parry, Alisha Newbound, Rachel Walton, Hannah Garven, Torren Hunter, Liz Pike, Melinda Burke, Jess Gardiner, Tayla Cook, Michael Barnes, Dylan Mason, Zac Dorahy, Reuben Gammon and Michelle Shoobert. TECHNOLOGY NEWS

ATTENTION CURRENT YEAR 9 - YEAR 10 TECHNOLOGY OPTIONS FOR 2015

All Year 10 students in 2015 will be required to bring their own device (iPad or laptop) next year. The device you choose to bring may depend on your future path of study in Years 11/12 as well as your own preference. To assist students and parents to consider the options, a website has been setup specifically to deal with this. The link is http://go2school.wix.com/year102015 This can also be accessed via the Quicklinks section of the College website

Options, policies, tips for home, how to order a school laptop and more can all be accessed from this site. There is also a contact form if you have any further queries.

This week's tip

Sometimes technology can be too invasive and antisocial. Sometimes it feels like our lives are controlled by technology instead of the other way round. It might be time to take control! Set aside a particular day, say Sunday, as a device free day. Have the family agree to turn off all phones, iPads, iPods, laptops, Xboxes, Playstations, TV, etc for the day (or at least a major part of the day). Make the effort to do a family activity that does not involve these devices e.g. go for a picnic, a bushwalk, a day at the beach or a sporting activity. It's all about balance

November is Picture Book Month November is celebrated annually in Library land as being “Picture Book Month”. Some may question why a secondary school library has Picture Books amongst its collection. I love this quote from the official Picture Book Month website (www.picturebookmonth.com) because I think it encapsulates so much about the never-ending debate about print vs non-print. In this digital age where people are predicting the coming death of print books, picture books (the print kind) need love. And the world needs picture books. There’s nothing like the physical page turn of a beautifully crafted picture book. So please consider a Picture Book amongst your November reads, and savour the ‘beautiful craft’ that has produced it. New Reads Take a look at our October Pinterest Board to see some of the new additions to the Library collection. http://www.pinterest.com/sjrcexchange/october-2014-reads/ Years 7-10 Students in Years 7-10 are encouraged to start collecting their text and Library books together in readiness for a quick return after the exams in Weeks 9 and 10. There will be several opportunities for students to return books, such as Library staff visiting PC rooms with a trolley, and Library staff with a trolley being available in the Lockers area at certain times. However, ultimately it is the responsibility of every student to return their books in good condition. We are looking forward to a seamless end-of-year textbook return period. Please note the following key dates:

28th November Library borrowing suspended for Years 7-10. 5th December Year 10 books due back by 3.15pm. 9th December Years 7-9 books due back by 3.15pm. Sign-out Procedure If a student departs the College, they must collect a sign-out sheet from the College office. One requirement of every student is that they return all textbooks and Library books to the Library, and it is the student’s responsibility to check classroom cupboards, not the teachers, or Library staff. Many thanks to all those who complete this requirement promptly. Like us on FaceBook – St Joseph’s Regional College Library. Follow us on Twitter – @sjrcexchange Karen Bale Teacher Librarian

Any student available to assist between 11:00am and 3:00pm on Sunday the 23rd November, please email Julie Preston [email protected]. All student volunteers will receive a certificate of community service recognition for their contributions in making the day most enjoyable for our Joey’s kids.

ROWING REPORT The College Rowing Team attended the Central District Rowing Association Sprint Championships at Throsby Creek, in Newcastle, on Sunday 16th November. This is a regatta where all races are sprints, over 400 meters. This makes for an exciting and action packed day with over 160 races. The weather on the day was not kind; freezing cold in the morning followed by rain then turning hot with very strong westerly winds. Our team performed extremely well, winning both the boys and girls D grade Quad Sculls, the boys under 16 Single Scull final and the girls under 17 Single Scull final. It was also great to see our parents have a few races. All in all, a great day.
