YESTERDAY’S STUDENT ATHLETES MAKING WAVES IN THE FUTURE

With 11 plus years of publishing the South Charlotte Sports Report, there have been thousands of South Charlotte

High School Student-athletes to appear in our newspaper. It’s been very exciting to watch so many of the kids that have been featured go on to outstanding college careers and move into the professional world. In talking to many of these former high school students, they all mention how their focus on academics allowed them to have a successful college experience and to enter into the “real world” with an advantage.

Inside today’s newspaper, I penned a small column that focuses on continuing to write your story and how the book doesn’t end after high school graduation.

One of the very first Student-athletes to appear in the South Charlotte Sports Report took those words to heart. Charlotte Catholic graduate Alex Jensen played four years of baseball for Army, graduated from West Point and is now leading other soldiers in Kuwait. His leadership skills built way back in high school and further constructed at West Point, come into play every day as he serves our country. Many others have taken that same path to serve our country.

The list of high school Student-athletes that have graduated from presti-gious colleges with high level degrees is quite long. There have been many to attend Ivy League Schools. There are quite a few that have graduated from college and are now in medical school, law school, or other post-graduate degree pro-grams. Just to get an idea of how long the South Charlotte Sports Report has been published, a senior featured in our first issue is now 29 years old.

In addition to all the academic success, there have been quite a few students that were fortunate enough to turn their sports success into a professional career. Ardrey Kell High School graduate Alex Wood is 10-0 for the LA Dodgers this season. Richie Shaffer, a Providence graduate, has 18 home

runs this year and is playing in the Triple A All Star Game. Romeo Okwara has become a leading football player for the NY Giants.

Many are shining now on college sports teams in all levels of play. The list of success for former Student-athletes appearing in the South Charlotte Sports Re-port is quite extensive.

Learning organization, time management and study skills are deeply important to building for future success. Congratulations to all Student-athletes in and from the South Charlotte community. Weddington High School graduate Heidi Swope has enjoyed a very successful collegiate career for the Appalachian State Tennis Team.

With high school graduation now in the rear view mirror for so many South Charlotte students, it is time to look ahead to the future. Regardless of what you accomplished or even failed to accomplish in high school, you have the chance to keep writing your story. Whether you have chosen to attend college, joined the armed forces or move into the labor force, you still hold the pen and paper to keep writing your story. If you were not happy with how the past went, take this new opportunity to write a new story about your-self. Set new goals, build new relationships, change your ways, throw away the past and begin to focus on the future. Regardless of what it is that you will do following graduation, the environment is going to be different than high school. Very few if any of your high school friends are going to be a part of your new surroundings. Reach out and engage with your new community and strive to write your own story. Learn from mistakes in the past and make better decisions that will allow you to reach new heights in your life. Yes, the future could be harder and it will certainly be more challenging, but now is the time to be a stronger person and to work harder to achieve your goals. I wish all of the Class of 2017 graduates the very best in their new environment. Reach for the stars on a daily basis and see how high you can climb. What-ever you are doing, keep writing your story.

ElliE BowmanEllie Bowman, a local gymnast, has been named the Carefree Boat Club Rising Star of the Week. The 13 year old daughter of Eric and Michelle Bow-man completed her season with a phenomenal per-formance at the AAU National Championships. Her routines scored 9.700 on Vault, 9.150 on Uneven Bars, 9.250 on Balance Beam, and 9.825 on Floor Exercise.

In the past Ellie has enjoyed performing in the opening of the Kellogg’s Tour of Gymnastics Cham-pions at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte. Ellie en-joys competing and growing her skills in her sport. She trains nine hour a week and also spends one day dedicated to strength training. Her top events include the floor exercise and the vault.

Ellie talks about the most exciting part of her sport; “The most exciting part about gymnastics is that you get to express yourself through your body rather than words. You have this journey that you get to build. This journey includes close bonds with my gymnastics family, lessons, and amazing memories. There are always going to be ups and downs and small or bad injuries. However, the excitement of being able to recover from that pain or frustration is the best feeling because it makes you push yourself ten times harder.”

Inside the classroom, Ellie has found great success, recording all A’s and one B. She hopes to continue to perform well in the classroom and inside the gym. Congratulations to Ellie Bowman for being named the Carefree Boat Club Rising Star of the Week.

Tyler rigoTCharlotte Country Day School baseball player Tyler Rigot has been named the winner of the Prep Spotlight Athlete of the Week Award, Presented by Tutoring Club. The rising junior left handed pitcher is the son of Greg and Cynthia Rigot. Ty-ler has traveled all across the country playing baseball tourna-ments and just recently made a college commitment to attend Bucknell. Even with all of the exciting places Tyler has traveled to, his favorite baseball memory came this spring at Charlotte Country Day. Tyler was able to catch the first pitch at the school’s Breast Cancer Awareness Game and it was thrown by his mother Cynthia, a breast cancer survivor.

This summer, Tyler is once again traveling to showcase baseball tournaments across the Southeast. He has also been invited to participate in a couple of top talent showcases. With two more years of high school, Tyler will work to become the best player he can be entering Bucknell. Tyler spoke about the process of making a college choice early in high school. “I was very fortunate to have been invited to visit several different schools during my decision process. It was very important to me to select a school with both great academic and athletic programs. I also wanted to play for coaches with a track record of developing their players and with a common set of goals and objectives. I met with Coach Heather (Head Coach) and Coach Neitz (Pitching Coach) from Bucknell on multiple visits and we developed a great relationship over the last nine months. Bucknell offers all the academic areas that I am inter-ested in pursuing, has a phenomenal campus and facilities, and has been to the NCAA Baseball Playoffs seven times. They also played in the Patriot League Championship series this year but came up just shy of their eighth appearance in the NCAA’s. I am very excited to continue my education and baseball career at Bucknell and to play for Coach Heather and Coach Neitz. I would like to thank Coach Mike Hennessey from CCDS for all his assistance and support throughout the process along with my Parents and other Coaches who continue to help and support me.” Tyler also works hard in the classroom and he carries a 3.65 grade point average. Tyler is a member of the National Junior Honor Society and serves as Treasurer of RICE (Refugee Immigration Care and Education.) He is also a member of the Spanish Club and the Athletic Leadership Club. Congratulations to Tyler Rigot for being named the Prep Spotlight Athlete of the Week Award, Presented by Tutoring Club.

Defensively the Spartans were anchored by crease defenders Avery Dippert and Carley Wilton. Wilton was able to score twice on coast to coast clears to help on the offensive side as well. The tenacious defense and rugged play helped Sun Valley limit opponents the whole season. Megan Stein brought great attitude and effort to the squad as well. The entire team knew that if an opponent did get through the defense, goalie Jaleah Ladson would be there to shut them down. The 8th grader had 86 saves this season. She was a rock the entire year. No doubt she anchored the squad defensively. Mackenzie Aubry was set to help in goal as well, but an early sea-son injury kept her out of play for the year. Congratulations to the Sun Valley Middle School Lacrosse Team for being named the Sonny’s BBQ Team of the Week.

BreakoutStarof theWeek “Honoring Student-Athletes Preparing For Future Success”

KathErinE EmoryCuthbertson Middle School rising eighth grader Katherine Emory has been named the Karsey Glass Breakout Star of the Week. The 13 year old daughter of Terry and Suzanne Emory is an outstanding softball player. She plays catcher, outfield and second base for her school and travel team. Katherine was awarded the Most Outstanding Player award at the recent Battle of the Border Softball Showcase.

Katherine has made many favorite memories playing softball.

“It’s hard to choose just one memory but I always enjoy time with my teammates. I love driving to tournaments with my dad and listening to the playlist that we made. I remember hearing a coach tell his girls to move up when I was at bat. His pitcher was really good and I was nervous. I hit a hard line drive down third and the third baseman wasn’t ready. I ended up getting a double, surprising them and me!”

Inside the classroom, Katherine is an outstanding student and has been a member of the A/B Honor Roll each grading period. She is a member of the BETA Club and at-

tended the Early Accelerator Program at North Carolina School for Science and Math this summer. Congratulations to Katherine Emory for being named the Karsey Glass Breakout Star of the Week.
