Lesson One What is Geography?

The earth is a very big place. We share it with many people and other living things. There

are well over 6,000,000,000 people on earth. Who are they and where ado they live?

Studying geography gives us a better understanding of the earth and its people, climate

change, political issues that occur between countries and different cultures. Having a

better understanding of these things makes us well-educated global citizens.

Geography is a spatial science. It is the study of the spatial behavior of people, the spatial

relationships between places and the spatial processes that create or maintain those

behaviors and relationships.

Spatial behavior of people: population

Spatial relationships between places: trade

Spatial processes that create or maintain those behaviors and relationships:

commuting and urban form.

Geographers are scientists who study the Earth’s physical environment and human

habitat. They study:

The physical environment and the effects of the environment on living things - The

external surrounding and conditions in which something exists

Ecology – The scientific study of the relations of organisms to one another and to

their physical environment.

Weather pattern – Scientists refer to a repeating weather occurence as a weather

pattern.

Climate pattern - Scientists refer to any recurring characteristic of the climate as

a climate pattern, such as glacial periods, El Nino, and volcanic winter.

Economics – The science that studies the production, distribution and

consumption of goods and services. It’s aim is to learn how economies work.

Culture - The set of beliefs, goals, and practices that a group of people share.

Geographers study world regions and specific regions of the world. They learn about

the culture, foods, language, religion, landscape and all aspects of the region.

How do you think history and geography are connected?

We have learned a lot about history in Fifth Grade Social Studies. We learned that

historians are the individuals that study history, the branch of knowledge that records

and explains past events. We also learned there are several reasons to study history.

History is the world’s warehouse that contains recorded information on how people and

societies from the past have behaved. By studying the past, it is easier for us to

recognize patterns in our behavior that will help us understand how current events may

be linked to the future.

Lesson Two What is Geography?

As historians, when geographers study a specific time, they have a starting point and

then move forward in time. This process is called chronological order. To review,

chronological order is a record of events starting with the earliest and then following the

order in which they occurred.

There are several ways that historians study the past. They may study documents,

artifacts, or even people themselves to interpret and understand the happenings of a

certain place in time. Geographers do the same.

STUDENT MANUAL SIXTH GRADE SOCIAL STUDIES LESSON 2

History and Geography are connected. When people move around the earth it

changes the human population in areas. Also, when people move around they often

modify the physical geography of the places they live. History studies the past and how

civilizations live.

When historians and geographers do research it is important that they have proof of their

findings based on reliable information. In order to do this, they study two different types

of sources, primary sources and secondary sources.

Primary sources are forms of evidence that have been made by individuals who actually

witnessed or took part in a specific event. These individuals may have documented what

they witnessed by telling their stories in journals, diaries, newspapers, poems, or by

taking a photograph or painting a picture.

Secondary sources are sources or records of an event recorded by someone that was

not present at the time, but references sources.

STUDENT MANUAL SIXTH GRADE SOCIAL STUDIES LESSON 3

Lesson Three The Five Themes of Geography

What do you know about the Five Themes of Geography? Where do you live? You could answer this question many different ways. You might

answer this question with a street number, a city name, or a state name. You could also

say that you live by mountains. Geographers might use these terms to describe a

place, also.

The first theme of Geography is Location. If someone asks, “Where are we?”, this is the

question that we will answer with Location. Location can be absolute or relative. Absolute

location is very specific and is the exact place on Earth where something can be found.

The process by which Geographers find

the absolute location of a place is by

using imaginary lines called: Latitude

and Longitude. Latitude lines run east

and west. Longitude lines run north and

south.

Page 24: 6th Grade Homeschool Curriculum - Sixth Grade Social Studies - Best Homeschool Curriculum - Cheap Homeschool Curriculum

STUDENT MANUAL SIXTH GRADE SOCIAL STUDIES LESSON 3

The second way to explain where something is located is called Relative Location. If

someone were to ask you where your school is, how would you answer? You might answer

with, “Near the police station on Mulberry St.”. This is Relative Location. Relative Location

is when you explain the location with landmarks and it’s relation to other places, such as

"next to the police station."

The second theme of Geography is Place. When you go on vacation to a

new city you probably have many questions about that place before you go. Are there

tall buildings or lots of open spaces? Is it a small town or a big city? Will the people

there speak the same language as me?

Every place has a group of features such as climate, plant and animal life, bodies of

water, and landforms. Places are affected by the people who live there. Human beings

can affect an area in many different ways such as having an impact on the type of food,

clothing, culture and government.

The third theme of Geography is Region. A region is an area that is defined by certain

similar characteristics. Those unifying or similar characteristics can be physical, natural,

human, or cultural. The three main types of regions are functional, perceptual and formal.

A functional region is centered around a focal point with the surrounding area linked to that

focal point by economic association, communication systems or such things as

transportation systems, regions centered on malls, ports and supermarkets.

A perceptual region is focused on human feelings and attitudes about an area and is

defined by people's shared perception of those areas. These can be mental maps, such as

when we say "The Midwest" or "Deep South". They do not have precise borders.

A formal region is characterized by a human property, such as people who share a religion,

political identity, culture or language. Counties, states and countries are formal regions

because they are defined by a common political identity. Climate regions, landform

regions, economic regions and physical regions are all types of formal regions.

STUDENT MANUAL SIXTH GRADE SOCIAL STUDIES LESSON 3

Have you ever heard someone say, “We are going on vacation to the South?”. What

does this mean to you? Many people refer to the southern states as the South. What do

the southern states have in common? You may say that the states in the south are hot,

there is a lot of open land, or all “the people talk differently” than the people in the north.

A Geographer would classify the south as a region.

Movement is the fourth theme of Geography that we will look at. When someone moves

from state to state or country to country, this is called Movement. People can move from

place to place, but so can goods. If a company produces a certain good and ships it to a

different country, this is also called Movement. When people move, sometimes it is

referred to as Migration. Migration is when a group of people move from one area to settle

in another.

The fifth theme of Geography is called Human-Environment Interaction. We, as

humans, interact with the environment every day. As humans, we depend on the

environment for food, when we use the land to grow crops. During a cold winter would

you wear shorts and T-shirt? We wear mittens, scarves and heavy jackets to keep warm.

This is an example of adapting to our environment. Many people heat their homes in

order to stay warm in the winter. This is called modifying the environment.

As you can see we interact with the environment in many different ways. Environment

can also be a feeling. If you were given a choice to live in a big city or a small town, which

would you choose? A big city is always busy and there are lots of people around all the

time. A small town usually has lots of room to run around but not as many tall buildings.

Which one do you prefer? This is called choosing an environment.
