GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

• Congratulations to Cinema students Emma Kupershmidt, Austin Marks, Paul Rosette, and Justin Wang. Their short film "The Driver" has been chosen as an Official Selection by the Los Angeles Film Awards. The film will be screened as a part of the 2018 film festival.

• Attention Students: Please drive carefully and be respectful of our neighbors. Please do not block driveways or move trash bins to park. It is important not to litter and clean up after ourselves. Falcon Pride!

• Students please remember the basic rules of street-crossing: stop at the corner and look both ways, be aware of your surroundings. Our intersections are not for diagonal crossing. Be safe.

• Attn: AP Students. The deadline to register for AP Exams is Wednesday, March 7. Students must register and pay online. The link to register is on our school homepage at www.gusd.net/cvhs.

• Come support the Special Olympics Club and eat out at Chipotle and Baked Bear on Sunday, March 11, from

4:00-8:00pm.

• Save the date! The Crescenta Valley High School Instrumental Music Department cordially invites you to their 2018 Spring Concert on Wednesday, March 14, at 7:00pm in MacDonald Auditorium at CVHS, 4400 Ramsdell Avenue, La Crescenta. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students. The concert will feature the Wind Ensemble, String Orchestra, Jazz Band, Symphony Orchestra, and Concert Band performing fun and classical favorites sure to uplift and inspire. We hope you will join us for this popular concert and enjoy a fantastic evening of great music.

• Would you like to be in the most dynamic class on the CV campus? Yearbook is full of opportunity and experience. Writing, photography, design and more are just a few of things you will become expert in. Applications are located on the cvhsfalcons.com website under activities then yearbook. • ~SENIORS COMMUNITY SERVICE REMINDER~ Spring Break is coming! Look through your backpacks, your locker, your cars and your room for any Form C's that have been lost or forgotten. The deadline for Senior Community Service forms is Monday, April 30. Questions, concerns, email Mrs. Gay at [email protected]. This deadline applies to the Class of 2018 only.

• Attention 9th-11th graders: The CV Tech Team is looking for responsible students interested in technology to join next year. Tech team members receive Career Prep credit. Pick up an application in the Counseling Office, if interested. For more information, stop by room 1306 at snack.

• ~Community Service Opportunity~ The Montrose Library is the recipient of a grant and would like teens to come and give their ideas and opinions about what our community needs. Right now the grant is the “community conversation” stage. This is where the grant team is going out to high schools, teen organizations, and individuals to ask: What kind of community do you want to live in? The first volunteer project will be Operation Paperback where teens will help create care packets of donated books that will be sent to military families across the country. Interested? • Tuesday, March 6 is Spanish Club. Come to room 5204 to learn about a Spanish-speaking country and get immersed in the Spanish culture

• Beatboxing Club is now changed to every Thursday, at lunch, in room 5208. Come bring lunch, a friend, and a water bottle. No experience needed.

• Students who would be interested in learning more about tobacco, e-cigarettes and hookah smoking and how

it affects your health, there is a TUPE (Tobacco Use Prevention and Education) program meeting every Tuesday lunch in room 1106. All are welcome, pizza provided.

• Interested in the developing your networking and management skills? The Pasadena Junior Chamber of

Commerce, more commonly known as the “Jaycees,” is proud to continue the Junior Chamber of Commerce Youth Intern Program for its fifth year. All Jaycee Youth Interns will receive a certificate of achievement and a letter of recommendation from the Pasadena Jaycees President at the Awards Luncheon held in their honor. • Attention Ladies: The Pasadena City College (PCC) is holding the 24th annual Adelante Mujer Latina Conference (AML) on Saturday, April 21. AML conference provides young (Latina) girls the tools for personal and professional growth, challenges them to raise their expectations, promotes leadership, and encourages them to pursue a post-high school education so that they may achieve their goals and have a positive impact on their lives and the lives of others. Breakfast, lunch and lots of goodies will be offered for free. For more information, come see Ms. Haghpanah in the counseling office or stop by the office to sign up by Thursday, March 15.

• College Bound Juniors should register for the spring SAT or ACT so you will have scores available when researching "best fit" colleges/universities. Remember the essay portion is required for the University of California campuses and several private schools. When registering, take advantage of the 4 score reports included in the registration fees to avoid having to pay more later on. SAT subject tests are not required by UC or CSU but students should check other out of state or private college requirements, as needed.

Glendale Community College is offering a Makerspace Summer Academy for our female students from June 18-July 12. Students will earn one college unit for Engr 49 (Engineering Independent Study). La Crescenta Elementary School Foundation has renewed their commitment to award scholarships to 2018 CV grads who formerly attended La Crescenta (min. of 3 years). Students must have satisfactory academic achievement with plans to enter a 4-year college in the fall. Applications are available from Mrs. Mulvoy in the Administration office. Deadline is March 30, 2018.

Lincoln Elementary Scholarship – open to graduating high school seniors who previously attended Lincoln Elementary (preference given to students who attended Lincoln K-6). Applications are available from Mrs. Mulvoy in the Administration office or on Lincoln’s website – https://www.gusd.net/lincoln. Deadline to apply is March 30, 2018

Monte Vista Elementary Scholarship - award open to graduating seniors who attended Monte Vista Elementary for at least 3 years. Students must have participated in extra-curricular activities, community service and/or work experience and have satisfactory academic achievement. Mountain Avenue Elementary MACK Scholarship - open to graduating seniors who attended Mountain Avenue for a min. of three years. Students must be enrolling in a 4-year college in the fall and have participated in extra-curricular activities and/or community service. Dunsmore Elmentary School Foundation Scholarship – open to graduating seniors who attended Dunsmore Elementary for a min. of 3 years, have satisfactory academic achievement and plan to enrolled in post-secondary education in the fall. Fremont Elementary School - is offering 3 different scholarships (Bear / STEM or Arts Awards). Students must have attended Fremont for a min. of 3 years and have satisfactory academic achievement. OTHER AWARDS:

La Crescenta Woman’s Club - is offering a $750 scholarship to a graduating senior. Interested students must have a min. 2.0 GPA, be a US citizen, plan to continue their education at a college/university or trade school and demonstrate financial need. Applications are available from Mrs. Mulvoy in the Administration office. Deadline is March 9, 2018

Italian Catholic Federation - offers $400 scholarships to Roman Catholic graduating seniors of Italian descent. Students must have a min. 3.2 GPA, demonstrate leadership roles, be involved in extra-curricular activities and have financial need. Applications are available on line @ www.icf.org or from Mrs. Mulvoy in the Administration office. Deadline to apply is March 15, 2018 Society of Automotive Engineers - offers several scholarship opportunities for students pursuing an engineering or related science (chemistry, physics, biology, computer science) degree through an ABET accredited program. Scholarship awards range from $1000-$5000 each. Students must have a 3.75 unwgt. GPA and rank in the 90th percentile on SAT/ACT test. Application and information on the various awards is available online at http://students.sae.org/scholarships. Deadline to apply is March 15, 2018 Microsoft disability Scholarships - the scholarship enables promising high school students with disabilities to go to college (2yr-4-yr academic or vocational college) and target a career in the technology industry. Students must be graduating senior with a disability (visual, hearing, mobility, cognitive, etc.) declaring a major in engineering, computer science/information systems, business or related field, have a min. 3.0 high school GPA and demonstrate financial need. Application is Beyond the Boroughs NATIONAL Scholarship - this award aims to benefit ALL hardworking, low-income students who are motivated to further their education beyond high school. Scholarship amounts are up to $20,000 over 4 years for use at an accredited 4-year college/university or equivalent (i.e. culinary school). Eligible candidates must be from a low-income household, have a min. 2.5 GPA, and be involved in extra-curricular activity or work. Application is available online at http://www.beyondtheboroughs.org Deadline is March 15, 2018. Assistance League of Glendale - will be offering a $1000 scholarship to a graduating senior (female or male). Criteria based on school leadership, community service, GPA and financial need. In addition, the organization will be awarding one additional $500 scholarship to a student who will be majoring in education at the college level. Applications are available from Mrs. Mulvoy in the Administration office. Deadline to apply is March 16, 2018 The California Credit Union is awarding 10 - $1000 scholarships to LA County college-bound high school seniors. Students must be attending either a 2-yr or 4-yr college in the fall and be active in school and community. Application is available online at ccc.com/scholarship. Deadline to apply is March 16, 2018

Taiwanese American Scholarship Fund offering (10) - $5000 scholarships to help economically-challenged Taiwanese American youth fulfill their dreams of obtaining high education. Applicants must show financial need, have a min. 3.0 GPA, be a US citizen or permanent resident and be a direct blood descendent of a Taiwanese citizen. Royal Business Bank Scholarship Program is offering (20) $1000 scholarships to graduating high school seniors planning to attend a 4-year college as a full-time student in the fall. The scholarships are open to ALL seniors (no ethnicity requirement) with a min. 3.0 GPA and demonstrated financial need. Application and additional information is available at http://apcf.org/2018-royal-business-bank-scholarship-program and deadline to apply is March 28, 2018 Glendale Chapter, CSEA (CA School Employees Association) Scholarships – organization is offering (2) $1000 scholarships awarded to graduating seniors who will continue their education in a Vocational Trade such as police, fire, nursing, tradesman, etc. One of the awards will go to a direct dependent of a CSEA Glendale Chapter 3 member (parent currently works for Glendale Unified School District) in good standing and the second one to a current senior GUSD student. American Postal Works Union (APWU) - is offering (10) $2000 academic and (5) $3000 vocational scholarships to children or grandchildren of a current or retired APWU member. The Hallbeck Academic scholarship is for use at an accredited college or university. The vocational scholarship is to be used for three years of study in a specific trade, technical, industrial or vocational school. Application and information is available at http://www.apwu.org/pay-benefits#Scholarships Deadline is March 31, 2018 Kim & Harold Louie Family Foundation - this scholarship is for high school seniors attending college in 2018-19 academic year. Applicants should have demonstrated outstanding personal achievements, academic merit, leadership qualities and/or community service. In addition, students must have a min. 3.5 (on 4.0 scale) GPA and SAT score of 1200 (out of 1600) or 1800 (out of 2400) or ACT score of 25. Apply online at www.louiefamilyfoundation.org/scholarship-application Deadline is March 31, 2018 American Fire Sprinkler Association (AFSA) - is awarding (10) $2000 scholarships to high school seniors who are US citizens and attending a college/university or certified trade school in the fall. Apply online at www.afsascholarship.org Deadline – April 1, 2018 La Canada La Crescenta-AM Kiwanis Club – offers scholarship awards in 4 different categories – Deadline to apply is April 13, 2018 and you can pick up a copy of the application from Mrs. Mulvoy in the Administration Office. The awards they offer are:

Kiwanis Scholarship - open to ALL seniors who are active in extracurricular activities Key Club Scholarship - open to graduating seniors with a min. 3-year membership in Key Club who also held an officer

position in the club JROTC Scholarship - open to graduating seniors enrolled in their 3rd or 4th year of ROTC who also held an officer position Scouting Scholarship - open to graduating seniors who have earned the rank of EAGLE or GOLD scout

Student Insights is again sponsoring the 2018 Student-View Scholarship Program which offers $11,000 worth of scholarships to high school seniors who plan to attend a 4-yr/2-yr college or career school in the fall. Student Insights is a marking research firm helping colleges and universities communicate more effectively with high school seniors. To compete for the scholarship awards, students log on to www.student-view.com and complete a 15-20 minute application survey about colleges in your area. Deadline is April 22, 2018.

Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) scholarship program is designed to offer local government and planning experience that students can use to develop long-term career goals. Scholarship applicants must have a min. 3.0 GPA, submit a 500-word essay and intend to pursue a college major in urban planning, environmental planning, engineering and/or political science. Apply online at www.scag.ca.gov/scholarship Deadline - April 27, 2018

AMVETS (American Veterans) is the nation’s most inclusive Congressionally-chartered veterans service organization. This organization will be offering two scholarships specific to children/grandchildren of Veterans, Active Duty, Guard/Reserves who are current high school seniors graduating in 2018. The application process and additional information is available online at www.AMVETS.org/scholarship. Deadline to apply is April 30, 2018

Community Scholarship Foundation of La Canada Flintridge, Inc. – offering scholarships to graduating seniors attending any high school within the city of La Canada Flintridge and including Crescenta Valley HS. Applications must have a min. 3.0 GPA, be U.S. citizen. Recipients are selected based on various factors including triumph over an obstacle, hardship or extenuating circumstances, financial need, community service, future promise and academic achievement. Scholarship award can be used at either a 4-yr/2-yr college/university, or trade/technical school. Applications are available from Mrs. Mulvoy in the Administration office or online at www.csflacanada.org Deadline is April 30, 2018.

The Canada Auxiliary of Professionals of Assistance League of Flintridge – is offering $2000 scholarships to graduating seniors from CVHS who will be continuing their higher education at a 2-year college or accredited occupational program. Interested students must have a min. 2.5 GPA and prepare a one-page essay addressing your career goals, achievements, and activities. Applications are available from Mrs. Mulvoy in the Administration Office and deadline to apply is May 4, 2018

CTE – Career & Technical Education Scholarship – sponsored by the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation – is offering awards to graduating seniors planning to attend a non-degree certificate or vocational training program that is 12 months or less at a community college or private career school. Applicants must be a child of either an (1) active duty or reserve U.S. Marine, (2) Veteran U.S. Marine who has received an honorable discharge, (3) an active duty or reserve U.S. Navy Corpsman who is serving, or has served, with a U.S. Marine unit or(4) Veteran U.S. Navy Corpsman who served with a U.S. Marine unit. Applicants must also have a min. 2.0 GPA. Additional information and application are available online at https://www.mcsf.org/cte. Applications are open year round and accepted on a rolling basis.

2018 Aspiring Nurse Scholarship - is a $1000 scholarship sponsored by the Nursing Schools Almanac. Award granted to a graduating senior with a track record of academic excellence, particularly in science and math as well as a passion to pursue a nursing profession. Essay Contests (grades 9-12) The American Foreign Service sponsors the National High School Essay Contest – theme ‘Why Diplomacy & Peacebuilding Matter” The essay contest is open to students in grades 9-12 and awards a $2500 scholarship to the winner. Crescenta Valley High School A Tradition of Quality and Excellence

The staff of Crescenta Valley High School extends a cordial invitation to all families, including students, to attend our annual Open House on Thursday, March 8. There will be entertainment by student groups on the rally platform beginning at 6:00 p.m. Classroom visitations will begin promptly at 6:30 p.m. and end at 8:00 p.m. The purpose of the evening is for parents to briefly visit with teachers and view student work. During Open House, the counselors will be available in the career center to answer any questions, from 6:30-8:00. Over 2,500 CV families are currently receiving the weekly CV email bulletin. The bulletin is an excellent source of information on student activities, special schedules and scholarship opportunities. If you have not yet enrolled for the bulletin, visit the cvhsfalcons.com website and click on the email sign-up link to subscribe. The entire C.V.H.S. staff is looking forward to greeting you at Open House. Your attendance does make a difference! On the back of this flyer is information on the Prom Plus Open House Barbeque Fund Raiser! Please support this effort as its goal is to keep our seniors safe on Prom Night. Friday, March 9 is a minimum day and school will end at 12:30 p.m.

GEF Summer School is offering a wide selection of classes for advancement at Crescenta Valley and Glendale High Schools from June 11 to July 13, 5 days a week. All classes are academic in nature and full credit will be given. Tuition is charged for these classes.
