HHS Family,

Homecoming week was a big success. Although the outcome of

the football game was not what we wanted, the team gave

tremendous effort and played with a lot of heart. The support

from students, parents, and alumni was huge and helped create a

great environment. Congratulations to the Homecoming Court

and to Erin Neighbors, our 2012 Homecoming Queen.

Thank you to Amber Hall and the Student Council for their

dedication and hard work while planning the Homecoming

Dance on Saturday night. The dance was a big success and the

best I can remember. The gym decorations, lighting and sound

system were all exceptional. I also want to thank all of the

volunteers, including many HHS teachers and staff, for helping.

Without their support, a night like this is not possible.

Thank you to all the students who attended the dance. It is

always good to see the students “dressed up”. I want to

commend the students on their behavior! We had no discipline

problems and I think everyone had a good time. I was proud of

the students and I hope this is the first of many great

Letter from the President , Lisa Miller

Thank you, HHS Family for a wonderful start to the 2012-2013 school year!

It is an honor to serve you as HHS PTSA President. I continue to be humbled and amazed by the strength, intelligence and

leadership I witness as our students work each day to prepare themselves to take on the challenges of our community, our

nation and our world. Thank you to the HHS Administration, Faculty and Staff who provide guidance and instruction in both

subject-specific areas and life success skills. Thank you also to parents and adults who are working alongside and with these

efforts. All of us are needed to keep our students and Huntsville High School strong

Your generosity has allowed PTSA to increase the start-up amount given to teachers from $75 to $100. With your help, we

hope to be able to grant specific teacher requests and address unmet needs at HHS. Your PTSA also helps bring relevant

information to students and parents, cares for our campus grounds, publishes the PTSA newsletter and the student directory and

so much more. This year, we look forward to working with Counselors and community experts to bring more helpful

information to parents and students on subjects you have requested.

Here are a few of the latest PTSA activities:

Registration Day was a great success—special thanks to our Administration and Staff and Martha Sharp coordinating with

Melinda Anderson, Annette Birchfield, Kris Valentine and PTSA volunteers.

Open House (thank you Kari Smith, 1st VP, Programs and our clubs and organizations who participated) provided information,

entertainment by Show Choirs, Dance Team and Theater Department. This was followed by a message from our Principal and

parents then followed student‘s full class schedules and met their teachers.

Holly Butler, Talitha Yokley and the Hospitality Committee welcomed the teachers and staff back to school with our annual

faculty breakfast! The Membership Raffle that morning for teachers and staff was very popular. Thank you to those who

gathered and donated items.

Summer Workshops (thank you Beth Moore and Lacey Sharpe) was a huge success again this year offering many helpful

classes and seminars for your students. Look for them again next summer!

Thank you to those who have joined PTSA and for your generous donations. Your PTSA unites all parents, teachers, students,

administration and staff to benefit Huntsville High School. If you have not yet joined, individual memberships are only $8 and

you can find the membership form on the HHS website. From the ‗News & Events‘ section on the left side, choose PTSA; then

choose Forms. The web address is www.huntsvillehigh.org . Membership Co-Chairs, Laura McCown and Shelley Delay are

committed to our goal of 100% PTSA membership – we need at least one member representing each of the 1883 students at

HHS. Right now, there are still 379 HHS students who are not yet represented in our membership total. Please consider a $5 or

$10 donation that can be combined with other donations to ensure that every HHS student is represented.

I want to thank you all for your flexibility as we respond to the changes in Huntsville City Schools that have brought laptops

and online textbooks to our students. We welcome Mr. Mark Mincher back to HHS as our Principal with our full support. We

are fortunate to have an outstanding administration, faculty and staff at HHS and PTSA is proud to support their efforts for our

students and our school. There are many new faces at HHS, so please introduce yourself to our new Administration, Faculty

and Staff when you have a chance.

I wish each of you a wonderful school year. I would love to hear your great ideas for HHS and pass along your desire to

volunteer on one of our PTSA committees. Go Big Red!

Respectfully and thankfully,

Lisa Miller, PTSA President

Inter -Club Council

The Inter Club Council is an organization of representatives from all HHS

clubs and groups. The ICC is an active force in shaping the culture of HHS.

The Inter-Club Council (ICC) helps approved Huntsville High clubs, teams

and organizations gain access to event planning information and influence

future events. Inter-Club Council is a great investment of time in student-

led initiatives each semester. All club sponsors of approved clubs,

organizations and teams listed on the HHS website have been contacted.

If there is an approved HHS club and that has not been contacted please

email [email protected] to add the group's name to the list of

clubs to be represented. Sponsors have been requested to select and send

a representative from the club, organization or team they sponsor. This a

student that is willing to serve on the ICC on an ongoing basis.

Typically, the Inter Club Council holds monthly meetings on the last

Wednesday of the month, during all 3 lunches, in Mrs. Lambert's

classroom. Information and activities are shared between groups. For

example, JROTC is sponsoring Campus Clean UP. Please contact JROTC to

sign your HHS club, sport, group or organization for a week of campus

clean up.

One of the ICC's initiatives this school year is to increase school spirit. The

ICC has assisted Cheer leading in recruiting students to serve as our HHS

Panther mascot. The ICC has promoted school spirit in participating in the

themes for games and pep rallies.

REFLECTIONS

“The Magic of a Moment” Reflections 2012-2013

The National PTA Reflections Program is one of the largest student arts recognition programs in the country. This

year, students are invited to interpret “The Magic of a Moment” theme. The categories are dance choreography, film,

literature, musical composition, photography, special artist, and visual arts. A $500 scholarship will be awarded to one

Alabama senior. The Huntsville High School deadline is Tuesday, October 30.

Forms and information are available in an orange 3-ring binder on the HHS guidance counter or download from the

HHS website under PTSA-Forms

ingID='24949'&OrganizationID='24949 ). An orange crate is also on the counter to receive entries. Contact Beverly

Ellison, 533-3411, [email protected], for questions.

Huntsville High has placed well in recent years. Last year, we had 4 city winners, 1 state winner, and 1 competing at

the national level. The “Diversity is…” winning entries are shown near this article.

“The Great Autumn Tree” by Jacqueline Heard

Our world is like a great autumn tree,

And on it, we are each a single leaf. All are different, but we have the same belief:

we should live altogether in perfect harmony. Leaves are yellow, brown, orange, and gold.

But we were all created by one constant seed, who promised to keep us and care for our

needs. Apart we are fragile, but together

we are

bold. We must unite,

no matter what color, and protect our tree. We must strongly stand together and resist the tempting breeze.

Our previous years’ HHS winners were recognized this summer at the Huntsville Art League. There

was a reception in their honor, and the HAL gallery featured our students the entire month of July.

These winners were also mentioned in the Huntsville Times on several occasions

The PTA® Reflections Program is designed to enhance rather than replace a quality arts education. It

provides opportunities for students to express themselves and to receive positive recognition for their

artistic efforts. It is an annual program for students, preschool through grade 12.

Only a week and a half left to create “The Magic of a Moment” at HHS! The

deadline for entries is Tuesday, October 30th. Entry forms are available in an

orange 3-ring binder on the HHS guidance counter or download your own from

PTSA MEMBERSHIP:

Huntsville High Students need YOU!

HHS has a very proud tradition of achieving

100% membership in our PTSA. We would

like to reach that goal again this year. We

currently have approximately 1504 members.

There are 1883 students on roll which leaves

379. We want EVERY student at HHS to be

represented, unfortunately, not everyone has

the resources available to join.

So we are asking for your help. A $5 or $10

donation, combined with others, will allow

many more HHS students to become

members of our PTSA, that might not

otherwise be able to join.

The membership form is posted on our

website - You can drop it by the school or

mail it in and help us meet our 100%

participation goal! If you have any questions,

please contact:

Shelley DeLay- [email protected]

Laura McCown- [email protected]

Thank you so much for your help in making

sure that ALL our wonderful students are

able to be members of the HHS PTSA!

FYI

Checking Out Electronic Textbooks

Our School Board representative David Blair

passed on that a student is able to load the

textbook onto the laptop, BUT, they will need

the librarian or school tech support person to

load the textbook. The issue stems from the

students needing admin rights to load the

textbook onto the hard drive, which they don’t

have . The student can also check out the

CD/DVD and use it when they know they

won’t have connectivity (e.g. family trip).

presents

The Paper Bag Christmas

November 16 and 17 @ 7:30 pm **Dessert and coffee @ 6:30 pm

November 18 @ 2:00 pm

HHS Theater

The HHS Theater Department is proud to present

The Paper Bag Christmas

again this year. Adapted from the Kevin Milne holiday novel by HHS theater teacher,

Mike Chappell, this is a heartwarming tale of two teenage boys who volunteer at a

children’s cancer unit during the holidays. Mr. Chappell says, “Last year there was such

a wonderful response to the show that we wanted to share it again. Who knows, this

could easily be our annual holiday “gift” to the community”

A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Huntsville Hospital Children’s Cancer

Unit and the drama students will once again serve as “elves” and do the shopping for

the kids in the hospital.

This year there will be a few original songs in the show, thanks to a collaborative

effort with HHS Alumnus Monroe Jones (c/o ’78) and his company SongLever. Mr.

Chappell and Monroe were friends in high school and have maintained that friendship

through the years. Monroe is a record producer in Nashville and CEO of SongLever – a

new company that helps kids write, post and sell original songs. When Mr. C told

Monroe about The Paper Bag Christmas – and his desire to have music help tell the

story- Monroe was “all in!” He has come to HHS every week since September to help

with the song writing process: the students have written the lyrics and Monroe has

recorded the music.

Dessert & Coffee “Meet and Greet”

Kevin Milne will be back this year to sign copies of the novel at the

Sat, November 17th Dessert & Coffee “Meet and Greet” at 6:30

pm, followed by the show at 7:30 pm. There will also be a Friday,

November 16 show at 7:30pm and a Sunday, November 18

HUNTSVILLE HIGH SCHOOL BAND

The HHS Crimson Panther Marching Band began marching season with several weeks of band camp and many after-school

practices preparing for its football season halftime show. Under the direction of Dr. David Spencer and Drum Majors Alex

Vroom, Afton Blizard, and Hudson Morris, this year’s show features Big Band Swing tunes. Included in the show are the

songs “Woodchopper’s Ball,” “It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing),” “Sentimental Journey,” “In the Mood”

(featuring saxophones), “Satin Doll,” “Big Noise from Winnetka,” and “Sing, Sing, Sing.” Featured soloists in this year’s show

are Reed Miller on trombone and Nathaniel Trudeau on trumpet. This year’s Band Captain is Thomas Pigott and Color

Guard Co-Captains are Amanda Nagle and Brandi Seavers.

On Saturday, September 29, 2012, the Huntsville High Band competed in the Mid-South Marching Band Festival in Gadsden,

Alabama. The band, the drum majors, and the color guard received superior ratings. The band will compete again on

Saturday, October 20, 2012 at the Hoover Invitational Marching Festival. More upcoming performances include the annual

Huntsville Veteran’s Day Parade on November 12, the annual Huntsville Christmas Parade on December 1, and the annual

free Holiday Concert on December 13, 2012.

The HHS Band would like to thank everyone who purchased a 2012 Enjoy the City Coupon book. Your support helped the

band raise funds to support all aspects of our music program, to include trip fees, music competition fees, instrument

purchases and maintenance, as well as fee scholarships and support for students with financial hardships. This school year,

the band is traveling to Chicago on April 4-7, 2013 to participate in the Dixie Classic Chicago Music Festival. Students will

visit the Shedd Aquarium and Oceanarium, the Field Museum of Natural History, and the Museum of Science and Industry.

They will also enjoy a performance of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Please continue your generous support of band

fundraisers to help the students raise money to participate in this trip of a lifetime! 13

The next fundraiser for the band is the annual Cookie Dough sale! Orders will be taken soon for this annual sale, featuring

delicious pre-formed cookie dough, cheesecakes, cinnamon rolls, and other food items. See any band member to order.

Engrave your name in the history of Huntsville High! Commemorative bricks for the courtyard are still available. Keep them

in mind for a great Christmas, birthday, or graduation gift! Look for the order form in this newsletter, talk to a band student

about ordering, or download a form from the band website at www.eteamz.com/huntsvillehighband.

Make plans to attend the Holiday Marketplace fundraiser which runs concurrently with the annual free Holiday Concert on

Thursday, December 13, 2012! The Marketplace features crafts and gift items for sale, presented by local businesses and

individuals. Our popular Silent Auction includes gift items, restaurant and store gift certificates, and local crafts. The

fundraising committee is seeking vendors for sales tables at the Holiday Marketplace. If you are a craftsperson or owner of a

business, you can operate a sales table in the lobby of the auditorium during the Marketplace event. Spread the word about

this wonderful sales opportunity to local businesses and craft enthusiasts. The fundraising committee is also seeking items for

the Silent Auction! Please contact Rich Arnold at [email protected] or Cynthia Smith at [email protected] for more

information.

Did you ever hear the saying, “It's not how fast you run but how long you run fast?” Ask any HHS XC

athlete and they will tell you that is a true statement! This year, the HHS Cross Country team has more than 90

runners training daily, as they prepare to run fast for their long distance races. Head Coach Stephen Baker and

Assistant Coach Clarissa Sharp diligently prepare their athletes each week to reach their personal best. The team is

led by team captains Hayden Fry (Sr.), Grant Hinton (Sr.), Emily Cragon (Sr.), and Laurel Sharp (Jr).

Cross Country season started in August, with HHS XC athletes practicing 7th period at either the John Hunt Cross

Country Running Park or Monte Sano Mountain. Varsity boys and girls run a 5K (3.1 miles) and Junior Varsity boys

and girls run 2 miles. This year joining Coach Young as Faculty Representative is Dr. Lea Bryant.

For the first race, the Top 8 Varsity girls and boys competed at the Brooks Memphis Twilight Meet, held in Memphis,

TN. Top Varsity Boys competing in this meet were Christopher Roberts, Mark Chlarson, Alex Brooks, Brett Cleary,

Kevin Ellison, Andrew Wallace, Forest Dewberry, and J.D. Jennings. Top Varsity Girls running were Alyssa Staubach,

Emily Pullen, Laurel Sharp, Cassidy Coghlan, Gillianne Sharp, Emily Cragon, Emerald Summar, and Ruthie Saunders.

HHS XC athletes have since competed at the Chickasaw Trails Invitational in Oakville, the Scottsboro Invitational, the

Randolph School XC Classic at UAH, the Bob Jones Invitational (where HHS XC athletes swept the board, winning all

divisions in the meet, with 3 individual champions), and the Jesse Owens Classic, with several athletes reaching

personal best times.

Under the guidance of Coaches Baker and Sharp, the HHS Cross Country team has demonstrated both talent and

depth. Cross Country athletes have several races remaining this fall and look forward to qualifying for the State XC

Championships held in Oakville, AL in November. Please visit the HHS Cross Country website at www.hhsxc.org.

It has been a great season for Huntsville

High Volleyball and as they head into post

season play, they have compiled a 37-10

record and 7-1 in area 14. Highlights of the

season were winning the Loyola University

Wolfpack Classic in New Orleans for the

second year in a row; competing at the

Guntersville Chick-Fil-A Tournament and

beating McGill-Toolen; and beating Grissom

three times during the season.

The Area 14 Tournament was held on

HHS Panther Golf

The HHS Panthers Golf Team had tryouts over two days this fall and welcomes many new team

members to this year's squad. New players include seniors Joseph Hicks and Drew Connor. Junior

Peyton Cox and Freshman Bennet Bailey and Everett Connor round out the boys team. New girls

team members include Sophomore Celia Farrell, and middle schoolers Olivia Marty, Lexi Andreoni,

Kyndall Skelton and Taylor Hall.

In other news, Senior Blake Messer, who made the Metro Elite First Team last season, won his first

AJGA event this past summer at the Ledges in Huntsville. The prestigious event was a destination

for some of the top golfers in the southeast and Messer won a four-man playoff to take the title.

Messer has committed to play for the Auburn Tigers Golf Team next season.

Former Panthers golfer Janie Jackson is off to a great start in college, helping her Arizona Wildcats

to wins in their first two tournaments of the season at the Rudolph Mason Classic hosted by

Vanderbilt and the Windy City Classic hosted by Northwestern. The freshman finished T7 at the

Windy City Classic to help lead her team to victory. The Wildcats are currently ranked 2nd in the

GolfWeek rankings.

The Panthers will kick off the season in March and are excited about this season's schedule which

includes the Boys Substate hosted by the Panthers at RTJ Hampton Cove on May 7th and the State

Tournament at RTJ Muscle Shoals on May 14-15th.

IG Inspection

The IG Inspection is an event that occurs every 4 years, during which a

unit inspector from Maxwell Air Force Base grades our JROTC unit based on

our overall performance academically, physically, and militarily. The Cadet

staff started planning and preparing for this inspection last summer and worked

diligently to ensure that our unit would exceed the standards set by the

inspector. On September 20th, 2012, Mr. Kepping was given a formal,

military briefing by members of our Cadet staff. This briefing included a

slideshow presentation, narrated video of our Corps activities, and an

opportunity for the inspector to ask questions and provide feedback. After the

briefing, Mr. Kepping was escorted to the gym to observe a 30 count drill

sequence, demonstrated by the 2nd year Cadets. To end his visit, Mr. Kepping

made his final assessments of whether our unit demonstrated our Corps values:

“Integrity first, Service before self, and Excellence in all we do.” In his

closing remarks, he stated that we had exceeded standards in almost every

category he graded, and, on completion of our Corps goals we will be

rewarded with Distinguished Unit, the highest award given in JROTC.

Kitty Hawk is the ROTC Honor Society. This year’s members have been busy tutoring cadets to support

our goal of an 85% overall Corps academic average. The chapter also plans community service projects and has

started preparations for this year’s Relay for Life and the 23 October Special Olympics. Other fall events include a

3 November CASA house winterization project for elderly Huntsville and Madison County residents.

My last visit at Bear Creek was in 2010, my

sophomore year. This journey gave me an

opportunity to make more friends throughout the

year. It also brought my mother and I closer together.

I thought the two-day trip without technology would

be hard to do; I personally did not think I could do it.

However, by keeping my mind occupied throughout

the day, I did not have time to think about

technology. The food was pretty good. It was a

pleasure for me to be able to have this experience,

even though I always end up with a cold on that

Sunday when we come back. This year I’m quite

excited to go, and I cannot wait to be alone with

nature. I am excited for all the activities that are

planned for us, for the food, and for our skits. I am

also excited to have fun, to have an opportunity to

meet new people, and to get closer to some other

individuals that are in ROTC. As a senior this year,

this will be my last opportunity to go to Bear Creek,

and I hope to make the best of it.

AFJROTC’s PT Team is a physical fitness

team that participates in benefit runs and

Physical training competitions. During the

year there are several runs including the

upcoming Krispy Kreme Run and the

Auburn Marine Corps Mud run. The PT

Team meets three to four times a week.

On an average day the team runs, does

simple work outs, and participates in team

building exercises. Every work out is

done to prepare for competitions and to

push each other into better physical

fitness. During the year there are several

PT Competitions. A few of them are

shared with the Drill Team. At these

competitions the team competes with

JROTC units in Northern Alabama

including those from Johnson and

Grissom High Schools. The purpose of the

PT competitions is to see which school’s

JROTC unit is the most physically fit. C/2nd Lt. Brandon Wagner

This year’s Cyber Patriot Team

is ready to go. They recently

participated in a Practice Round for

their first competition on October 1st.

The first round of their national

competition will begin November 2.

They hope to exceed their

achievements from the previous year,

including placing 2nd world-wide in

Round 2 of competition, with the help

of new members. New members

include Roger Cardenas, Dylan

Munroe, Jasmine Price, and John

Widner. They will be working with

experienced members Jackie Farber,

Nathaniel Trudeau, and Nick Hawke,

commanded by Rachel Stough.

Together, all participants will

efficiently secure computer

vulnerabilities against oncoming cyber-

attacks. Already cadets are showing

enthusiastic participation and

determination, making the outlook

positive for the oncoming challenges.

Cadets learn most of the material

without the instruction of adults.

However, the team does receive

assistance from mentors including, but

not limited to, Jeff Baker and John

Stough. That being said, these cadets

“have what it takes.”
