Dear Parents, Students and Teachers:
The end of the school year is always very busy and it is very easy to get side tracked from the primary purpose of focusing on education. The most im‐portant goals for our Washington High School students should be to remain fo‐cused on education, getting to class on time and doing the best in class. Good study habits are important for students, especially during testing and finals. State Testing (STAR/CST exam) will take place the week of April 10th to April 12th 2012. (Please refer to the website for the testing schedule.) It is important for students to do their very best on the STAR/CST tests since test scores are used to help place students in their classes for next year and 11th grade test scores are used to determine CSU and other college English and Math placements. In addition, Advanced Place‐ment Testing is from May 7th to May 18th 2012. Throughout all testing and fi‐nals, please encourage your student to do
their very best, stay focused and take care of themselves by eating a good breakfast and getting enough sleep each night.
This year, Washington High School has also focused on the needs of 9th grade students. We have worked in con‐junction with Stanford University on the Challenge Success Team. Challenge Suc‐cess allows us to meet as teachers, parents and students to discuss ways to better serve our 9th grade students. There is a need for a parent representative to attend the next Challenge Success Meeting at Stanford University on Saturday, April 21st 2012. If you are interested, please con‐tact Alice Badi (PTSA President) or me Principal Lovrin via email.
The following is a brief list of some of the events that are taking place within the next several months for Seniors: Prom will be take place on Friday, April 20th at the Design Center (If students have two or more U’s on their last report card or are on the last cut list may not
attend the prom) The Senior End of Year Celebration will be held on Wednesday, May 23rd at the Senior Courtyard; and Graduation will be on Thursday, May 24th at 2 PM in the Washington High School Stadium. Since this is a very busy time for Seniors, it is important for them to continue to stay focused on their grades and do their very best so that they are assured of participat‐ing in graduation and other related activi‐ties.
The last day of school is Friday, May 25th 2012. The first day of school in the fall, will begin on Monday, August 20th 2012. I would like to thank all the stu‐dents, parents and teachers for their con‐tinuing hard work this past year at GWHS. Your hard work makes a huge difference here at Washington high school with its many long standing traditions and proud graduates!

Dear Parents, Students, Teachers and
Administrators, As we end this school
year, I want to THANK YOU for allowing
me to serve as the PTSA President for the
past 2 years. I appreciate all the support I’ve
received from the George Washington High School communi‐
ty.
As I look back on the past 2 years, I realize why it was
so enjoyable and so easy to hold the position as President—I
had the best Executive Board behind me. I couldn’t have
done it without Avilone Franklin, Executive VP; Cindy Fong,
Treasurer; Andrea Wulff, Secretary; Yanira Curry, VP Mem‐
bership; Roz Grant, VP Hospitality; Trina Salvador, Auditor;
Sarah Huck, VP Programs and Fundraising; Nina Mayer and
John Propster, Teacher Liaisons; Nancy Li, Student Volunteer
Coordinator; and Sandy Lee our wonderful Newsletter Editor.
I also want to thank our Principal Ericka Lovrin for all
of her time, input and guidance. She really has each and every
student’s education, success and safety as her
top priority and I am grateful for having had
the opportunity to know her and work with
her not only with the PTSA, but as a member
of the School Site Council and Challenge Suc‐
cess Team.
I hope all the Washington families and teach‐
ers continue to support the PTSA. You are the voice in advo‐
cating for children. The best way to help your children suc‐
ceed is to be involved in their education and with what’s going
on at school and in the community. It is true—“it takes a vil‐
lage to raise a child” and Washington High School is that vil‐
lage. Also, parents remember that being young can be diffi‐
cult. Don’t pressure your kids to talk, but, when they do give
them your full attention.
To the graduating class of 2012, I wish you all success in
achieving your dreams.

GWHS ALUMNI UPDATE Alumni Association Hosts
75th Anniversary Gala Dinner
Offers Membership Discount for Seniors
It's been a very busy school year for the GWHS
Alumni Association! First we hosted the Retired
Teachers' Luncheon and the Gala Variety Show‐
case last October, and last month we held the fina‐
le event for GW's 75th anniversary, the Diamond
Dreams Gala Dinner and Silent Auction at the St.
Francis Hotel where over 200 alumni from 1937 to
2001 joined over half of Washington's faculty and
staff in celebrating our school's past, present and
future! Over $7,000 was raised just at the silent
auction, and these funds will help us support GW
even more.
Speaking of supporting GW, we're now jumping
into Senior Awards. Most will be announced at the
Senior Awards Assembly on May 8, with the Prin‐
cipals' Cups revealed at the May 24 Commence‐
ment. This is also when we ask Seniors to join the
Alumni Association. While everyone who gradu‐
ates is a Washington alumnus, that doesn't auto‐
matically make them an Alumni Association Mem‐
ber. The Class of 2012 may join at the discounted
one‐time fee of $10 through Winter Break 2012, but
now is the time to join because once Commence‐
ment is over they'll have other things on their
plate. No other dues or fees are required, ever!
A Senior once asked me "If I join, what's in it for
me?" Well, students have been the beneficiaries of
classroom and extracurricular materials and sup‐
plies purchased with Alumni Association grants
and, as demonstrated on May 8 and during Com‐
mencement, Alumni Association‐sponsored cash
awards. So, the "what's in it for me" has already
been covered, and we want them to pay it forward
in the future. Besides, joining the AA helps alumni
stay in contact with each other and the school, and
makes it easier for future reunion committees to
get in touch with classmates, because who knows
what the social media landscape may look like in
ten years.
We strongly encourage the Class of 2012 to take
advantage of the discount and save a ten‐spot for
their Alumni Association membership. The regular
membership fee is $30 and subject to increase in
the future. We also may offer membership incen‐
tives, so keep an eye out for our ad in the last issue
of the Eagle newspaper and our hallway signs.
I'll have membership forms at the Senior Awards
Assembly, at one of your graduation rehearsals
and at the Last Dance. Cash is best, we do accept
checks, and credit cards may be accepted only if
there is no sign‐up line (due to the additional time
needed) OR if I have an assistant. See you then!

The GWHS Dance Concert 2012 is here and it’s been an Eagle tra‐
dition for over 43 years! Experience the artistry and talents of the
beginning dancers, intermediate dancers and the GWHS Dance
Company members. Enjoy the creative talents of The Dance Compa‐
ny with directed pieces in the genres of Musical Theater, Hip Hop,
Tango, Mongolian Folk, Lyrical, Jazz, Ballet, and Contemporary
Dance.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION The George Washington High School Physical Education Department is having yet another very busy and produc‐
tive year. All Freshmen and Sophomore students have just taken their Spring Physical Fitness Tests. All eleventh
and twelfth graders that have not passed 5 out of the 6 PFT's are making them up this Spring.
We are very pleased that we sent two of our PE staff to a "Polar Training" workshop, where they were trained to
monitor our student's heart rate during activity and they also learned how to use a PDA for attendance and grades.
We are proud to have sent one of our PE members to the annual CAPHERD Conference this year in Los Angeles;
good information was shared with the rest of the PE staff at our weekly "Common Planning Time".
Once again we are very happy to announce that "one of our own", Ms Sophia Corbett, will be once again participat‐
ing in the Boston Marathon on April 16th. This will be Ms Corbett's 3rd time running in this event. Two weeks af‐
ter the Boston Marathon she will be competing in the "Big Sur Marathon" which is a part of the "Boston Big Sur
Challenge". This will be 2 marathons in 2 Coasts, within 13 days. We are very proud of you Ms Corbett, and we
wish you the best of luck.
The Physical Education Department would like to thank the PTSA for all of the wonderful things they do for our
staff, students and community. We appreciate all you do.

JROTC - What exactly is it? And what is it doing to help the students? Well, JROTC is defined as Junior Reserves Officer Train-ing Corps and its purpose is to “Motivate Young People to be Better Citizens”. The program does this by teaching students the value of citizenship, leadership, service to the community, personal responsi-bility, and a sense of accomplishment while instilling in them self esteem, self discipline and team work.
This year the JROTC Cadets have accomplished a great deal. Having been awarded overall third place at this past year’s Annual Fall Drill Competition last November, and with the publication of an article detailing the benefits of JROTC’s service learning volunteer events, JROTC cadets are hard at work preparing for this year’s up-coming Annual Spring Drill Competition.
Over the course of the past semester, the cadets have accom-plished 8 service learning projects held at St. John’s Presbyterian Church. At these events, cadets have served over 2,000 Richmond District residents and were publicized in the local Richmond Review paper for their efforts. Cadets have also participated in other volunteer events (and parades) such as the ones listed below (number of partici-pants are in parenthesis):

As the students learn skills that will indeed help them later in life,
they are also receiving P.E. credits by taking Physical Education In-dependent Study (PEIS). This allows students the chance to partici-pate in physical activity on their own. When they participate in physi-cal education activities, they document it on the appropriate recording sheet to be evaluated by the instructor for P.E. credits.
There are many benefits to being in JROTC. First, there are five credits for the regular class which has six units: Unit 1- Citizen-ship in Action, Unit 2- Leadership Theory and Application, Unit 3- Foundations for Success, Unit 4 -Wellness, Fitness, and First Aid, Unit 5- Geography and Earth Science, and Unit 6- Citizenship in American History and Government. In addition, five credits may be awarded for Drill Lab while serving as a member on one or more of the following teams: Girl's Drill Team, Flag Team, Drum Corps, Col-or Guard, or Raiders/Orienteering.
Our cadets are currently working very hard for the upcoming Annual SFUSD JROTC Brigade Spring Drill Competition held at Balboa High School’s Courtyard on Saturday May 12, 2012. The fol-lowing teams will be competing: Girls Drill Team, Flag Team, and Drill Platoon. A special performance will also be put on by our very own Drum Corps during the intermission in the program. We encour-age everyone to attend, support, and cheer on our cadets! Not long after that, the Washington JROTC program will be having its annual Awards Ceremony down in the cafeteria of Washington High at 6:00pm on Wednesday May 16, 2012. We would love to see support-ers of the program come out to congratulate the cadets on their hard earned awards and accomplishments. We look forward to bidding farewell to our 12 cadets who are members of the 2012 graduating class. We are also eagerly anticipating this year’s up-coming Summer Encampment at Camp Parks, Dublin with 50 + cadets in tow.

Pig lungs demonstrate effects of smoking Students in various classes will be given a presentation with two pig lungs: one exposed to cigarette smoking of 1 pack per day for 20 years, and the other non-smoking. Students will have a chance to see the difference in inflation of the lungs and touch tumors (with gloves on!). Students who have questions about smoking are welcome to the Wellness Center.

您們好!
學期終常常是非常忙碌也是好容易惟忘專心于教育主要
任務的時候. 華盛頓學生最重要的目標就是記著專心學習、按時
上課和在課堂上盡最大努力. 良好的學習習慣對學生非常重要、
特別是在測驗与學期終考試之際. 加州標准考試 (STAR/CST

DE LA DIRECTORA….
Estimados Padres de Familia, Estudiantes y Maestros,
El fin del año escolar es siempre muy ocupado por lo que es fácil el distraerse de la meta principal, la cual es la edu‐cación. Los objetivos más importantes para nuestros estudian‐tes en Washington H.S. deben ser el de permanecer enfocados en la educación, llegar a sus clases a tiempo, hacer y dar lo me‐jor posible en sus clase. Los buenos hábitos de estudio son im‐portantes sobre todo durante las pruebas y exámenes finales. Los exámenes estandarizados del estado de California (examen de STAR/CST) se llevaran a cabo la semana del 10 al 12 de Abril del 2012 (favor de referirse a nuestro sitio en la Internet para verificar el horario de clases durante la semana de exáme‐nes) Es importante que los estudiantes hagan lo mejor posible en las pruebas de STAR/CST ya que los resultados de estos nos ayudan a colocar a los estudiantes en las clases que tomaran el próximo año escolar. Para los estudiantes en el 11vo grado estos resultados determinan la admisión y asignación en las clases de Matemáticas e Ingles en las universidades del sistema de CSU y otras. Además, los exámenes de colocación avanzada (AP) se llevaran a cabo del 7 al 18 de Mayo de 2012. Durante el perio‐do de exámenes y finales, por favor anime a su estudiante a que haga lo mejor posible, se mantenga enfocado, tome cuidado de comer un buen desayuno y tenga una buena noche de descanso antes de tomar el examen.
Este año, la escuela Washington se ha enfocado en las necesidades de nuestros estudiantes en el 9no grado. Hemos estado trabajando en colaboración con el equipo de desafió al éxito de la Universidad de Stanford (Challenge Sucess Team). Este equipo nos permite trabajar con los maestros, padres y es‐tudiantes y discutir la mejor forma de servirles a nuestros estu‐diantes. Tomo esta oportunidad para comunicarles que necesi‐tamos un padre de familia que nos represente en la próxima
reunión ante el Stanford Challenge Sucess Team (equipo de desafió al éxito de la Universidad de Stanford ) el día Sábado 21 de Abril de 2012. Si usted esta interesado por favor contacte a Alice Badi (Presidenta del PTSA) o a mi persona, la Sra. Lovrin, Directora de la escuela vía correo electrónico.
A continuación les doy una lista breve, de los aconteci‐mientos que ocurrirán en los próximos meses: La fiesta de gra‐duación para los estudiantes en el 12avo. grado se llevara a cabo el día 20 de Abril en el “Desing Center” (si su estudiante tiene mas de dos U’s en su ultimo reporte de tarjeta de calificaciones o se encuentra en la lista de los que cortan clases no podrán atender la fiesta de promoción). La celebración de fin de año para los estudiantes que están por graduarse, se llevara a cabo el Miércoles, 23 de Mayo en el corredor de los Seniors y la cere‐monia de graduación sera el dia Jueves, 24 de Mayo a las 2pm en el Estadio de la escuela Washington. Ya que este es un tiempo muy ocupado para nuestros “Seniors”, es muy impor‐tante que se enfoquen en sus calificaciones y se comporten bien ya que de esa manera estarán seguros de participar en la cere‐monia de graduación y las demás actividades.
El ultimo dia de escuela es el Viernes, 25 de Mayo de 2012. El primer día de escuela para año 2012‐2013 es Lunes, 20 de Agos‐to de 2012.
Quisiera agradecer a todos los estudiantes, padres y maestros por su arduo trabajo en este año escolar aquí en GWHS. ¡Su arduo trabajo aquí en Washington hace que esta sea una gran escuela con una tradición de altos estándares y graduados que se sienten muy orgullosos de haber sido parte de esta institución.
Les deseo tengan un resto del año escolar extraordinario.

Estimado Padres de Familia, Estudiantes, Maestros y Personal
Administrativo,
Mientras estamos al cierre de este año escolar, quiero darles las GRA‐
CIAS por permitirme servirles como Presidenta del PTSA por los 2 últi‐
mos años. Aprecio todo el apoyo que he recibido de la comunidad de
George Washington High School.
Mientras medito en los dos últimos años, realizo el porque mi posición
como Presidenta del PTSA ha sido muy agradable y fácil ‐ He tenido al
mejor equipo de oficiales respaldándome. Yo no hubiese podido
hacerla sin la ayuda de Avilone Franklin, Vice Presidenta Ejecutiva;
Cindy Fong, Tesorera; Andrea Wulff, Secretaria; Yanira Curry, VP de
Membresias; Roz Grant, VP de Hospitalidad; Trina Salvador, Auditora;
Sarah Huck, VP Programas/Recaudacion de Fondos; Nina Mayer and
John Propster, Maestros de Enlace; Nancy Li, Coordinadora de Estu‐
diantes Voluntarios; y Sandy Lee nuestra maravillosa editora de corres‐
pondencia.
Quiero también agradecerle a nuestra Directora, Ericka Lovrin por todo
su tiempo, sugerencias y guía. Ella tiene como prioridad la educación
de cada estudiante, el éxito y la seguridad por lo que estoy muy agrade‐
cida de haber tenido la oportunidad de conocerla y trabajar con ella no
únicamente en el PTSA, pero también como miembro del concilio estu‐
diantil de la escuela y del Equipo de Desafió al Éxito (Challenge Success
Team.)
Espero que todas las familias de Washington y los maestros continúen
apoyando el PTSA. Ustedes son la voz y los que avocan por nuestros
niños. La mejor forma de ayudar a sus hijos a obtener el éxito es el in‐
volucrarse en la educación de ellos, ya que con eso ustedes estarán me‐
jor enterados de los pasa en la escuela y en la comunidad. Es muy cierto
—“toma una villa el criar un hijo” y la escuela Washington High School
es esa villa. Padres, recuerden que el ser joven muchas veces puede ser
muy difícil. No presione a sus hijos, sino que hable con ellos siempre y
cuando estos les den toda la atención.
A los estudiantes que se están graduando de la clase 2012, les de‐
seo todo el éxito en alcanzar sus sueños.

Greetings to all,
I can’t believe how fast the school year has come and gone. This will be the last PTSA Newsletter for 2011‐2012. I
want to take this opportunity to THANK some INCREDIABLE and SPECIAL people who have worked and contin‐
ue to work endlessly for George Washington High School.
I want to sincerely THANK our PTSA President Alice Badi, our Secretary Andrea Wulff and our Treasurer Cindy
Fong for doing such an AWESOME job for many years! They are a true inspiration to all. They care about our
school, our children, our teachers and the entire Washington Community. They are very dedicated, very involved
not only with their own children’s education, but with all the students here at Washington. We all benefit a great
deal due to their efforts and hard work. Alice Badi, Cindy Fong and Andrea Wulff, like all of us have very busy lives
and yet they took the time to step up and became a very important part of the PTSA, without them filling the three
most important positions, we will NOT have a PTSA at Washington. This will be their last year with PTSA, they are
graduating with their children and Andrea Wulff is termed out. They will truly be missed.
I also want to THANK the WONDERFUL CANDIDATES who were willing to run for these positions and at the
PTSA Meeting held on Wednesday, April 11th we voted and I am happy to announce our NEW PTSA OFFICERS for
2012 – 2013. Congratulations to Mercy Blount ‐ PTSA President, Esther Morales ‐ Secretary and Joanne Tay‐
lor ‐ Treasurer. Thank you for taking the time out of your busy lives and commit to filling these 3 very important
positions!
And THANK YOU Principal Lovrin for all that you did, do and continue to do for the entire Washington Commu‐
nity.
