Dear Brothers and Sisters: Last Thursday, we celebrated the As-cension of Jesus into Heaven. Next week, we will commemorate the coming of the Holy Spirit with our “Festival of the Nations”, which will begin with a trilingual liturgy at 3PM followed by an explosion of color, mu-sic, food and dance in the “Bingo Hall.” This intervening Sunday serves as a bridge be-tween these two outstanding events. Before Pentecost could take place, the apostles had to choose someone to replace Judas Iscariote. They settle on Matthias to complete the twelve apostles who replace the patriarchs of the Old Covenant and lead the 120 members of the fledgling Church in the New Covenant. We are also told that Mary the Mother of Jesus was with them in the Upper Room. It is the last mention of her in Sacred Scripture. She too had been a bridge between the old and the new. Mary assisted the infant Church (The Mystical Body of Christ) to stand and walk on its own, as she had done for the child Jesus. It is only fitting that this past Friday, May 30th, Bishop Donato Ministered the Sac-rament of Confirmation to the 27 of our parish youth. We are very proud of each of them as they fully embrace our Catholic Faith and like St. Matthias are given the gifts of the Holy Spirit to witness with courage to Christ in our world. They represent the Church today, now grown to 1.2 billion, and encircling the entire world, and calling us to imitate the “Brethren” as we gather in the Upper Room of our parish church in a pre-Pentecost Novena. There we can pray that the Spirit will move and direct us – the Christian brothers and sisters of the 21st Century!

Love and Prayers, Bro. John
