Newsletter for the George Washington PTSA
Citation preview
Dear Parents, Students and Teach-ers: As we begin the final six weeks of the fall semester, this is an excellent time to remind all students and par-ents that students should be spend-ing time each night on homework and or reviewing the work they’ve completed in class each day. Please make sure that students have a place to do their homework. All students should come to school on time after eating a good break-fast! Please help your child be on time for school and remind them, they must be on time to each and every class. Students should NOT be on the cut list! Here are the rea-sons why students are put on the cut list: (1) Not being in class (2) Be-ing tardy to class (3) Being tardy to class from lunch. Make sure you are
on time for school and for all of your classes. Additionally, this is another remind-er for all students, when you are on campus, there should not be any cell phone use or the use of any oth-er electronic equipment. Also a very important reminder regarding stu-dent dress codes, students are not allowed to wear tank tops to school. Skirts and shorts should not be any shorter than a students’ longest fin-ger on their arm when in a relaxed position at their side. I want to personally invite you to attend our many sporting events, plays, and concerts. And become a part of the school by getting in-volved in your children’s education and join the PTSA. We appreciate parent involvement in all of our events. If you haven’t had the
chance to visit the Beacon please stop by and try one of
their many adult classes. The Bea-con is also a great place to have your children go for tutoring after school. Please listen for the auto dialers that I send regarding important an-nouncements and or schedule changes and please visit our newly refurbished website at http://gwhs-sfusd-ca.schoolloop.com/ it’s always changing. Please refer to the website for this year’s schedule on Finals. I would like to thank all of the stu-dents, parents and teachers for their continuing hard work at GWHS. Your hard work makes Washington a great school with many long standing traditions and proud grad-uates! Have a great rest of the semester! Do your best, your very best! Go EAGLES!!! Mrs. Ericka M. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Greetings to Parents,
Teachers, Students and
Administrators,
On behalf of the PTSA
Board here at Washing-
ton High School, I would
like to welcome all new and returning students and their
families.
My name is Alice Badi and I am delighted to
serve as your PTSA President. This is my second and last
year to serve as President. I attended this school many
years ago and my son, Adam, is now a senior.
I have always loved being involved in what’s hap-
pening here at school and in the community. Parent
involvement is really the key to your child’s success. I
encourage all parents to become active in their child’s
education by becoming PTSA members and to attend
the meetings so you can learn about what’s going on at
school and get a chance to meet other parents, teachers
and administrators. We have many exciting and im-
portant programs planned for this year, and we always
welcome your input, concerns and suggestions.
There are so many wonderful resources on our
campus. Your students are taught by the best teachers.
The PTSA works together with the staff to make this the
best environment for learning, THE STUDENTS ARE

Attention 2 Attendance
The District has implemented a new attendance system (Attention 2 Attendance) that places more emphasis on ensuring that our students are present in every class, every
day. Truancy letters are being mailed home on a more regular and frequent basis. The first truancy letter is mailed after the 18th missed and unexcused class period. The second truancy letter is mailed after the 36th missed class period and the third letter after the 60th missed class period. Attention 2 Attendance allows us to monitor attendance much more closely, rather than just focusing on full day absences. Letters are also being sent to students with excessive excused absences. Our goal is to support stu-dent success in school and attending all classes is one of the most important components for academic success. If you have any questions about the new attendance system, please call your child’s counselor or our truancy counse-lor Ms. Jump at 415-750-8400. Thank you, Ms. Susan Saunders Assistant Principal - GWHS
PTA Reflections Art Program This year’s theme is “Diversity Means…”The National PTA Reflections Art Program is an arts recognition and achieve-ment program that provides students with the opportunity to express themselves crea-tively and to receive positive recognition for their original works of art. Since the pro-gram was established in 1969, more than 10 million students have participated. Students may submit an entry in any of six areas: visual arts, literature, musical composition, film production, photography, and dance choreography. For those of you who submitted entries for the Wash Has Talent Show, you may revise those pieces in accordance with the Reflections guidelines and rules. If you participated in past years, please note that beginning in 2011-2012, stu-dents must title their works, and the title must be included on the Student Entry Form. For most arts areas, students must also answer a few questions about how they created their works. The Student Entry Form indicates the required information for each category. For more information about the Re-flections Art Program, please visit http://www.capta.org/sections/programs/reflections.cfm. Entries will be judged at the local level (within GWHS), after which se-lected works will be forwarded to the Dis-trict for additional judging. Each year the 2nd District PTA creates an art exhibit of the Reflections literature, visual arts, and pho-tography entries from all schools. Entry forms and rules for each cate-gory are available in the main office, and submissions are due back to the main office by Friday, November 18, 2011. If you have any questions, please email me at [email protected]. Thank you, and good luck! Sharon Yee

We will once again be holding our annual one mile "Turkey Trot" run to win a Thanksgiving
turkey or chicken. All Physical Education students are welcomed to participate. There will be a re-
ward for the fastest girl and boy. In addition, we are proud to include a modified Turkey trot this

We are using our "state of the art" Fitness Room and newly attained heart monitor's to help our
students get fit and into the "healthy fitness zone" We are proud to announce one
of our own P.E. staff members, Sophia Corbett who has participated in the New

There are many reasons why a student would want to join Eagle Pride, which
is by definition a service club at GWHS. However, many of its members would tell you
that it is more than just a club, that Eagle Pride is a family. Along with the abolishment
of GPA and hours requirements came the freedom for anyone to serve their communi-
ty. Members can sign up for a variety of events after first consulting their own schedule
so there's no need for personal conflict if one is busy a certain day. Furthermore, be-
cause students most likely already use the internet to study and to communicate, Eagle
Pride makes it even easier to volunteer, by conducting most of its business online as
well. This way, there's no need for members to wait and stress to remember to seek
resources, clarification, or the latest updates in-person at school, as it's also possible to
ask a question immediately from the comfort of their own homes or even from a mo-
bile device. Moreover, officers also call members to remind them about turning in
waivers and confirming their registration for any upcoming events that they've signed
up for. At the same time, there is also a brief monthly meeting, rather than the regular
weekly one where members can not only receive vital information, but also simply
come together and bond. On top of all that, it is possible even to volunteer with stu-
dents from other schools who share the same passion to give back to their community
through volunteer work with EP's sister organization, Heart in Motion.
Whenever the school is in need of assistance, we, as Eagle Pride, do all we can
to fulfill the need. Over the summer, members gave their time to help distribute class
schedules, help teachers set up their rooms, provide assistance to administrators with
clerical work, and lend hands to set up the Freshmen Leadership Institute. As of now,
Eagle Pride is the only club that commits itself to aiding the Beacon’s Food Pantry eve-
ry month. We're always finding new and supportive opportunities for its members to
step up and improve their leadership skills. Last summer, Eagle Pride launched its Peer
Mentoring Program to help incoming freshmen transition smoothly into high school.
For the past two years, we've even worked together during Teacher Appreciation Week
in May to assemble treat bags, with cookies, cards, and donations from local groceries
and volunteer events, for every administrator, clerical worker, instructional aide, secu-
rity guard, custodial worker, Wellness Center staff, College Center staff, and Beacon
staff at George Washington as a token of appreciation to commend their inspiring hard
work and tireless dedication.
The impact of Eagle Pride and my life:
Eagle Pride is a great club to be in. I love how friendly and warm the atmos-
phere is. I have met many new friends from joining this club and it has also kept my
life busy and fun. As a member, I learned how to communicate better with my peers so
that we can perform tasks more efficiently and easily. As an officer, I get to participate
in the process of decision making . I learned to take everything into account, decide
what’s best for every member, how to hold meetings, and lead events in Eagle Pride.
These experiences have allowed me to gain leadership skills and confidence when I
speak in front of a crowd. Moreover, it has led me to earn a position with the event
team for Heart in Motion, which is a community service group for youths who are pas-
sionate about helping others. Their goal is to provide volunteer opportunities that are
fun and rewarding. It is their hope that the dedication to serve within the community
keeps growing and becomes a way of life for our members. Eagle Pride and Heart in
Motion have both inspired me to reach for my dreams and improve the community in
any way that I can.
GWHS and the Alumni Association hosted several very successful events October 14th and 15th to commemo-rate Washington High School’s 75th anniversary. The weekend kicked off with the Retired Teachers' Luncheon in the Cafeteria, where 90 former teachers and staff were treated to a catered lunch. Over a dozen volunteer alum-ni servers reinforced the connection to George Washing-ton. The Luncheon was highlighted by California State Superintendent of Schools Tom Torlakson (son of alum-nus, former teacher and Principal Allen Torlakson) who accompanied his stepmother Lee Ann King Torlakson who is also a retired teacher. Former Principal Camille Morishige was also in attendance. Principal Ericka Lovrin gave a moving testimonial to the teachers, and Alumni Association President John Rothmann announced a large bequest left to the GWHSAA by the late English teacher Peter Ritson. Following the Eagles' Bell Game 28-14 victory over Lin-coln featuring the home debut of the GWHS Marching Band, more than 200 alumni from both GW and Lincoln gathered at the Janet Pomeroy Center for the 7th annual Bell Game Party, featuring a fabulous catered buffet spread. Notable attendees included Barry Tompkins S'57, David Miln Smith S'56, and Harry Cordellos S'55, all Hall of Merit inductees. Saturday began with "The Public Art of GWHS Guided Tour" led by GW students in the Academy of Hospitality and Tourism. Over 70 alumni and art lovers attended the tour which discussed the history and little-known facts about the WPA-funded murals in the Library and main
entrance, as well as the bronze statue of George Wash-ington and the football frieze. The Gala Celebration started with a reception on the second floor, followed by the Variety Showcase featuring performances by eight professional alumni: comedians Diane Nichols S'64, Diane Amos '75, and Yayne Abeba '88; singers Noah Griffin S'63, Dorothy Loyd S'48, Jon Fromer S'64, and Margaret Secour '88; and actress Lee Meriwether S'53; directed by cabaret playwright Morris Bobrow S'58. The show also featured performances by the Intermediate and Advanced Choir, the GWHS Dance Company, and was capped off by everyone singing the Hail Washington hymn. We've received overwhelmingly positive feedback from all these events! And we're not done: The 75th anniversary finale will be the Diamond Dreams Gala Dinner & Silent Auction at the St. Francis Hotel on March 10. Tickets are already sell-ing, and we expect to see over 500, so get your seats now! If you can't join us, you can donate to the 75th An-niversary Fund which benefits our funds that allow us to bestow teacher grants, departmental grants and student awards. JROTC - What exactly is it? And what is it doing to help the students? JROTC is defined as Junior Reserves Of-
ficer Training Corps and its purpose is to “Motivate Young People to be Better Citizens”. The program teach students the
value of citizenship, leadership, service to the community, personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment while
instilling in them self esteem, self discipline and team work.
The JROTC cadets ended last year with a bang, they participated in the Spring Encampment from May 27, 2011 to
May 31, 2011 held at Dublin, California where 63 cadets participated. At the five days of camp, these cadets challenged
themselves to participate in the various activities scheduled for them including rappelling from a 40 foot tower, Leadership
Reaction Courses, Land Navigation and Rope Bridge. Cont.

During this last summer, the cadets accomplished two service learning projects held at St. John’s Presbyterian
Church, one on June 6, 2011 including 20 cadets and the second one on July 9, 2011 including 17 cadets. In addition, we
had a volunteer event on July 4, 2011 where 10 cadets participated at the Freedom Road Run.
Since the beginning of the 2011-2012 school year, our cadets have accomplished many more volunteer events. Included
among these are events listed below with the number of participants in parentheses:
September 3, 2011 – Autumn Moon Festival (25)
September 17, 2011 – Ocean Beach Clean-Up (44)
October 8, 2011 - Harvest Food Bank held at St. John’s Presbyterian Church (26)
October 9, 2011 – Italian Heritage Parade (43)
October 16, 2011 – Nike’s Women Marathon (30)
As the students learn skills that will help them later in life, they are also receiving P.E. credit by doing Physical Educa-
tion Independent Study (PEIS). This allows students the chance to do physical activity on their own. When they perform
physical education activities, they document it on the appropriate recording sheet to be evaluated by the instructor for P.E.
credit.
There are many benefits to being in JROTC. First, there are five
credits for the regular class which has six units: Unit 1) Citizenship in Ac-
tion, Unit 2) Leadership Theory and Application, Unit 3) Foundations for
Success, Unit 4) Wellness, Fitness, and First Aid, Unit 5) Geography and
Earth Science, and Unit 6) Citizenship in American History and Govern-
ment. In
addition, five credits may be awarded for Drill Lab while serving as a mem-
ber on one or more of the following teams: Girl's Drill Team, Flag Team,
Drum Corps, Color Guard, or Raiders/Orienteering.
Our cadets are currently working very hard for the upcoming An-
nual SFUSD JROTC Brigade Fall Drill Competition held at Balboa
High School’s Courtyard at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 19, 2011.
The following teams will be competing: Drum Corps, Color Guard, Guidon
and Squad Drill. We encourage everyone to attend, support, and cheer on
our cadets!
Thank you for all your support!

año.
Me llamo Alice Badi y estoy muy compla-
cida de servirles como su presidenta del
PTSA.
Tenemos muchos recursos disponibles
Presidenta Ejecutiva , Avilone Franklin;

¡ARRIBA AGUILAS! GO EA-GLES!

A Note from the Editor
PTSA Every child one voice
Hello to the family of GWHS,
This will be my 5th year as the PTSA Newsletter Editor. As always, I want to thank those of
you who took the time to submit an article. Information is very important to high school
success. I would like to remind everyone about our PTSA Meetings which are held every 2nd
Wednesdays of every month in the school cafeteria. Please do your best to attend some of
these meetings if not all.
As busy as we are, we do what we can to help our children succeed in life and high school is
no different. PLEASE donate to the annual fund and make your check for any amount paya-
ble to: GWHS - PTSA Annual Fund, 600 – 32nd Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94121. This is our
school’s ONLY fundraiser and we are hoping for 100% participation. Any amount will be
greatly appreciated, so please make a donation.
I want to thank our faithful translators Mr. Chi Mak and Ms. Yanira Curry and our format
editor Joseph Wong (student) and Mr. Murphy Thomas for posting the newsletter on the
web.
Have a very Happy Thanksgiving!
Sandy Lee
