THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~~ A NEW DAY DAWNS ~~ Today we hear how Jonah, sent by God to warn the people, storms through the streets of Nineveh, scaring the citizens out of their wits. And it works! God has a change of heart, seeing “by their actions” how the people turn from evil (Jonah 3:10). A new day dawns. Next we hear Paul telling the Corinthians, “The world in its present form is passing away” (1 Corinthians 7:31). He calls for a change of heart. Stopping short of telling them to stop carrying out their everyday activities, he urges them—rather mysteriously—to live “as though” they aren’t doing the things they are doing. A new day has dawned. Finally, Jesus stands on the shore and cries, “The kingdom of God is at hand!” (Mark 1:14). Simon and Andrew abandon their nets—and even their father—and follow him. A new day had dawned. Everyone has to change when a new day dawns: the Ninevites, the Corinthians, the Apostles, even Jesus! Didn’t a new day dawn today for us as well? - Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

15 CATHOLIC NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS! (Cont.)
Learn to love the Blessed Mother. For many of us, Mary (https://www.piercedhands.com/tag/mary/)
wasn’t a big part of our childhood, but she was a huge part of Jesus’ childhood, so she has to be part of our lives. If you
don’t love her as you should (and who does?), try adding some Mary into your life. Maybe it’s time to commit to a daily
rosary, like it or not (https://www.piercedhands.com/dont-like-rosary-6-reasons-pray-anyway/)–but you don’t have to! There are other
ways to love Mary. You could try some good books on Mary [I recommend Hail, Holy Queen (http://www.scotthahn.com/resources-
1/2016/1/14/hail-holy-queen) and The Reed of God (https://www.avemariapress.com/products/The-Reed-of-God)]. You could finally
make your Marian consecration (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DJDZMXK/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1). Or daily
pray a Marian litany. Or meditate on Marian art. Just try to love her more.
Start fasting. Did you know all Catholics are expected to perform some act of penance every Friday and the US Bishops recommend
abstaining from meat? Do that. If you’re already there, try dropping the sugar from your coffee or skipping snacks on non-feast days.
Fasting isn’t just for Lent, it’s a way for us to be conformed to Christ every day.

Family First…from your DRE
Well, here is the long awaited 2021! But things do not seem to be getting better any time soon. However, we must be grateful to God for all our blessings, and even the difficult moments in our lives. Every difficult moment/circumstance has a lesson learned, and we, spiritually grow. Now is the best time to reflect as a family. Here are some helpful questions for your family sharing and reflection: 1. What was an important lesson you learned from your family this past 2020? 2. What did your family accomplish in 2020 that you are most proud of? 3. What do you wish you had done more of as a family this past year? 4. Pick three words to describe this past year with your family. 5. What do you want your family to do differently in 2021? 6. As a family, if you had one wish granted for 2021 what would it be? My dear families, thank you for taking the time as a family to share, love, and pray together!
Happy New Year!

COME TO OUR KICKOFF EVENT, SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 21 at 2pm Outside 14623 Hawthorne Blvd
In Lawndale & South Los Angeles L E N T is less than a month away; Wednesday, February 17th is Ash Wednesday. Life is complicated. Some of us are still in the process of putting our Christmas decorations away! As Christians though, we mustn't let such things get in the way of the practice of our faith. Lent, a season of reflection and preparation before the celebrations of Easter, is at hand. By observing the 40 days of Lent, Christians replicate Jesus Christ’s sacrifice and withdrawal into the desert for 40 days.
We encourage all to read and reflect on the Biblical
passages that will be proclaimed at Masses next week! First Reading — Moses spoke to all the people, saying: “A prophet like me, will
the LORD, your God, raise up for you” (Deuteronomy 18:15-20).
Psalm — If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts (Psalm 95).
Second Reading — Brothers and sisters: I should like you to be free of anxieties (1 Corinthians
7:32-35).
Gospel — The people were astonished at Jesus’ teaching; he taught them as one having
authority (Mark 1:21-28).
Saint Anastasia was born in 281 A.D. and became a perfect symbol of peace, humanity, and solidarity.
Her Feast Day is December 25th. She is a symbol of dialogue and collaboration. In her spirit, and in the spirit of love,
we welcome all to the Catholic Community of St. Anastasia Catholic Church.
Did You Know?
Talk to your children about social media
challenges Children have spent many months at home now, separated
from friends and classmates. Social media is a great tool
to stay in touch, but there are definitely dangerous
aspects to much “screen time” that parents need to be
aware about. Social media challenges range from funny
and harmless to risky and dangerous — and sometimes
even illegal. If your child has social media accounts, talk
to them about making smart choices and about knowing
the difference between harmless pranks and seriously
dangerous stunts. Make a pact to discuss anything they
see their friends or acquaintances doing before they try
it out at home. For more tips on social media safety,

FACTS OF LIFE Woman with spinal cord injury and one ovary
celebrates surprise pregnancy.
Alyssa Higgins didn’t believe pregnancy would be possible for her. During her birth, her spinal cord was injured. As a result, she has never been able to fully move on her own. She also only has one ovary. But after receiving the go-ahead from her doctor, she soon learned she was pregnant and surprised her husband with the news during a photoshoot.
“I didn’t even know if I could get pregnant with a spinal cord injury, but also because I have one ovary,” Higgins explained. “The ovary thing made it get into my head more when I thought I couldn’t get pregnant. But it was always a possible thing.”
According to GMA, after her traumatic birth in which the doctor’s use of forceps caused her injury, Higgins was unable to breathe on her own. Her parents were told that she would never talk or breathe and would be a “vegetable.” At 18 months old, she began to have movement in her fingers, and though she has never had full use of her limbs, she has proven the doctors wrong. Her parents raised her to be strong and optimistic. “My parents treated me like I didn’t even have a disability,” Higgins said. www.liveaction.org

Annual Appeal - End of the Year Donation
Dear St. A’s families
I hope everyone was able to enjoy a relaxing, happy and healthy
Christmas break!
As we close the books on 2020, I would like to send a friendly reminder that it’s not
too late to donate to our Annual Appeal and capitalize on deductions for the year.
Our annual appeal helps support our school’s general operating expenses, and helps
to keep our tuition low. Your help is needed now, more than ever, as we face new
challenges to our budgets as we prepare our campus to safely welcome students
back to campus next month, and dealing with the ongoing Pandemic.
Please consider making an end of the year tax-deductible donation to support
St. Anastasia! Also, please check with your employer in case they offer corporate
matching donations - this is a fantastic way to make your donation even more
impactful!
Details on how to donate are included in this link from September:
https://www.parentsquare.com/feeds/4572604
On behalf of our PTO, we wish everyone a Happy New Year!
With many thanks, Vickie Farmer, PTO President

MINISTRY EQUIPS US TO DEEPEN OUR LOVE FOR GOD AND SHARE OUR FAITH…
Looking around at them with anger and grieved at their hardness of heart, Jesus said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out and his hand
was restored. - Mark 3:5
It may seem strange to read about Jesus getting angry. But notice what Jesus does with that anger? He helps someone. Feeling angry isn’t a sin, but what we do with our anger can be, if we express it in ways that are destructive or hurtful—to ourselves, other people or even things. If you see someone being mistreated, cheated, or bullied, it’s natural to get angry. You might say, “Hey! That’s not right!” At times like this, God uses our strong feelings to urge us to help make things right. When you are angry, follow Jesus’ example and find a way to make things better.
God, when I am angry, help me find ways to be helpful,
not harmful.
St. Anastasia offers Drive-Through Holy Communion, on Sundays at 12:30 pm.

Due to the current COVID restrictions on our
Churches, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, have
decided to reschedule the launch of our in-pew
materials, direct-mail letters, and all Parish
leadership training sessions for the
Together in Mission 2021 "Forward with Faith" Annual Appeal to a later
date in 2021. Our leadership continues to assess the most effective launch date
period, but with the current spikes in the virus cases, especially in Southern
California, a specific date has NOT been finalized. As soon as the Together in
Mission 2021 launch dates have been chosen, we will contact the parish
immediately and begin all Annual Appeal preparations like volunteerism,
speakerships, material fulfillment and direct mail schedules by region. With that
said, if any donor wishes to make a pledge or donation to the 2021 "Forward with
Faith" Annual Appeal, we will be accepting them online at:
