The daughter of Leonard and Chandra Wheeler has earned the opportunity to compete for the Georgia Tech Track team this coming fall. Lindsey, an ultra-fast sprinter competes in many events, including the; 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 4x100m relay, 4x200m relay, 4x400m relay and 4x800m relay. Her record of success attracted the attention of the Georgia Tech track coaches and Lindsey accepted their offer to compete for the ACC school. Lindsey grew up in an athletic family, her father, Leonard, played many years in the NFL with the Bengals, Vikings and Panthers. This gave Lindsay the insight needed to learn to compete on a higher level. “He understands the platform that sports can provide an individual,” Lindsey said. “He has been a great mentor providing the necessary life tools to assist me in being successful on and off the track. He has trained me my whole life and he gives me insight on the mental aspect of playing sports. A valuable lesson that I have learned from my dad is that my athletic success is preparing me for my life success.” With top times in the 400M of 56.6, 200M of 25.0 and the 100M of 12.2, Lindsay has been able to succeed on a very high level. She was recently named the Girls MVP of the SoMeck 8 Confer- ence after winning the 100M, 200M and 400M races at the conference meet. Lindsey advanced to regionals and states in all three events. Lindsey has also competed nationally in the USATF Junior Olympics. Her proudest moment came in the 2014 national event held in Houston, Texas last year. After catching the eye of Georgia Tech, it didn’t take long for Lindsey to choose her college. “When I went on my official visit to Georgia Tech, I knew immediately that it was the right fit for me. I loved the campus, and I connected well with all the girls. Georgia Tech has a great track pro- gram and phenomenal academic reputation. The coach who recruited me, Coach Butler, was a huge factor in me choosing Georgia Tech because she stuck by me throughout my senior year. She will be a good female role model for me as my track coach.” Growing up Lindsey was very athletic, playing soccer and competing as a cheerleader before choosing to go year round in track last year as a junior. That decision played a large role in placing Lindsey in position to compete in college. In addition to finding success on the track, Lindsey is a strong student. She carries a 4.0 grade point average and is a member of the National Technical Honor Society, HOSA club, Project Elevate, and Key Club. She is also a volunteer at Transformation Church and helps out in the soup kitchen downtown and with making blankets for orphanages through the Key Club. Lindsey hopes to major in Biology at Georgia Tech and to one day work in the medical field. With her commitment, drive and passion for success in the classroom, Lindsey Wheeler is a strong choice for success in life. IF YOU ARE NOT TALKING TO COLLEGE COACHES, YOU ARE NOT BEING RECRUITED

By Chuck HowardBecoming identified and recognized is the first step that has to happen in order

for a college to put you on their recruiting board. Once the athlete is identified and recognized by a college staff and the coaches reach out to them, then they are in the recruiting process. The next phase is the evaluation portion of the process. Coach-es have to actually determine if this athlete is indeed a college caliber kid. Then the comparison comes versus other kids that play the same position. If the athlete survives the gauntlet he/she will move to the offer phase of the process. Here is where the school offers a non-binding pledge to provide financial assistance to an athlete. They key to this is that offers are non-binding and can be pulled at the discretion of the institution, and that not all offers are full rides. Each sport has varying numbers of scholarships. Basically, D-1 Football and Basketball are the only sports that offer full-rides. Other “minor” sports have to spread athletic dollars out over the entire team. D-2 programs have fewer athletic scholarships to provide compared to D-1 and D-3 schools only offer academic monies to their athletes. Not until the athlete signs a National Letter of Intent are the school and the athlete bound to any agreement. Families must understand that the majority of what they read on social media regarding offers is HYPE. National Signing Day and/or the signing period will determine who actually gets the scholarship to at-tend the institution and play football.

So as you can see, there is a significant amount of effort and communication that is required to get to the point where a student/athlete gets to sign an NLI. The old statement, “If I am good enough, they will find me”, will have you behind with regard to the recruiting process, and could, potentially, leave you out of it entirely.

If you are or have a 2016 graduate your recruiting window is closing rapidly. 10 months to the next April signing day. Less than that for National Signing Day in football! If you are or have a 2017, 2018 or even ’19 graduate the earlier coaches know of you or your student-athlete, the greater their chance of receiving multiple scholarship offers-regardless of sport. While you delay – others are moving up on that coaches recruiting white board. Take control of the Dream NOW.

Ardrey Kell High School sophomore Hallie Peele has found national success in the sport of gym-nastics. The daughter of Dana and Bill Peele has already committed to attend college and compete for the University of Pittsburgh. Hallie has been in sport of gymnastics nearly her entire life and she spends countless hours training to prepare for competitions. Let’s go Beyond The Game to learn more about Hallie.

When did you begin gymnastics and why?“I began at age 4 at Lightning City Gymnastics in Tampa, FL. My preschool friend invited me to a class and I loved it!”

What are your top three accomplishments in the sport?“I am a Junior Olympics Nationals Qualifier (2015). I placed second All Around in the Region 8, Level 10 Regional Championship (2015) and 5th All Around Level 9 Eastern National Champion-ship (2013).”

Describe a typical week of training?“I train 24 hours per week, 4 hours per day after school and Saturday. Lots of conditioning and ro-tating to each apparatus to practice routines and learn new skills.”

What is your best event and why?“My favorite is bars but I seem to get my highest scores on vault. I have a lot of power and you get two tries on vault so it’s not as nerve-wracking as beam.”

What schools did you consider for college and what led you to the choice you made?“I had unofficial visits at the University of Pitts-burgh, Kentucky, Ohio State, Chapel Hill, and Michigan. I went to summer camp at Pittsburgh and loved the coaching staff. Pitt was always my first choice. I want to pursue a nursing degree and Pittsburgh has one of the best public nursing schools in the U.S.”

Where are some of the places you have com-peted over the years?“Charleston, SC, Asheville, NC, Greensboro, NC, Fort Worth, TX, Wilmington, NC, Athens, GA, Orlando, FL, Bradenton, FL, Las Vegas, NV, Battle Creek, MI and soon to be Des Moines, IA for Na-tionals.”

Between now and college, what do you hope to accomplish?“I hope to qualify for Junior Olympic Nationals each year before college and place in the top 10. Also, I hope to continue learning new gymnastics skills and perfecting the old ones as well as main-taining excellent grades.”

How have you kept up with studies and gym-nastics?“I don’t have a lot of free time. I’m up late nights studying and spend lots of time studying in the car when I travel to competitions.”

How do you perform in the classroom?“I currently have a 4.1 GPA, taking mostly honors classes.”

BEYOND THE GAME WITH NATALIE ITALIANO

Charlotte Catholic junior lacrosse player Natalie Italiano is one of the top lacrosse players in the community. The daughter of Steve and Amy Italiano has been a starter for the team since her freshman year and she was named a 2014 Honorable Mention High School All American. Her talents played a key role in helping the Cougars win the 2014 State Championship. With the season coming to an end soon, Natalie and her teammates are hard at work on a repeat title. Let’s go Beyond The Game to learn more about Natalie.

When did you start playing lacrosse and why?“I started playing lacrosse in 7th grade by doing small girls lacrosse clinics. I grew up watching my brother play lacrosse and I wanted to give it a try!”

What is the favorite part of the game for you?“I’m a very competitive person so I love when the games are close. I think the better the competition, the better my teammates and I push ourselves to win.”

What are your top three athletic accomplish-ments?“My top three athletic accomplishments are starting as a freshman for the Charlotte Catholic Varsity Team, mak-ing the North Carolina National Tournament A Team, and winning the State Championship in 2014.”

What is your favorite memory from lacrosse?“My favorite lacrosse memory is winning the State Championship this past season along with the Boys Var-sity Team. Not only was it a huge accomplishment that both teams had worked for all season, but it also made the bonds of both teams grow incredibly strong. I love being able to share the State Title with some of my best friends.”

What are you lacrosse goals this year? “For me, I would like to improve my defensive part of the game. I think even on attack it is important to utilize defensive skills in re-defending and in the midfield. As a team we are always working towards our ultimate goal, to win another state championship.”

How well do you perform in the classroom?“I have maintained A-B honor roll in the classroom all three years of high school.”

Are you involved in any community service activities?“I try to give back to younger girls who are new to lacrosse and want to play by giving them lessons on weekdays and weekends.”

Do you want to be the best?! You must train with the best!

Summer Training Program

June 22- August 12, 6-715pm @ Providence High School

Charlotte Latin School senior Jackson Monnin has found great success on the football and lacrosse fields during his prep career. The son of Tim and Sarah Mon-nin will travel north in the Fall to attend Lehigh University where he will continue his pursuit of lacrosse success. Let’s go Beyond The Game with Jackson Mon-nin to learn more about this outstanding Student-athlete.

What positions do you play in la-crosse and football?“I play Lacrosse midfielder which means clearing the ball up field and playing both offense and defense. On football for the last four years I have played varsity at outside linebacker and running back on the Latin Hawks Football Team.”

What led you to choose lacrosse as a sport to pursue in college?“Lacrosse is a unique sport that relies on strong stick skills, athleticism, and field awareness in order to be successful. It appeals to my aggressive nature in that contact and hitting becomes a critical part of playing good defense, however it also requires a level headed approach when playing on offense. Playing midfield I have to be able to flip that switch and do both, which is a challenge that I really enjoy. I love lacrosse, and am excited to play it at the next level among the top players in the nation.”

What are your top three athletic accom-plishments?“I’m honored to be a member of our three-time state championship Latin Hawks Lacrosse Team, and it goes without a doubt at the top. Next would be being voted a USLacrosse All-American, and voted team captain and All-State linebacker this past fall in football.”

How did you decide on Lehigh and what were your other choices?“Playing summer travel lacrosse on TeamCarolina I was lucky enough to visit many great schools on the East Coast and had exposure to many college coaches. Dur-ing my decision process, I considered schools with a balance between strong academ-ics and great lacrosse. Lehigh, Maryland, Richmond, the Naval Academy, and several schools in New England were in the mix. Le-high provided a superb academic setting that I felt comfortable with including top ranked Engineering and Business programs and located in the mountains of eastern Penn-sylvania. Head Coach Kevin Cassese was a strong draw for me. He is currently coach-ing the Team USA men’s national lacrosse team. When I visited the campus and met some of the students and my future team-mates I immediately felt like Lehigh was a place I could thrive both in the classroom and on the lacrosse field.”

What is your role on the Charlotte Latin School Lacrosse team?“Latin Lacrosse has been a really special experience. We have 22 seniors on our team and we’ve enjoyed a great four year run together. As a midfielder, it is my job to play both offense and defense and the transition in between. Whether it be to clear the ball or try to prevent them from clearing it, there is a lot to be done. With so many weapons

on Latin’s team offensively, its my job to make sure that I’m active and force the defense to react so we can get an advantage either by scoring or drawing the double team and assisting my team-mates.”

What do you hope to study at Lehigh?“Next fall I will be enrolled in the Inte-grated Business and Engineering Hon-ors Program, which is a unique program combining the two studies simultane-ously rather than just focusing on one. It offers students the ability to work within teams on projects, obtain real world experience from visiting speakers and in-ternships, and to study not only business concepts, but the way in which the field is being shaped based on the technologies of the age.”

How have you performed in the classroom?“I have made Dean’s List (Honor Roll) every semester of high school at Latin. I will graduate with a 4.1 GPA and 5 AP credits. Along with my partner have brought home some hardware from State and Regional tournaments as a member of the Forensics/Debate team. I am also a member of the CLS Ser-vice Society for having completed community service across a wide spectrum from tutoring at an economically disadvantaged school to building projects at the various non-profit centers.”

Winning Smiles

Wyatt RushCuthbertson Middle School seventh grader Wyatt Rush has been named the Quimby and Collins Orthodontics “Wired For Excellence” Award Winner. Wyatt is the son of Jeff and Kim Rush and he plays football and baseball for the Cavaliers. He also plays for the Union County Vipers 13U Baseball Team.

Wyatt’s top sports memory “occurred when my parents moved away from Tennessee due to my Dad’s job transfer. I stayed behind with my Grandmother to finish the baseball season in both Little League All-Stars and my travel team, the Edge A’s. During this period my All-Star team won the District 5 championship. During the district championship game I hit back to back homeruns. At the same time my travel team was playing in the USSSA World Series in Kingsport, TN. I was able to play in some of those games as well, and my team eventually won the SE 12U AA World Series Title. I also have greatly enjoyed playing for the Cuthbertson Middle School Team the last two years with my great teammates and coaches!”

Inside the classroom, Wyatt is an A/B Honor Roll student and his favorite class is Math. Congratulations to Wyatt Rush for being named the Quimby and Collins Orthodontics “Wired For Excellence” Award Winner.
