Message from Director of Catholic Schools – David Condon

COORDINATING PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

PROCLAIM PARENTS

Last year all staff attended a ‘Proclaim’ day which focussed on strengthening our Catholic schools.

Later this year all parents will also have the opportunity to attend a similar gathering called “Proclaim Parents”.

We are fortunate to have some of the best Catholic schools in the country in Port Macquarie. The Bishops of NSW and the ACT described Catholic schools as ‘the jewel in the crown’ of the Church.

Despite this, we know that we live in challenging times and if we are to maintain our high standards we need to continually revisit and recommit to the values and beliefs that have made our schools so valuable and successful.

Proclaim Parents is an opportunity for parents to contribute to building stronger Catholic schools and the best future possible for your children.

Proclaim Parents recognise that:

Our Catholic schools can provide a stronger, more effective schooling experience for our

children – intellectually, emotionally, physically and spiritually.

The Parent – School Partnership is absolutely critical for giving our children the best possible

chance of living rich meaningful lives.

YOUR ideas, thoughts, information and experiences are vital to shape the changes and

improvements within our schools that are relevant to your children.

We need to come together to build a spirit of partnership and unity in Catholic education.

It takes a village to raise a child!

There will be a gathering in Port Macquarie on Tuesday, 14th October. You can register on http://proclaimlismore.com.au/proclaim-parent-gatherings-2014/. I would encourage you to take this opportunity to be part of the conversation and the journey. Mr Jim O’Brien Coordinating Principal

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Drumline Success Congratulations to Mr Mark Spence, Drumline tutor, Mrs Sharon Green, Band Coordinator and the Drumline group members Corben Rees, Tahlia Rakete, Shannon Neville, Bailey Armstrong and Jackson Roche. They travelled to Brisbane last week to compete in the National Percussion Eisteddfod, with the group gaining many places. I refer you to Mrs Sharon Green’s report on their success in this newsletter.

Year 9 2015 Electives Information and Future Studies Evening On Wednesday evening Year 8 students attended an Electives & Future Studies evening which provided valuable information on elective choices for students going into Year 9 next year. The night was well-attended by the majority of Year 8 students and their parents. Thank you to staff for organising this evening.

Year 11 End of Preliminary Course Exams and commencement of the HSC Course

It is a busy time for Year 11 students as they prepare for the upcoming End of Preliminary Exams beginning Week 9 and prepare to commence the HSC in Term 4. To assist students during this time each Year 11 student has had a meeting with a member of staff to discuss their study habits, coping strategies, and study pattern for the HSC. Year 11 students should be doing 2-3 hours of home study each evening if they are to be adequately prepared to perform to the best of their ability in these upcoming exams. I wish them all the best in this busy time and thank all staff who are so dedicated in supporting Year 11 in their preparations.

Year 12 End of Schooling The time is drawing closer for Year 12 to complete 13 years of schooling on September 18th. To celebrate this Year 12, their parents, staff and Year 11 students will be sharing a Mass at St Agnes' Church on Wednesday Evening September 17th. On Thursday September 18th the whole College community will come together for the Year 12 Prize-Giving Ceremony where we will farewell our current Year 12, acknowledge the 2014 House Champions and hand over the leadership of the College from Year 12 students to Year 11 students. All are warmly welcomed to attend this formal occasion.

I would also take this opportunity to remind Year 12 and their parents that substantial work in preparing students for their HSC exams is happening in class for Year 12 students right up until the 17th September. History shows us that the work students put in during the next four weeks at school, working with their teachers and peers is critical to their final exam results. We also know from past HSC groups that students need to being doing long hours of revision and practice questions right up until the exams commence on Monday October 13th.

If you have concerns about your child's current attendance or study pattern please Mr Bruce Smith or Mr Ian Lutton at the College.

Uniform At recent House Assemblies students were spoken to about the unacceptable habit of putting their thumbs through the wrists of their jumpers and reminded of the sacrifice parents make in order to purchase these jumpers. Students were advised they needed to replace those jumpers and could purchase, at a highly discounted price, a second-hand jumper from the College.

What has become apparent during this process is the large number of LOST jumpers that are found lying around the school. Many of these jumpers do not have a student’s name on them and therefore cannot be returned to their rightful owners. We would remind parents and students to please put names on all items of clothing but especially HATS and JUMPERS as these are items which are often taken off and left lying around rather than being put in bags and often get picked up mistakenly by other students.

If you wish to purchase a second-hand jumper please contact Carol Avery at the College.

NEWS FROM OUR LEADER OF CATECHESIS AND EVANGELISATION PRAYER SPONSORS FOR HSC STUDENTS A prayer sponsor is someone who prays for another person with a specific intention in mind and at a specific time. A strong aspect of our Catholic Faith is our belief in the power of prayer. Our Year 12 students are in need of prayers at this time, as they journey through this challenging time of their HSC exams. If you are interested in being a Prayer Sponsor for one of our Year 12 students please phone the school office. We will then pass on to you the name of one of our students and the date and time of their exams. Thank you Vinnies Sleep Out Tonight over 60 students will be sleeping out at the school in support of the many young people who sleep on our streets each night. Stephanie Figgins, our Youth Ministry Trainee, has been fantastic in organising and coordinating this event. Students will be listening to guest speakers, participating in activities to raise awareness of homelessness and participating in games and prayer. A tasty dinner with soup and bread will be served. Thanks to Stephanie and all the students participating.

Prayer for the Homeless

Hear our prayer today for all women and men, boys and girls who are homeless this day. For those sleeping under bridges, on park benches, in doorways or bus stations.

For those who can only find shelter for the night but must wander in the daytime. For families broken because they could not afford to pay the rent. For those who have no relatives or friends who can take them in.

For those who have no place to keep possessions that remind them who they are. For those who are afraid and hopeless.

For those who have been betrayed by our social safety net. For all these people, we pray that you will provide shelter, security and hope.

We pray for those of us with warm houses and comfortable beds

that we not be lulled into complacency and forgetfulness. Jesus, help us to see your face in the eyes of every homeless person we meet

so that we may be empowered through word and deed, and through the political means we have,

to bring justice and peace to those who are homeless. Amen.

SHiNE Our Year 9 and 10 CSYMA students attended an outstanding SHiNE Gathering held at John Paul College in Coffs Harbour last Thursday and Friday. This two day event was attended by over 470 students plus 40-50 staff and 8-9 Priests. It was an amazing opportunity for our students to gather with students from right across the diocese to share and embrace their faith though music, reflection and workshops. SHiNE provides a focus, builds on and feeds so many other school based ministries. Social media Feedback from students:

It was the most incredible experience a young person like myself could encounter.

Mrs Helen Gilbert Assistant Leader of Catechesis and Evangelaisation Proclaim Lismore Parents 2014 'The latest Proclaim e-bulletin features a poignant and moving story of happiness. As parents and caregivers, the greatest wish we have for our children is that they experience lasting happiness and success. Our children spend a significant portion of their lives at school, and so it is vital that as parents we ensure we do our part to create an education experience that contributes to our children’s sense of happiness and achievement. Strong, happy children are produced by strong committed communities, and we can only build these when parents and schools work in partnership with each other. The Proclaim Parent Gatherings will be an exciting opportunity for parents to have their say and be truly listened to about how we can build the most vibrant, faith- filled and welcoming communities for our children and their families. YEAR 10 2015 DEVICE OPTIONS IMPORTANT information for parents of Year 9.

Year 9 were given an information letter regarding the type of device (iPad or laptop) they are expected to bring to school next year. This letter with the options and more detailed information on iPads can be accessed at http://go2school.wix.com/year102015

This website also has a Contacts page if you wish further clarification on any of this information. We feel the information contained on this website is comprehensive so, at this stage, we do not envisage the need for an information evening for all Year 9.

Instead, you may like to take the opportunity at Monday's Parent Teacher night to direct any questions to Mr Barry Watson after you have digested the information contained within the letter or website.

If there is a strong demand for an information evening, we will certainly consider this and inform you in future newsletter(s).

Some Year 7 Science classes have been working on graphing with Mr O’Mullane this term, including weekly homework. Sometimes homework can actually lead backwards - especially when you have to do work at home that you need help with in class!

To solve this problem, I have been lucky enough to call on the talents of some exceptional Year 11 students. These students have given up their lunch every Thursday for the past five weeks to sit and help a Year 7 buddy complete their graph.

I cannot speak more highly of these students, who demonstrate leadership, selflessness and care (not to mention their expert graphing ability) in spending their time mentoring younger students. With Year 7 needing less and less support to complete their work, and with community formed between the senior and junior school, this is great win-win for all involved.

My thanks to the Year 7 students who have spent their lunch break getting ahead, and to our fantastic Year 11 mentors: Tomislav Shindija, Phillip Nickl, Corben Rees, Mimi O’Donovan

And to our hard core band who never miss a week: Olivia Bentley, Kaitlyn Meldrum, Montanah Terry, Priyanka Schuetz, Jack Bowles, Claire Rocuet, Hannah Vogel.

MUSIC NOTES

Last Thursday, all the drummers from the SAPSS Drumline, travelled to Brisbane to compete in the National Percussion Eisteddfod. This Eisteddfod has been running for 15 years and Mark Spence, the drum tutor, decided that our students were now ready to compete.

There were schools from Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane competing – all of them from big private schools. Our students were the only one from a regional area.

Despite the fact, that our Drumline had half the amount of students and half the amount of equipment that the other schools had, the SAPSS group came third.

Three students entered individual items and also did well. Liam Coelho from St Paul’s came first in the Snare Drum championship, with our own Bailey Armstrong coming second. Jackson Roche from Regional also came second on the Intermediate Drumkit section.

All the SAPSS schools are extremely lucky to have such an experienced teacher in Mark Spence. Mark also spends a lot of time writing music for the Drumline and for all his students.

Sign-out Procedure If a student departs the College, they must collect a sign-out sheet from the College office. One requirement of every student is that they return all textbooks and Library books to the Library, and it is the student’s responsibility to check classroom cupboards, not the teachers, or Library staff. Many thanks to all those who complete this requirement promptly.

LIBRARY National Literacy & Numeracy Week 2014 As part of the celebrations for National Literacy & Numeracy Week, we have conducted a guessing competition in the Library. Students were invited to match the face of a reader to their favourite book. The winner is yet to be decided.

Seasons for Growth for Parents:

Supporting your child following separation

and divorce

Parent Invitation

In partnership with Good Grief and the Diocese of Lismore, Parent Assembly are offering Seasons for Growth for Parents: Supporting your child following separation or divorce this term in our schools.

For a long time our Diocesan Schools have offered the highly successful Seasons for Growth® program for children and young people. For many years, parents whose children have participated in the Seasons for Growth® Young People’s Program have been asking, ‘Is there a program that can help parents, too’?

Seasons for Growth for Parents has been developed to meet this need. The program provides an opportunity for you to reflect on the experience of separation and divorce from your child’s perspective, and to explore ideas and strategies that might help you support your child/ren through the changes happening in your family.

Seasons for Growth for Parents: Supporting your child following separation or divorce is a small group program for 5-10 parents. It can be held over 2 x 2 hour sessions or 4 x 1 hour sessions and is for parents only. The date and times are dependent on the availability of the group. Cost: free of charge

Some feedback from our last group –

“Being with others and listening to their experiences caused me to realise I’m not going through such a hard time. Visual aids, colour and modules very helpful”

“Identifying the different emotions and stages that both the parent and child go through and how to cope with each stage and what you can expect. “

“Learning about the progression through the process – the”Season’s” and knowing where I am now and that things will improve. Also learning that the cycle can repeat.”

For more information or to express your interest in being a part of the Seasons for Growth for Parents program this term, please contact Peta Rourke – 0400 420 614 or [email protected]
