Pastor’s Corner . . . Advent ushers a new liturgical season, a new year for our church, a new way of looking at things, a preview of what lies ahead to see, time and again, from a different perspective huge windows of opportunities in which to anchor our lives. Advent interrupts the ordinary, helps us see life differently, consider it afresh amidst the busy
holiday season. It is best described as a time of preparation for the birth of Christ. It means the arrival of a presence which brings the past to the present through commemoration for the future. Liturgy is subdued.
Songs are mostly chanted. There’s no singing of Gloria until Christmas. With its dark purple motif, it calls us to refresh our weary hearts and souls and start anew, set simple and manageable goals, make priorities straight, dream big again, leave behind the past, awful or not, while remaining ebullient in our efforts to be faithful to Christ. As we look forward to Christmas with every intention to make it memorable to those we hold dear per-haps, many of us may have already been preoccupied with the same good-old thing associated with the holi-days: parties to go, monies to spent, food to eat, perfect presents to buy, gifts to wrap, clothes to wear, stuff to
de cor, among others.
GOSPEL READING
The 24th chapter of the Gospel of Matthew reminds us of the eschatological dimension of Advent that is, the im-pending second coming of Christ at the end-times (Parousia), a major religious question in the early church but nowadays, seldom brought up in the church, much less in the pulpit. Possibly, we stopped looking forward to it as we are mainly concerned with the here and now, at the present time, in our efforts to make both ends meet. However, whether we are aware or not, our weekly procession to the church for Sunday gathering sharing
similar vision is a dress rehearsal for final judgment. In a dramatic fashion, Jesus' words in the Gospel is clearly at odds with people's expectation on the First Sun-day of Advent, "As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. In those days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day that Noah entered the ark. They did not know until the flood came and carried them all away (Mt. 24:37-39).” Just when we keep our lives busy, engaged in the daily grind to prepare for the rainy days, the specter of God's judgment comes along,
crashing us down and sweeping us all away. Further, he mentioned, "Two men will be out in the field; one will be taken, and one will be left. Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken, and one will be left. Therefore, stay awake! For you do not know on which day your Lord will come" (Mt. 24: 40-42). At a time of feasting and merry-making in America, Jesus knows better than anyone else about what really matters in life, spells it out and gives us a heads- up on things to come. What's scary about this scenario is that the day will arrive while people are out in the field harvesting, grinding, driving, running errands, eating and drinking, in short, when people are engaged in normal, everyday activities. Those taken up are the ones who, despite the temptations and signs shown and revealed, remained undistracted, kept their focus intact and manifest their faith in Christ, while the others left behind did just the exact opposite. So, when is when? "Therefore, you also must be ready; for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect (Mt. 24:44).” Sadly, no one knows. The day will come unexpectedly without prior notice. What are we supposed to do then? Let's get on with our jobs since doing so is necessary to survive in a tough
society but we also need to constantly prepare for the unannounced arrival of that day.
SECOND READING
Paul succinctly illustrated in his letter to the Romans 13: 11-14 that it is time to wake up and get dressed, time to put on, adopt and imitate Jesus divine brand and extraordinary lifestyle, time to lead a descent and remarka-bly transformed life, time to get rid of things that dull and intoxicate the senses, time to stop feeding the soul with garbage, time to put aside partying, drunkenness and outrageous behavior, quarreling and jealousy- the very things that scandalize unbelievers and fellows, as well, embarrass the community, hurt feelings and frac-ture relationships. Paul, with a piercing advice and a thrilling exhortation, summons us with a high level of ur-gency, to wake up from a mere sense of obligation to a free and joyful spirit of enthusiasm, cast out the dark side of our souls, avoid any encroachment of the devil, check our moral compass, and behave like a believer.

FIRST READING
As I skimmed through the words of the Prophet Isaiah in the first reading, although this was written centuries ago, he seemed to know very well what’s happening in the American shores and the international community. He was visionary. On Thanksgiving weekend, he takes us up to a mountain and shares what he saw, "In days to come, the mountain of the Lord's house shall be established as the highest mountain and raised above the
hills and all nations shall stream toward it" (Isa. 2:2). He tells us that time will come when people from different corners of the globe will be drawn to God, seek him, press toward him, and converge at a spiritual
zone "that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths" (Isa. 2:3). He envisioned that God will judge the nations, help settle disputes, weapons laid down, threats cease and instead, turn them into
instruments of love. For him, war, hatred and anger are our enemies and not peoples and nations. Isaiah invites us in this side of the world to look beyond, aim for a brighter and peaceful future and live accordingly "O house of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the world (Isa. 2:5).” Together as a community, we will ascend to the Lord’s mountain, to the house of the God of Jacob, to meet our ancestors in faith, to give us instructions in righteous living, and to eagerly hear his message in a place where our shared unprocessed
thoughts will be drawn into a unified whole. Although his vision doesn't even come close, we're asked, for the time being, to walk in God's light, make his presence felt, evident and compelling every step of the way.
OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE CELEBRATION
The feast of our Guadalupe will be celebrated on December 11 starting with procession at 6pm followed by Rosary, and Mass at 7pm. The Man anitas, Obra and Convivio will follow afterwards. This unexpected change in the previous schedule is meant to maintain the momentum to highlight the Mass as the most important
part of the event and to accommodate those who have work and school the next day.
BIBLE STUDY
After the initial meetings, I said, there’s no such thing as simple and basic bible study. Any attempt at breaking open the written word is complex and complicated. One you delve into the sacred writings, you’ll ask
questions such as what is the Bible? the Old Testament? who is the Prophet Isaiah? How come Matthew symbolized as Divine Man preferred to use Son of Man instead of Son of God? These questions are mine, too and perhaps, yours. This Bible Study by way of Lectio Divina is a spiritual exercise to pray fervently, to read with reverence, study wholeheartedly, listen attentively, and find the meaning. At the end of each meeting, each participant is asked to summarize in a sentence God’s message and what God wants you to do with that
message in charity.

R E F L E X I Ó N “Velen pues, porque no saben a que hora llegara el Señor”
Con la liturgia de este domingo, empezamos un nuevo an o litu rgico y un nuevo ciclo en las lecturas que nos ayudan en nuestra preparacio n espiritual para servir con ma s amor a Dios y a nuestros pro jimos. Lo que nos mueve a comprometernos ma s en nuestra vida de fe es el
amor. Es con este amor, que fluye del Padre y del Hijo, que debemos estar es espera de Nuestro Salvador Jesucristo. Esta espera no es pasiva sino activa. La espera que nos pide
Cristo es una espera vigilante y actuante. Las palabras que destacan en el Evangelio de este primer domingo de Adviento son: “Velad, porque no saben que dí a vendra su Sen or…Este n preparados, porque en el momento que
menos piensen, vendra el Hijo del Hombre”. Si nos preguntamos, ¿Por que Dios nos anuncia su segunda venida, pero sin dejarnos saber que dí a y a que hora llegara , como sucede a la hora de nuestra muerte que se asemeja a la venida de Cristo? La respuesta la encontramos en San Efre n que nos dice: “Para que estuvie ramos alerta, sabiendo que cada uno que ello puede suceder en sus dí as”. ¿Estas preparado (a) si hoy sobreviniese aquel dí a grande y
terrible que anuncia el Sen or al fin de los tiempos, aquel dí a en que E l vendra glorioso entre las nubes?
Nuestro Dios nos exhorta a la vigilancia: «Tengan cuidado: que sus corazones no se entor-pezcan por el exceso de comida, por las borracheras y las preocupaciones de la vida». El
discí pulo debe ejercer una continua vigilancia sobre sí mismo, sobre su “corazo n”, sobre sus conductas morales. ¿A que hay que estar atentos? Por “corazo n” en la mentalidad hebrea se entendí a la sede de todos los pensamientos y sentimientos, centro o nu cleo de todo aquello que la persona es, de su ser y de sus facultades. Hay que estar vigilantes de no llevar una vida disipada, libertina, dada al vicio, disoluta e inmoral. Tenemos que estar vigilantes de que las preocupaciones de la vida, de ansiedad, es decir, una preocupacio n excesiva , no nos
alejen de Dios. Dado que el Sen or vendra de improviso, es necesario “despertar” y mantenerse en vela, atentos y preparados en todo momento. El Apo stol Pablo exhorta en ese sentido a los
cristianos de Tesalo nica a que progresen y sobreabunden «en el amor mutuo y en el amor a todos los dema s». De ese modo estara n preparados para presentarse «ante Dios, nuestro Padre, santos e irreprochables», cuando el Sen or venga con todos sus santos. Asimismo, exhorta a los cristianos a que, en vistas a la u ltima Venida del Sen or, vivan como conviene vivir «para agradar a Dios», y que progresen siempre ma s, segu n las ensen anzas del Sen or
ya recibidas. Pidamos a Dios su gracia que nos ayude a estar vigilantes en oracio n y practicando nuestras
virtudes en el servicio de los ma s necesitados, con espí ritu alegre y confiado en su misericordia.

ADVIENTO Viene de la palabra latina "adventus", que significa venida, llegada; es un tiempo de cuatro semanas de preparacio n a la Navidad. Su origen histo rico parece situarse entre los siglos IV y VI, tanto en Oriente como en Occidente. El tiempo de Adviento comienza con las primeras ví speras del domingo que cae el 30 de noviembre o es el ma s pro ximo a este dí a, y acaba antes de las
primeras ví speras de Navidad. Asociada a este tiempo esta la corona de Adviento: un conjunto de cuatro velas con ramas vegetales que una a una se van
encendiendo en cada semana del adviento, y que en Navidad se puede completar con una quinta vela de color blanco junto a una imagen del Nin o Jesu s. La corona se coloca tanto en iglesias como en casas particulares y procede de los paí ses escandinavos y de Alemania. Tiene raí ces simbo licas universales: la luz como salvacio n, el verde como vida, la forma redonda como eternidad, etc. En
el "Bendicional" se ofrece un rito para su bendicio n y encendido cada domingo. Bendicio n de la corona de Adviento en familia
"La 'Corona de Adviento' o 'Corona de las luces de Adviento' es un signo que expresa la alegrí a del tiempo de preparacio n de la Navidad. Por medio de la bendicio n de la corona se subraya su significado religioso.
La luz indica el camino, aleja el miedo y favorece la comunio n. La luz es sí mbolo de Jesucristo, luz del mundo. El encender, semana tras semana, los cuatro cirios de la corona muestran la ascensio n gradual hacia la plenitud de la luz de Navidad. El color verde de la
corona significa la vida y la esperanza.

La tierra, Sen or, se alegra en estos dí as, y tu Iglesia desborda de gozo ante tu Hijo, el Sen or, que se avecina como luz esplendorosa, para iluminar a los que yacemos en las tinieblas de la ignorancia, del dolor y del pecado. Lleno de esperanza en su venida tu pueblo
ha preparado esta corona con ramos del bosque y la ha adornado con luces. Ahora, pues, que vamos a empezar el tiempo de preparacio n para la venida de tu Hijo, te pedimos, Sen or, que, mientras se acrecienta cada dí a el esplendor de esta corona, con
nuevas luces, a nosotros nos ilumines con el esplendor de aquel que, por ser la luz del mundo iluminara todas las oscuridades. E l que vive y reina por los siglos de los siglos. Ame n.
LECTIO DIVINA (LECTURA ORANTE DE LA PALABRA) ¿Qué es la “lectio divina” o lectura orante de la Palabra?
a) Es un método muy antiguo de la Iglesia Católica para orar desde y con la Palabra de Dios. b) No es solamente una la lectura de algún texto bíblico, sino que también es un itinerario hacia el encuentro con el Señor
por medio de la Palabra.
c) Es un encuentro con el Verbo, Jesús de Nazaret. d) Dios nos habla en su Palabra. Nosotros le respondemos en la oración.
e) La lectio divina es el diálogo (alabanza, acción de gracias, petición de perdón y petición) entre Dios y los fieles por medio de la Palabra.
El concilio Vaticano II al recomendarlo afirmó: “El Santo Sínodo recomienda insistentemente a todos los fieles, especialmente a los religiosos, la lectura asidua de la
Escritura para que adquieran -la ciencia suprema de Jesucristo- (Flp 3, 8), -pues desconocer la Escritura es desconocer a Cristo-…. (Los fieles)
recuerden que a la lectura de la Sagrada Escritura debe acompañar la oración para que se realice el diálogo de Dios con el hombre, pues -a Dios hablamos cuando oramos, a Dios escuchamos cuando leemos los oráculos divinos-” (Dei Verbum 25).
El Papa Benedicto XVI nos recomienda La Lectio Divina que quiere decir «lectura de Dios»: "La lectura asidua de la Sagrada Escritura acompañada por la oración permite ese íntimo diálogo en el que, a través de la
lectura, se escucha a Dios que habla, y a través de la oración, se le responde con una confiada apertura del corazón". Este método de lectura ha recibido en los últimos cincuenta años un nuevo impulso en toda la
Iglesia tras la publicación de la constitución dogmática «Dei Verbum» del Concilio Vaticano II (18 de noviembre de 1965).

“No hay que olvidar nunca que la Palabra de Dios es lámpara para nuestros pasos y luz en nuestro camino”
Aunque la lectura orante de la Biblia se remonta a los primeros cristianos, el primero en utilizar la expresión “Lectio
divina” fue el teólogo Orígenes (aproximadamente 185-254), quien manifestó que para leer la Biblia con eficacia es
importante llevarlo a cabo con atención, constancia y oración.
Con el tiempo, la “Lectio divina” llegó a ser parte esencial de la vida religiosa. Las reglas monásticas de Pacomio, Agustín,
Basilio y Benito harían de esa práctica espiritual, junto al trabajo manual y la liturgia, el triple fundamento de la vida
monástica.
Nuestra Fé con Padre Marco. . .2 La sistematización de la “Lectio divina” en cuatro peldaños se desarrolló en el siglo XII. Alrededor del año 1150, el monje cartujo llamado Guido, escribió un librito titulado “La escalera de los monjes”, en donde propuso la teoría de los cuatro
escalones: “la lectura, la meditación, la oración y la contemplación». El afirmó: “Esa es la escalera por la cual los monjes suben desde la tierra hasta el cielo”.
ORAR CON LA PALABRA DE DIOS Más que una reflexión, la lectio divina, es una experiencia de encuentro personal e íntimo con Dios, quien nos ama y viene a
nuestro encuentro. Estos pasos nos van llevando al mismo interior de la Palabra. 1. Invoca… al Espíritu Santo. Pídele que te ilumine y te abra a la comprensión de la Palabra y que te ayude a responder con
tu vida. 2. Lee… lentamente el texto bíblico. Vuelve a leerlo. Lee también algún comentario que te ayude a conocer mejor el sentido
del texto. Dale tiempo al Señor y escucha el mensaje que Él quiere darte en esta Palabra. 3. Medita… qué te dice la Palabra que has leído lentamente. Una vez que hayas comprendido el sentido del texto, entonces
puedes hacerte esta pregunta: ¿Qué me dice este texto bíblico?. 4. Ora… respóndele al Señor que te ha dado su mensaje en la Palabra meditada. Que tu actitud sea la de la Virgen María:
Hágase en mí según tu Palabra. 5. Contempla… quédate maravillado, fascinado, en silencio, en calma. Déjate inundar por el ardor de la Palabra, como quien
recibe el calor del sol. 6. Actúa…. realizando un compromiso que se manifieste de este encuentro con el Señor. Fortalecido e inundado por la
Palabra, regresa a la vida con una actitud diferente. Recuerda. “El Evangelio es el libro de la vida del Señor y está escrito para que se convierta en el libro de nuestra vida… No
sólo hay que leerlo, sino interiorizarlo. Cada Palabra es Espíritu y vida, y está esperando un corazón hambriento para entrar en él” (M Delbrel).
Siendo fiel a la oración con y desde la Palabra de Dios, habrá un cambio en tu vida. La escucha de la Palabra de Dios irá transformando tus criterios, valores, sentimientos, actitudes y conducta, con la sabiduría ella que misma te vaya
inspirando. Ama la Palabra, estúdiala, déjala que moldee tu vida. Cito tres documentos del magisterio de la Iglesia que nos instruyen en la “Lectura Orante de la Palabra de Dios”: a) Encíclica
del Papa Pio XII “Divino Afflante Spiritu” (Inspirado por el Espíritu Santo), b) Constitución Dogmática “Dei Verbum” (Palabra de Dios) Sobre la Divina Revelación promulgada por el Papa Pablo VI, c) Exhortación Apostólica
“Verbum Domini” (Palabra del Señor) del Papa Benedicto XVI. Exhorto a los fieles católicos de las parroquias de San Bernardo, Inmaculada Concepción, y San Lucas a nutrirnos del
Espíritu de Dios, con la Lectura Orante de las lecturas dominicales todos los jueves de 6-7 pm en el salón la Parroquia Inmaculada Concepción. Amen
