It has been so exciting to become a part of the wonderful South Charlotte community. From day one, the best part of my job has been hearing kids talk about seeing their photo inside the South Charlotte Sports Report. It brings back the same memories I had as a youngster growing up in Salisbury, NC. As I have mentioned before, I still have many of the newspaper stories and pho- tos from my childhood. No matter how we grow or which direction we take in the future, my number one priority will always be to provide this same op- portunity to as many good kids as we can. In looking back at the path I have traveled from issue 1 to issue 100, it has been quite a ride. What started out as an idea of having a youth sports newspaper has grown to include 20 sports camps throughout the year, a professional youth sports photography company, an events company that hosts the following; The Carolinas Gridiron Clas- sic Pop Warner Football Bowl Game, The Battle of the Border All Star Baseball and Softball Show- case, three youth basketball tournaments, The La- dies Sports Summit, The Winter Training Baseball Academy, an Arm Care Clinic for baseball players and my pride and joy, The Greater Charlotte Hot Stove League Dinner. Please give every adver- tiser you see in The South Charlotte Sports Report the opportunity to earn your business. I am very proud of the direction the paper has taken. We have maintained our original commit- ment to print positive news that is suitable for every member of the South Charlotte family. We have done our best to only publish stories on stu- dent-athletes that are committed on the field of play and more importantly in the classroom. Our philosophy has been from day one, if someone can’t work hard in the classroom, then our paper isn’t the place to highlight their efforts. We believe very strongly in the concept of student first, athlete second. I have also enjoyed taking on the role as an ad- vocate for saving middle school sports in the Char- lotte Mecklenburg School system. At the very first hint of middle school sports being eliminated, I went to work to offer solutions. THE 100TH ISSUE OF THE SOUTH CHARLOTTE SPORTS REPORT

By Tripp Roakes, Publisher

Wow! It’s so exciting to reach the landmark of 100 issues of The South Charlotte Sports Report. Without the incredible support of our advertisers and readers here in South Charlotte this dream would have never become reality. I want to thank all of you for helping us make it to 100 issues. It has been so exciting to become a part of the wonderful South Charlotte community.

From day one, the best part of my job has been hearing kids talk about seeing their photo inside the South Charlotte Sports Report. It brings back the same memories I had as a youngster growing up in Salisbury, NC. As I have mentioned before, I still have many of the newspaper stories and pho-tos from my childhood. No matter how we grow or which direction we take in the future, my number one priority will always be to provide this same op-portunity to as many good kids as we can.

In looking back at the path I have traveled from issue 1 to issue 100, it has been quite a ride. What started out as an idea of having a youth sports newspaper has grown to include 20 sports camps throughout the year, a professional youth sports photography company, an events company that hosts the following; The Carolinas Gridiron Clas-sic Pop Warner Football Bowl Game, The Battle of the Border All Star Baseball and Softball Show-

case, three youth basketball tournaments, The La-dies Sports Summit, The Winter Training Baseball Academy, an Arm Care Clinic for baseball players and my pride and joy, The Greater Charlotte Hot Stove League Dinner. I have had some wonderful partners with all these events and my thanks go out to each of them as well.

None of these things would have been possible without your support. It’s especially important to note that without all the important members of our Family of Advertisers, we may not have made it past three or four issues. Please give every adver-tiser you see in The South Charlotte Sports Report the opportunity to earn your business.

I am very proud of the direction the paper has taken. We have maintained our original commit-ment to print positive news that is suitable for every member of the South Charlotte family. We have done our best to only publish stories on stu-dent-athletes that are committed on the field of play and more importantly in the classroom. Our philosophy has been from day one, if someone can’t work hard in the classroom, then our paper isn’t the place to highlight their efforts. We believe very strongly in the concept of student first, athlete second.

I have also enjoyed taking on the role as an ad-

vocate for saving middle school sports in the Char-lotte Mecklenburg School system. At the very first hint of middle school sports being eliminated, I went to work to offer solutions. It was very exciting to see two of my original ideas; a $1.00 surcharge on high school admission and the athletic partici-pation fee finally be accepted by the CMS School Board. It’s very exciting to know that come Sep-tember, the middle schools will once again have athletic programs.

In closing, I can’t say it enough, thank you for all of your amazing support. Thank you to my wife Grace, and children Hannah, Will and Tyler for their help and support along the way. I prom-ise I will keep working hard to showcase many of the outstanding student-athletes and teams in the South Charlotte community. LOOKING PAST ISSUE 100... What does the future hold?

(An interview with Tripp Roakes, Publisher of The South Charlotte Sports Report) With 100 issues now on the resume, what’s next for the South Charlotte Sports Report? “My goal is to maintain the same commitment to the community and all of our area youth that we have shown during our first 100 issues. I will continue to provide coverage and publicity for as many of the amazing student-athletes as I can. Nothing makes me happier than hearing about how excited the children become when they see their name or photo inside The South Charlotte Sports Report.” What areas would you like to see grow in the future?“I would really like to be able to expand the newspaper by a few more pages. In order to do that, I need to add more advertisers into our fam-ily. Over the first 100 issues, I have refrained from going out in search of additional advertisers or cold-calling businesses. My concentration has been more in the area of building a quality publication and becoming an asset in the South Charlotte community. The South Charlotte Sports Report with 100 issues under its belt is a quality publication, we distrib-ute our newspapers into more than 165 neighborhoods and we have over 100 retail racks throughout the South Charlotte community. I am very proud of the growth of the paper and the number of issues we print every other week. Our advertising rates are extremely affordable and flexibility on advertising packages remains a commitment of The South Charlotte Sports Report. I would love to bring a few more companies into our fam-ily of advertisers, please give me a call at 704-906-5466 if you are inter-ested in marketing to the families of South Charlotte.” The youth sporting events have become a big part of the South Charlotte Sports Report, will that continue?“Certainly. It has become so much fun to offer all the different sports camps and events for the community. We are always on the lookout for new partnerships or ideas to add more youth sporting events. These events have become true family affairs for The Roakes Family. At the Battle of the Border, The Greater Charlotte Hot Stove League Dinner, our Pop Warner Bowl Games or any of our basketball tournaments or other events, my entire family comes to work and we love to spend time meet-ing new friends and visiting with old friends. All of us look forward to the South Charlotte Sports Report events.” “We are always open to ideas from others in the community about adding new events. Many of our events we currently hold are done so in part-nership with other folks. One thing I have always been willing to do was listen to ideas and see what kind of partnerships could be formed. If any of our readers have an idea, I encourage them to give me a call at 704-906-5466.” Talk about South Charlotte Sports Report Action Photography and the plans for the future?“The photography business is a prime example of someone coming to me with an idea. The company has now grown to where we handle all pho-tography needs for 6 different athletic associations and a couple of schools and church athletic programs. We offer the best benefits package around to area associations and schools when they contract with us to shoot the team, individual and action photographs. We also provide photography for school proms and formals as well as our very popular Senior Portrait business. I would love the opportunity to speak with more schools and athletic associations about how we can work together in the future and continue to help promote the growth of youth sports in South Charlotte. I would be remiss if I didn’t provide a huge level of thanks to my partner on the photography company, Greg Arthur and my other chief photographer, Gerry Wall. Both of these folks are amazing photographers and they love being out in the community.” Any closing message as you begin to work towards issue 200?“I just want to take the time to once again thank my incredible advertis-ers and everyone of the 50,000 plus readers of the South Charlotte Sports Report. It has been an amazing four plus years and I am looking forward to what the future may bring.”

Seventeen year old Mere-dith Brami secured her college

future last week by accept-ing an offer to play softball for Peace College in Raleigh. The daughter of Chris and Susan Brami has played her way to the top of the lo-cal high school talent charts while playing for Providence High School. Her ability to play multiple positions (1B, 2B, 3B and OF) has been a key component to helping her school and showcase teams win many games over the last three years.

The decision to choose Peace was well thought out.

“I was also interested in Meredith College and Guil-ford College. I will be the third generation in my family to go to Peace, which is one of

the reasons I chose it. Another

contributing factor was Coach Charlie Dobbins. He has a great reputation and is one of the best coaches. I really like him and know I’ll enjoy play-ing for him. I feel like playing at Peace will give me the “best of both worlds” because I can play ball and still have the full college experience.”

“It was my goal to know where I was going by the start of school so I would have a stress free senior year.”

Now Meredith will focus on a fun and exciting senior season. Her softball career at Providence has been noth-ing short of spectacular. She has started every varsity game in her three years as a Pan-ther. Meredith has earned All Conference, All District and

All State honors as well. She was also a key part of the gold medal winning State Games team this past summer. She has spent time playing for the Lady Blues 18U Elite team which allowed her to play against the best players in the country.

Meredith has also paid close attention to her class-room work and has taken a challenging load of honors and AP courses. She is a member of the schools leadership team and has been a member of the Latin Club for three years.

Meredith also has a lot of folks she would like to thank for their help along the way.

“I want to thank Ricky Broome (former coach) for getting my travel softball ca-

reer started. Rodney Threatt (Lady Blues manager) for inviting me to be apart of the Lady Blues and helping me to the next level. Moni Arm-endarez (Lady Blues coach) for making me a better player and helping me continue my softball career. And my Mom and Dad for paying for ev-erything and driving me to all of my tournaments. I also want to thank Coach Dobbins for wanting me to come to Peace!”

The South Charlotte Sports Report salutes Meredith Bra-mi for her hard work on and off the softball field. By com-mitting the needed effort, Meredith was able to reach her goal of playing college softball!

SOUTH CHARLOTTE SPORTS REPORTSUPER SEVEN FOOTBALL POLL

August 25, 2010 1. Butler The defending state champions will overcome the drama of the offseason and get down to playing solid football once again. The core of the football team remains intact and will work towards one common goal, a second state championship.

2. Charlotte Latin The defending Private School State Champions have talent in many key positions. The offense will be as exciting as ever. Defense should provide solid play, allowing the offense to take lots of chances.

3. Charlotte Catholic A whole set of new names will lead an improved Cougars team this season. As they have done for decades, Catholic will run, run and run again on their way to many touchdowns.

4. Marvin Ridge Coach Chadwick has built a nice program in Mavericks Country. Don’t be surprised to see Marvin Ridge advance 3-4 rounds into the state playoffs this year.

5. Providence The Panthers may have lost a batch of Division 1 football players, but they return a solid core of hard working football players. Should contend for second place in Southwestern 4A Conference.

6. Charlotte Country Day The Buccaneers have improved over the last couple of seasons. If they can take care of business in the rivalry games, the team will be well prepared for the state playoffs.

7. Weddington Coach Hardin will continue to find success now that the Warriors enter their second year of 3A play. After watching two new schools pull players from Weddington in the last 3 years, things will begin to settle down.

What are “study skills,” and what is a study skills program?

The term study skills usually refer to a variety

of skills, habits, attitudes, and behaviors that can help you to be a good student and lifelong learner. A study skills program is designed to help you learn about and improve some of your own study skills.

Successful and effective students are able to man-age the demands of their academic environment. They have developed critical academic skills and can manage their behavior in order to know more

(acquire information), think better (make connec-tions and learn concepts), and work efficiently (meet expectations and do well on assignments, tests and projects).

Our study skills program will include the fol-lowing areas: Self-assessment, Organization, Time Management, Reading Strategies, Note-taking, Memorization and Study Techniques, Test-taking

and Research. At NewPoint Learning

Center, the topics addressed in a study skills program will depend on the student(s) en-rolled. A study skills course with a small group of students may address most or all of the topics listed above. In a one-to-one study skills program, in which an individual student works with an instructor, they may decide together to focus on certain skills and not oth-ers. In most cases the process begins with some checklists and simple assessment tools that can help identify individ-ual strengths and weaknesses.

Another benefit of New-Point Learning Center is our Homework Help tables. This service will support students completing assignments while utilizing the study skills pro-gram. Parents will no longer feel the burden of assisting their child on a daily basis with their homework. Please call NewPoint Learning Cen-ter for further information.

NEWPOINT LEARNING CENTER OFFERS NEW STUDY SKILLS CURRICULUM

With one final season of high school soccer re-maining, Giussi Gentile plans on making it his best ever before heading off to play soccer at UNC Charlotte. The 17 year old Ardrey Kell High School student has lived quite an interesting life across the world.

Giussi lived fifteen years of his life in Spain with the exception of 5th grade in Miami, Fl, where he was also born. He moved to Charlotte two years

ago and became an instant force on the soccer field while adjusting to the language and ways of Char-lotte.

“After moving here in the middle of high school, I had to adjust from school in German to English, but my Mom is American so she always spoke to me in English. I think I’ve adjusted pretty well now in school and my current grade point average is a 3.7.”

The adjustment came even faster on the soccer field. In a sport that is universally recognized Ar-drey Kell Head Coach Jeff Mercado let Giussi’s skill level take over. Last fall, while playing forward he led Ardrey Kell in scoring with 26 goals and was named All Conference, All Region, All State and All South/East in addition to being named the South-western 4A Conference Player of the Year and the 4A Region Player of the Year.

Those awards were simply a continuation of a career of success on the soccer field. Giussi has played for Team Lichtenstein in Europe and he is a member of the United States Soccer Development Academy.

His talent attracted the attention of the nation-

ally ranked UNC Charlotte soccer program and Gi-ussi elected to accept a scholarship offer to play for the Forty Niners. He will join his Ardrey Kell team-mate Nick Barnhorst and South Meck player Jake Keating on campus.

With his college soccer future now intact, Giussi can enjoy his senior season with The Knights.

“My goal is that we all have fun and that my teammates and I have a good season and possibly win the State Championship.”

The State Championship is certainly in reach for Giussi and all of his talented teammates.

It’s important to note that not only does Giussi succeed on the field, he has built a very impres-sive resume off the field as well. He speaks Ger-man, English, Spanish, Italian and English. He also served as an Alter Boy in his church in Europe for many years.

Giussi Gentile is off and running in his senior season and it’s sure to be a good one. The South Charlotte Sports Report salutes Giussi for his quick adaption to the Charlotte area and his commitment to success.

How and when did you get started with swimming?“I started swimming a year before I moved here, I was 10. My mom finally convinced me, she’d wanted me to do swimming for a long time and I finally agreed. I’ve been swimming ever since and I love it.”

What do you like most about swimming and being on a swim team?“Well, I just love the sport. I love swimming…it clears my mind. My year-round team is really close and we’re all really good friends. And just the adrenaline at races and winning a race.”

What is your favorite swimming event?“The 100yd backstroke, definitely. Backstroke is my favorite stroke and then I like the 100yd distance because it’s like a sprint- all out, all four laps.”

What is your favorite memory from swim-ming?“Just every meet, as a team, especially the relays, and the huge championships where the whole east coast comes. So, relays and being with the team are good memories. And at practice we keep each other going and our coach, Doug Fleck, keeps the humor going.”

What advice would you have for someone who wants to get started with swimming?“Well, if you haven’t had experience swimming, you need to start smaller and build up. If you’re older, you just probably want to start out smaller

and then you can try out for a team. It’s kind of hard to jump right in if you’re not as experienced because so many people have been swimming their whole lives. And if you’re younger you can just sign up for a team like Team Charlotte, MAC, NSS, ATOM, or the Y, depending on how competitive you want to be.”

What are your goals for swim season this winter?“Definitely drop time, that’s always a goal. For school, I made States last year in the 100yd back-stroke, but I want to be Top 10 this year. Club [her Team Charlotte year-round team] is a little harder because there’s so many different meets, but I defi-nitely want to drop time.”

What are your personal bests in your events and how are you looking to improve upon these times?“My best for the 100yd backstroke is 1:03.32 and my best for the 200yd backstroke is 2:18.94. Defi-nitely just working hard in practice is the only way to drop time. If you work hard, you’ll improve.”

LOCAL GROUP HELPING TO EXPAND SPECIAL

OLYMPICS TENNIS PROGRAM

Dori Cazorla is a tennis enthusiast with a daughter with special needs. She had a strong desire to share her sport with her daughter and other special needs children in the area. With her goal in tact, she went to work with the help of some other tennis friends. After reading an article in a local tennis magazine about a group in Atlanta that trains special athletes, she decided to contact Special Olympics. Dori asked Special Olympics to expand their existing program into South Charlotte,

Dori was met with a positive answer and she went to work to expand the program. There are now close to 50 athletes that participate in Spe-cial Olympics Tennis in Mecklenburg County.

“I hope to give some of these athletes another day of training as well as attract new athletes in South Charlotte and surrounding areas to the program,” said Dori.

“The goal is simple, provide a meaningful tennis experience to chil-dren and adults with intellectual disabilities. We will provide instruction from the most basic skills to match level play.”

Volunteers and parents with athletes that would like to participate are asked to contact Dori Cazorla at [email protected] for in-formation.

SOUTH CHARLOTTE AREA PLAYERS ACHIEVE BASEBALL SUCCESS

Twelve South Charlotte area baseball players have earned spots on Team Mid

Atlantic that will compete in the National Team Identification Series for USA Baseball. The group went through a tryout process to earn positions on the team. The Mid Atlantic NTIS program consisted of two stages. The first stage was a pro style workout and evaluation. Stage two consisted of two days of games and game situations. Over 350 kids in five states went through the process. From there three teams were formed each having an 18 man roster; a 13u team, a 15u team and a 17u team. A total of 54 players from five states were selected.

The South Charlotte area players include; (13U team) Marcus Chan, Drew Swoope, Nick Bruno; (15U team) Daniel Calabretta, Sean Collins, Logan Scherer, and David Marvin; 17U team) Craig Missigman, Logan Koch, Hayden Flores, Co-lin Manning and Chris McCue.

The teams will now travel to Cary, NC to compete against 11 other regions in the National tournament, known as the NTIS (National Team Identification Se-ries) for USA Baseball. There they will all go through another pro style workout for the USA Baseball Evaluation team. They will then play games against the other regions. During the entire event, the players will be evaluated by USA Base-ball for the opportunity to earn an invitation to the USA National Team Trials next year. At the National Team Trials they will get the opportunity to make the 14u, 16u and 18u National team.

Good luck to all these young baseball players.

BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE TO SPONSOR 5k ROAD RACE TO BENEFIT CHARLOTTE -AREA MIDDLE SCHOOL ATHLETICS

SOUTH CHARLOTTE SPORTS REPORT

Last year, Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools came very close to eliminating the middle school sports program. A plan offered by The South Charlotte Sports Report to charge an athletic participation fee and add a $1.00 surcharge to all high school athletic event tickets served as the catalyst to keep the program in tact. In addition to these fees, CMS will need to generate more funds to completely close the funding gap. An area college sports con-ference is stepping up to help raise additional funds for middle school sports.

The Big South Conference announced it is spon-soring a 5K Road Race as a way to give back to the local community and serve as a fundraising oppor-tunity for middle school athletic programs in the Charlotte area. The inaugural race is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 23 at 8:00am at the Blakeney Shop-ping Center in South Charlotte.

The Big South 5K Road Race will serve as a fundraiser for middle school athletic programs in Mecklenburg and Union Counties . During the reg-istration process, participants will have the option of selecting a “middle school affiliation,” and when a middle school is selected, a percentage of the par-ticipant’s registration fee will be sent to the selected middle school’s athletic booster club. Additional proceeds will create a new scholarship opportunity for Big South Conference student-athletes at mem-ber institutions in North Carolina , South Carolina and Virginia .

To register, visit www.BigSouthSports.com or www.RacesOnline.com. The entry fee is $20 for pre-registered runners by Oct. 15 and includes an official race t-shirt, and $25 after Oct. 15. Runners can also sign up on race day starting at 7:00am. The Big South 5K Road Race will feature a finish

line party of awards, music, food, games, vendors and giveaways, and will also jump start the 4th an-nual Blakeney Boo Bash.

“The Big South Conference is proud to sponsor a community event that not only promotes a healthy lifestyle, but also creates fundraising opportunity for local middle school athletic programs,” said Big South Conference Director of Marketing Chad Cook, who created and developed the event. “Dur-ing these tough times of budget cuts and reduced funding, many middle schools have been forced to become self sufficient and implement a ‘pay to play’ program. Our goal with the Big South 5K is to pro-vide a fun opportunity for the community to help these middle school booster clubs raise funds.”

For complete race information, visit the official race website at www.bigsouth5k.racesonline.com, or call 704-341-7990.

Seventeen year old Jake Keating has built quite an impressive soccer re-sume for his youth career. The South Mecklenburg High School senior is the son of Larry and Holly Keating and he plays the midfield and defender for the Sabres. Following his 2011 graduation, Jake will move on to play soccer for the nationally ranked UNC Charlotte soc-cer team. Let’s go inside the numbers with Jake Keating. As you enter into your senior year and look back on the past, what are some of the top memories that stand out for you? “As far as high school one of the top memories is Coach Jim Lynch giving me the chance to start on the varsity as a freshman. South Meck has been in the state playoffs every year and Coach Lynch’s dedication to the school

and team is one of the main reasons. As far as Club ball goes being in three straight NC State Final fours and winning the U-16 Atlantic Division of the US Academy league in 2009 would also be highlights, but the real fun as been the relationships and competition with my teammates and the learning pro-cess you get from your coaches.” What would you consider as your top soccer accomplishments?“Accepting an offer to play at UNC- Charlotte-being one of the first 2011 field players from Charlotte to commit to a Division 1 school with the opportunity to play for Coach Jeremy Gunn and his staff. Playing on the North Carolina Olympic Development Program team from 2006-2008 and making the ODP Southeast Region pool and being honored as an All-conference and All-Re-gion player for South Meck High School.” Share with us your youth club soccer experience and where you started playing?“I started to play club ball with Matthews Soccer Club when I was 8. My first Coach, Bob Searles, taught me alot about soccer fundamentals but he also taught me that soccer had to be fun as well at any level or you could burn out. Others coaches such as Kevin Foster, Ben Parry and Dino Pacifci each had their own special perspective that help build my game Another key turning point for me was to be coached by Jeremy Gunn in the Region III league and then play for him in the newly formed US Soccer Acdemy league. Next year I will play for the U 18 Academy teamed coached by Richard Butler.” At what point in life, did you really begin to play serious soccer in-stead of just rec league play? “My transition at the age of eight from rec to club made me realize that each level of the sport would bring bigger expectations for performance. I also

realized at that point that while I had an advantage in being leftfooted, I needed to develop an equally strong right foot to develop into the player that I wanted to be. I asked my parents for a soccer rebounder that Christmas and would work on it a hour a day to develop both legs. I also came to understand that the older you got the more physical the game became.” What is your goal this season at South Meck? “We are in one of the toughest 4A conferences in the state . Our goal is to win our conference and compete for a state championship. We have talent and strong coaching but you sometimes need good fortune as well. We are off to a good start but will need to stay focussed based on the stiff competition.” What led you to choose UNCC for your college soccer? “The leadership of Jeremy Gunn and his excellent coaching staff was the overwhelming factor. They are winners and you can’t help wanting to be part of their future success. I also am hoping that success there could lead me to my dream of playing soccer professionally after college. While winning is the bottom line I also feel that being part of that program will help me develop as a person. Since I want to study Business/Marketing going to the Belk School of Business is a huge plus. Lastly UNC- Charlotte is a school on the move and it will be really cool to see the Football program launch while I am there. Also Coach Gunn’s non-conference schedule always includes ACC teams that have been in the NCAA final four each year. To be the best you have to play the best.” What other schools did you choose UNCC over? “I committed so early in the process (December of my junior year) that I was in the early stages of the recruiting process with other schools. Division 1 schools that had expressed strong interest or offers included Clemson, UNC-Wilmington. App State and James Madison.” What would you like to major in at UNCC?“I plan to study business with a major in Marketing or Finance. Going to the Belk School of Business and having the influence of a city like Charlotte is a huge plus.” How do you perform in school? “I currently have a 3.5 GPA and am in the National Technical Honor Society. I enjoy being in all kinds of events at South Meck especially sporting events. It’s great to be a South Meck Sabre!” What type of things do you enjoy doing away from soccer? “I really enjoy hanging out with my friends and have a big interest in cars. One of my favorite recent activities was participating in the Deserving Soles charity that cleans and packages used shoes to send to Third World coun-tries. Recently we were able to send over 3,000 pairs of shoes to the victims in Haiti with the help of St Matthews Cahtolic Church. As you run in your own shoes it gives you some perspective about others. Also, each year I have worked at the Quail Hollow championships to help raise money for South Meck’s athletic programs.”

BEYOND THE GAME WITH DREW WALSHBy Shauna Rust, Myers Park High School

Drew Walsh, an outstand-ing varsity soccer player at Ardrey Kell High School , has faced a year full of adversity, dislocating his knee before the season even began last fall. Drew, who played soc-cer at Ardrey Kell during his freshman year, was forced to sit out the soccer season last year and underwent surgery and a long road to recovery. Now beginning his junior year, Drew has made his return to the soccer team and hopes to help his team to a Southwestern 4A Conference title this season. With high endurance and hard work, Drew excels in his position at

left forward. Drew, the son of Brian and Gloria Walsh, is a dedicated athlete who also main-tains a spot on the A/B Honor Roll at Ardrey Kell.

How old were you when you started playing soccer and how did you get involved with it?“I was three when I started playing. Soccer has been the only sport that I’ve ever played. I mean, everyone plays soccer as a kid, you know. When I was eight, I started playing Chal-lenge, I guess that was the next level, and then I just moved up from there.”

What do you like most about soccer?“I like that it’s constant and you keep on going. It’s such an endurance sport, but also a skill sport. When you get on a team, a lot of the kids are really close-knit and you become good friends, but there are some feuds.”

What has been one memorable game for you during your high school career so far?“Two years ago, my freshman year, in high school ball against Weddington, I played really well and then next game I got to start against Butler . I always told kids how I wanted to start at least one game.”

What advice would you give to someone who wants to start playing soccer?“It’s mostly about effort and work ethic, just keep with it. It’s not always about looking the best, but playing as hard as you can.”

What are the keys to being a successful soccer player? “Always playing, constantly playing, even when there’s an off-season, always being on some kind of team.”

With Ardrey Kell earning a 2nd place finish in the conference last year and for you coming back after knee surgery, what goals do you and the team have for the season this fall?“Well for me, I didn’t get to play last year, so getting to play every game, not having to sit out because I’m hurt. And for our team, my freshman year we were 3rd in the conference, and last year we were 2nd, so hopefully the third time’s a charm.”

Which teams will be your toughest opponents this fall and what skills has your team been working on in order to beat them?“Well, Myers Park is always a tough opponent, and I guess South Meck …they have Jake Ke-ating. We’re trying to keep the ball in the pitch and trying to keep it down.”

Is there anyone who has helped you to become the athlete you are today?“One of my coaches for a while, Dino Pacifici, he’s always been one of my coaches and close people that I go to for advice for soccer and he still helps out with North Meck [North Meck Soccer Club], even after I moved clubs.”

How has your knee injury last season impacted your soccer training?“Well, I had the surgery September 30th, 2009, and when the injury was really serious it was right during tryouts last year, when my knee dislocated. So, I had to do a lot of rehab and get back into it, it was hard to even run a mile. I still have to do rehab for a lot of stuff because my leg is so weak from the muscle atrophy. I’ve spent a lot of time in the training room and taking ice baths.”

CHARLOTTE CATHOLIC 40 SOUTH MECKLENBURG 25

The names on Charlotte Catholic football roster may change every year, but the one constant; running the football never seems to change. Legendary head coach Jim Oddo and his Cougars ran the ball for 363 yards in the season opening victory over South Mecklenburg. A strong turnout of Friday night football fans turned out to watch the opening game at South Mecklenburg High School on a beautiful late summer evening.

The Cougars moved the scoreboard first with a Steven Bevilacqua 4 yard touch-down on the first drive of the game. The visitors added to the lead when Alex Sa-bates ran the pigskin for an 11 yard touchdown and a 14-0 lead.

The Sabres were set back on their heels a tad, but sophomore quarterback Chase Ferguson led the team down the field before hitting one of his favorite targets, De-mario Johnson for 5 yard touchdown early in the second quarter. The spirits were raised on the Sabres side of the field with the score now at 14-7.

Steven Bevilacqua decided the celebration needed a quick ending and he ran the ball 66 yards all the way to the Cougars end zone. Steven ran for a total of 153 yards in his first starring role for the Cougars.

Two more touchdowns by Nick Johnson and C.J. Brodowicz helped the Cougars to total 40 points in the season opener.

Chase Ferguson did show a ton of promise throughout the game by passing for 246 yards and three touchdowns. As he grows older, expect to see his name listed among the top players in the area. His favorite receiver Demario Johnson closed

the night with 150 yards receiving.

Gridiron Thoughts:

Charlotte Catholic looks to be improved over 2009. The rival games will be tough and the game with Olympic will likely decide the conference championship.Nick Johnson reminds me of some of the smaller Catholic runners of years past. He is ultra quick and very dependable. The Sabres are going to cause some headaches in the tough Southwestern 4A Conference. The passing game is much improved this season.I cringe every time I see a team from South Charlotte head 40 miles away to play a team in North Charlotte that provides very little excitement. With so many natural rivalries available there is no need to travel 40 miles away. Kudos to South Meck and Charlotte Catholic for playing locally in a game that folks want to see.

BEYOND THE GAME WITH DANIEL POFFENBARGER

Written by Shauna Rust, Myers Park High School

Daniel Poffenbarger, a junior at Charlotte Catholic High School, is an exceptional de-fensive player on the Catholic Varsity soc-cer team. The son of Bob and Nancy Pof-fenbarger, has been playing soccer since he was four years old and he continues to love the game. Daniel’s size and speed have helped him to become a powerful defensive player on the Catholic team. This fall, Daniel is not only looking to help his team to another Conference title, but also to help the Catholic team win a state championship.

How old were you when you started playing soccer and how did you get involved with it?“I was about four years old and I actually played with my whole family and my dad was our coach, we were in a little Muppets league, so that’s how I got started.”

What do you like most about soccer?“It’s just really fun playing with all of my friends, I’m friends with pretty much everyone on the team.”

What has been one standout soccer game that you’ll al-ways remember?“It was in a game with my U-13 or U-12 SCSA club team. We were in the semifinals at States and it went into overtime and we ended up losing but it was such a memorable game.”

What advice would you give to someone who wants to take up soccer or improve their soccer skills?“Really just try your best and go up by skill level and you’ll get where you need to be. Keep practicing and stay motivated.”

What are the keys to being a successful soccer player? “Well, motivation, heart, and really trying your best. And on defense, size, and being smart, being able to make a good choice- should I go to the ball or not?”

With Catholic earning the conference title and advancing to the quarterfinals in the state playoffs last season, what goals do you and the team have for this season?“Doing the best we can and becoming state champs. Trying to learn from how we lost, trying to be the best, and not being cocky- we were really cocky last year.”

Which teams will be your toughest opponents this fall and what are you and the Catholic team working on in order to beat them?“Well, we play South Meck, and we’re trying to schedule a game with Myers Park, and then Marvin Ridge in the playoffs. And we’re working on getting our minds set and being prepared.”

Who is someone who has inspired you to become the ath-lete you are today?“Matt Pacifici [Charlotte Catholic goalie], he’s a really great player and he just really helps everyone out. He’s the goalie so he’s the big man out on the field and in charge.”

REMEMBER THIS?

This photo appeared on the cover of our very first issue on June 5, 2007. It was taken on the Ardrey Kell High School football field and included many of our friends. We asked all the kids to wear the uniforms of their favorite sport to help us kick off our first issue. It’s amazing to see how much these kids have grown up, one of them is now in college and a 3 or 4 are starting their senior year of high school this week. My children were 13, 10 and 3 at the time of this photo.
