D. Activities before the Workshop
1. Use the Virtual Library, Internet, E-books, specific workshop references, and other
academic resources to research information about the role of private and public
investment in building a sustainable economy, include the regulatory environment in
which businesses operate under a sustainable economy. Take notes on your findings and
bring them to class.
2. Use the Internet, specific workshop references and other academic resources to explore
the definitions of the workshop’s vocabulary. As in the previous workshop, write the
definition in your words on an index card and use the word in context in an original
sentence. Take the index cards to class and include the definitions in the glossary of your
portfolio. (This assignment will be evaluated as part of the Portfolio Evaluation, using
Appendix R).
3. The facilitator will create a written discussion thread forum using the Discussion Board
tool in Blackboard. Students will discuss and justify the need to transition to a
sustainable economy and react to the comments of at least three colleagues. (The written
discussion forum will be evaluated using Appendix L).
4. Prepare a graphic organizer of your own creation about the principles to build a
sustainable economy. Be prepared to share the graphic organizer in a cooperative learning

5. Compose an essay of at least two pages describing and evaluating the role that private and
public investments play in building a sustainable economy. Provide examples of these
investments in your essay. Students may obtain information on essay writing at
https://www.grammarly.com/blog/essay-types-students-must-know/. Be sure to use APA
6.0 (2010) style, include bibliographic citations and references, and submit the essay to
NetTutor for feedback. The student should request feedback for format and grammar and
include the feedback in their submission. The facilitator will send written works to
SafeAssignTM
to check for plagiarism. The graded essay assignment must be included in
the student’s portfolio. (The assignment will be evaluated using Appendix F, Essay
Rubric).
6. Use the Virtual Library, Internet, and other academic resources to research at least three
articles about the topic of sustainable policies. Write a five-paragraph summary on the
MANA 605-O BUSINESS AT THE PRIVATE/PUBLIC INTERSECTION 36
most important ideas presented in the articles, and submit it to the facilitator using the
Blackboard platform. (The assignment will be evaluated using Appendix C, Six-Trait
Analytic Writing Rubric). Take a copy of your summary to class.
7. Research examples of government and private sector intervention in addressing
sustainability and bring examples to class for discussion.
8. Investigate some of the government regulations and standards, global initiatives or
agreements to protect the environment (indicate how many), such as the Clean Air Act
and the Paris Agreement. Write a 5-page document on how these regulations may restrict
the private sector’s ability to do business as usual as well as opportunities for expansion
and mention specific examples. Submit your document to the facilitator via Blackboard
and bring a copy to class. (The assignment will be evaluated using Appendix C, Six-Trait
Analytic Writing Rubric). Include the graded document in your portfolio.
9. Research and bring examples to class of at least two corporate sustainability plans. Do not

10. Access the Digital Performance Portfolio folder of the previous workshop in Blackboard
and upload the graded documents or artifacts that correspond to Workshop One. Follow
any other instructions stipulated by the facilitator for the effective completion of this
activity.
E. Application Activities during the Workshop
1. The facilitator will initiate the workshop with an interactive ExC-ELL activity using the
workshop’s vocabulary. Students will form inside and outside circles to discuss the
vocabulary. Students will share the definitions they developed for the vocabulary and
have colleagues “guess” the word it applies to. (This activity will be evaluated using
Appendix G, Class Participation Rubric).
MANA 605-O BUSINESS AT THE PRIVATE/PUBLIC INTERSECTION 37
2. The facilitator will conduct an interactive survey using http://polltogo.com/info/.
a. Students will vote in favor or against the following statement:
i. Climate change is real; therefore, government should regulate all business
practices that alter our natural resources, even if these regulations affect our
economic growth.
b. After the poll, students will share and defend their opinions about the results.
3. The facilitator will lead students in an interactive Think, Pair, Share activity about the
topic of sustainability policies across the private and public sectors. The facilitator will
either write or project the following questions on the board: Which sustainability policies
are necessary? Why are sustainability policies considered unnecessary or
disadvantageous to businesses? Students will jot down their responses, pair up with a
partner, and then share their perspectives. Students should provide specific examples
based on their experience, readings or discussions. Each pair of partners will share their
responses with the whole group or with other pairs of partners. (This activity will be
evaluated using Appendix G, Class Participation Rubric).
4. Students will work collaboratively in small groups for these activities.
a. Each group will create a table or a similar visual tool listing a minimum of three
facts about sustainability initiatives.
b. The students may use these questions to complete this exercise:
i. Are sustainability initiatives costly?
ii. Do sustainability policies increase or decrease regulation?
iii. Can sustainability practices increase technology and innovation?
iv. Is climate change caused by humans or is it a natural trend?
v. Should corporations worry about the effects of climate change? Why?
MANA 605-O BUSINESS AT THE PRIVATE/PUBLIC INTERSECTION 38
c. After completing this exercise, each group will give a brief oral presentation to
share their findings with the rest of the groups.
(This activity will be evaluated using Appendix G, Class Participation Rubric and
Appendix H, Oral Presentation Rubric).
5. Students will continue working in groups to explore the sustainability perspective of the
public sector or of the private sector, as assigned by the facilitator. Students in groups
will use their work assignments to explain how their assigned (public or private) sector
contributes to sustainability. Students will share their research to explain the role each
sector plays in the development of sustainability policies and practices. The discussions
must include specific examples, such as those shown in the following table:
Public Sector Private Sector
Government-sponsored research Innovative technologies such as zero
emissions vehicles, solar power, and others
Funding for sustainable infrastructure Market opportunities
Tax incentives to direct private capital into
sustainable projects
Tax credits and incentives for business
expansion
Regulations to protect the environment Recognition and social responsibility
After adding their examples to the table, each group will share and explain their work to
the rest of the class. Students will upload their table or similar diagram to the area
designated by the facilitator in Blackboard. (This activity will be evaluated using
Appendix M, Oral Discussion Forum Rubric).
6. The class will be divided into two groups to prepare for a debate on the regulatory
environment of sustainability, using the summary completed before the workshop as
reference. One group will support government regulatory practices such as the Paris
Agreement, and the other group will prepare arguments against regulatory practices such
MANA 605-O BUSINESS AT THE PRIVATE/PUBLIC INTERSECTION 39
as limitations to economic growth. Each group must present facts, specific examples and
arguments to defend its position and to rebut the other group’s claim. (This activity will
be evaluated using Appendix J, Role-Playing Rubric).
7. Students will continue working in their small groups.
a. Students in their groups will be assigned a sustainable plan from a corporation
(the facilitator may also assign sustainability plans that students brought to class
as part of their assignments) to analyze them using the following questions as
guidelines:
i. Why do these corporations want to play a role in the environment?
ii. Why should corporations understand sustainable policies?
iii. Do you believe that sustainable plans are critical for a business or
corporation to succeed?
b. Students will present their findings to the rest of the class using PowerPoint
slides, SWAY, Prezi, charts, organizers, or other visual aids. (This activity will be
evaluated using Appendix H, Oral and Audio-Visual Presentation Rubric).
c. The audience will have the opportunity to ask thought-provoking questions and
provide constructive feedback. (This activity will be evaluated using Appendix G,
Class Participation Rubric).
8. The facilitator will write these questions in index cards and some others written by the
students and distribute them at random to the students. Each student will try to respond
to his or her question or give it to another student if he or she doesn’t know the answer.
a. Using an open question and answer forum, the students will answer the
following questions:
i. Why is sustainability a popular trend in global enterprises?
MANA 605-O BUSINESS AT THE PRIVATE/PUBLIC INTERSECTION 40
ii. How can government, nonprofit organizations, and private
organizations work together to build sustainable communities?
iii. Do you believe that changes in consumer consumption and lifestyles to
transition into sustainability negatively impact the business
environment or do they offer an opportunity? Explain your response.
b. Students will explain the rationale for their answers to the rest of the class.
(This activity will be evaluated using Appendix M, Oral Discussion Forum
Rubric).
9. Students will complete their reflective journal by addressing the following question:
a. Why should the private sector embrace plans to support a sustainable
economy?
The students will submit their journals to the Journal section created by the
facilitator in Blackboard and include the self-reflection in their portfolios. The
facilitator will provide feedback on the work submitted. Students must include their
journals in the Digital Portfolio. (This activity will be evaluated using Appendix I,
Self- Reflection Rubric)
10. Students will gather with their assigned research group to continue working on their
final project and submit their progress report to the facilitator.

MANA 605-O BUSINESS AT THE PRIVATE/PUBLIC INTERSECTION 49
discutido anteriormente?
MANA 605-O BUSINESS AT THE PRIVATE/PUBLIC INTERSECTION 50
facilitador.
propuesta:
MANA 605-O BUSINESS AT THE PRIVATE/PUBLIC INTERSECTION 51
iii.
clase).
7. Cada estudiante reflexionará sobre lo siguiente:
MANA 605-O BUSINESS AT THE PRIVATE/PUBLIC INTERSECTION 52
