He was elected to the All-Star team for the American League in 1991 and for the National League in 1993. He led the American League in saves in 1991 with 46. Harvey was named Rookie Pitcher of the Year by The Sporting News. Providence High School Class of 2007 graduate David Mailman will also be honored. Mailman was a 7th round draft pick of the Boston Red Sox and has what many scouts have described as a “picture perfect swing.” He has become one of the Red Sox top- rated prospects and is expected to one day take to the field at Fenway Park. In addition to the speech by Harvey, guests will be treated to a social hour and autograph ses- sion with 10-20 current or former major and minor league baseball players, a sit down dinner, ven- dor displays and one of the larg- est silent auction of sports mem- orabilia in the area. The evening will also include the presenta- tion of awards to the top youth baseball and softball players in the area. WEDDINGTON VOLLEYBALL CAPTURES CONFERENCE TITLE,

AIMS FOR STATE TITLE

With a lot of hard work, Weddington High School Volleyball Coach Carrie Powell has built an incredible program. The Warriors just cap-tured the conference title and are now on the prowl for a State Title. The team is well balanced with freshman, sophomores, juniors and seniors.

Coach Powell is proud of the efforts of the team.

“This has been an awesome season so far. The senior captains have created an atmosphere that is fun to play in but competitive. Our defense is tough and that helps the offense get going. Great passes lead to great sets and great hits. Hope-fully, we can keep taking one game at a time and keep going in the state tournament.”

Good Luck to the Warriors in their quest for a Championship!

SOUTH CHARLOTTE SPORTS REPORT HOSTING PRESEASON BASKETBALL CAMP NOVEMBER 7TH AND 8TH

Tip-off to the 2008-2009 basketball season is just around the corner and the time is now for area boys and girls to tune up on their basketball skills.

The South Charlotte Sports Report Preseason Youth Basketball Camp will be held at St. Matthew Catholic Church Gym on Friday November 7th from 6:30pm-9:00pm and on Saturday November 8th from 9:00am-12:00pm. The camp is open to boys and girls between the ages of 5-14.

The two day camp will focus on preparing each player for the basketball season with a focus on developing their offensive skills. Our philosophy is to teach each child how to take their given skill set and raise their talent level to the point of complete enjoyment of the game of basketball. We want each child to find success on the court and continue to grow with the game. Basketball is a wonderful sport, especially when a child can find success in the game.

Coach Tripp Roakes and his basketball staff will lead the camp and deliver the same level of first class community service you have come to expect from The South Charlotte Sports Report. In addition to the basketball skills being taught, we will once again place a strong focus on Good Sportsmanship on and off the basketball court.

Cost for the two session camp is only $50.00 per child or $90.00 for two children. Each camper will receive a Basketball Camp T-shirt! To register, please visit www.southcharlottesports.com or email [email protected]. Payment may be made with Visa, MasterCard, American Express or by mailing a check to South Charlotte Sports, 9901 Zackery Ave, Charlotte, NC 28277.

The last article we looked at assessing upper back strength to keep a balanced shoulder and preventing shoulder pain. This article, the fifth in a five part series will examine how to modify your upper body program to avoid shoulder pain.

If you have trouble with any of previous 5 tests you may need to modify your upper body strengthening routine. Here are three suggestions:

1. 3:1 Pull/Push ratioBecause our upper back muscles tend to be weaker than our chest muscles we need to target this area more during our workouts. To do this, you should have a 3:1 pull/push ratio. Simply put, you need to do 3 times as many upper back exercises as chest exercises. For example: If you perform 3-4 sets of bench press then you would need to perform 9-12 sets of upper back exercises. Upper back exercises would include the Y, T, Bent T, one arm row with elbow away from the side, pull down in front, etc.

2. Work chest for endurance along with trunk stabilityWork your chest muscles for endurance with some bodyweight exercises. These exercises will also develop some additional core stability if performed with the back in a neutral position (not arched or rounded). Try these three exercises for one minute each with your goal to work up to two minutes

Figures A and B – Start at the top of push-up position. While maintaining one arm on the ground, lift one arm and rotate your body so that your chest is square with the closest wall. Return to the start position and rotate the opposite direction. Repeat for one minute.

Figures C,D,and E – “V-push-up”. Again start in the top of a push-up position. Push back to drop your head between your shoulders and form an “inverted V” position. Try to get your heels on the ground but do not move the position of your hands. Hold for 5 count and return to the start position. Repeat for 1 minute.

Figure F - Push up on a gymnic ball. Perform standard pushups on the ball. 3 sets of 10 – work up to 3 sets of 30.

3. Incorporate flexibility into your routines. Make sure you stretch your shoulders daily and especially after your upper body workouts.Remember it is your posture during the day combined with your upper body strengthening routine that can cause come tightness in your shoulder. Hold your stretches for slightly longer

(30 seconds) if you are trying to increase flexibility.

Holy Trinity Catholic Mid-dle School football player Mark Pollack cherishes the opportu-nity to play the game of foot-ball. For Mark, nothing beats the opportunity to wear his # 7 jersey and represent his school on the football field. The com-petition Mark finds every week with middle schools like Mon-roe, Weddington and Marvin Ridge is such a thrill.

Last April, Mark came very close to losing the opportunity to play football this season for the Holy Trinity Bulldogs. The

13 year old son of Mark and Angie Pollack describes a few tense moments from his hospi-tal stay.

“I was injured severely back in April in a basketball game. I made a layup and the next thing I remember is an ambulance ride to the hospital. My rehab began the moment I left the hospital. When I was able to walk again I began working on my basketball shot. The Neu-rologist cleared me to resume contact sports in late May and I went to a few basketball camps and played Babe Ruth Baseball. I got back on the court and our travel basketball team won the state championship of the 14 and under division.”

Despite the return to bas-ketball and baseball, Mark was still not 100% on the strength meter.

“I worked very hard to get my conditioning, strength and speed to where it was prior to the injury. I was given an op-portunity to use the Catholic weight room with my team-mates and that has really helped. I also rehabbed at the Athletic Republic of Charlotte.

Through all that I feel as though I am now 100% but am always looking to get better.”

Mark is still searching for lessons to learn from the injury as it came from no fault of his own.

“I didn’t really learn any-thing about the injury other than never take anything for granted and enjoy the oppor-tunity to compete. I am very lucky that I can still play the games that I love; football, bas-ketball and baseball.”

As Mark runs further away from the injury, he talks about this season on the gridiron.

“This fall I am playing tight end and defensive end. I love to block and tackle and these two positions give me an op-portunity to do that on every play. The tight end position is a challenge because my assign-ment is different on just about every play.”

The tall receiver is also hop-ing to have a few favors re-turned to him on the football field this fall.

“The new quarterback, Ed-die Hanlon and I have been teammates since 3rd grade so

that helps. When I was the quarterback I completed quite a few passes to Eddie, hopefully he will return the favor.”

Mark will move directly from the football field to the basket-ball court at the end of the sea-son. He always uses football to pre-pare him for the roundball season.

“ Y o u s t a r t the bas-k e t b a l l s e a s o n a l r e a d y in shape f r o m p l a y i n g footbal l . I play for-ward or center in b a s k e t -ball so the c o n t a c t you get in the low post is similar to what hap-

pens at the line of scrimmage in football.”

Away from the field of play, Mark is an Honor Roll student at Holy Trinity Catholic Middle School and his favorite subject is Math.

MIKE GARDINERPITCHING INSTRUCTOR

Mike grew up in Canada, where he played both hockey and baseball. He came to the United States in 1983 when he was recruited by Indiana State University. Mike was a pitcher at ISU and led the team to its first and only College World Series. He still holds the all-time record for career wins and has been inducted into the Indiana State University Hall of Fame. Mike also played for Team Canada and went to the 1984 Olympics, where he was the winning pitcher against the eventual gold medal Japanese team. After college, Mike was drafted by the Seattle Mariners. He played professionally for 12 years, over 4 of those years in the major leagues, with the Seattle Mariners, Boston Red Sox, Montreal Expos, and Detroit Tigers.

Mike is one of the lead pitching instructors at Carolinas Baseball Center. Many of the top young pitchers in South Charlotte rely on Mike’s expertise to help them become better pitchers. Mike takes a low-key ap-proach to working with pitchers and his number one rule-of-thumb is proper balance for each pitcher.

“Once you have balance, you have a chance to be a good pitcher. From that point, we develop a good frame of mind for each pitcher. When you are confident, you are going to perform on a higher level.”

Mike also works to enhance the given ability of each pitcher. “We try to enhance and tweak their skills, we make suggestions because in the end, I can’t go out there and

make the pitch for them. They have to take what they have been taught and apply it in the game.”Mike Gardiner is available for private and group pitching lessons. To schedule a lesson with Mike, contact

the Carolinas Baseball Center office at (704) 499-9040

CAROLINAS BASEBALL CENTERCarolinas Baseball Center provides the area youth

baseball player with facility, programs and instruction that compare to no other in The Greater Charlotte Area. CBC’s focus has been on the development of the youth baseball players. Over the past year and half CBC’s in-structors have developed drills, programs, camps, clinics and classes to enhance the performance of every player and team that comes into Carolinas Baseball Center.

INDIVIDUAL LESSONS: 1 on 1 instruction from former Major League Players, Minor League Play-ers, College Players and Coaches. The individual attention from instructors who have done it brings not only the fundamental/technical approach to all the skills being taught but the mental approach of the game.

RBI Lesson Plan: 2 players, 3 players and 4 players lesson plan will allow team members and individuals to come together in a group instruction setting. Many teams like to place their core players into this type of instruction CAMPS/CLINICS/CLASSES: Our camps are designed for different age group and skill levels. SUMMER BASEBALL CAMPS: (Ages 8-12) The summer camp programs are ALL SKILLS pro-grams designed for the younger players in the area Emphasis on the fundamentals of the game along with just having fun playing baseball ROOKIE CAMP: (Ages 4-7) Rookie Camps are de-signed for tee-ball and coach pitch players. This is Base-ball 101 teaching the future stars the basic fundamentals of throwing, hitting, fielding and running. This is a fun way for the kids to learn how the game is played. HIGH SCHOOL SKILLS CAMP: The 2009 High School Skills Camp is being held January 17th. College Coaches and Major League Scouts come to CBC and in-struct the players. Last year we had 25 college coaches and 5 major league scouts work this camp. The camp limits each class on that day to 50 players per graduat-ing class. This year the event will be open to High School Players graduating in 2010, 2011, 2012. HITTING BOOT CAMP: This is an intense 4 week/one hour camp that moves the hitters through stations. This program will begin in early January and expect to see special guest instructors working this camp. PITCHING CLASSES: (Ages 10-18) The four week

pitching class is designed for the age level the pitcher is competing at. Basic Classes for the younger players onto the advanced programs developed for the pitchers in high school who are preparing for the up coming season and college. COACHES CLINICS: CBC has held several free coaches clinics over the past year and a half. It is a way for us to connect with the coaches that sacrifice time and re-sources to provide a place for the kids to play. It is impor-

tant that we develop the players in the Greater Charlotte area and we want to pass on as much knowledge to the guys on the field with these boys as we can. We have had several former and current Major League Players speak at these clinics. Look for our next coaches clinic to held in January. CLASSES: CBC has developed position specific classes. These classes run for 4 weeks at one hour per class. Our classes are taught by instructors who played the specific position. Hitting, Pitching, Catching, Infield and Outfield classes run throughout the fall and winter months. Classes are limited to 6-10 players and fill up quickly. Check the CBC website at www.cbcbaseball.net for the fall/winter classes SPRING TRAINING: Starting early January CBC holds a Spring Training for the all the high school play-ers. This program preps all the players for upcoming high school tryouts and season. Spring Training is twice a week for 6 weeks.

FIELD RENTAL: Inside CBC is a full size infield. The field area in netted in from top to bottom. Teams have the opportunity to rent this space throughout the year. Sever-al organizations such as Stealth Baseball, The South Charlotte Panthers, Carolina Reds, 13U Express to name a few who have trained on the field area to better their organizations. This field area rental fills up quickly during the winter months. Early booking for the field area is encouraged.

BATTING CAGES: Custom designed cages with Iron Mike pitching machines. Each cage also has an L screen for the players who prefer to take live BP. The cages can be rented by the half hour or hour. The machines can be put on a timer or you can purchase tokens. The speeds range from 40-90mph.

PITCHING MOUNDS: A three (3) mound ballpen area separate from the rest of the facility allows pitchers to come in and work on their game. The mounds are available to rent for the half hour or hour.

MEMBERSHIPS: 3, 6, 12 month member-ships are available. The membership program al-lows the member to come in and use the facility when he chooses. This gives the player the free-dom to come and work on his game when time al-lows. This is a great bonding tool for father and

son, many of our members parents throw BP, hit fungos and catch bullpens.

CBC TEAMS: This past summer CBC put together its first team, The South Charlotte Cougars. We formed this 16U team and went and played in showcase events. Currently CBC has 3 teams (2012, 2011, 2010/09). The plans for the Spring/Summer of 2009 is to have teams from ages 11U-18U. Tryouts will be announced.

CBC has taken a dedicated approach to giving the youth baseball community a true baseball center run and instructed by full time baseball people. Our program goes beyond just teaching the basics of the game. CBC brings to the baseball community a level of instruction that teaches not just how to do it but what it takes mentally to succeed. Our dedication, facility and staff speaks for itself. We have been there and done it and now it is our turn to teach it.

HOME OF THE PROSDAVID MAILMAN

Providence High School Class of 2007 graduate David Mailman is busy at work this offseason at Carolinas Baseball Center. The 2007 seventh round draft pick of the Boston Red Sox is coming off a strong finish to his season with the Greenville Drive baseball team and is look-ing to continue his rise to Fenway Park. David’s swing has been de-scribed as “Picture perfect” by many scouts. He is a great athlete and possess a very strong arm.

David has chosen to train with Carolinas Baseball Center for the second consecutive offseason.

“Jeff Schaeffer runs a first class facility at CBC. His staff are all former big leaguers and know how the game is supposed to be played. They are all very knowledgeable and are always willing to assist anyone who wants to compete at the top level. I can’t thank Jeff and his staff enough for all they have done for me and I am looking forward to train-ing at one of the nicest facilities out there this offseason.

CHARLOTTE BLAZE BLACK 10UTURNS UP THE HEAT

The Charlotte Blaze Black 10U team is made up of a group of very talented young ladies that travel a long distance to play together and to compete at the highest level. The team entered the 2008 season as a first year 10U team and competed in 11 tournaments this Spring/Summer. The team improved with each outing and established themselves as one of the top 10U teams in North Carolina by winning the AAU “A” Spring Nationals, placing 2nd in the NSA “B” State Champion-ship, and by placing 5th in the NSA “B” World Series. Following the World Series four key players from the team moved up to play in the 12U division and the 10U team welcomed four new players to the Charlotte Blaze Black 10U for the 2008/2009 Fall, Spring, and Summer season.

The team worked very hard in August in preparation for an exciting and challenging 2008/2009 campaign and so far the results have been exceptional. The team entered and won the Top Gun Terrific Twelve tournament the weekend of September 6th with a 5-1 record. Two weeks later, the team took the field for their second tournament of the fall season and captured the Top Gun Fall State Championship with a 7-1 record.

The team has excelled in all facets of the game and has delivered outstanding results by le-veraging strong defense, timely hitting, and deep, strong pitching. Members of the 2008/2009 Charlotte Blaze Black 10U are as follows:

Front Row: Maggie Cotter, Sarah MartinRow 2: Morgan McCalla, Rachel Barber, Dharma Rosbrugh, Chelsea KriderRow 3: Emily Clinton, Chelsie Grazier, Carrie EberleBack Row: Head Coach Adam Martin, Assistant Coaches Chris Grazier, TJ Eberle, and James Hamby

The first annual South Charlotte Sports Report Basketball Boot Camp for sixth-ninth graders was held this past weekend at Com-munity House Middle School. The camp was designed to provide a boost to area students before they enter their school’s basketball tryout process. In addition to working on their basketball skills, the campers received first class instruction on physical condition-ing from Velocity Sports Performance as well as lectures from former pro basketball player Sean Kilmartin and his son Ryan, Sports Performance Coach Jeremy Boone and Peak Performance Specialist Erik Dunlap.

“After learning more about the turnout levels for some of the area schools, I wanted to develop a program that would help bas-ketball players prepare for both the mental and physical aspects of their tryout,” said Tripp Roakes. “Along with Mike Craft (Ardrey Kell Basketball Coach) and many other great coaches in the area, we put together this program and feel really good about the infor-mation we were able to share. Any sports tryout can be a scary situation, but our campers will enter their tryouts with an extra ounce of confidence following the camp.”

The Basketball Boot Camp is one of many youth sports pro-grams operated by Tripp Roakes and his South Charlotte Sports Report staff. Each camp is designed to improve the skills of local youth student-athletes while maintaining a focus on good sports-manship.

Local baseball fans will be able to drive up I-485 thirty minutes to follow the college career of Marvin Ridge High School infielder Shane Basen. The 17 year old son of Bruce and Debbie Basen made a ver-bal commitment to UNC Char-lotte head baseball coach Loren Hibbs last weekend. Shane will follow former South Charlotte

area baseball stars Andrew Smith (Butler) and Tyler Pilk-ington (Weddington) to the Forty Niners baseball program.

“The last couple of years I started to think about college and wanted to play at a school with challenging, reputable academics and a highly re-garded baseball program. UNC Charlotte fit all of these. They have one of the best baseball programs in the country and it is improving every year. After visiting and talking to coaches Hibbs, Hall and Durkac last Wednesday I was even more excited about their program.”

Shane also had offers from UNC Asheville and Wingate in hand at the time, with more ex-pected to come.

“I decided to go to UNCC because it’s far enough away from home that I can have a college life and close enough to see friends and family. Also, UNCC was very appealing be-cause they are very competi-tive every year and have great

new facilities, and the coaches were great. They have won 40+ games the last two seasons.”

With the commitment, Shane goes down in history as the first ever athlete to make a college commitment at Marvin Ridge High School!

Shane has built a reputation as a quality player across the area by traveling with the South Charlotte Panthers the last few seasons. The Panthers are one of the top showcase teams in the state.

“Playing with the South Charlotte Panthers has been a huge role in my development. Not only did Coach Hutchins talk to many coaches for me and to have them come out and see me play but he also helped me gain the confidence I needed to play at a higher level. Also, the South Charlotte Panthers allowed me to play teams of the highest caliber around the country and to play with some of the best players in this area. We not only play together but

have developed lasting friend-ships.”

With the commitment now in the rear view mirror, Shane has had some time to reflect on all the people that have helped him make it to this level.

“I would first like to thank my Mom, Dad and sister for coming to all my games and en-couraging me to keep practicing and working hard in everything from academics to athletics. Also, I would like to thank Coach Mennitt, Hammers, and DeMaine from Marvin Ridge for helping me improve my game so I could play at a Division 1 school. Also, Coach Mennitt helped big time in the recruiting process. Everything they did means so much to me, they saw me as a person rather than a baseball player and got to know me for who I really am. Also, my closest friends have supported me throughout the recruiting process and endless seasons of basketball and base-ball. I appreciate all that they

do for me daily.”In just three short months,

Shane will take the field for his final season of high school baseball. The Mavericks will be loaded with talent and Shane hopes to lead them deep into the state playoffs.

“As a team goal we plan to win conference and make a push for the state champion-ship. I believe with the team we have we should be one of the strongest teams in the state. The thing that helps us so much is that the coaches make it en-joyable to come and play every day and the players really enjoy playing together and are always there for each other.”

Congratulations to Shane Basen on his commitment to UNC Charlotte. The South Charlotte Sports Report wish-es him the best of luck this spring.

BEYOND THE GAME WITH JORDAN ALLEN

Jordan is a senior volleyball player at South Mecklenburg High School. She plays many different positions for head coach Leslie Berens. The daughter of Mike and Alison Allen, is an accomplished run-ner as well. She has competed in the state championships in cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track.

Tell me about the season for South Meck this year, how has it gone, what have you learned?

“The season started off a little slow because we did not have a coach. Coach Berens agreed to coach us and she has been great. The team was rebuilding after losing player of the year Jen Wiker from last year’s team. We have steadily im-proved, and played very hard all season long.” How long have you been playing Volleyball and what position do you play?“I have been playing volleyball

for six years. I have played Li-bero for my club team the past four years but I played outside hitter and right side for school this year. It has been fun playing on the front row some this year since I am usually a defensive player.”

“Although I have played for the club team every year, I have had an unusual school volleyball career. I made South’s volleyball team as a freshman and was the starting libero. We had a very strong team that season with mostly seniors except Jen Wiker and me. My sophomore and junior years, however, I decided to follow my love of running and ran on the cross country team instead of playing volleyball. Although I loved cross country and did well, I decided to re-turn to volleyball for my senior year.” What club team do you play for?“I have played for Carolina

Juniors Volleyball since the seventh grade. That has been a great experience and I recom-mend it to anyone who loves volleyball.”

“There were days last year when I would go to cross country practice at school until 5:00, then drive to club volleyball practice, and then get home around 9:30 to eat dinner and do homework. It has been a very hectic sched-ule.” What is your favorite volleyball memory?“My best memory is when my club team finished second in our region last year. My most vivid memory, however, is an accident in a club tourna-ment in Atlanta last Easter. I was going for a ball that had been shanked to the side, and while looking up for the ball I ran into the chairs for specta-tor seating. I was knocked out for a few seconds, and when I awoke I was being treated

for a deep cut on my forehead and a large knot on my leg. I was taken to the hospital for stitches, and I still don’t have feeling in parts of my forehead. My friends call me Harry Potter because of the scar on my forehead.”

What does it mean to you to be a good leader?“For me, being a good leader means being a good example for my teammates by working as hard as I can, pushing them to be the best players they can be, and being supportive of them. You have to be very positive in volleyball or else every mistake plays with your mind.” How well do you do in school and what are your college plans?“I am an A/B student and ranked in the top ten percent of my class. I am hoping to attend UNC Chapel Hill or NC State next year with a major in computer science.”

Sally my articulate, imaginative, interesting daughter - hated school! Every morning she feigned stomach or headaches. Kids were making fun of her be-cause of her learning difficulties. She loved books, but struggled to read. Home-work was exhausting – more time was spent on avoiding and whining than do-ing the work!

We tried the things suggested at school, by caring teachers, without success. Using my background in the neurological area, we began to work on cognition skills, the building blocks of learning. Finally, Sally began moving forward, but we needed a next step. After doing some research on various treatments and programs, we started LearningRx. Half-way through, I received notes from her teacher that she was paying attention better in class. Homework time was shorter and more cheerful. By the end of the program, Sally was independent with her homework, her reading had increased significantly, and she was read-ing for enjoyment for the first time. She continues to have above grade reading skills, and is much more confident. This research based and well constructed program has changed the quality of our family’s life.

In my 25 years of working with people who had brain injuries, developmen-tal problems, syndromes, and learning disabilities, I learned the brain is capable of significant change. I had never seen the amazing gains that Sally had made in such a short period of time. With outcomes like this I decided to buy the company. I am now doing what I have the background and passion to do- one person at a time. I hope you will take the opportunity to learn about the dramat-ic gains 20,000 students have made with LearningRx cognitive skills training. LearningRx specializes in identifying and correcting the underlying cognitive skill deficiencies that keep people from achieving their full potential in school, business or life.

Q: What is “Brain Training”? A: While there are many options for a struggling learner, only Brain Training or Cognitive skills training provides a dramatic, permanent change in the way he or she processes information. Everything we learn we process using our brain’s cognitive abilities like auditory and visual process-ing, memory, attention and reasoning. This is true whether you are a preschooler, a senior citizen or anywhere in between. Effective learning requires strong, active mental skills. Cognitive or “Brain” training making stronger skills possible. Brain training exercises the brain like a fitness coach works your muscles, and the results are similar—more strength to accomplish the task. Training will prepare pre-school children to learn to read and reason. Elementary, middle and high school students can be trained in skills that im-prove reading, planning, math computations, memory and attention. Better skills lead to better grades, improved self esteem and more opportu-nities.

“I’ve been very pleased with Paige’s progress. She now WANTS to read. Before, she read at a 3rd grade level and wouldn’t read unless I begged. Tonight she’s finishing The Hobbit! My only regret is we didn’t do brain training earlier. We thought Paige would improve on her own, but that didn’t happen. When Paige com-pleted the program, my husband (an accountant) was so pleased that he said it was worth every dollar! Recent Brain Training Graduate

MATTHEWS BASKETBALL UNDERWAY! MARA Basketball sign-ups in process

Matthews, September 29th - Basketball signups have been brisk for the 2008 - 2009 edition of MARA Basketball. With over 500 players last winter, the league has doubled in size in the last four years. MARA Basketball is becoming one of the dominant recreation leagues in the southern part of Charlotte. “Basketball interest has peaked over the several years with the ACC in our backyard as well as the emergence of the UNC Charlotte, Winthrop and Davidson basketball programs” mentioned Jeff White, MARA’s Basketball Commissioner. Last year MARA fielded over 60 teams. “We’re putting out a really good product inside what is already a strong athletic organization” White stated. MARA basketball has become a teaching and developmental league without losing it’s competitive spirit. “We’re very competitive, we have more practice time, more games, longer games as well as professional referees and great facilities. MARA also has an all-star program and holds a Southeast Charlotte All-Star Tournament (The SCAT) that attracted 24 teams last spring. ” We have gotten tremendous support from the Principals, Faculty and Athletic Directors at the schools we use. As busy as they are, they always find a way to partner with us and make sure they support their students and local association. Providence, Butler and East Mecklenburg High Schools as well as Jay M. Robinson, South Charlotte, Community House and Crestdale Middle Schools and Mat-thews, Elizabeth Lane, McKee Road and Endhaven Elementary Schools have all partnered to make this happen”. The kids are the benefactors. It gives them opportunity to learn a team sport and all the lessons that come with it.

MARA participants also benefit from their association with the jr.nba/jr.wnba as well as their par-ticipation in the Charlotte Bobcat Youth Basketball network. Benefits of the Bobcats network are coaches, player and referee clinics, Bobcat uniforms as well as group ticket opportunities. MARA offers leagues for boys and girls from ages 5 - 17.

BEYOND THE GAME WITH CASEY POWERS

Tenth grader Casey Powers is a multi-sport athlete at Ardrey Kell High School. He is a versatile member of the football team and also plays basketball for the Knights. Casey is the son of Kevin and Katie Powers.

How long have you been playing football? “I have been playing football since I was 11 years old in the sixth grade for the South Park Falcons By the way I would like to give a shout out to coaches Register, Thorn-ton, and Campania”

Do you have a favorite memory on the football field?“It would probably be two things; the first would be our first win this season against West Meck after going 0-10 last season. And the second is when I played for the South Park Falcons in 2005 and won the Optimist Bowl. That is still the most fun I have had on a football team and I am still good friends with a bunch of guys from that team. We look back and reminisce on that season all the time.” What has been the big-gest obstacle for you to face in sports and how did you overcome it? “The biggest obstacle I have faced playing football is defi-nitely going to team camp for Ardrey Kell this summer. It was four hours away in the middle of nowhere at a place called Camp Chatuga. We didn’t even get cell phone service. The week of noth-ing but football and sleeping was tough but it definitely helped me out on and off the football field. I also became

great friends with many of my teammates.” What does Good Sports-manship mean to you? “Basically to me it means just having class on the field (or court). Just keep your cool and play the game.” If you could play one game in the NFL, what team would you want to play for?“If I could play one game it would not be for a pro team. I would play for the Univer-sity of Notre Dame. How do you do in school and what is your favorite class?“Right now my GPA is some-where around a 4.3 and my favorite class is science of vi-sual technologies because we are learning to use different software on computers. In this class I am learning how to do things like create imag-es and we are going to learn how to create 3D shapes and animations. I might actually try to enter a job that does things like this.”
