Coach Walsh has led the Cava-liers to become one of the top middle school cross country teams in the country. His passion and dedication to each runner has been the catalyst in the growth and success of the program. Coach Walsh has gone far above the call of duty for a middle school coach and the families on the team are very appreciative of his efforts.

Congratulations to Coach Kirk Walsh for being named the Q Shack Coach of the Month.

Ardrey Kell High School golfer Nicole Kramer began playing golf in the fall of 2012. With hard work, she has played her way up the ladder and is now contending for wins on the high school circuit. The daughter of John and Betty Kramer hopes to play competitive golf for many years to come. Let’s go Beyond The Game with Nicole Kramer to learn more.

When did you begin playing golf and why?“I began playing golf in the fall of 2012, my seventh grade year. That summer I had been to the driving range a few times with my dad who is a golfer. This is originally what sparked my interest in the sport, and I began taking lessons that fall. In the spring, my sister, dad, and I went to the Wells Fargo Champi-onship at Quail Hollow Golf Club. There I watched Ricky Fowler and Rory McIlroy compete. After seeing them up close and in awe of the game at that level, I decided I wanted to play com-petitive golf and make this sport a big part of my life.”

What are your top three athletic accomplishments?“My top three athletic accomplishments would include qualifying for Region-als as a freshman on the Ardrey Kell Women’s Golf Team. Another accom-plishment I am proud of is improving my average score by 4.5 shots between this season and last. I set a goal during the offseason and through hard work and focus I accomplished it by moving my average score to 40.0. The athletic accomplishment I am most proud of is playing in the 2014 4A State Tourna-ment at Pinehurst for my high school. We placed third, and it was an honor to play there with my teammates.”

What is the strongest part of your game?“The strongest part of my game is my approach to playing the course. Golf is a hard game that requires consistency to make a good score. While I won’t al-ways drive it down the middle or hit the green with an eight iron to 2 feet, if I play smart over the course of a round I will make a better score. Approaching each competitive round with a plan is the most important part of my game. Coach Whitney is always making sure we develop and stick to our plan dur-

ing competition. His emphasis on this technique has taught me the importance of remaining focused and playing smart.”

What makes you the happiest on the course?“From the beginning, just being on the golf course has always been very special to me, but what makes me happiest on the course is spending time with the people I love. Playing with my team always makes me happy, and I look forward to spending time with them at practice and in matches. Additionally, play-ing golf with my dad has been a huge part of learning to play and enjoying the game. My parents being with me when I golf and finding a family in my team makes me the happiest on the golf course.”

Most memorable shot ever?“My most memorable shot would most definitely be this year at the NCHSAA state championship. The tournament was on

Pinehurst #6, which is a gorgeous course. The shot was the second day on the third hole. Having started on number ten this was my twelfth hole. The day had been full of ups and downs and I was striving for a good finish. My tee shot on the par three went in a greenside bunker. From the bunker, I was focusing on knocking it close. I Watched as my ball popped out of the trap and rolled across the green into the hole. My team and family were watching and the most exciting part was their reaction to the shot. I was elated that I holed my first bunker shot at states. The shot kept me excited and inspired for the rest of the round.”

What is your best score and where did it happen at?“My best score is a 78 at this year’s Metro Junior Championship at Cedarwood Country Club in Charlotte, NC.”

How well do you perform in the classroom? “School work is something that has always been very important to me. I work hard in the classroom and maintain a 4.75 weighted GPA. At school I participate in both French Club and Interact Club.”

BEYOND THE GAME WITH KAYLEA TOLCHIN

Weddington High School junior swimmer Kaylea Tolchin has been a key part of the Warriors suc-cess the last couple of seasons. The daughter of David and Katie Tolchin was named as the MVP for the team last season. Kaylea is ready to help the Warriors to another suc-cessful season this win-ter. Let’s go Beyond the Game to learn more about Kaylea.

What led you to choose the sport of swimming to focus on?“When I was in 2nd grade I started swimming on my neighborhood summer league team. I fell in love with the sport and decided I wanted to swim beyond sum-mer league. I started at SwimMAC in their JSL pro-gram for novice swimmers and have been swimming on the competitive year-round team ever since.”

What events do you swim in?“I swim all the strokes but my favorites are the 100 freestyle, 200 IM and 100 breast stroke.”

What is your best event and why?“100 freestyle because I have the opportunity to attack my walls and really focus on my breathing patterns.”

Can you describe your training schedule?“I practice at SwimMAC Monday through Friday in the afternoons after school or in the evenings for about 2 ½ hours each workout. Coach usually tries to write his practices for about 5,000 yards each session. We work on technique and speed in the pool as well as “dryland” metabolic conditioning and weight training.”

What are your top three athletic accomplish-ments?“Finishing 9th in the high school state championship meet in the 100 freestyle as a freshman. Being the highest point scorer on my summer league team for my age group for 5 consecutive years. Receiving the MVP award for the Weddington Swimming and Diving team for the 2014-15 season.”

Can you compare school swimming and club swimming?“Club swimming is year-round so it’s more intense training with a lot of focus on technical improvement. The swimmers at the club meets are all very technically sound and fast! The meets are very competitive.”

“High school swimming is a little more relaxed and fun. There’s a lot of school spirit with teammates cheering hard. It’s very exciting and makes me proud to score for my teammates and school.”

How well do you perform in the classroom? “I’m maintaining a 4.5 GPA and am in all AP and Hon-ors classes. I’m studying a lot but do enjoy participat-ing in club activities like Riley’s Catch and DECA.”

Are you involved in any community service projects?“Yes – I volunteer monthly to help make meals for homeless people in transition at Room in the Inn.”

Ellie qualified for the 2014 North Carolina Zone Team, and for the Futures swim meet at age 13. She is ready to begin the winter school season for the Mavericks where she will specialize in the 200 Butterfly. Ellie trains every day of the week except Sunday, with two sessions scheduled every Friday. Ellie enjoys both school and club swimming. “I take school and club swimming very seriously, but they are very different. With club swimming you’re training year round and the meets are spread out over a longer period of time. School swimming I could have two swim meets in one week, and the season is a short period of time, but this keeps me more focused. I’ve made so many friends through school and club swim, making both very special and important to me.”

Inside the classroom Ellie is a straight A student and enrolled in honors level classes. She is a lifetime member of Hawthorne Lane United Methodist Church where she in involved in many community service projects, such as Loaves and Fishes, Backpacks, the Crop Walk, and Parents Night Out - raising money to send her youth group on mission trips. For her birthday last October, Ellie had a team building party where they collected shoes to donate to Crisis Assistance Ministry.

Queen City Audio, Video and Appliances salutes Ellie VanNote for her continued commitment serving others in need in our community.

SPECIAL NEEDS CHEERLEADING LIGHTS UP OUR COMMUNITY

The Special Needs Angels & Diamonds Cheerleading and Gymnastics Teams certainly bring a smile to the eyes of our community. The team, now in its eighth year has expanded to two teams. The Diamonds an unassisted team, ages 10-18 with 20 participants and the Angels an assisted team for ages 3 1/2 - 10 with 17 members.

The program started when Connie Mulroy’s daughter, Brielle, who has Down Syndrome turned five. There had always been a desire to have a Special Needs Cheerleading team at Charlotte All-Star Cheerleading (CAC) but there was no one to run it. The team started with only 5 tiny athletes all ages 4-6 and grew very rapidly. The program doubled in size by the next year and just two years ago they needed to make two teams.

The Diamonds practice twice a week for a total of 3 1/2 hours and Angels practice once a week for 1 1/2 hours. They condition, tumble, stunt, fly and play every practice and really give 110%! We have been blessed with many volunteers that mostly consist of CAC cheerleaders. This program would not be successful without them! This year both teams will be competing at local events with their sister CAC teams.

Parents of these special needs athletes are also grateful because this is a program where everyone is accepted and is given the chance to be the best they can be.

Although integrating special needs in to sports is up and coming in the world, it is still very minimal. These young, energetic special needs athletes are just simply amazing! They might start inside the CAC pro-gram, timid with low muscle tone, energetic and unaware of bound-aries but give them a chance, a few weeks or months and you see such a significant change in their ability, behavior and attention spans.

To become involved as an athlete contact Connie Mulroy at [email protected], or contact ISC gymnastics and cheerleading at 704-246-8611.

The South Charlotte Sports Report salutes these amazing athletes for their determination and commitment to success. Keep reaching for the stars!
