Thermal Stabilization
Almost every car brand in the world relies on Addcomp and PolyAd for thermo stabilization of thermoplastic materials.
Plastic exterior and interior parts have made major contribu-tions to the automotive industry’s efforts to reduce vehicle weight and thereby improve fuel economy. Anything used in the automobile sector has to meet strict requirements in relation to meet different properties, such as thermal aging resistance, UV resistance, mechanical and surface properties. Additive solutions from PolyAd for engineering plastics, such as polyamide, and from Addcomp for polyolefin compounds, especially polypropylene compounds with glass or talcum can help to comply with these strict specifications. These blends can be either 100% systems or concentrates in a polymer base.
These stabilization additives help to minimize the oxidation process by using: • Primary antioxidants as free radical scavengers • Secondary antioxidants to decompose any peroxides that have formed, so-called hydroperoxide decomposers
PolyAd products are used, among other things, for automotive under the hood applications where high temperature stability is critical. Using PolyAd additives you can achieve thermal stabilization of PA 6 for up to 2,000 hours at 150 °C and up to 5,000 hours at 180 °C in GF-PP compounds.

Flame Retardancy
While BYK offers its clay-based additives as flame retardant synergists, Addcomp and PolyAd offer a whole range of products which can be used as flame retardants in different polymers and for different applications.
CLOISITE, a clay-based filler, is being increasingly used in halogen-free flame retardant formulations. In this application, CLOISITE helps to substantially reduce the absolute quantity of mineral fillers such as aluminum- and magnesium-hydroxide in flame retardant compounds. Despite the low dosages of flame retardant additives, it is possible to achieve better flame retardancy. This enables the total heat release to be reduced in the event of a fire and also prevents flaming droplets by forming a stable combustion crust. Both effects make it easier to comply with the most stringent fire standards. By developing new, efficient clays, BYK is able to provide flame retardant synergists that are easy to disperse. In addition, the reduction in the use of flame retardants has a positive influence on the mechanical properties of these compounds. Typical applications for CLOISITE include halogen-free cable formulations, where not only good flame retardant properties are required, but also and especially mechanical properties such as high strength and elongation at break, or where good electrical properties, such as high specific volume resistivity before and after immersion in water are highly important.
In addition, BYK is now also offering a variety of other highly efficient halogen-free flame retardant products under the ADD-VANCE brand to reach V0 levels in polyolefin products.
Products such as ADD-VANCE FR 583 provide excellent flame retardancy and UV stability for PE products and for articles with proportionally large surface areas, such as films and fibers.
With PolyAd products, we now have fully formulated flame protection systems for polyamides in our product range that have been developed to meet UL standard 94 V0 and others.
Benefits
• Melt-blendable flame retardant, allowing extrusion of thin films and spinning of fine fibers
• Antimony free system for thin applications, no more blocked spinnerets and no deposits on tools and spinning pumps
• Reliable anti-UV protection, resulting in a longer service life of the final product
• Safe and easy handling, dust-free, inherently low toxicity, and no environmental impact

Coupling Agents for Fiber Reinforced Polypropylene Compounds
To meet the increasingly higher demands for lightweight solutions, for example, in the automotive industry, new material solutions must be developed. A trend that stands out in this area is the use of carbon fibers in thermoplastic compounds. With the SCONA and PRIEX brands, BYK offers a broad range of novel coupling agents, which are particularly suited to improving the mechanical properties in polypropylene compounds reinforced with carbon, glass or natural fibers, especially for the automotive industry. As a particular result of using the coupling agent, the E modulus, tensile strength, and heat deflection temperature could be considerably improved.
New products such as SCONA TPPP 9212 and SCONA TSPP 10213 are coupling agents with a high percentage of bound maleic anhydride. The content of chemically bound maleic anhydride (1.8% and 2.2%, respectively) enables even more efficient bonding of the sized glass fibers to the polypropylene matrix. This produces compounds with excellent mechanical properties even at low dosages.
PRIEX and SCONA combine a broad portfolio of grafted polymers with different grafting levels, a variety of different melt flow indices, and extremely low VOC levels, even below 50 ppm in some cases.
Other products are SCONA TPPP 8112, SCONA TPPP 9012, SCONA TPPP 9112, or PRIEX 20097, PRIEX 20070, PRIEX 20093, PRIEX 25097, PRIEX 15005.

Processing
pigment/filler dispersion, lower filter pressure values (FPV), and a higher throughput. Contrary to expectations, the quality still remains high, improving the mechanical properties of the finished part at the same time, without affecting its appearance.
Used in solid color masterbatches, they also lead to a lower FPV and a higher throughput. Products such as BYK-P 4102 adsorb onto the pigment and/or filler surface, which leads to a more homogenous dispersion. The higher melting fraction then reduces the melt viscosity of the masterbatch or compounds during the extrusion process.
BYK offers a broad range of processing additives to improve product quality and production processes.
ADD-MAX processing aids are designed to reduce friction between the polymer melt and internal metal surfaces of processing equipments. Experience shows that ADD-MAX processing aids will not influence end-product mechanical properties, such as tensile strength and impact resistance.
The BYK-P 4000 series of processing additives provide excellent wetting of pigments and fillers in the extruder, less compacting, and therefore a low melt viscosity. This leads to improved

UV Stabilizer ConcentratesHighly effective UV Stabilizer Formulations
Using Addcomp products, highly effective UV stabilizer concentrates are offered that help to improve the lifetime of plastic films and plastic items such as fibers or other extruded items. The concentrates are dust-free granules or pellets that can be dispensed easily and reliably. This provides accurate dosing and therefore a uniform and reproducible manufacturing process.
Plastic films are becoming ever more important in our day-to-day lives. Among other things, they are widely used as films for low-cost greenhouses or as food packaging. So that the plastic films can fulfill their respective functions, they need to be protected from degradation due to exposure to UV light. Without this kind of protection, films made, for example, from a polyethylene base, will very quickly become brittle. This occurs due to a complex chemical process that leads to degradation of the polymer into its low molecular decomposition products over time. This rapidly makes thin and therefore, especially economical films, in particular, unusable. To prevent this, UV stabilizers are widely used. However, the handling of these substances is often very difficult due to the often dusty or sticky nature of the substances.
Benefits
• Simple and reliable handling of highly effective UV stabilizer formulations
• ADD-VANCE UV 51, universal UV stabilizer concentrate, also suitable for food applications
• ADD-VANCE UV 442, specially for automotive applications with very good and long-lasting anti-UV protection
• EpochUV™ Extend, long-term stability for thin layer applications. Enables stability in applications such as fiber, wire & cable, and films where dispersion and high surface quality is required. Dosed at 0.3 %, EpochUV™ Extend offers 1,000 hours of light stability with greater than 50% tensile retention in thin sections

PaNew Mixed Mineral for Thermoplastic Reinforcement
Polypropylen is one of the most used plastics in automotive applications. One reason is for sure the low density of the PP. But very often the polypropylene is combined with fillers like talc to improve e.g. stiffness of the resulting compounds. This of course has a negative influence on the density of the compounds and the weight of the final parts. BYK has now developed a special functional filler based on our unique technology. This new mixed mineral shows already at low input level a superior reinforcing effect compared to conventional talc fillers. The lower dosing level leads to a lower weight of the resulting parts compared to standard talc filled compounds. Another very important advantage of our new mixed mineral is the improved scratch resistance of the reinforced PP compounds. Not only the visibility of the scratches is very much reduced but also the scratch depth is much lower than with conventional solutions.

BYK Service for the PVC Plastisol Processing IndustryService is taken VERY SERIOUSLY at BYK-Chemie
The use of suitable raw materials as well as optimum production conditions are essential for the production of, for example, PVC floorings and PVC wall coverings. This interface – raw materials and production conditions – is optimized by choosing the correct BYK additives. This results in improved production conditions and, ultimately, an optimized final product for the processor.
The BYK additives in PVC plastisol applications are used to optimize
• the rheology or the flow behavior
• the air release properties
• other properties in printing inks and coating systems
Moreover, alongside formulation and additive expertise, testing and measuring devices are also of considerable importance for the development, as these help us to better understand the influence of formulation components. Ultimately, this should result in the production and evaluation of a high-quality final product.
• the dispersion of fillers and pigments
#FAKUMA201832 #FAKUMA2018 33ADDITIVESADDITIVES
The application technology departments at BYK-Chemie are perfectly equipped for testing and optimizing the formulations together with the customer.
The following provides an extract of some of the laboratory instruments that are used on a daily basis for developing new additives and for optimizing customer formulations in the PVC processing industry.
• Rheometer: Adjusts the viscosity to the processing conditions
• Surface tension: Improves printability
• Mathis oven: Checks gelling behavior, color impression and surfaces
• Vacuumat: Optimizes the air release properties
• 2-roll calender: Checks the processibility of PVC dryblends
• Melt viscometer: Measures and optimizes the gelling and melting behavior
• Tensile testing machine: Measures the mechanical properties
• Other equipment used to optimize printing inks and coating systems
To improve the process of scaling up from a pure laboratory application to actual production, BYK-Chemie customers can also make use of the laboratory coating line. Web materials with a width of up to 50 cm can be continuously coated using this facility. This enables the user to check and, if necessary, optimize the processibility of, e.g., PVC plastisols under production-like conditions. A particular feature of the system is that it can be used to measure viscosity during processing.
#FAKUMA201834 #FAKUMA2018 35ADDITIVESADDITIVES
The coating line is equiped with a device which enables to measure occuring forces under the coating knife during processing at a fixed gap. The measured values allow to calculate the shear stress, shear rate and viscosity. Pressure transducers
Reducing viscosity is not just a case of diluting the product with thinners such as white spirit or secondary plasticizers. These solutions often have disadvantages such as high dosage, migration, poor printability, curling, high emissions – both during processing as well as in the final product. BYK-Chemie has developed a range of additives that helps the user to overcome these issues. Often, the viscosity reduction is desired only in specific processing areas/windows. BYK-Chemie has developed products which can be used in the respective application in a targeted manner.
Additives to Reduce the Viscosity of PVC Plastisols
#FAKUMA201836 #FAKUMA2018 37ADDITIVESADDITIVES
The BYK-1160 additive family is an example of this. This product family has been developed to reduce especially high flow limits of PVC plastisols. As this flow behavior is particularly determined by the types of PVC used, BYK-Chemie offers different products from the 1160 range. For example, BYK-1160 and BYK-1163 are also suitable for low fogging automotive applications. BYK-1164 is often better with dilatant PVC types.
Even with a very small dosage, these products ensure good flow behavior and outstanding pumpability. They have low volatility and good heat and UV resistance.
The current new development BYK-1166 is particularly recommended for foamed PVC plastisols, where, alongside the reduction in viscosity, additional assessment criteria such as surface, foam structure and degree of whiteness are essential.

DISPERPLAST-1180
Low-volatile and Solvent-free Wetting and Dispersing Additive for Filled, Plasticizer-Containing PVC Dryblends/Compounds
The new DISPERPLAST- 1180 is a very efficient wetting and dispersing additive for highly filled systems in which conventional processing aids and standard wetting and dispersing additives reach their limits. Quite regularly, the filler content in formulations is increased in order to improve the efficiency. However, this can cause undesirable effects, such as:
• poorer mechanical properties• reduced melt strength during processing• slower fusion and increased production time• plate out• poorer lamination of the individual film layers.
The use of DISPERPLAST -1180 does not only facilitate reducing the formulation costs by increasing the filler content, it also improves the quality of the end product. DISPERPLAST -1180 is therefore particularly suitable for high-quality laminated systems such as PVC design floorings (LVT).
