Jones, who was a meager 5’10 138 pounds as the starting varsity quarterback, re- members the pressure. “I remember we fumbled on the very first ex- change,” Jones said. “I was really nervous to get out on the field, but we ended up winning that game.” With only 6 seniors on the team, the sophomore leader was only beginning what would turn into a very long season. “That year we had some bad pass protection, and Daniel took some ferocious hits,” said Charlotte Lat- in Football Coach Larry McNulty. “In one incidence that year, a Charlotte Christian player hit him so hard he came over to the sideline and his facemask was half ripped off his helmet and it was turned so his facemask was on the side of his helmet. He came over to the sideline and said, ‘Somebody just give me their helmet’ and he wouldn’t come off the field. That’s when I really knew he was a special quarter- back. ” The Hawks finished 4-6 in the 2012 season, leav- ing Jones and the Hawks with room for improve- ment. “He was in 8th grade the first time I saw him,” McNulty said. “He turned sideways and I couldn’t see him. That’s how skinny the kid was, but he was athletic and a competitor regardless.” During that offseason Jones hit a 5 inch growth spurt and gained a lot of weight. He would no longer be at the end of jokes about physicality. “I was limited to short passes, and I had to have perfect timing on my passes or they wouldn’t get there, because my ball didn’t have enough velocity on it,” Jones said. “But that kind of timing and prac- tice has helped me because now my arm is stronger and I still play with that exact timing I was forced to play with.” As the 2013 season started, a new Daniel Jones would take the field as a bigger, stronger, and faster quarterback, but it was his new mentality that would impress the coaches the most. “He never missed a day last year coming down to my office and going over film and the game-plans with me,” McNulty said. “Not one day. He showed up every single school day that year. He does everything the coaches ask him to do, and exactly the way they asked him.” Both on the field and off, Jones grew into a smarter quarterback. Last year Jones finished the school year with a 3.49 GPA, and is taking multiple AP courses his senior year. Jones also heads into his senior year as a returning starter at small forward for the Charlotte Latin basketball team. With his new found confidence, Daniel and the Hawks would improve exponentially. They would go 9-3 and earn a spot in the state championship, where they faced a crushing defeat to their cross town rivals, the Charlotte Christian Knights. That year Jones earned all-conference, and second team all-state honors, but still no ring. “Up until those Christian games we thought we’d improved,” Jones said. “But that made me realize how much we still need to work if we want to win a state championship.” This time around Jones, McNulty, and the Hawks are working harder than ever to get another shot at the title. In his third year starting, expectations are high for Jones. “When you work with the same guy for three years in a row, he becomes an extension of you. He becomes another coach on the field,” McNulty said. “He’s spent a lot of time working on his craft, he’s de- veloped good foot technique and throwing motion, and he understands the offense.” McNulty has helped Jones grow into the quarter- back he is today. “For every athlete that succeeds, it takes a coach who believes in him,” Jones said. “He’s probably the first football coach to believe that I could do it, and that gives me the confidence to work.” It wasn’t only Coach McNulty who helped Jones in his journey, his family and friends have been there all along through the recruitment process. Schools like Wake Forest, Princeton, and Harvard have shown interest in the young quarterback. The long process has been made much easier with the help of his sophomore brother, Bates Jones. “Bates is always working out with me, throwing in the backyard, coming out to Latin to do footwork, and it’s a lot easier to work on those sorts of things when you have somebody to do it with,” Jones said. “Coaching him and bringing him along has also helped me realize what I need to work on.” Jones and the Hawks hope to take on the 2014-15 season bigger, better, and smarter than last year, and are still looking to win that last game of the season. “I remember we fumbled on the very first ex-change,” Jones said. “I was really nervous to get out on the field, but we ended up winning that game.”

With only 6 seniors on the team, the sophomore leader was only beginning what would turn into a very long season.

“That year we had some bad pass protection, and Daniel took some ferocious hits,” said Charlotte Lat-in Football Coach Larry McNulty. “In one incidence that year, a Charlotte Christian player hit him so hard he came over to the sideline and his facemask was half ripped off his helmet and it was turned so his facemask was on the side of his helmet. “Up until those Christian games we thought we’d improved,” Jones said. “But that made me realize how much we still need to work if we want to win a state championship.”

This time around Jones, McNulty, and the Hawks are working harder than ever to get another shot at

the title. In his third year starting, expectations are high for Jones.

Rising College Freshman Matthew Cooper started his swimming career when he was six years old. He began at Huntingtowne Farms Swim and Racquet Club, and then moved on to Team Charlotte Swimming when he was ten. Before long, he was sixteen and swimming for SwimMac Carolina. With all the great times he has had with swimming so far, Matthew de-cided not to let it all come to an end with High School. The son of Jim and Rebecca Cooper is going to be continuing his swimming jour-ney at Kenyon College in the fall, having just graduated from South Mecklenburg.

Matthew went on a recruiting trip to Ke-nyon, and immediately knew that he would feel comfortable with the team. He stated: “I wanted to go somewhere where I would be challenged in the classroom, as well as excel in the sport I love and Kenyon fit both of those qualifications.”

Matthew has done an excellent job thus far in the classroom, graduating as an AP Scholar with Honor award, and a 4.84 GPA. In High School, Matthew was in National Honor Society, on A or A/B Honor roll all four years, and was chosen as a Junior Marshall his Junior year for the graduation ceremony. He will con-tinue to pursue academic excellence throughout college as he learns to balance swim practices, schoolwork, sleep, meals, and the social aspect of college.

Aside from time management, there is a lot to learn from swimming according to Matthew. He is inspired by his athletic role model, Jason Lezak, who was part of the 2008 Olympic 4X100 freestyle relay for USA. Matthew recalls how the USA team was losing to France, yet Lezak’s perseverance and determination pulled out the win as he beat the Frenchmen with a strong finish. Because of him, Mat-thew is reminded to never give up no mat-ter how bleak the situation is. He learned that: “Hard work, determination, and true grit inspires me to never give up.”

Matthew’s hard work paid off when he qualified for the Junior Nationals, which is a premier level meet with the best 18 and under swimmers from around the country, in the 100 and 200 backstroke. He said that being able to go into races knowing he can do well helps him to have fun and not stress. Swimming has provided countless fun memories, especially making great friendships, be-ing a part of such amazing team spirit, and sharing jokes with his teammates. Matthew looks forward to the challenges and the fun times there is to come for him in Ohio at Kenyon.

AUDREY DROPPELMANSouth Mecklenburg High School rising senior Audrey Droppel-man has been named the Architect Sports and Physical Therapy Student Athlete of the Week. The daughter of Jim and Georgia Droppelman was named the Women’s Swim Captain for South Mecklenburg’s Swim Team next year.

Not only does this 100 Backstroke and 100 Freestyle swimmer excel in the water, but she also makes her mark on the soccer field. The Defensive Midfielder made varsity as a sophomore, playing with a great team that earned conference runner up honors. Injuries popped up her junior year as a slide tackle caused tears in her ACL, MCL, and Meniscus. She had surgery on September 16th, then endured 7 ½ months of physical

therapy. Four days after being cleared to play, she tore her ACL and Meniscus again. After another surgery on April 15th, she is currently facing more physical therapy.

Audrey looks at the bright side of her unfortunate situation; she plans on going to college to fo-cus on academics rather than athletics anyway. Although she had dreams of playing in college, she is unsure if her knee will hold out. She is pleased with her grades, and carries a 4.96GPA after many AP classes.

Congratulations to Audrey Droppelman for being named the Architect Sports and Physical Therapy Student Athlete of the Week.

NICK FUTIA Marvin Ridge High School senior Nick Futia has been named the Architect Sports and Physical Therapy Student-Athlete of the Week. Nick, son of Pete and Sue Futia plays football and runs track for the Mavericks. Nick played a crucial role in helping his team win the 3A Indoor Track and Field Championship this winter.

Among others, Nick’s numerous athletic accomplishments include winning multiple 4X800 meter State Championships, scoring in the 4X400-meter, the 1000-meter and the 4X400-meter at his first state meet, and breaking two minutes as a junior in the 800-meter. Nick credits much of his success to the support and guidance of his par-ents, both of whom have played major roles in guiding and motivating him in his journey that eventually led to three state championships.

Nick’s impressive sports career is rivaled by his equally impressive record in the classroom. He maintains a 4.8 GPA in Honors and AP classes while volunteering at the Waxhaw Track Club. This summer he plans to run unattached at Junior Olympic and USATF meets. Next fall he will attend the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill where he plans on focusing on biomedical engineering while competing in Track and Field as a Decath-lete.

Congratulations to Nick Futia for being named the Architect Sports and Physical Therapy Student-Athlete of the Week.

Junior lacrosse player Emerson Schaeffer has developed into an excellent player and a crucial mem-ber of the Charlotte Latin Hawks lacrosse team. The son of Barbara and George Schaeffer has worked hard since freshman year to earn a varsity position on the team and to carry the Hawks from the back in the goalie position. Let’s go Beyond The Game with Emerson Schaeffer to learn more.

When did you begin playing lacrosse and what position do you play?“I started playing lacrosse in the fifth grade as a defender. When I was in sixth grade, I borrowed some gear and tried playing in goal during a Polar Bear game. I got hooked and have been a goalie ever since.”

Do you play any other sports?“I play soccer and am a defender on Latin’s varsity team.”

What are your top three athletic accomplishments?“Winning three consecutive state lacrosse championships with incredible teammates. Being named to the 2014 All-State lacrosse team my junior year. Making Latin’s varsity lacrosse team as a freshman.”

Who are your coaches and how have they helped you progress? / Do you have any specific position coaches or trainers that have had an influence on you?“Latin Coaches Sipperly, Song, Peters, Sanchez, Tanneberger, and Basch have each helped me with various aspects of my game. During my sophomore season, Coach Tanneberger worked with me, focusing specifically on my position and stopping shots, to which I credit much of my success. I am fortunate to have great defensive players in front of me. During a game, we talk to each other a lot, and the guys pre-

vent many of the opponents’ shots from even happening. I also have to give credit to our offense. Facing some of the state’s best offensive players each day in practice helps me prepare for almost anything I will face in games.”

What are your favorite sports memories? “My favorite sports memory, by far, is making three saves in the last 30 sec-onds of the 2013 state championship game against Providence Day, including a point blank save with five seconds on the clock, to keep our one point lead. I will always remember those very intense moments.”

What are some goals you have for next season?“As a team, I hope to win our fourth consecutive state championship while creating great memories for everyone associated with the program. Person-ally, I hope to re-earn my starting spot and make the all-state team again.”

Any other interesting information or challenges you faced that you would like to share with us?“During warm ups prior to this year’s quarterfinal game against Cape Fear Academy, coach Tanneberger was shooting on me and a fast shot hit my hand. The next day, I learned that my thumb was broken, and the doctor wanted to put me in a cast. I really wanted to play the rest of the tournament, and I convinced my parents to hold off on the cast until after the tournament. The trainers at Latin did a great job of taping my hand, and I had two great games. I gave up a few extra rebounds, but our defensive guys picked up most of those. After the tournament, I ended up having surgery on my thumb and am now in a cast. It was worth it.”
