Science Olympiad
Amazing Opportunities for Homeschool Students
What is Science Olympiad?An international nonprofit organization dedicated to:
•Improving the quality of science education
•Increasing student interesting in science and science careers
•Providing recognition of students for achievements in science education
Nationwide there are over 7,000 teams, over 2 million students
Students prepare to test for Bridge Building competition.
How is it Done?• The goals of Science Olympiad are accomplished via
– Training workshops– Invitationals– Regional tournaments– State tournaments– National tournaments– International tournaments
• Students compete as individuals for the benefit of the team
• Involvement of the community by resourcing professionals to mentor the students
The EventsEach year, each team will prepare for 23 events representing the various science disciplines such as biology, forensics, earth science, chemistry, engineering, physics, computers, music and technology.Students learn from failures as well as
successes.
A Balanced ApproachEvents require:• Knowledge of science facts• Study Skills• Science Applications• Talents• Ability to interpret and follow
rules and instructions• Creativity
•Teamwork Future scientists study an unknown substance for Science Olympiad.
Objectives• To bring science to life, to show how
science works, to emphasize problem solving aspects of science and the understanding of science concepts.
• To expose students to real-life
challenges of working with a team, group planning and cooperation
• To attract more students to careers in science, technology and science teaching.
Overall Goals • Capturing and retaining the interest
of students in science and technology
• Enhancement of student self-esteem by giving a sense of belonging and accomplishment
• Enrichment of science curriculum
• Development of “Intellete” pride for outstanding intellectual performance
Science Olympiad Divisions• 3rd-5th Elementary
(Division A)
• 6th-9th: Middle (Division B)
• 9th-12th: High (Division C)
Technical Writing
Tennessee Science Olympiad• In 2014, there were 48 Division B teams and 64 Division C teams
• There are 7 Regional tournament sites. Explorers Regional site is Chattanooga State and we will compete in February
• The State tournament is at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville in April
Explorers Homeschool
Academy•Explorers Elementary (Div. A) team formed in 2009. Beginning of a great team!
•In 2010, Explorers Middle School (Div. B) team was formed and placed 2nd at Regional, and finished 6th of 18 teams at the State tournament
•Each year since, Explorers Middle school team has placed 1st at Regional and either 5th or 6th at State
•In 2013, the Explorers High School (Div. C) team was formed. Beginning of another great team!!

How to be on the team?• Participate at meetings to become
acquainted with the events
• Attend field trips
• Develop study skills
• Learn how to be a great partner
• Accept guidance from your coaches
• Attend workshops and invitationalsStudy Ninjas Music Student
Who are the coaches?• Each team has a head coach who comes
with many years experience and a plethora of resources to guide and direct– Assign events based on need, student interests,
and observing team members at meetings– Direct managers regarding equipment, supplies,
forms, etc
• The most important coach is the parent coach. They will motivate, encourage, assist, research, and communicate with the head coach. Their goal is to nurture that love for learning that all children have naturally.

Fees • Middle and High School teams
$85 – 1st student$65 – 2nd student$25 – each additional student
• $25 - Tax deductible donation to Bethel Temple Church
• $10 – Explorers Homeschool Academy for insurance/supplies
• Fees due September 16th, 2014
