The 17 year old daughter of Jeff and Karen Devine graduated with a 4.75 grade point average and now will head to Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania to continue her education and become a collegiate swimmer. Karley’s story goes all the way back to her first time on a swim team here in Charlotte. “My mom put me in summer league swimming at age 6, she always said it was such a fun part of summer for her as a kid. I tried it and loved it too. I swam for Olde Georgetowne for 11 years. After my second summer, I really liked it and was pretty good at it and wanted to swim more than just in the summer. I swam on several programs including JSL at SwimMac Carolina, and the team at Harris Y before making the competitive team at SwimMac Carolina at 9 years old. I have been swimming there ever since. I am currently a member of Senior 2 at MAC.” After improving as a swimmer each year, Karley finally began to seriously consider swimming in college a year ago. “Swimming in college was always on my mind but I was not quite sure it was what I wanted. Early in the summer of my senior year, several former SwimMac Carolina swim- mers came back from college to practice with us, and they really loved swimming in college, and that made me think this was something I wanted to do. That is when I started looking at schools that I could swim at and ones that met my academic goals.” Karley had qualified in the 500 Freestyle for the NCHSAA 4A Championship Meet and her times had improved every season. She earned sectional cuts in the 500 Free and the 1000 Free. Karley was a key contributor every year at South Meck as her Sabres team competed for the conference, regional and state cham- pionships. In her senior year, Karley was named as a team captain. She had worked hard enough to earn the opportunity to swim in college, but for Karley, academics came first, so she knew it would be a hard search to find the perfect mix of academics and athletics. “While researching schools that I could qualify to swim at but still fit my rigorous academic requirements, Gettys- burg was one of the schools I came across. At that time, I found there were a couple of local swimmers that were cur- rently attending Gettysburg and really loved it. I went on a recruiting trip last October and I found that I enjoyed the school, the team and the coaches.” With Gettysburg becoming her choice, the academics part took over. “After initially being accepted to Gettysburg with the Presidential Scholarship, I was still undecided. I was also interested in another small school where I could swim and then also UNC Chapel Hill (where I could do club swim- ming). During this decision process, Gettysburg College came back and offered me the Lincoln Scholarship (one of their highest academic scholarships), that scholarship and an impromptu trip up to visit the school again, helped so- lidify my decision that Gettysburg was the school for me.” Gettysburg is not only bringing in an impressive swim- mer, they are also taking on an All-American level student. Karley has been on the A/B Honor Roll all four years of high school. She is a member of the National Honor Society, The Beta Club, Mu Alpha Theta, National Honor Society and she served as President of Compassion In Action Service Club. Karley also is active in the St. Stephens UMC Church Youth Group. The academic success didn’t come without major sacrifice. “My schedule was very demanding between swimming and school, there were times I had to sacrifice to make sure I was succeeding in both. I had a very rigor- ous school schedule with honors and AP classes along with 6 days’/week prac- tices and sometimes doubles once or twice a week. But with this busy schedule, it also kept me very disciplined and focused on what I wanted to achieve in the pool, in school and in the future.” Take a bow Karley Devine, you were a true Student-athlete at South Meck and are now ready to take on the challenge of swimming and studying at Gettysburg College. The South Charlotte Sports Report wishes Karley Devine the very best of luck as she heads north to complete her education and compete in the pool. Ben Shelley, a rising senior at Marvin Ridge High School, has been named the Queen City Audio, Video, and Appliances Community Service Award winner. For the first couple of years of his high school career, the son of Bob and Nicole Shelley was a two sport athlete with very little off season time. Ben enjoyed participating in both winter track for the Mavericks along with lacrosse in the spring. However, by his junior year he decided to pursue the sport he enjoyed most, dropping lacrosse and switching to full seasons of track, both spring and winter. His choice did not come unrewarded, as Ben ran a personal best of 38.54 seconds in the 300 meter hurdles event for the Mavericks last May, where he became a regional champion and qualified for the New Balance Nationals.

For the past two years, Ben has led and participated in Charlotte Recycles with his younger brother Peter Shelley. The program created by their older brother, Sam Shelley, who passed it down to them among graduating from Marvin Ridge High School. Through Charlotte Recycles, Ben helps collect recyclables from several stores across the area and delivers them to a recycling plant, rather than the goods just ending up in the dumpster. In addition to Charlotte Recycles, Ben also began volunteering with the Freedom School of Charlotte this summer. This program is made for kids who lack the resources for learning during the summer. Ben has taken it upon himself to help these kids by aiding in their writing and reading skills through fun, academic games.

With such a stacked resume and a remarkable GPA of 5.04, college plans are most definitely in Ben’s future. He hopes to run at an Ivy League school, but is also inter-ested in the University of South Carolina and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Wherever Ben ends up, we know he will continue to give back and better the community. Queen City Audio, Video and Appliances salutes Ben Shelley for his continued commitment to serving others in our community.

PARKER MANLEYWritten by Will Strickland, Ardrey Kell 2015; Appalachian State 2019

Charlotte Catholic High School rising junior Parker Manley, 16, has been named the MACS/Arbor Construction Group Good Sport of the Week. The son of Rick and Kate Manley plays both baseball and football for the Cougars and earned his way onto the A/B Honor Roll for three straight semesters by taking multiple Advanced Placement classes. Parker began playing baseball as soon as he was able to hold a bat in his hands. “My parents have videos of

me hitting a wiffle ball in my bedroom at the age of two-years old,” he said. With the sport practically being a facet of his life from the very be-ginning, it’s no surprise that he has grown into a very successful athlete. As a freshman, Parker not only started at both offensive and defensive positions for the Charlotte Catholic football team, he also earned a spot in the baseball pitching rotation. Academically, Parker feels his parents are to credit for his success. “The goals I have for the future as well as the countless things my parents have provided for me have made me into the student I am today.” Congratulations to Parker Manley for being named the MACS/Arbor Construction Group Good Sport of the Week.

Sydney Yoder is a 10th grade student at South Mecklenburg High School where she has a 4.2 grade point average. Sydney, the daughter of Matthew and Michelle Yoder, lettered in two varsity sports (basketball and softball) as a freshman. She also earned All-Conference Honors in softball. Sydney not only ex-emplifies a great attitude on the field, but also strives to make a difference off it. Let’s go Beyond the Game to learn more about Sydney.

When did you begin playing softball? Why?“I started playing when I was 7 at South Charlotte Recreation

Association, because my Dad signed me up hoping that I’d have fun and love the sport. (My Dad played baseball growing up.)”

How do you believe sports have helped shape you as a person?“Both softball and basketball have led me to meeting new people. I am lucky to play with some of my best friends!”

Other than softball, what is your greatest passion?“I love finding and listening to new music and traveling. I love the beach, but I also love to go to the mountains to snowboard!” Have you thought about college plans?“Yes, I am hoping to play softball in college. I am currently playing in showcase tournaments with my Team NC team and attending several college camps, as I search to find the right fit for me.” What has motivated you to become such a strong student?“I want to attend a good college and know that it takes good grades to be ac-cepted. Also, my peers have influenced me through group study sessions.” Are you involved in any community service projects?“I am part of the IDEA Academy at South Mecklenburg High School and we have been a part of different projects helping the community. Also, my Mom and I delivered purses full of toiletries and snacks to homeless women uptown this past winter.”

Boating Without Owning - It’s About TIME!

GABBy BAyloGBy Jarrett Corder, UNC Chapel Hill Class of 2018

Marvin Ridge High School rising sopho-more Gabby Baylog has been named the Carefree Boats Rising Star of the Week. The 14 year old is an excellent student, the epitome of a team player on the field and always strives to be a great leader.

Gabby began playing softball at the age of six at WCWAA and has become quite

the player. Gabby’s play with her Team NC Softball Showcase team placed her in front of many colleges, but the opportunity to commit to Coastal Carolina early on won out. Now Gabby can enjoy competing her final three years of soft-ball with a tough decision already made.

Inside the classroom, Gabby is an outstanding student. She won the the Academic Excellence leadership Award for Business, and made the “A” Honor Roll, with a 4.25 GPA. Congratulations to Gabby Baylog for being named the winner of the Carefree Boats Rising Star Award.

Rising Star Award

Jack crockerWritten by: Jarrett Corder, UNC-Chapel Hill 2018

Jack Crocker, a Carmel Christian School senior, has been honored with the Shoeless Enterprises Leadership Award. Jack started playing baseball when he was just five years old as a way to hang out with his friends. When he was eight, he hit a walk-off home run to win the state championship. And now, as a senior in high school, he has been named all-con-ference for two straight seasons!

Jack has been a model leader throughout his career. One of his defining moments was last spring when he helped lead his team to a one-run win over its biggest rival and he drove in four runs on four hits. He has learned how to hit a ball and swing a bat, but sports have taught him much more

than that. Sports have helped him be more patient and tolerant and have taught him the value of hard work. While he is a great athlete, Jack says his biggest passion is helping others and he does so through technology. In college, he plans to study how to put technology to use to improve the lives of others. He was awarded the Hancock Technology Award for his work in computer science and served as a software engineer for his schools STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) team. But, that is just the start! NASA chose to send his teams’ project to the International Space Station. He has even been selected to lead his school’s STEM team next year. Jack is a proven leader in many aspects and he is committed to making a difference. He is humble and consistently credits his great coaches, teachers and parents for helping him get to where he is today. Congratulations to Jack Crocker on winning the Shoeless Enterprises Leadership Award!

Breakout Star of the Week “Honoring Student-Athletes Preparing For Future Success”

BRITT FUllERWritten by Mallory Marks, Marvin Ridge High School 2015; UNC Chapel Hill 2019

Britt Fuller, a rising sophomore at Charlotte latin High School, has been named the Karsey Glass Breakout Star of the week. The 15-year old son of Jenny and Bill Fuller just finished his freshman year of high school, carrying an impressive 3.8 grade point average. However there is more to Fuller than just brains; he also brings well-rounded baseball skills to the table and is definitely a force to look out for in the next few years at Charlotte latin High School.

At only 15 years old, Britt has been playing baseball for over half of his life. “I began playing baseball at Myers Park Trinity league when I was 7 years old because both of my older brothers played as well.”

Following in his older brothers footsteps was a great decision made by Britt, as it has led him to some of his favorite moments in sports.

Britt’s batting skills have not left him since little league, as he is currently batting with a .400 average for his summer travel team, an impres-sive batting average for such a young player. So it comes as no surprise when Britt says his favorite part about playing the game is batting at the plate, along with playing first base

Down the road, Britt says a goal of his is to play baseball at the college level. After making the Headmaster’s list and A/B Honor Roll his freshman year at Charlotte latin High School, Britt’s goal is well within his reaches. Britt

can also stack volunteering with Autism Charlotte and the Golden Retriever Rescue Club onto his resume, and much more as he contin-ues his high school career the next three years at Charlotte latin High School. Congratulations to Britt Fuller for winning the Karsey Glass Breakout Star of the Week Award.

Volume 11, Issue 6 Page 7

Marvin Ridge High School rising Senior Alex Leshock has had a couple of the best years a high school base-ball player could ask for. Winning the NCHSAA 3A baseball state championship two years in a row, the Marvin Ridge Mavericks have been a force to reckon with and Alex has been right at the forefront of that. The son of Jim and Karen Leshock finished with a batting average of .450 in his junior season. However, Alex’s skills didn’t stop once he was on base. Totaling twenty stolen bases this past season, Alex led the Mav-ericks in stolen bases for the 2016 season, helping lead the team to its second state championship in a row. Let’s go Beyond The Game with Alex Leshock. When did you begin playing baseball and why?“I started playing T-Ball when I was 5 years old and then moved on to travel ball when I was 8 years old. My older brother, AJ, played and I wanted to do ev-erything he did. Also, there were a lot of kids on my street and we were always playing a sport. Baseball was the easiest for everyone to play.”

What are your top three athletic accomplishments?“Being selected as Southern Carolina Conference MVP and also Player of the Year and being named to the South Charlotte Sports Report All South Team.”

How did it feel to win the State Championship this year?“It was absolutely amazing! We are a very close knit team and we even spend a lot of time together off the field. Very few players get the opportunity to play in a state championship game, let alone win two in a row. That moment when your team gets the final out and you realize what you’ve accomplished, it’s indescrib-able.” What do you feel is your biggest contribution to the Marvin Ridge Baseball team?“My biggest contribution was probably at the plate. I managed to bat .450 with 54 hits.”

Have you made any college plans?“I would love to play baseball or football in college or even both if given the opportunity.”

How well do you perform in the classroom?“I maintain A/B average. Playing football and baseball hasn’t left me with a lot of free time.”

Alex would also like to thank Coach Mennitt, Coach Demaine, and Coach Putman. “They push me to play my best. I can’t thank them enough for all that they’ve done for me on and off the field.”

Q SHACK COACH OF THE MONTH

Coach Ngaio CarlisleWritten by Adam Kazura, Charlotte Latin School Class of 2014, University of South Carolina Class of 2018

Coach Ngaio Carlisle has been named the Q Shack Coach of the Month. The multi-sport coach for Charlotte Latin School has brought success to every team she has coached. Ngaio emigrated from Zimbabwe in 1983 and began her illustrious coaching career at Latin in 1984.

She started as a varsity field hockey coach which she coached for 19 years until she moved down to coach JV field hockey for four years. During her time as the varsity coach, her team won two Carolina Cup titles, the championships for field hockey before the NCISAA recognized field hockey as a high school sport. During her time as the field hockey coach, Ngaio assisted on several different teams for the Hawks. From 1987-1993 and 1995-1996

she was an assistant varsity track coach. From 1993-1997 she was an assistant for the varsity swimming team. From 1997 until last year she was the varsity girls track head coach where, during her tenure, they won six straight state championships in a row. This past year was Ngaio’s last year of coach as she is retiring after 32 year of teaching and coaching. Students who have played under her have known her for being tough and demand-ing, but her kindness and her care for her players is unparalleled. Everyone who has been taught or played under her is better for it as she has the ability and desire to improve all those she oversees. Ngaio Carlisle has been an iconic part of the Latin community and will be greatly missed.

BEYOND THE GAME WITH SOPHIE WINGFIELD

Written by Will Strickland, Ardrey Kell High School 2015; Appalachian State 2019

For Ardrey Kell rising junior Sophie Wingfield, success on the volleyball court comes as often as it does in the classroom. The 16-year old daugh-ter of Amy Wingfield has been playing volleyball since she was nine and things have only gotten better ever since. Thanks to her leadership as captain, the 2015 Ardrey Kell junior varsity team finished with a perfect 19-0 record, the first time either school volleyball team has ever accom-plished an undefeated season. To learn more about how she’s created a collection of both tro-phies and perfect report cards, let’s go Beyond the Game with Sophie Wingfield. When did you begin playing volleyball? Why?“I began playing volleyball in the 3rd grade when I was nine. I started playing because I wanted to play a competitive sport that was new and exciting. Plus, my older sister had been involved in some small league playing.”

What are your top three athletic accomplishments?“My top three athletic accomplishments would be achieving an undefeated JV season at Ardrey Kell as the captain; qualifying for Nationals on my club team two years in a row; and when I was 12, my very first season on a club team, I won the MVP award at a regional tournament.” As you look back on your high school career, what are a couple of memo-ries that really stand out to you?“Looking back on my high school career, memories that stand out are the 2015 un-defeated season and getting to play and succeed with my sister, which was a really special experience for my family.” Have you put any thought into what’s next for you after high school?“After high school, I would like to attend college to major in psychology and eventually get a PhD. I would also like to study abroad and learn about different cul-tures. I’m still debating whether or not I would like to play volleyball in college, but if not, I would prefer to attend UNC-Chapel Hill due to their extensive psychology program.” How well do you perform in the classroom? “In the classroom, I am a straight-A student with a 4.75-weighted, 4.0-unweighted GPA.” What has led you to become such a strong student?“I would say that motivation and determination has led me to be successful in school. I have a main goal, which is to eventually get a PhD, and I do all I can to achieve it.”

Are you involved in any community service projects?“I am involved in the ‘Knights in Action’ community service pro-gram at Ardrey Kell and my fam-ily is consistently involved with the charity we do through volleyball at school, like Serve for the Cure. We’re also very involved with the Haygood/Grady Memorial in Kiawah Island, SC, which is in honor of my grandfather, Linwood Grady.”

Written by Adam Kazura, Charlotte Latin School 2014, University of South Carolina 2018

Charlotte Latin School rising senior, Robert Fuller, has been named the Architech Sports and Physical Therapy Student Athlete of the Week. The 18 year old son of Bill and Jenny Fuller is a three sport athlete for the Hawks and has earned several individual honors for his accomplish-ments in multiple sports. Along with being a great athlete, Robert excels in the classroom, having been named Cum Laude (top 10% of his class) and participating in the De-bate Club and Student Council.

Robert is a diverse athlete, playing football, basketball, and doing field events for the track and field team. He earned honors last year for football by being named to the CISAA All Conference Second Team.

Robert is very active in the community, as well. He developed and runs a public speaking program in coordination with Charlotte Mecklenburg School’s After School Enrichment Program. Robert believes that public speaking and critical thinking are crucial skills for leadership and tries to impart these traits through his program. Congratulations to Robert Fuller for being named the Architech Sports and Physical Therapy Student Athlete of the Week.

CAROLINE PETRONISWritten by Will Strickland, Ardrey Kell 2015; Appalachian State 2019

As a rising senior for the Ardrey Kell Knights varsity softball program, 17-year old Caroline Petronis is looking to build upon past successes and make her final year her best. With the help of her parents, Ken and Dee Dee Petronis, as well as her twin brother, Daniel, Caroline was able to make the late transition from being a soccer goalie to learning the game of softball in middle school. “One of my teachers at Jay M. Robinson, Mrs. Crowley, coached the softball team, and she encouraged me to try it.” Along with her speed on the base-paths (finished with second most steals on the varsity team last season), Caroline also excels in school, as displayed by her 5.0 weighted GPA and membership in four honor societ-ies, including the National Honor Society.

Off the field, Caroline keeps herself busy by participating in the Student-Athlete Ad-visory Council, the Girls Engineering Change Club, Student Government (where she will serve as Senior Class Vice President), and is currently participating in the North Carolina Governor’s School summer program with a focus in natural science.

Caroline hopes to attend a four-year university somewhat close to home with an in-terest in public health and bioethics. Congratulations to Caroline Petronis for being named the Architect Sports and Physical Therapy Student-Athlete of the Week!
