Angel Tree Project The 2019 Angel Tree Project will be underway at
St. Luke during weekend Masses, Dec. 7 - 8, 2019. The “angel” tags will be placed upon our
Christmas tree in the vestibule of the Church for your choosing.
The process will remain the same as in past years ~ select your tag, and proceed to the table near the tree to fill out the
tracking card. Please leave the card with the ladies at the table.
We ask you to bring your wrapped gifts, with the “tag” attached, to the Church the following weekend, Dec. 14—15,
2019.
An Advent Prayer / Una Oración de Adviento In night’s quiet, when we have time and silence to think the songs of this season come drifting into our minds. In the quiet they are welcomed, and our spirits somehow delight in this sweet Advent time.
The dark seems comfortable, and our songs in the mood of the night. “Come, long awaited Savior,” into the darkness of our lives. There is a lot of darkness in our lives...so many places where we live without God. It is not easy to stay with Him. It is not always easy to find Him in our work, in traffic, in our families.
But now, gathered together, we come to His light. We can feel the warmth of His love. We can sing about His coming. Here we can find Jesus the Christ who is willing to walk in our darkness with us, born to become our
light. Amen
En la quietud de la noche, cuando tenemos tiempo y silencio para pensar, las canciones de esta temporada vienen a la deriva en nuestras mentes. En la quietud son bienvenidos, y nuestros espíritus de deleitan de alguna

Pastor’s Corner . . . Isaiah dominates advent. Almost every day, we encounter the depths of his thoughts along with the
complexity of his writings. This is because no prophet before the birth of Christ articulated the expectation of the Messiah than Isaiah. He started off with, “on that day, a shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse”, a
positive outlook and hope for the better and restored future. He initially referred to the moral degradation and collapse of the past but someday, a flower, a branch will flesh out and emerge from the stump of Jesse - a
return to the origins of the Davidic line. The long-expected Messiah, who will bring new life, will come from something that appears dead and ignored. He dreamed the impossible dream. He envisioned the most unlikely. This second Sunday of Advent, we spend a great deal of time in the all-important prophecy of Isaiah in chapter 11: 1-10 describing the charismatic character of the future ideal leader, the nature of his reign and the mytho-logical scene demonstrated in the second section. He will constantly look for the little ones and take care of them. The spirit of the Lord will be with him. He will be filled with the strength that comes God, discern and
decide with equity. The spirit of knowledge and fear of the Lord shall come upon him. His life and ministry will be heavily immersed with divine life. The second part talks about an impossible scenario. "The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid, and the calf and the lion and the fatling together, and a little child shall lead them. The cow and the bear shall feed; their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. The sucking child shall play over the hole of the asp and the weaned child shall put his hand on the adder's den. They shall not hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord (Isa. 11:6-9).” It is a time when two opposing religious groups/organizations work in unity to advance the institution’s interest for as long it’s God-given and the completion of the mission
of the church exemplified by Christ for the glory of God’s name. It’s a time when those who have strained relationships throw a feast and share meals. It’s a time when people of all denominations and faith traditions come and worship the divine. It is a time when heartbreaks are healed and family animosities written off. If the
Prophet's vision fleshes out and comes true, then, the God whom Isaiah consistently prophesied and John talked about like a voice in the wilderness, has arrived in our midst. However, unless conversion of our hearts
takes the centerfold, this long-awaited new era won't dawn upon us.
THE GOSPEL READING
During Advent, Mother church wants us to look at two biblical figures: John the Baptist and the Blessed Virgin Mary. This Sunday, Matthew presents John the Baptizer, an exceedingly popular preacher of his time, dressed in camel's hair, eating locusts and wild honey, poor man's food of last resort, an astonishing combination of word and deed, leading us into the wilderness, an empty place of howling winds, with a hard-hitting message: "Repent, for the Kingdom of God is at hand" (Mt. 3:2). John the Baptist’s strange clothes and harsh sayings are emotionally touchstone, necessary components in getting across the full extent and meaning of the Gospel regardless of how and what we think and feel about it: "...The voice of one crying out in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths..." (Mt. 3:3). What is he talking about? He ponders on the depths of life, the stuff of what should keep us busy as the peak of the season comes close than what the contemporary culture suggests. "But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruit that befits repentance, and do not presume to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the granary, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire (Mt. 3: 7-12).” John's preaching challenges deeply held beliefs and age-old assumptions. His words call us to repentance, compel us to confess our sins, double check and thoroughly examine the inner life regularly. In the daily grind, there are negative forces and energies that surround and influence us. If we don’t take them to the

for Christmas stands in huge tension with society at large. As we approach the holidays, we're asked to bask in things eternal and heavenly and the wonder of the unknown and not get stuck with hanging twinkling
Christmas lights and gazing at the enormity of marked down prices. John’s message sounds scary to say the least but it’s actually a free and open invitation that all of us will be greatly delighted. It’s not something that we have to be afraid of as what we have been waiting for is near and close at hand. This Christmas, Christ wel-
comes us in the crib. He will be our host which is a huge relief on our end.
THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION (A Dogma of Faith) In the constitution Ineffabilis Deus published on December 8, 1854, Pope Pius IX proclaimed: “We de-
clare, pronounce, and define that the doctrine which holds that the Blessed Virgin Mary from the first moment of her conception was preserved… immune from all stain of original sin is revealed by God and is therefore firmly
and constantly, to be believed by all the faithful.” As grandiose as the declaration sounds, the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary actually
comes from popular devotion in the early centuries and not so much the result of theological disputes. We don’t celebrate doctrines and teachings. We celebrate saving events. We celebrate the precious gift of God in Jesus Christ through the Blessed Virgin Mary. We deeply acknowledge her holiness. We don’t just talk about Mary to gain knowledge. The Immaculate Conception is not a piece of information that the church forgot to process in her infancy. This is not an after-thought. It’s a recognition of the gift of God. We are aware of the
longing and expectation associated with advent. We know very well the prophecy that was fulfilled. God went to the simple people not to the theologians, experts, religious elites and the highly-ranking officials. God went to Nazareth, a small forgotten village in Ancient Galilee. God called Mary, a young unassuming virgin- woman to be the bearer of the savior. God highly favored the simple-minded and not those who have complicated
personalities. God invited the innocent and not the intellectuals who make excuses, reason out and talk a lot. God chose the least likely individual to carry in her womb the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy. Since none of us was conceived free from “the sins of the world”, the Immaculate Conception is a silent
protest to denounce the dominance of the prince of evil in which all of us have gone through. The Blessed Mother was conceived without sin and therefore, she was not affected by the structures of sin and the cycle of
oppression, misery and violence we participate even if most of the time we are not aware of it. She was exempted. She was freed by any stain of sin. We belong to a sinful world. Although this year, the solemnity of the Immaculate Conception is not a holy day of obligation, nonetheless, holiness is a sacred duty. Talk about
the Catholic culture, if it’s not a holy day of obligation, only a handful will show up for mass while the rest take it for granted and back to business. But that’s not the intent of the Immaculate Conception. As you know, it
came out as a popular devotion and as a devotion, it had a personal touch with the devotees. God always takes the initiative. God always takes the first step. Even when we come together to actively participate in the litur-gy, the core of Catholic worship and the most powerful means of sanctification at the church’s disposal, we do
so because God, foremost, offered each of us the grace.

R E F L E X I Ó N “Preparen el camino del Señor”
El Adviento es un tiempo para preparar el camino del Sen or, arrepintie ndonos de corazo n por nuestros pecados y renovando nuestras vidas por medio de la oracio n, penitencia y compartiendo nuestros bienes con los mas necesitados. Recordemos las palabras del Papa Alexander: “¿De que nos sirve que Jesu s nazca
en miles de pesebres por todo el mundo, si no nace en nuestros corazones?” E l quiso decir que Jesu s debí a de nacer en nuestros corazones en la Navidad y todos los dí as de nuestras
vidas, irradiando su amor, bondad, misericordia, perdo n, con espí ritu de servicio humilde en nuestras vidas para el mundo entero.
Por esto, es necesario que respondamos a la voz de Dios cuando nos pide cambiar nuestras vidas. San Juan Bautista cuestiona nuestras acciones superficiales exigie ndonos un cambio, que sea fruto de la obediencia fiel a los mandatos de Dios. Tenemos que corregir nuestras relaciones con los dema s, reparando los lazos y la unidad, responsabiliza ndonos de nuestro compromiso en la familia, trabajo y tratando a los dema s con
justicia. Santa Teresa de Lisieux y Santa Teresa de Calcula nos invitan a “Hacer cosas pequen as con mucho amor”.
Para esto necesitamos prepararnos. San Mateo nos muestra a San Juan Bautista como aque l que Isaí as anunciaba 700 an os antes. Es una frase
muy importante. “Preparen el camino del Sen or, hagan rectos sus senderos” (Is. 40, 3). Y ¿co mo debemos hacer rectos nuestros caminos?, El Profeta Isaí as nos insta: “rellenen las quebradas y
barrancos, y rebajen los montes y colinas” (Is. 40, 4-5). Nos dice el Evangelio que con estas palabras predicaba San Juan Bautista, para preparar la aparicio n del
Mesí as. Juan llamaba a un cambio de vida, a la conversio n, al arrepentimiento. “Rebajen los montes y las colinas” significa rebajen las alturas de su orgullo, soberbia, altivez, engreimiento,
autosuficiencia, y vanidad. “Rellenen las quebradas y los barrancos” significa rellenen las bajezas de su egoí smo, envidia, rivalidades,
odios y venganzas. Estos pecados nos dificultan poder vivir en armoní a unos con otros. Son pecados que impiden el
cumplimiento de ese Reino de Paz y Justicia que Cristo nos viene a traer. Por eso San Juan Bautista es contundente en su predicacio n: “Cambien de vida, arrepie ntanse...hagan ver
los frutos de su arrepentimiento”. Esta es la misma exhortacio n que nos hace nuestro Salvador que viene, Es la misma invitacio n que nos hace la Iglesia siempre, pero muy especialmente en este tiempo de Adviento: convie rtanse, cambien de vida,
rebajen las montan as y rellenen las bajezas de sus pecados, defectos, vicios, y malas costumbres. Ese llamado de San Juan Bautista que hizo hace casi dos siglos, sigue siendo vigente. San Juan Bautista hoy, nos dirí a las mismas palabras que dijo entonces. “Ya el hacha esta puesta a la raí z de los a rboles, y todo a rbol que no de fruto sera cortado y arrojado al fuego...El que viene despue s de mí (Jesucristo, el Mesí as) separara el trigo de la paja. Guardara el trigo en su granero y quemara la paja en un fuego que no se
extingue”. El Mesí as vino hace dos mil an os y esperamos su segunda venida. No ha dejado su Gracia, presente en la
Eucaristí a y en los dema s Sacramentos. En este tiempo saque mosle jugo al sacramento de la reconciliacio n. El Adviento nos invita a la conversio n, al cambio de vida, a entregar nuestro corazo n, nuestra vida, nuestra voluntad a Dios. Pero somos libres de hacer lo que nos pide, o ignorarlo. Con nuestra libertad podemos
escoger: ¿Queremos ser “paja” arrojada al fuego o “trigo” a ser guardado en el granero del Sen or? Sen or Jesu s, danos tu gracia para hacer una buena confesio n, arrepintie ndome sinceramente de mis
pecados, enmendando mi vida, cumpliendo la penitencia que me sea impuesta, y comprometie ndome a ser mejor persona e hijo(a) tuyo(a). Que esta navidad mi corazo n sea una digna morada donde vengas a nacer.

Nuestra Fé con Padre Marco. . .1 RITO DE LA RECONCILIACION
El viernes 13 de este mes, tendremos la oportunidad de reconciliarnos con Dios a trave s del sacramento de la Reconciliacio n (Confesio n). Por este motivo los exhorto a aprovechar esta oportunidad donde estaremos va-rios sacerdotes de nuestro vicariato para ofrecerles nuestro servicio. La Iglesia nos pide confesarnos al me-nos dos veces al an o: Adviento y Cuaresma. Es necesario tomar en cuenta algunos elementos importantes ha-
cer una buena confesio n Pasos para una buena confesión
“Todo fiel que haya llegado al uso de razo n, esta obligado a confesar fielmente sus pecados graves al menos una vez al an o”. (c. 989). “Para recibir el saludable remedio del sacramento de la Penitencia, el fiel ha de estar dispuesto a rechazar los pecados cometidos y tener propo sito de la enmienda, para así convertirse a Dios” (c.
987). “La confesio n individual e í ntegra de los pecados con la absolucio n igualmente individual constituye el u nico
modo ordinario, con el que el fiel es reconciliado con Dios y con la Iglesia”. Vale recordar que, segu n el Catecismo de la Iglesia Cato lica, para confesarse bien son necesarios cinco pasos: 1. Examen de conciencia: Es recordar los pecados cometidos desde la u ltima confesio n bien hecha. Para acor-darse de los pecados se aconseja repasar los Mandamientos de la Ley de Dios, los de la Santa Madre de la
Iglesia y los deberes del propio estado. El examen debe ser cuidadoso. 2. Dolor de los pecados: “El acto esencial de la penitencia, por parte del penitente, es la contricio n, o sea, un rechazo claro y decidido del pecado cometido, por el amor que se tiene a Dios y que renace con el arrepenti-miento’. No obstante, para confesarse ‘es suficiente la atricio n, es decir, un arrepentimiento imperfecto, debi-
do ma s al temor que al amor a Dios (Juan Pablo II, Reo. et Paen.). Sin embargo, el dolor de contricio n es ma s perfecto, porque nace del amor de Dios y perdona inmediatamen-te los pecados, si se tiene el propo sito de confesarlos. En cambio el de atricio n, por nacer del temor no basta para perdonar los pecados inmediatamente sino que es necesario confesarlos y recibir la absolucio n. Convie-
ne, pues, que nos arrepintamos por amor a Dios pero tambie n por santo temor. 3. Propo sito de la enmienda: Es una firme resolucio n de no volver a pecar. Tenemos verdadero propo sito de la enmienda cuando estamos dispuestos a poner todos los medios necesarios para evitar el pecado y huir de 4. Decir los pecados al confesor: Debemos confesar todos los pecados mortales y conviene decir tambie n los veniales. Se han de confesar las faltas con humildad y sencillez, manifestando los ciertos como ciertos, los du-dosos como dudosos, y aquellas circunstancias que aumentan o disminuyen su gravedad. El que calla a sa-
biendas algu n pecado mortal comete un grave sacrilegio, y no se lo perdonan los pecados confesados (para el mortal se requieren materia grave, advertencia plena y consentimiento pleno de la voluntad).
5. Cumplir la penitencia: Es rezar las oraciones y hacer las obras buenas que manda el confesor, para satisfa-cer por la pena temporal de los pecados. Y para mayor desagravio y expiracio n, conviene aceptar los sufri-
mientos cotidianos y ganar indulgencias. Recomendaciones prácticas al confesarse
Al arrodillarse en el confesionario, puede decir: “AVE MARIA PURISIMA”. Tambie n se puede an adir esta jacu-latoria: “SENOR, TU CONOCES TODO, TU SABES QUE TE AMO”.
Puede empezar su acusacio n así : ‘Hace tanto tiempo que no me he confesado (una semana, dos meses, un an o…); y me acuso de estos pecados”: Diga sus faltas de manera sencilla, clara y breve. Es preferible que co-mience por la que ma s le cuesta confesar. Si necesita direccio n espiritual debe llamar a la oficina para una
cita. Escuche bien los consejos y la penitencia que le indique el confesor. Y antes de que lo absuelva, manifieste tu
contricio n, diciendo, por ejemplo: “JESUS, HIJO DE DIOS, APIADATE DE MI, QUE SOY PECADOR”. En la absolución del sacerdote, éstas son las palabras esenciales: “YO TE ABSULEVO DE TUS PECADOS, EN EL
NOMBRE DEL PADRE, Y DEL HIJO, Y DEL ESPI RITU SANTO”. Se respondes “AMEN”. Terminada la confesio n, agradece al Sen or su misericordia y cumple, lo antes posible, la penitencia impuesta.
Procura tambie n recordar y poner en pra ctica los consejos recibidos.

Hay dos tipos de pecados Mortal: es una horrible ofensa en contra de Dios que destruye la vida de gracia en el alma. Tres simultaneas condiciones deben estar presentes para que un pecado sea mortal: (1) Que el pecado sea grave, muy serio. (2) Que el pecador sepa que eso que va a hacer ¨es pecado¨. (3) Que a pesar de saber que
eso es pecado, decida hacerlo. Venial: Es hacer un pecado pequen o, una falta leve contra la ley de Dios. Faltar a la Santa Misa del domingo deliberadamente es un pecado mortal.
Exámen de conciencia Pedimos al Espí ritu Santo que nos ilumine y nos recuerde cua les son los pecados. Repasar los 10
Mandamientos. 1. Amara s a Dios sobre todas las cosas ¿Me acuesto o me levanto sin rezar? ¿Me avergu enzo de aparecer 2. creyente ante los dema s? ¿He creí do en supersticiones, por ejemplo; amuletos, sales, brujas, lectura de cartas o de humo de cigarrillos, espiritistas? ¿jugado la guija, consultado adivinos, hipnotismo, yoga, reiki,
brujos, horo scopos, visto pelí culas de terror o mu sica subliminal? 2. No jurara s el nombre de Dios en vano ¿He dicho el Nombre de Dios sin respeto y por cualquier tonterí a? 3. Santificara s las fiestas ¿He faltado a misa los domingos? ¿Cua ntas veces? ¿Cua ntos domingos voy a misa
cada mes? 4. Honrara s a tu padre y a tu madre ¿He desobedecido a mis padres? ¿No les he querido ayudar? ¿Los he
tratado mal? ¿He perdido el tiempo en vez de estudiar o trabajar? 5. No matara s ¿He deseado que a otros les vaya mal? ¿He peleado? ¿He dicho groserí as? ¿Tengo
resentimientos contra alguna persona y no le quiero perdonar? ¿No rezo por los que me han tratado mal? ¿Me he burlado de alguien? ¿He puesto sobrenombres? ¿He tratado con dureza? ¿He dicho palabras
ofensivas? ¿He hablado mal de otras personas? ¿He contado lo malo que han hecho o lo que dicen de ellos? ¿He escandalizado? (o sea, ¿he ensen ado lo malo a los que no lo saben?) ¿Cua ntas veces? ¿Me he aprovechado
de los ma s de biles para golpearlos o humillarlos? 6. No cometera s actos impuros ¿He detenido en mi cerebro por varios minutos pensamientos o deseos
impuros? ¿He mirado pelí culas impuras, o revistas pornogra ficas o escenas impuras por televisio n? ¿He dicho o celebrado chistes malos? ¿He hecho acciones impuras conmigo mismo o con algunas personas? ¿Tengo
alguna amistad que me hace pecar? 7. No robara s ¿He robado? ¿Cua nto vale lo que he robado? ¿Pienso devolverlo o dar eso a los pobres? ¿He devuelto lo prestado? ¿He tenido pereza en cumplir los deberes? 8. No mentira s ¿He dicho mentiras? ¿He
inventado de otros lo que no han hecho o dicho? ¿He hecho trampas en negocios o estudios? ¿He creí do que Dios no me va a ayudar? 9. No consentira s pensamientos ni deseos impuros ¿He codiciado la mujer o el
esposo de mi pro jimo? ¿He mirado a un hombre a una mujer de manera impura? 10. No deseara s los bienes ajenos ¿He deseado los bienes ajenos? ¿He sido envidioso? ¿He sido avaro? ¿He comido ma s de lo que
necesito? ¿He sido orgulloso? Pecados Capitales
1. Soberbia u Orgullo Consiste en una estima de sí mismo, o amor propio indebido, que busca la atencio n y el honor y se pone uno en
antagonismo con Dios (Catecismo Iglesia Cato lica 1866) 2. La Avaricia es la inclinacio n o deseo desordenado de placeres o de posesiones. Es uno de los pecados capitales, esta prohibido por el noveno y de cimo mandamiento. (CIC 2514, 2534) 3. La Lujuria es el deseo desordenado por el placer sexual. Los deseos y actos son desordenados cuando no se conforman al propo sito divino, el cual es propiciar el amor mutuo de entre los esposos y favorecer la procreacio n. Es un pecado con-
tra el Sexto Mandamiento y es una ofensa contra la virtud de la castidad. 4. La Ira es el sentido emocional de desagrado y, generalmente, antagonismo, suscitado por un dan o real o
aparente. La ira puede llegar a ser pasional cuando las emociones se excitan fuertemente. 5. La Gula es el deseo desordenado por el placer conectado con la comida o la bebida. Este deseo puede ser pecaminoso de varias formas: 1- Comer o beber muy en exceso de lo que el cuerpo necesita. 2- Cortejar el
gusto por cierta clase de comida a sabiendas que va en detrimento de la salud. 3- Consentir el apetito por co-midas o bebidas costosas, especialmente cuando una dieta lujosa esta fuera del alcance econo mico 4- Comer
o beber vorazmente da ndole mas atencio n a la comida que a los que nos acompan an.

5- Consumir bebidas alcoho licas hasta el punto de perder control total de la razo n. La intoxicacio n injustifica-da que termina en una completa pe rdida de la razo n es un pecado mortal.
6. La Envidia es el Rencor o tristeza por la buena fortuna de alguien, junto con el deseo desordenado de po-seerla. Es uno de los siete pecados capitales. Se opone al de cimo mandamiento. (CIC 2539)
7. La Pereza es la falta culpable de esfuerzo fí sico o espiritual; acedia, ociosidad. Es uno de los pecados capita-les. (CIC 1866, 2094, 2733)
