“The life style of the Naval Academy appeals to me because of the lifelong relationships that are built there, the bonds that are created through all the challenges, and the fact that the students are all there with the goal of serving our country.”

For anyone that knows Annalise Heyward, those words should come as no surprise. She is a focused and determined young lady that plans to follow in the footsteps laid by many of her relatives. Annalise’s great grandfather, grandfather, father, uncle and brother all attend-ed the United States Naval Academy. With lacrosse and academic success, the opportunity to join her family members as a Midshipmen has presented itself to Annalise.

The daughter of Sandy and Doreen Heyward is a center midfielder for the Ardrey Kell Knights Lacrosse Team. She first began to play lacrosse in the fifth grade as both of her brothers were playing and it looked like fun. Annalise was coming off of an injury from sev-eral years of gymnastics competition and felt she needed a change. Fortunately the decision has been a wonderful one.

Annalise has found great success playing lacrosse. In addition to being able to commit to the Naval Academy in November of her sophomore year, Annalise was named the team MVP after her ninth grade season and also has been a member of the North Carolina State Team in the past. Annalise also plays lacrosse for the Midwestern Force Lacrosse Club which is made up of players from Ohio, Michigan, Georgia, North Carolina, and Oregon. Navy Lacrosse certainly runs in the family as older brother Alex played on the Navy Men’s Lacrosse team for 4 years and her grandfather Shannon Heyward was a 3 time All American on the Navy Men’s Lacrosse team.

Varsity swimmer and rising junior at Charlotte Catholic High School, Katy Miller, has been named the Queen City Audio, Video and Appliances Community Heroes Award Winner. The 16 year old daughter of Sally and Rich Miller is very active in helping various organizations and programs throughout our community. Katy participates in the Swim for Life Program, which teaches young, under-privileged children the basics of swimming. She also serves for the Children’s Liturgy of the Word at St. Matthews Catholic Church. In addition, she assembles goody-bags for the homeless people of our community through the church.

Katy has spent countless hours helping children in the Swim for Life Program become more comfortable around the water. She loves sharing her love of the sport with young kids and getting them excited to be in the pool. “As the program goes on, I love to see the progress of the kids who are, at first, afraid to get into the water, and later see them diving off the blocks.” Katy began swimming year round in the first grade and still pursues the sport on a club and school level.

Inside the classroom, Katy is a straight A student with a 4.3 GPA. She received the Cougar Award at the end of this year, which recognizes students who have received A’s all school year. She was also awarded High Honors for her outstanding academics. Her favorite subjects are math and science; Katy hopes to become either an engineer or pharmacist.

Queen City Audio, Video and Appliances salutes Katy Miller for her continued commitment serving others in need in our community.

Callen Nuccio, son of Mary Jo and Eric Nuccio, is a rising junior at Cuthbert-son High School. Callen excels both on and off the field, understanding that academics come before sports. Voted as team MVP his freshman year of high school, the 5’6” second baseman has continued to shine for his team and is looking to put together another spec-tacular year next spring. Let’s dig a little deeper in Callen’s life and go Beyond the Game.

How long have you been playing baseball? Has it always been a big part of your life?“I have been playing baseball since I was 6 years old. I started on a co-ed league with my sister. She played shortstop and I played second some of the time. My first sport I played was baseball, but I also played basketball and football through middle school. As long as I can remember my family and I have spent a lot of weekends at baseball fields.”

To date, what is your biggest athletic accomplishment?“I would say that my biggest accomplishment to date in baseball was being selected by my teammates as a freshman as the MVP. To me it’s a great honor to be selected by your teammates.”

How well have you performed in the classroom?“I perform well in the classroom by receiving A’s and B’s in honors classes. Coach Little always addresses us to put academics before baseball.”

What obstacles have you had to overcome?“One obstacle I have had to overcome was coming into high school trying to start as a freshmen. The pace and tempo was substantially different than mid-

dle school baseball. As a freshmen you realize that your hands and feet are a lot slower than the older kids. Coach Little has taught me so much more about the game of baseball. I have become a lot faster with my hands and feet because of him.”

Could you please describe a typical week of training? “A typical training week for me consist of sprinting and hitting. I weight lift 4 days a week.”

Your first year on Varsity you led your team in hitting with a .447 average. Was it nice coming in and making a big impact at such a young age? “Coming in as a freshman to play

varsity baseball was hard. A person who helped make it a lot easier was Bai-ley Connell. The summer before starting 9th grade he helped me out a lot by asking me to workout with him all the time. Bailey was my mentor as a fresh-man. He helped me get better and introduced me to the other players on the team. Batting average is just a number. As I entered high school I was taught to do my job and to move the runners in scoring position. I’m just glad I hit .447 to help contribute to the team.”

What are your plans for the future? Have you given college any thought yet? “In the short-term, I hope to improve my baseball skills by playing on the South Charlotte Panthers. They are a showcase team that primarily plays in the surrounding area. It will provide me the opportunity to play at colleges and hopefully gain more visibility. After high school, I plan on attending college and hopefully earning a spot on the baseball team. Right now I have interest in studying physical therapy or supply chain management.”

Do you want to be the best?! You must train with the best!

Summer Training Program

Conor Elliott is one of the more impres-sive young men to come out of the 2015 graduating class. A superstar both on and off the field, the talented baseball player will be taking his talents to Swarthmore College this fall. Swarthmore is a small school in Pennsylvania that Forbes ranks as the third best private school in the nation. Conor’s parents have instilled a winning mentality in their son, as Conor does everything to the best of his ability. Currently rehabbing a broken hand, we asked Conor some questions and went Beyond the Game with the former Ardrey Kell baseball star.

How long have you been playing baseball and what is it about the sport that you love so much?“I started playing baseball when I was 7 years old. I love how baseball is a game where you are born to play it. It’s not a sport where simply being an athlete allows you to be successful; baseball is a game with a very specific skill set, and that’s why it forces you to continue working to perfect your craft.”

You excel in both academics and athletics. How have you managed to balance both baseball and schoolwork throughout your high school career?“I make academics a priority because I realize how important they are, and how they are the thing that is going to allow me to be successful in life. Right when I would get home from baseball practice, I would do my homework or study. I knew if I put the work in, there would be time for friends and relaxing and all that other stuff later.”

How did you respond to breaking your hand?“At first I was really down and upset because I was having such a great year, but I real-ized this just meant my role had changed for the team. I was still team captain so I made sure to make sure my team was always game ready and always challenging themselves so we could succeed as a program.”

What are some of your top athletic ac-complishments?“Leading the state in RBIs, making all-con-ference, team MVP, 2012-2015 conference champions, two-time defending conference tournament champions”

Why Swarthmore College? What about Swarthmore stood out to you?“Swarthmore College is one of the highest ranking academic institutions in the nation, and the future benefits this college offered me were too good to turn down. I was very lucky to get the opportunity I’ve been presented with, and I intend to take advantage of it. “

What will you miss most about Ardrey Kell?“I’m going to miss all my friends I’ve become so close to over the years as well as AK base-ball. I’ve had baseball practice with the same people and coaches for the past 4 years and it’s hard to say good bye. However, some of my closest friends are going up north to play sports as well so I’ll still be around some famil-iar faces.”

Addison puts in a lot of hard work whether it’s in the classroom or on the field. Let’s go Beyond The Game to learn more about this outstanding student-athlete.

When did you start playing football and why?“I really started playing flag football in 2nd grade get-ting ready for tackle football because that is something I really wanted to do. My family has been really big into football, especially watching Virginia Tech as a kid.”

What do you like about playing football?“Growing up I like the players and determination that football has to offer and you really get to see how your teammates’ determination and passion for the game increases and see them come ready to work every day”

Describe a typical day of practice during the summer?“Practices start promptly at 9am. From there we go to the weight room for two hours then go outside and start with the basics for the new players and brush off the rust of the returning players. Come August, we re-ally start to prepare for our upcoming games.”

What are some of your academic accomplishments?“Right now I have a 4.0 GPA which is really good for the school I go to. My SAT score is a 2010. I was also just admitted into the Honor Society for Latin at my school.”

Are you involved in any clubs or community service activities?“I do some tutoring with children that are home-schooled in my neighborhood. I also plan to run a flag football camp this summer.”

Do you plan on playing football in college?“I do. As of right now, I’m trying to but it’s very open. I’m just testing the waters and waiting to see where it takes me.”

What colleges are you looking at and are there any looking at you?I’m generally looking at academically prestigious schools in the area such as Davidson and Washing-ton and Lee.”

What are some of your top athletic accom-plishments?“Definitely last year when I received all-conference and all-state. That’s definitely my highest because I put in so much work over the summer and that was a big goal that I set for myself now having reached it is really awesome.”

What is something that sets you apart from everyone else?“My hard work. I try to attack everything with the

same fierceness and effort whether it’s in the classroom or in the weight room because I know that this is my opportunity and I want to do great things.”
