Ministry gathers us and makes us a faith family...

Second Sunday of Advent: We must be good stewards of God’s gifts to us, receiving them gratefully and cultivating them with care, lest we be the ones about whom John the Baptist speaks today, cautioning us, “Every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.” Matthew 3:10

LORD HEAR OUR PRAYER … For those who are ill, and those in need of our prayers …

HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT OF BECOMING A PRIEST? Visit: www.lavocations.org

Dear Parishioners, Today we take up the Retirement Fund for Religious Collection. Thank you so much for your past support for this important collection. Your

contributions are a good way to thank the religious brothers and sisters who have served the Church in various ministries. On this Second Sunday of Advent, the figure of St. John the Baptist is foremost in the reflection of the Church. He is the one who helps us to prepare the way of the Lord. If we listen to the challenge of his voice and change our hearts, we will prepare a worthy reception for the coming of the Lord Jesus. Blessings to you all. Devotedly yours in Christ, Father Gabe

The Family Visitation Ministry offers spiritual support to those in need. Please call Sr. Teresita at 310-216-2001, or the Rectory Office at 310-670-2243.

Reflection on Today’s Readings:

FOCUS: Do the lives we live model how we prepare the way of the Lord or beware of the way of the Lord. Whatever our spiritual state, we can be assured that Jesus came to save all humanity, including us. God’s grace and mercy enable us to cry out in out modern deserts, making straight our paths by loving our neighbor, welcoming the stranger and serving the poor. This good fruit is the evidence of our repentance and spiritual growth (CCC 678).

LITURGY OF THE WORD: The stump of Jesse will blossom and the spirit of the Lord will rest upon the anointed one—the promised Savior will come. We endure, are encouraged and live in harmony when we are in Christ. John preaches about preparing the way of the Lord. His voice bears witness to Christ through his preaching, baptizing and martyrdom (CCC 523).

Faith for Kids:

“John wore clothing made of camel’s hair and…his food was locusts and honey.” Matthew 3:4

John the Baptist was known around Jerusalem as a bit of a strange person. He

ate locusts and dressed in some very different outfits than most other people. We can’t judge people by how they dress or what they eat. Sometimes people who seem very different from us are still very good people. We have to know more about them that just their appearance. John was very different, but people were drawn to him because he told them about the coming of the Messiah—Jesus. Lord Jesus, help me to listen carefully to people who speak your words to me.

Today’s Readings: Isaiah 11:1-10 ♦ Psalm 72:1-2, 7-8, 12-13, 17

Ministry Equips us to deepen our love for God and share our faith…

Santa Safety - Here are some simple guidelines for parents, guardians, and grandparents to employ to make sure that children have a safe and happy visit with Santa’s

helper: When your child is with Santa’s helper, consider en-couraging him or her to stand next to Santa or sit on the floor between his feet rather than sitting on his lap. Let your child know that it’s okay to tell Santa what he or she wants for Christmas but that he or she should also tell mom and dad be-cause they are also Santa’s helpers…Secret surprises are special but no adult should ask a child to keep secrets from the child’s parents. Make sure that the Santa visit is out in the open—or make sure that parents, guardians, and grandparents are in-cluded in the interaction. For copy of the VIRTUS® article “Safety for Children and Santa Helpers,” email [email protected]. For particular help call the Office of Assis-tance Ministry @ 213-637-7650.

Fact of Life: Improved Palliative Care

Assisted suicide has been receiving widespread public attention due to the recent appeal of the Brit-ish Columbia court case seeking to legalize as-sisted suicide to the Supreme Court, and the Que-bec government's Bill 52 proposing "medical aid in dying," which is being studied by the province's Na-tional Assembly. for more on this story visit Life-SiteNews.com Let's look at what we as Catholics profess regarding this subject from the Catechism of the Catholic Church: "Even if death is thought imminent, the ordinary care owed to a sick person cannot be legitimately interrupted. The use of pain-killers to alleviate the sufferings of the dying, even at the risk of shortening their days, can be morally in conformity with human dignity if death is not willed as either an end or a means, but only fore-seen and tolerated as inevitable. Palliative care is a special form of disinterested charity. As such it should be encouraged."

In my weakness is strength - “I will boast all the more gladly of my weakness, so that the power of Christ may dwell in

me. Therefore I am content with weakness, insults, hard-ships, persecutions, and calamities for the sake of Christ; for whenever I am weak, then I am strong.” 2 Cor 12:9-10

Living God’s Word, There is a spirit of real hopefulness about today’s scriptures. Have they inspired hope in you? How can you express confidence in others this week? How can you inspire hope in those whom you can care about most?

make us realize the preciousness of the time you have given us.
