Lesson 1 What is Geography?

Today you will learn about geography and what a geographer does. Geography is the study of places. A geographer is someone who asks questions to find out about the places.

Geographers learn about the “Geography” of a location by asking lots of questions. They ask questions to find out about places, communities, countries and even the whole earth.

Compare your answers about what geography is and what a geographer does with what you have just learned.

What kind of questions do you think a Geographer would ask?

Lesson 2 How Was Our State Formed?

We have learned that Geographers have to ask many questions to learn about the Geography of a place. They need to find out about the natural and human characteristics of a place. Think about where you live. One of the questions geographers ask is where the “exact location” of a place is. What is the exact location where you live? If you gave your address, that would be the exact location of your home. Now, explain the current location of where you are sitting right now. You can give your “relative location” by saying something like “I am sitting next to the teacher in my classroom at school”. This would be your relative location. Sometimes it is easier for geographers to explain the relative location of a place rather than the exact location.

The community or city you live in is located in a state. A State is located in the United States. The United States is located in North America. North America is a continent in the world.

STUDENT MANUAL SOCIAL STUDIES / LESSON 2

Maps are an important tool for geographers. They help them describe the location of places and also locate places. Look at the map below and find the following:

What state is directly north of Iowa?

Which state is south of South Dakota?

Which state is East of North Dakota?

You used the “relative location” of the states.

Point to your state on the map.

Geographers also want to know what affected the development of a state and what physical characteristics the state has.

STUDENT MANUAL SOCIAL STUDIES / LESSON 2

Today, you are going to pretend to be a geographer and discover how your state was made.

Your teacher is going to show you how some states were formed by glaciers. Glaciers are a large body of ice moving slowly down a slope or valley or spreading outward on a land surface.

To show you how land formations are made by glaciers your teacher will use ice, hot water, sand and gravel. First, your teacher will place the ice in a shallow pan. Then, your teacher will pour hot water on the ice, you’ll notice at first not much happens. But, there are some things that might help it melt faster.

STUDENT MANUAL SOCIAL STUDIES / LESSON 2

Your teacher will add some gravel and sand to the top of the ice and pour the hot water again. What is happening now?

This is what covered most of the United States more than 14,000 years ago. Many of the states were nothing but a solid sheet of ice, about a mile deep.

It took many thousands of years to melt all this ice. As it melted, the gravel and sand underneath helped it melt even more. When it finally stopped melting, many states were formed. There were many landforms made by the glaciers melting. A landform is a natural feature of a land surface. Glacier deposits are sediment left after glacier. These also made landforms. What type of landforms do you think glaciers melting might have made? What type of landforms do you think glacier deposits might have made?

Now you are going to look at some of the maps that show how things changed. Remember it took thousands of years for our state to look like it does today. While we are looking, remember to think about: A) The changes in the physical land masses.

B) The physical changes made on the environment before and after the first settlers

came.

Lesson 3 Point Me in the Right Direction

Today you will learn how to use directions on a map. What are the four directions we use on a map? Here’s a hint it spells NEWS. The four directions are north, south, east and

west.

The direction symbol used on a map is called a Compass Rose. It was originally used to show wind direction but mapmakers started to use it in the 1300’s. When you see one you will understand why it is called a rose. It looks like one! Your teacher has a compass rose for you to label and decorate. After that you will be able to practice your skills on your state map.
