STUDENT MANUAL SOCIAL STUDIES LESSON 147

Lesson 147 What Can You Do?

What kind of help does your community need? How could you help with that problem?

Today your task will be to brainstorm a list of things your community needs. You might

have to go out in the community and ask people what they think the community needs.

Maybe the library needs new books, maybe there isn’t a homeless shelter in your area,

maybe the local teenagers don’t have any places to hang out.

You will need to choose one of those topics and create your own fundraiser for it. You can

do whatever you want as long as it is helping someone in your community. You can hold a

garage sale to raise money you can do a book swap at the library, etc.

STUDENT MANUAL SOCIAL STUDIES LESSON 149

STUDENT MANUAL SOCIAL STUDIES LESSON 149

Choose one person to write to. Express your ideas about your topic. Explain what you

would like to do to help.

The kind of things that may be concerned about may be the water quality around where

you live.

Perhaps there is a public beach but it is not open in the summer because it is not safe. So

when you want a change, you need to let the people in power know what needs changing.

Even the President of the United States has been known to respond to letters of personal

concerns and issues.

So when you think of something that needs a change, write your notes in your notebook.

Then formulate your thoughts into a letter. Remember to use the correct format for your

letter. You should include your home address on your letter as well as on the envelope.

Use your full name. Do not expect an answer immediately. Be patient but do be firm and

direct.

Read your letter to your teacher.

STUDENT MANUAL SOCIAL STUDIES LESSON 150

Lesson 150Citizenship A to Z

For your last lesson on citizenship you will be making an ABC book. For each page, you

will write a letter of the alphabet and a word that starts with that letter and also has to do

with citizenship. For each page you also need an illustration. There is a template for you to

use for your twenty-six pages.

You will need to make a front and back cover for the book also. When you have all twenty-

six pages plus the front and back cover, bind them together to make a book.
