Tablet Computer Shopping Tips Tablets are the must-have portable computing device of the moment, making them a top holiday gift. In just a few short years, the number of people with tablets has increased dramatically.Within a year of the iPad’s introduction into the technological lexicon, 11 percent of Americans already owned one. As other tablets and upgraded versions of the iPad entered the market, tab-lets became more and more popular.A study from the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism in collaboration with The Economist Group found that the majority of tablet owners (77 percent) use their tab-lets every day, using them for an average of about 90 minutes. When shopping for a tablet, there are many different features to consider.

Size - Tablets come in different sizes, weights and screen offerings. When the iPad was released, it set the standard screen size at around 10 inches, weighing slightly more than a pound. Tablets made by other manufacturers range in sizes from 12-inch screens to 5-inch screens, giving shoppers the ability to choose a device that is as mobile as they need it to be.Battery Life - Many tablet users are interested in the portability of the device. Battery operation makes that portability possible, so it makes sense that battery life is a big draw for consumers. Many tablet reviews citeAndroid products and the iPad as the best for battery life.Flexibility - Flexibility is also important to prospective tablet buyers. Tablets that are only able to connect to the Internet via a Wi-Fi service will be much more limited in use. Many tablets

now come with 3G or Wi-Fi capabilities, enabling the de-vice to work even when you are away from home or a Wi-Fi connection.Storage - Some consumers are interested in the amount of data they can store on their tablets. Some reviewers have complained about the inability to add more storage space to the Apple iPad, forc-ing consumers to purchase a more expensive device just to add more storage. Android and Windows-based tablets have removable storage op-tions and may be better buys for those who need to save a large number of apps or pho-tos and video.

Price - As with any purchase, price is often a big component of decision-making. There-fore, the tablet that offers the most features at the most af-fordable price may win out.

Holiday Season College is a time when many students form friendships and make memories that last a lifetime. College is also a time when students learn to stretch a dollar, and the right gift come the holiday season can have a big impact on a college student’s life. The following are a few gift ideas that may help make your fa-vorite student’s second se-mester a success.

* Books and supplies: Textbooks and supplies remain one of the biggest expenses for today’s col-lege students. According to the College Board, a not-for-profit organization aimed at helping col-lege students be successful, the average cost for books and supplies during the 2011-2012 school year was roughly $1,200. Such an expense can be daunting for college students, and relatives can help them out come the holidays by paying for a portion or all of their second semester textbooks and supplies. Such a gesture might not make the most sentimental holiday gift, but it’s a practical present that will go a long way toward helping a financially struggling student pay his or her bills.* Travel: College students who want to study abroad or travel for spring break must bankroll those travels themselves. In addition, some students struggle to pay for their travel back home during the holiday season or during other breaks from class. Adults who want to lend a college student a helping hand this holiday season can offer to help pay those travel costs. Men and women who travel a lot for work might be able to use their airline miles to secure a free or low-cost ticket for the college student in their life.* Computer accessories and programs: Of course, not all gifts need to be financially oriented. Practical gifts like computer accessories can also make a great gift for college students. Nowa-days, many colleges and universities require incoming students to have their own desktop or laptop computers. Students with their own laptops might appreciate new laptop bags that make it easier to transport their computers to and from classes and the library. In addition, some majors, such as graphic design, require that students use ever-evolving and expensive computer software. These programs are often in-stalled on computers in the university’s labs, but students may perform better in school if they install such programs on their own computers. Up-grading students’ computer software can save them mon-ey and help them do better in school.* Gaming consoles: Another great gift for college students is the latest video gaming console. Though such a gift might not be as virtuous as new textbooks or computer programs, a gaming console can help students unwind from the stresses of school-work. Today’s college stu-dents grew up with gaming consoles and many are avid gamers, so a new gaming console can also be a great way for them to make new friends who share similar interests.

Did You Know? Many area shopping malls of-fer some method of transpor-tation between tourist sites or transportation hubs. For shoppers looking to avoid the hassles of finding a parking space at malls and shopping centers, shuttle buses may be the answer. For example, the Mall of America in Min-neapolis offers free shuttle service between the stores and around 50 hotels in the vicinity. To investigate the possibilities of transportation to a mall near you, visit the mall’s information kiosk dur-ing your next visit and inquire as to whether a shuttle van or bus is available. Also, you may contact local bus compa-nies to find out whether there is a free or paid shuttle avail-able. Typically, these will be stationed at park-and-rides or in large parking lots. The bus will pick up and deliver you to the same location. Seniors may be entitled to comple-mentary busing to the mall courtesy of municipal senior busing systems or accessible ride programs.

Proper Etiquette For Gift-Giving

The rules of etiquette have loosened a bit from centuries past. No longer are people held accountable for the slightest misstep, and some-times the rule-breakers are revered. However, when it comes to holiday gifting, err-ing on the side of caution and following proper etiquette can make exchanging gifts go more smoothly.

Being considerate when gift-ing helps make the holidays enjoyable and as stress-free as possible. Some may find it unfortunate that so much pressure is placed on giving gifts this time of year. When exchanging, heed these suggestions.

* Gift-giving is about the recipient and not you as the giver. The idea is to create that warm and fuzzy feeling for the person on the receiving end of the gift. Think about the person’s interests and find a gift that pertains to these interests. It may not be the easiest to find a rare book or those collectible golf clubs, but putting forth the effort will mean more to the person getting the gift.

* Don’t up the ante. When exchanging gifts with a person, do not try to anticipate what he or she will spend and then go above that price. This may come off as petty and make the other person feel uncomfortable. Instead, choose a price that you can readily afford and find the nicest thing within that range. If a person with whom you hadn’t anticipated exchanging gifts gives you some-thing, simply offer thanks and don’t feel uncomfortable that you do not have something to offer in return.

* Gift receipts are very thoughtful. Including a gift receipt with your gift tells the recipient that you tried to find something that he or she will enjoy, but that you’re comfortable with them returning the gift if it’s not just right. Again, this conveys your feelings for the recipient. Do not, however, use gift receipts as a “get out of jail free” pass. That means, don’t simply grab anything off the rack, attach a gift receipt and attempt to pass it off as a meaningful gift.

* Do not e-mail thank you notes. If you are not able to thank a person in person for a gift, it is in better taste to send a hand-written note than to fire off a quick e-mail. While writing letters has become a lost art, a hand-written thank you note stands out and shows how much you appreciate the gift.

* It’s unnecessary to give your boss a gift. Gifting your boss may come across like you are trying to win favor. It also may create a competition within the office. Stick to gifting col-leagues, but leave the boss out of the holiday pool.

* Gift cards do not break etiquette rules. Although gift cards may seem like the easy way out of gifting, they’ve become more acceptable and popular. If you want to personalize a gift card, try using a photo or special memory that correlates to the gift card. Otherwise, package the gift card with a few inexpen-sive items to create a gift basket.

* When in doubt, stick with non-intimate gifts. Perfume, co-logne, intimate apparel and similar items say that you know a person on a deeper level and are extremely personal. For friends and acquaintances, stick with safer gifts that do not give off intimate undertones.

* Don’t regift. Whenever possible, graciously accept gifts and do not try to pass them off as your own to other people. If caught, you will be more embarrassed than if you had not given a gift at all.

Following a few guidelines on gift-giving etiquette can help to make the holidays even happier.

Tree Lighting Tips

Lighting a Christmas tree may seem like child’s play, but time and again people struggle with the task. Un-tangling wires and wrapping them around boughs can be nerve wracking, but light-ing a tree doesn’t have to be a chore when you follow some tips from the profes-sionals. First, keep in mind that wrapping lights around the tree horizontally is more work and often doesn’t pro-duce a multi-dimensional ef-fect. Rather, string the lights from the trunk up to the top, working vertically. This is ac-tually how the tree decorators at Rockefeller Center in New York City do the famous tree year after year. This method helps eliminate tangled wires and empty spots. Remember to plug in the strands of lights before you begin to check for burnt-out bulbs and to adjust the spacing of lights to prevent dark spots. Think about varying light bulb sizes to add more dimension. String an inner layer of small LED white lights to produce an inner glow on the tree before adding larger, colored lights on top to increase visual appeal. Just be sure to match the same wattage of the lights so that you do not have power surges and can prolong the life of the bulbs.

Foxy

Zoey

Meet Fonzie. Isn't he adorable? He likes every-one! Dogs and cats as well. Just like the original

Fonz, he seems to prefer the ladies. He very gently stands on his hind legs to give hugs and is a real love bug!. He's a 40 lb Hound/Rottie mix, black and tan with short hair. He's about 3-4 yrs old, very mellow. He does have a deformed front leg that the vet believes was a birth defect. It doesn't seem to bother him. He can get into and out of a car without help, but he would probably not be able to live easily in a home with more

than a few stairs to navigate. Fill out an adoption application at www.hopeanimalrescue.org

Tiny does not live up to his name! He is about 3 years old, very sweet, and is good

with dogs and other cats.

Look at those markings! Zoey is a real sweetie-pie and would love to find her

forever home. Is that with you?

Foxy is a unique-looking, spayed adult. She's a Basenji/Pit mix. It was recently discovered that she is a natural at agility! She is very smart & needs someone who will engage her. If you are interested in agility, you will have a great head

start with Foxy. We don't know if she's done it before, but on a recent outing she tackled

the seesaw effortlessly, went on to the jumps and ran the tunnel like a pro! When we have observed her with other dogs, she has gotten

on well with them. She's been waiting sooo long for her forever home!

As Christianity spread, St. Nicholas’ image began to change. Russia’s Dedt Mo-roz, or Father Ice and the Norse god Odin and even the old Roman deity Saturn had white beards and the power to fly through the air or magically appear. As the centuries ground along, these attributes were melded with the myths surrounding the good St. Nicholas. Communication back then wasn’t what it is today so there were many different versions of St. Nicholas. In many of these a punisher known variously as Knecht Rupert, Ru Claus, Pelznickel, Aschenklaus and Black Pete accompanied the good saint. This sinister sidekick was on the lookout for children that misbehaved. Legend has it that Black Pete would abduct bad children or (more often) leave a birch switch behind as a hint of their fate if the bad behavior continued. Most often, St. Nicholas intervened, saving even naughty children from Black Pete, teaching them that they could earn another chance if they would mend their ways. Eventually the evil accomplice was dropped leaving it up to St. Nicholas to be the sole judge of whether a child was “naughty or nice” and the birch switch was replaced with a lump of coal.

So, just prior to his journey across the Atlantic to the New World, St. Nicholas had become a red robed, white bearded figure who flew on a white horse to deliver gifts to good children overnight during the Christmas Holy Days. In the early days of New York, the Dutch name “Sante Klaus” was adopted by more recent English colonists as “Santa Claus”. The name stuck and immigrants of many backgrounds adopted him and carried his name west as America was explored.

Washington Irving is credited with widening Santa Claus’ popularity and putting him in a cart that flew through the air. The writings of Irving were certainly known by Henry Livingston who penned the famous poem “An Account of a Visit from Saint Nicholas” that he recited to his children one Christmas. Later, in 1822, the poem was published for the first time in the Troy Sentinel. A professor of divinity, Dr Clement Moore, claimed authorship and a controversy rages to this day over who actually wrote the poem. Regardless, the poem became quite popular and did wonders for the reputation of Santa Claus. It gave us a sleigh pulled by reindeer that all had names and reinforced the idea that Santa entered through the chimney. The bishop’s robes were gone; replaced by a furry suit. Santa was now jolly and corpulent but small.

This thoroughly American rendition of St Nicholas was hugely popular and the poem was (and is still) repeated every Christmas Eve in nearly every American home.

During the dark days of the Civil War, Harper’s Weekly published numerous sto-ries about Santa Claus illustrated by a German immigrant, Thomas Nast. The characteristics Santa Claus were no longer left up to the imagination. Nast’s illustrations unified and solidi-fied popular ideas of what Santa looked like and how he acted. He was a “Jolly Old Elf”.

Today we think of Santa Claus as a much larger personage. This came about through an advertising campaign conducted during the early days of popular color publica-tions. The Coca-Cola Company sponsored an ad campaign during Prohibition that featured Santa as a larger version of the elf. Billboards and magazine images of this new Santa blazed their way into the popular consciousness and have remained ever since. Santa’s favorite reindeer Rudolph was introduced through another popular ad campaign staged by Montgomery Ward in 1939.

Through all the changes St. Nick has undergone, he remains in our hearts as our companion at Christmas. Whether Saint or Santa, we can count on him to remind us that Christmas is a time for giving and for children. Every effort must be made to make a magi-cal visit possible for every child.... especially the less fortunate. Above all else, this is the legacy of Saint Nicholas. Please, give him a hand.

Albany, NY (October 15, 2012) –Do you have a love for animals and want to support a great local cause? Join with the Goldstein Auto Group and bring your empty bottles and cans to a Goldstein dealership and support the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society. The Mohawk Hudson Humane Society’s “Empties For Animals” campaign helps support the mission of the organization, including sheltering, adoption, education, advocacy and the prevention of cruelty to animals. This year’s goal is to raise $125,000, in honor of the Society’s 125th Anniversary. To reach the goal, the Goldstein Auto Group will need to collect more than 1,500,000 cans and bottles. The 2012 "Empties For Animals” campaign has raised over $73,000 thru Sept. 2012, an increase of $17,638 or 33% over the same period last year. The 2011 campaign raised a total of more than $74,000 and col-lected 925,000 cans and bottles. Volunteers sorted all those bottles and cans, based on the originating distributor, which in turn gener-ated $.08 per can or bottle instead of the regular $.05 redemption

fee paid at stores. Monies from the program were used to benefit the more than 6,500 animals cared for by the Society in 2011. “We are very pleased to continue our partnership with the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society and support the 2012 “Empties For Animals” campaign. We would like to thank all of our customers and the members of the community who have generously donated to such a worthy cause,” said Alan Goldstein, President of Goldstein Auto Group.

News Release:HUDSON RIVER COMMUNITY

CREDIT UNION JOINS MARINES CORPS TOYS FOR TOTS DRIVE

GLENS FALLS, NY (December 3, 2012): Hudson River Community Cred-it Union (HRCCU) is once again participating in the Marine Corps annual Toys for Tots Drive. The charity event, hosted in conjunction with the U.S. Marine Corps, will collect toy donations for local children. Credit Union members and local residents are encouraged to bring new, unwrapped toys to any HRCCU location through December 10. The Toys for Tots Foundation is the fund-raising, funding and support or-ganization for the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program. Each year, the foundation relies on the donations from corporate partners such as HRCCU to help collect and deliver gifts to children. Children from our local area will benefit from the toys collected at HRCCU branches. The partnership with the Marine Corps Toys for Tots program expands the Credit Union’s commitment to helping children in local communities served by Hudson River Community Credit Union. Hudson River Commu-nity Credit Union’s mission is to improve the well-being of members and their families by providing quality financial services with the best overall value. Hudson River Community Credit Union has five branches located in Corinth, Glens Falls, Hudson Falls, Troy and Cohoes. HRCCU is a com-munity chartered, not-for-profit financial cooperative owned and governed by its members. Anyone who lives, works, worships, attends school or busi-nesses and other legal entities located in Warren, Washington, Saratoga and Rensselaer Counties or the Towns of Cohoes, Watervliet and Green Island and their family members are eligible to join the credit union. For more in-formation, call 518-654-9028 or 1-800-824-0700 or visit hrccu.org.
